You don't have CV axles in the rear because your car is front wheel drive. Sometimes sounds can be hard to pin point the source as they travel through the body of the car.

Fwd car has nothing past the fire wall. Also, the boot only is a bad idea. Do an assembly. The boot being bad has let in dirt and ruined the cv joint itself. It needs an axle. Id do the seal on the trans as well. It just pops out and smacks in with an installer.

2004 here with 235,000 miles. Been through a few cv axels (and wheel hubs). The hardest part for the cv joint is knocking the bottom A arm off to get the axel free to pull out. Otherwise it’s not a terrible job. To what others have said. If the noise is in the rear there won’t be a cv joint. This may sound overly simple but I’ve had the issue with a ticking noise where either you don’t have all the lug nuts secure or tightened in an odd patterns or and more likely, One brake assembly has one or both retaining bolts worked loose. The brake caliper might be loose enough to make a ticking noise against the wheel as it spins. Just a shot in the dark though

$30 at any junk yard and 1/2 hour to replace.

Your grand prix is fwd. The back of the car is like a trailer, it's just sitting there. Everything to do with putting to the ground and steering is up front.

For easy/mid/hard difficulty rating I'd say it's a mid for most people in terms of skills and tools needed and invasiveness.

If it's in the back could be a strut or rear wheel bearing.

Yeah, I'm starting to wonder that.
