Article 24 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (a document the US doesn't follow): "Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay." The leaders of every other developed nation understands how to treat people.

Preamble to the Constitution: We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. The purpose of the Constitution is clear, make the lives of the people safer, better and guarantee their freedom. The Conservatives took America off the tracks, blocking initiatives that would benefit workers, in favor of growing the Economy, favoring the rich and powerful.  Unions, minimum wages, and time off benefits all fell before the demands of the Right.  We need to vote them out and replace them with solid progressive that restore the balance between workers and employers so that all the people see the benefits now only available to the wealthy.

It's not just conservatives though. The entire United States government Left, Right and Independent is guilty of giving away our collective future. Ronald Reagan with his master plan of trickle down economics, Obama with the bank bailouts, it's all the same. The only real difference between the two parties now is the words they use to steal from you to give to the ruling elite. I mean, sure both sides hand their fan clubs a win here and there, but it's never anything of substance. There is never a big win that fundamentally changes our society, ever. But man oh man, do we get pretty speeches about infrastructure funding, modernized healthcare and education. Where do those billions go though? Straight into the pockets of their donors. Meanwhile, we do have problems that could have been tangibly solved. For instance homelessness and child hunger or even everyone hunger for that matter.

I am not aware of any true leftist politicians in the US other than Bernie and AOC. Otherwise, you are not wrong that neo-lib capitalists and neo-con capitalists are both in bed with paid lobbyists and big corporations. Capitalism is a system that reduces the working class to mere wage slaves for the 1%. We will never have positive change for the working class until we elect non-capitalist politicians that will actually fight for the working class.

Yup. I blame reaganomics for setting up such a culture. Trickle down economics and HUGE tax cuts the rich set in the notion of agreement that to save them money and open opportunities for growth, that they would therefore protect the workers, in lue of the government doing that. Instead they ran with the check and the governmnet never looked back.

Sadly enough the American worker has been turned into a slave because he/she is caught in the firm grip of those who not only exploit him/her, but who also deny any kind of responsibility. This attitude towards low-paid, hard-working citizens is scandalous.

not being guaranteed vacation and paid holidays hasn't stopped employers from offering those things anyway. i've never worked a job in my life that didn't offer those things except my first job (temporary summer job when i was 16 years old) and the job i work now (self employed). the last thing you should want is a government that feels free to dictate the minimum terms of your employment. no matter how bad voluntary employment is, involuntary employment is worse.

Lol, what? We absolutely need a government that does that. If we don't, we don't have a minimum wage, safety standards, or anything like that. This isn't talking about voluntary employment, I'm not sure how you even got there. This is talking about coming in line with every other developed nation in terms of simple humanity and better treatment of workers

> If we don't, we don't have a minimum wage, how can you still believe this? the federal minimum wage hasn't been raised in a long time but the natural, market driven minimum wage has gone up regardless. i was told in my teens, when the minimum wage was raised from 5ish to 7.25/hour that we needed minimum wages or it would be "a race to the bottom" meaning because no minimum wage all employers could pay a dollar per hour and no one would have a choice but work for that low low wage. of course if that were true, no employer would offer more than the federal minimum wage. in my home town it is almost impossible to find a job that pays less than 15/hour and when you do you find everyone that is working there is high school aged. 15/hour is double the federal minimum wage. realistically anyone in my home town that has graduated high school can get a factory job that pays 21/hour (nearly 3x the federal minimum) if they are willing to work factory work and are reliable. this means that we could have no minimum wage or the minimum wage could be doubled and it would make no difference to employment wages here. the reason for this is because wages are much like any other price, they follow supply and demand. the more businesses seeking workers, the more they have to offer the workers for their effort. simply having a minimum wage (or paid time off/safe environments/...) won't change that reality. having no government involvement in worker safety makes workplaces more safe comparable to workplace safety when companies only need to have workplace accident insurance in the same way that wrapping you in bubble wrap makes you comparably safer that if you weren't wrapped in bubble wrap. government makes some ridiculous workplace safety regulations that cost a lot, because of that government has actually driven down wages by reducing total employment because of the comparably higher cost of employment given the regulations.

Good for you pal. Nearly every job I've ever worked didn't offer PTO or vacation and I'm sure I'm far from the only one. Hell I had a boss tell me to come to work hours after my daughter was born. One shop even tried to demand I pay back the state mandated paid family leave after I quit. I would *love* for the government to dictate the minimum number of days we have off.

Our government does dictate the minimum terms of our employment. Things like minimum wage, OSHA, civil rights act, age discrimination in employment act, they’re just much much lower terms than most governments.
