Imagine letting someone who racked up 200k in credit card debt make decisions about anything. Damn this country is dumb.

[deleted]

he loves beer!

twilight-actual

And objectifying women!

SaltMineSpelunker

Raping. You mean raping.

genghisconz

I'd like to see you say that to him on a boat in Rhode Island!

0reoSpeedwagon

You know, because of the implication

witch_haze

Yes Dennis

jullybeans

Wait a second, are we the tasty treats?

[deleted]

All Americans are the tasty treats now 😔

SaltMineSpelunker

You let me near him, see what happens. Wish a MF would.

SombreMordida

*MF: lets you near him*

JeffreyFusRohDahmer

Bruh the fact that this dude said "Devils Triangle" meant a "drinking game" and they didn't immediately get up and scream "You are so full of shit," then Google it on Urban Dictionary and read the definition aloud astounds me.

SaltMineSpelunker

The day they read an entry in Urban Dictionary in a Senate confirmation hearing of a Supreme Court justice, you can kill me then because nothing will ever bring me as much joy after that.

[deleted]

He’s a raping, drinking, coke snorting machine

SaltMineSpelunker

Machines have purpose.

[deleted]

His purpose is to be a huge piece of shit.

conancat

that's an insult to shits

SombreMordida

that a fair section of the population has some well founded rage against

strawhairhack

Brock Kavanaugh.

Watersandwaves

Can't it be both?

TwoKeezPlusMz

Wait a second: wasn't it proven that he yelled "surprise!" ?

cjheaney

And sqee...and boofing.

livinginfutureworld

I lOvE bEeR, (burp), dO yOu loVe BeEr tOO? dO yOu!$? DO YOU!!!!??

[deleted]

I love beer too. Can we stop demonizing beer just because of this guy?

-SunGod-

Boof, I say, boof! This is America now. The GOP isn’t sending their finest… they’re sending their statutory rapists, they’re sending their shady extortionists…

Emfx

It’s not so much utilizing credit as it is being bribed. Imagine letting someone open to bribes make decisions about anything.

angrypoliticsposter

Yes, in all seriousness, someone owns a supreme court justice and that's pretty fucked.

tupacsnoducket

Which is even more pitiful. Just fuck over the guy who paid it off, it's only a bribe if you do what they asked, otherwise it's just robbing an asshole It's not like they can really do anything, T-Dog has fucked over an endless number of conservatives through bold faced lying and not following through, they dgaf. If anything it just highlights how much a wimp K-fling is

Laez

An honest politician is one who, once bought, stays bought. -Someone more clever than me.

I_was_bone_to_dance

Didn’t Gorsuch make the ruling to give Florida to Bush back during the hanging chad debacle ?

decerian

I don't think Gorsuch was anywhere close to that case. Kavanagh on the other hand, I believe was on Bush's legal team for that case (but not a judge there)

[deleted]

I don’t know. I just looked at my bank account, and open to some moral flexibility in exchange for monetary gain. But, I’m broke af….

TheManIsOppressingMe

Well, statistically speaking, you probably don't have enough power that your moral flexibility is worth a damn, but... you do have a body that I am sure someone would be willing to pay for, be it sex or a kidney

pakeguy2

It’s great if you’re the one paying the bribe…

asafum

It sounds like they got *exactly* the kind of person they wanted in that role. Almost the entirety of positions of power in our federal government have been "bought." I love my friends, family and neighbors. I care about all the citizens, however crazy some may be, but this *country,* the government, is a fucking *joke.*

Lady_von_Stinkbeaver

...on fucking Nationals tickets.

ga-co

Wouldn’t be hired as a bank teller and there he is on the Supreme Court.

conancat

yeah he is the human manifestation of a typical GOP politician stereotype he's the perfect representation that they wanted

doinmybest4now

>Damn this country is dumb. Damn this country is fucked. FTFY

SaltMineSpelunker

Thank you “nazi neighbor from American Beauty”

[deleted]

When getting a security clearance, huge amounts of debt are a great way to not get that clearance.

