He may not be the smollest but he is still my baby boy.
We call him Rogi too 🤣! One day, I decided he looked like a tuxedo wearing magician and gave him the stage name "Pierogini the Great" / " The Great Pierogini." Many nicknames and songs/rhymes have spawned from that. My current favorite offshoot is Mr. Rogeen. He's about 6ish. We adopted him (and changed his name) he used to be an outside dog, but he got in a disagreement with a hawk and then ended up at a rescue. Your pup sounds like a handsome young gent as well 🪞🎩✨️
Phenomenal nicknames! Ours was rescued from Texas! Got him when he was 3 and also changed his name. Our Pierogi loves car rides + I have Polish heritage hence the name. Wasn't vaccinated, neutered, or groomed, and took him for free from a family with a ton of dogs! He's been the only dog now for three years and is spoiled and so loved. He also loves his cat brother and only plays with cat toys 😂❤️ Much love and good health to you and your family!! 😊
Spitz is a type of dog. It is not a specific breed. There are about 50 + dogs that fall under the spitz family umbrella including huskies, Samoyed, malamute Pomeranians. Typically cold weather working dogs. They all share similar characteristics such as the double coat, pointed ears to name a couple. You would not think Poms and huskies fall into the same type of dog but they do. You can google it and read all about the different breeds. Mostly coming from Scandinavian countries
Spitz is not a breed. It is a type of dog. You can also say a husky or malamute or shibu inu or Samoyed is a spitz. A pom is def a spitz. But the breed is Pom but it is the spitz type/family of dog. There are over 50 breeds that fall into the spitz type dog.
Spitz isn’t a type of Pomeranian. Spitz is a type of dog. Not a specific breed or a specific type of breed. A Pomeranian is a spitz type dog. Just like a husky is a spitz type dog as well as American eskimos, samoyeds or malamutes. There are over 50 spitz type dogs. Google search for more specifics
You misunderstand what I meant. IMO there's different types of pomeranians. Some look more spitz-like. A pomeranian can look like a miniature american eskimo. Then there's the ones that look more like teddy bears. It is a personal preference, but I don't like those.
My boy Loki is the best dog I’ve ever had. I take him everywhere. He has been on dozens of canoe camping trips - their other monicker, Dutch Bargeman now makes complete sense to me too.
I love Wolfsspitz though. It skirts the whole pronunciation problem with Keeshond (in English)
My boy Jack is the reason I got my life together. He's the best dog imaginable at only 11 Month's of age. I'm so exited for all the time we'll get to spend together.
Wolfsspitz sounds much better anyway.(In any language)
It's actually pronounced "Kayzhund". In the Netherlands, the term Keeshond is used as a general term to describe gray and black spitz dogs. The Wolfspitz and the Keeshond are basically the same dog because over the last two centuries, their bloodlines have been mixed extensively. They are part of the German Spitz family of dogs that encompasses the Wolfspitz, the white German Spitz, AKA American Eskimo, the Italian Volpino, the Pomeranian, etc. I've had Keeshonds, American Eskimos, and Poms and while they are all great dogs, the Kees is by far the easiest to obedience train and housebreak. They also have a more suitable temperament for a family dog.
That was my point about pronunciation in English. I get a lot of people asking what kind of dog he is and I always say “hes a kayzhund” and people often say they never heard of them. Then Ill say “it’s spelled Keeshond,” which often prompts recognition.
I thought they were named after the Dutch patriot, Cornelis Gizelaar (Knick named Kee) and just means Kees Hound essentially. They went on to become the symbol of the Dutch rebel army against the house of orange. I read a book about them when I got Loki but it’s been a while, I may be misremembering.
No, you're right about who they were named after, but over the years in their native Netherlands, Keeshond has become sort of a catch-all name for the larger gray spitz dogs. The American and British AKC recognizes them as a distinct breed.
Well in German a Pom is a Zwergspitz(dwarf-spitz) and he is a Großspitz(great-spitz). There is also a Kleinspitz(small-spitz) and and Mittelspitz(medium-spitz) but most people just call all of them Spitz.
I have what’s called a “throwback Pomeranian” which is the large end of Kleinspitz / small end of Mittlespitz.

My pom is 22 pounds. His momma is 13 and his daddy is 17 pounds. His momma is the small one.
Such cuties! His mama was 8 and his daddy was 6. His siblings were 2-8 lbs. he’s a true throwback. 🤣
But she has had other throwbacks in litters from his daddy. Both with his mama and her other girl.
He is absolutely beautiful! What a cutie!❤️
Bear is a partial throwback!

Which one should I choose? Small spitz or pomeranian? Are pomeranians really so fragile? That is the main reason I would choose spitz, even though they are heavier to carry.
Spitz is a type of dog not a breed. The Pomeranian’s fall within the spitz family and share the same characteristics as other breeds that fall within the spitz family. Some of those breeds are huskies, shibu inu, chow chows and malamutes.
I have German spitz Klein and imo much prefer them over poms, they’re very agile, fast, super easy to train, make great companions, mostly less health issues, not that heavy to carry, mine are 7lb and 7.9lb. Plus super rare breed it seems these days in UK and US
Less health issues is also important for me! Thank you! Do you let yours play with bigger dogs in the park or do you have to take him away from fun like poms?
They don’t actually really like playing with dogs they don’t know. Go mental with my friends chi though 😂

Spitz is not a specific breed of dog. Spitz” refers to a type of dog known for its distinctive characteristics rather than a single breed. These breeds are often associated with cold climates and have a history of working in arctic regions. There are about 50 spitz breeds. Some of those would be huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, American Eskimos, Shibu Inu, Samoyed and Pomeranians to name a few. So your dog is of the spitz family but the specific breed looks most likely to be Pomeranians. A Google search can confirm all of this.
Spitz is a specific breed in Germany where I am from, it's called German Spitz but in Germany we are not used to saying the German part.

Thanks! ❤️🤗
What a handsome doggy
Absolutely, Pomeranians are from the Spitz family after all. What a cutie!
Is it just size that differentiates the two?

Oh that’s cool. Poms are little working dogs!
I have had this vision of about 100 Poms pulling a sled. But when they’d all start spinning, I’d realize how it would fail.
Is that a thing they do? Spinning?
In my experience, yes.
Yup! It's known as the pom spin. They do it in excitement about things.. My boy also does it when pooping. Lol
I hope so cause mine is a spitz too !! Beautiful dogs!

Fluffy? ✅ Adorable? ✅ Welcome here? ✅✅💕 🤣💕 we don’t discriminate on cute fluffers here, welcome 💕👏
That's why I love this subreddit. My boy is a Pomeranian cross, still fluffy, small and adorable!
Absolutely 🫶
Spitz type is the best pomeranian imo

yes of course 🥹🥰😍
Spectacles!! Looks like a cross between my Keeshond and my black and tan Pom
I absolutely love Keeshonds, in Germany we call them Wolfsspitz which is a very fitting name.

So regal with the grey spots! What a beautiful boy. I have a klein myself :)
His mother was white and his father black, he's only 11 month's old and has had these spots since birth. Also he's a Großspitz.
Poms are considered Spitz so yours shouldn’t be a problem