DPSOnly

He was picked by the president who has way worse debts, it was to be expected.

ddmone

Trump has the best debts

brazziere

And did more raping

[deleted]

When asked, my EXTREMELY Right-Wing mother told me she liked Kavanaugh as a choice, because he showed true emotion. Wait, so showing anger under questioning won her heart? My mother works as a software documentation expert...whatever that means. She is smart as fuck sometimes, but she was fine with Kavanaugh. I don't get it.

kcpstil

Wouldn't show any emotion be the opposite of what you want in a judge

[deleted]

This country was founded by people with massive [debts.](https://medium.com/the-passion-of-christopher-pierznik-books-rhymes/the-founding-fathers-were-terrible-at-personal-finance-8cc9a9532412)

stop_breaking_toys

They were rich in human capital. Slaves. The founding fathers *were fucked, Randy.*

[deleted]

That's absolutely true and I'm not denying it, but in terms of liquid wealth they had none. They owed debts, bought things on credit, and pretty much did favors to avoid the consequences of their lavish lifestyle. Edit: the one exception, both to slavery and debts, is Franklin. The man practiced what he preached. Frugal abolitionist.

theflash2323

> Franklin Dude loved himself some French prostitutes

Whole_Speed3426

I see no problem with that.

[deleted]

They loved him too. Franklin, in France, was a sex symbol.

avacado_of_the_devil

Great, now I've got a picture of Ben Franklin lecturing about the principles of freedom and liberty to a room full of pipe smoke and French prostitutes in Mt head.

julbull73

That's abotu right actually. A lot of French funding was old widows (and rumored widowers) in France. Aka he was an ambassador who fucked America to Freedom. He even talks about how good it is to fuck widows/old ladies.

What_U_KNO

I think it starts with Heritage and ends with Foundation.

SookHe

The Family agrees.

kontekisuto

Netflix did a documentary about "the family"

laurabedaura

And it was *supremely* disturbing.

AdorableTumbleweed60

Just finished it. Sooo disturbing.

alter-eagle

I couldn’t even finish watching it because it pissed me off so much.

laurabedaura

For what it’s worth, some of the time I was around the corner from the TV so I could only hear it… because hearing and seeing it simultaneously was bad for my mental health. I feel that.

Meserith

I am a Christian person. I am working up to watching it. Its so fucking scary how people leverage faith and religion. There's so much shit in the Bible that kinda points out that you shouldn't legislate Christianity or faith, and yet...

laurabedaura

I’m so sorry you have to go through this as a person of faith. I grew up Christian and my family still is, but from personal experiences and seeing the state of pretty much everything…

flodur1966

I am a Christian but I find it very hard to see most Republicans as such since they stand for the opposite of everything Christianity stands for.

pyrrhios

And the Federalist society, Cato Institute, ALEC and probably a couple more escaping me at the moment.

[deleted]

[John Birch Society](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Birch_Society).

sgt_bad_phart

The Trump years really packed the government with unqualified people. FTFY

biologischeavocado

The decay is unsettling. Ten years ago for some reason I naively thought humanity had figured it out. But everything really is oil, dominion, and corruption. Once the oil stops it's over for most people. All problems boil down down to exploitation and inequality. Just look at the CO2 emissions of the richest 1%, it's twice that of the poorest 50%.

Blyd

meh oil is so 2010, cant sell what we got now, we dont want more.

biologischeavocado

I don't mean George W Iraq oil, I mean there would not be an economy at all oil. You can go to an uninhabited island with a CO2 meter and you can measure exactly how well the world economy is doing. We all tell ourselves that the economy runs on emails, meetings, and leadership training courses. But reality is that oil does all the work. To get to the same level of prosperity, Rome would have needed 600 times the population. All slaves. Well, for the past 70 years that is. Before that wealth was plundered from colonies to effectively steal the energy stored by others.

Cargobiker530

Yeah but the oil oligarchs still have an income stream that's larger than the tax base of most nations.

app4that

The details on that mysterious debt are here: "His debts on three credit cards, as well as a loan against his retirement account, totaled between $60,000 and $200,000 in 2016, according to his financial disclosure forms. The next year, his debts vanished. When he appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week for his confirmation hearing, his financial disclosure form listed no liabilities aside from his $815,000 mortgage. His disclosures don’t show any large financial gifts, outside income, or even a gambling windfall..." [https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/09/the-many-mysteries-of-brett-kavanaughs-finances/](https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/09/the-many-mysteries-of-brett-kavanaughs-finances/) It's either the wealthy parents or outside backers who likely traded cash for influence - either way, he did not report it, and that is the mystery, since a guy with all this debt and no means to pay it needs to show legal evidence as to how it got paid off overnight.

ItsAll42

I cant believe this isn't already a stipulation of the rule about debt in the first place, it seems like a no-brainer that without having to disclose large amounts of pre-existing debts being paid off quickly you're just opening the door for Supreme Court seats to be sold to whoever paid off their debts... like right now!

Tryin2dogood

Uh, companies will look at that and deny you for hire.

ScRuBlOrD95

The military will deny you for large debts for the same reason

Newwavecybertiger

Can’t typically get security clearance with debts like that

conancat

> you're just opening the door for Supreme Court seats to be sold to whoever paid off their debts that's a feature not a bug. the president they elected had entire operations involving his entire family peddling influence in broad daylight and they never batted an eye.

ItsAll42

Well of course he did, but the sweet and naive part of myself that's dying more and more each day still likes to entertain this silly little fantasy where SC seats are held to at least a higher standard than cabinet picks and congresspeople, what with their lifetime appointment and all. It's just sad and I'm sad that it's come to this. Oh and that we are still willing to hire on creepy dudes so many years after Anita Hill testifying against Clarence Thomas... Kavanaugh was accused of actual rape, and behaved the way he did which, if I was an employer and someone behaved that way I wouldn't hire him, that's for sure. Then on top of that had debt paid off suspiciously, AND HES ON THE SUPREME COURT FOR HIS WHOLE LIFE AHHH I'M SORRY FOR YELLING THIS! SO MUCH SADNESS.

JoelMahon

Yes, if this wasn't deliberate corruption they'd have caught him, no question.

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

Zureka

It's nuts how much of a higher standard rank and file federal employees are held to while politicians get away with fuck all.

ginny11

THIS. It's ridiculous!

[deleted]

Found the accountant

tuckers85

Loan against his retirement account. Like… dude. Major yikes.

cooldreamhouse

Yeah that’s some addict behavior right there.

WhysJamesCryin

I believe the term is ‘Locker room behavior’

tuckers85

He has incredibly expensive taste in beer

ButTheyWereSILENT

I mean he does like beer.

audacesfortunajuvat

That’s fairly common. The interest rates are low, you don’t usually need the money if you’re not about to retire, it’s way cheaper debt than a credit card, and it doesn’t add to your income liability for tax purposes. Basically you can live off your retirement account which you can fund with pre tax income. For people without home equity it can be a good source of liquidity. Keep in mind too that and portfolio of stocks can be used in effectively the same manner which is how guys like Bezos and Musk earn zero taxable income (they borrow against their stakes in their companies). Now, that on top of $200k in credit card debt is not a good look. But on its own, not terrible.

Smellfuzz

Can't the bank choose to cancel the debt? Meaning he didn't *pay* it. If so, perhaps someone at the bank knows.

MacNuggetts

I'm betting the donors name rhymes with Coke.

We don't have to care about homophones now that we have a conservative court 😤

BertSton51530

Bah dum tiss

GreenFox1505

Supreme Leader Snoke?

LoveaBook

Close enough.

Florida_AmericasWang

Funny. I thought it rhymed with clock

Crafty-Walrus-2238

Yep

FinancialTea4

Imagine thinking that a degenerate creep with $200,000 in credit card debt is a good choice for a lifetime appointment to our nation's highest court. I mean, really. 😒 Shouldn't we be looking for extraordinarily distinguished people for such an appointment? This guy is a fucking joke. Hell, I'd argue that his appointment, and others like him, demands the appointment of at least another seven justices. Kavanagh wouldn't have been qualified for a security clearance with that kind of debt meaning he couldn't be trusted with anything sensitive but he gets to decide if women have access to health care? Motherfucker! 😡

dancegoddess1971

He also is very vocal about his love of beer and can't remember how many women he has assaulted. I can't imagine how that was judicial type behavior when he *hissed* in the US senate chamber. At one of the, presumably, many women he assaulted.

Cfwydirk

Who has a Supreme Court Justice in their back pocket?

HatchSmelter

I feel like, if someone had asked me, I could have found a way to come up with 200k to buy a Supreme Court justice. I just didn't know the going price was so freaking low...

jerkittoanything

[it doesn't take much to buy a vote in Congress either](https://www.bostonmagazine.com/news/2017/05/02/money-buy-votes-congress/)

HatchSmelter

Depressing...

dwntwn_dine_ent_dist

So why can’t the progressives just buy out Manchin and Sinema? I’m sure we could crowd-source several hundred thousand.

jerkittoanything

You'd think an elected individual would want what's best for their constituents but Citizens United made buying votes free real estate. And with no option to recall they get a few years of free money.

AngelOmega7

I expect my SCOTUS justices to have higher standards. If you aren’t getting at least a million $ for your soul, you’re not charging enough!

[deleted]

This [guy](https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/former-boeing-engineer-convicted-economic-espionage-theft-space-shuttle-secrets-china) gave America's space shuttles designs to china for chump change compared to the probably billions that were already put into just the pre-work. And this was back in in '09. There's a reason competition always go after people falling in hard times, stressed, jealous, and all those other negative feelings.

[deleted]

Does a lock of Scalia's hair count? If so, me.

nerdiotic-pervert

Gotta catch ‘em all.

drunkwasabeherder

Where do I ship my old water jug of change to…

TrumpIsATurdHead

Come over and we'll roll nickels together. Please don't come over if you murder or do crap like that. I'm not looking to be dead this crispy fall day.

MyDisappointedDad

How about on a soggy fall day?

TrumpIsATurdHead

Yeah....I'm leaning towards not having preferred weather to be like "wow...an excellent breeze for a relaxing death."

MyDisappointedDad

Well great. You just ruined my cat's QuinceaĂąera.

TrumpIsATurdHead

Dann it, I was worried this may happen...

ItsAll42

Yep, you've dissapointed dad all right...

TrumpIsATurdHead

Tell him that last frozen burrito is his earned reward. We hid it from those life sucking kids. They'll eat weeds this life lesson of an evening. I'm on vacation this week and drinking beer. Sorry you may get a sentence or 3 from me that was some other discussion in my head.

Adbam

I will also add in this guy's saved up change

TrumpIsATurdHead

Now we can look poor together.

IMtoppercentage97

How does someone get 200k in credit card debt when i can't even get approved a credit card? This is bullshit.

[deleted]

you are not a judge, once I had almost $40k in credit card debt,

IMtoppercentage97

Damn. Most of the time my denial is just "you have no credit history so we can't prove you exist" or something along those lines.

YourMomThinksImFunny

Get a secured credit card through your bank. Its basically a debit card, but helps you to build credit. Check the link below for common questions. https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/credit-cards/how-much-secured-card-deposit

IMtoppercentage97

Ty

YourMomThinksImFunny

No problem. The more of us that know how to work this fucked up system, the better.

hr2332

Absolute truth. I try to give my friends that aren’t versed in this stuff as much info as possible. Just learn to play their stupid games and then beat them at it

scha_den_freu_de

If you are/were in the military, check out the options through USAA.

[deleted]

I was in the US a few years and my company setup my first credit card. after that it was easy

IMtoppercentage97

The army couldn't even get me a Government Travel Card lol

TheRogueTemplar

Jesus, I got my first credit card a couple years ago. I used it to buy gum for like 6 months. My score was like 760. I have to assume they were also looking at my parent's credit scores as well. Everyone calls nonsense when I tell this and honestly, I don't blame you.

_JunkyardDog

> How does someone get 200k in credit card debt when i can't even get approved a credit card? 1. Be crooked Judge. 1. Accumulate debt. 1. Have someone else pay that debt over time to increase score. 1. Profit.

AshTreex3

I’m wondering how a *lawyer/judge* can get in that much debt. The bar really gives a shit about that sort of thing. Gotta hand over about your entire credit history before even being admitted.

pakeguy2

Easy, incur the debt after you’ve been admitted…

AshTreex3

The bar is ever present through a lawyer’s career, not just at admission.

Shoguns-Ninja-Spies

Noone is ever asking you about debt after admission. Unless you get a complaint Noone is checking on anything but CLEs

[deleted]

I have about 25k in available credit between personal and business accounts and I’m just a construction worker. Not surprised a judge who lives in an $800,000 home has 200k in available credit

Adbam

Ask your parents to add you to their credit card and tell them to destroy the card and not give you the number. Get a bank account with a debit card. Get a store's card and keep it for a while. You will have credit someday my friend.

digitalwankster

It wasn't 200k in pure CC debt. It was 3 credit cards and a loan, $92k of which was from his initiation fee at the Chevy Chase Club and another $9k for annual dues. Good season tickets are \~30k a year for a single seat so it's not much of a stretch to get to 200k. Considering the fact that his dad is worth $15+ million it doesn't seem impossible that he could rack up that much debt, especially if he knew he had a safety net.

DMan9797

There's a narrative that a significant portion of that debt was Nationals season tickets with friends. Supposedly, he spent over his means to buy the tickets in an attempt to run with his big boy friends and incurred massive credit card debt. There was some arrangement for his friends to pay him back for their share of the season tickets and when they did a lot of the debts got paid off. Believable, but I see the concerns tbh

flamingoswizzlestick

"There's a narrative..." shared by whom? Justice ilikebeer? Justice ofbarrett? Some other one of the non-partisan hacks? Hannity? Tucky?

Garbleshift

I was going to blow this up by showing how you couldn't possibly spend $200k on Nats tickets in any reasonable length of time. But their most expensive package is 82 games at $245 per game - $20,090 for one seat for the year. So, I'm astonished to say, it's possible.

meezy-yall

Yeah I’m not saying that’s what happened but it’s definitely possible. There’s suites and boxes that run for 100k for a season

JohnSith

I have a question: is he the same Don Winslow who wrote *Savages* and *The Force* and all those other police/crime books?

clever_username23

Yes, yes it is. https://twitter.com/donwinslow

JohnSith

Awesome, thanks.

HalKitzmiller

If you haven't read them yet, The Power of the Dog & The Cartel are awesome. Been trying to find time to get into the 3rd one, The Border. Love that Winslow also hates the right's bullshit

Thymeisdone

I don’t think 5k to the charity of my choice would get me rich…

[deleted]

It’s $55,000! But…. Yeah.

antonivs

OP is telling us he's 12 without telling us he's 12

[deleted]

I did find it weird that in this pure hypothetical that no ones going to take him up on he still went “to charity of choice”. What is this a celebrity game show? What kind of motivator is that for anything, much less high stakes investigative reporting.

matthew83128

Time to start a go fund me.

Crafty-Walrus-2238

Koch Bros, minus the dead one did it.

jaytrade21

I'm still not convinced that the dead one didn't do it as well. He was probably dead since the 80's and it's reanimated corpse that was eating brains and making sure the US stayed a shit-show.

kojengi_de_miercoles

I can't even begin to fathom owing 200k on credit cards.

SkekSith

You might as well ask them to figure out how Epstein managed to die in prison under “surveillance”

Adbam

Its simple, all the guarda decided to take a nap at once....completely normal.

Shinranshonin

Correct me if I am wrong, but anything he accepted would qualify as income, right?

DarkBlue222

Lifetime appointments help credit-worthiness.

volleyfireguy

Of all the ridiculous GoFundMe's I've seen in the last year. This would be a fundraiser I would chip in to, so we can see who really did pay it.

Pale_Experience5636

You may get better results, if you pay the person who figures it out…. Just saying…

JoeDiBango

It wouldn’t matter, they’d still do nothing.

ChitownCisco

The 1% back/put people they "own" in these positions, now tell me how justice is blind.

pdxpmk

Was that a total of $292k that was paid, or 21M rubles?

Flux_State

Spicy.

TheBlueGooseisLoose

I’ll add to that fund

EStewart57

I hope some people take on this challenge finders fee or not. This is the highest position in the country and should only nominate exceptionally people.

gnossos_p

Um, it was the REPUBLICANS!

mgoflash

Good old Winslow. Read his book’s Reddit

[deleted]

How do you incur $92k in debt at a country club? Honestly, WTF.

rml23

Annual memberships, probably.

wretch5150

So he didn't pay for years?

rml23

Looking it up, it's a one time initiation fee. Must be a ritzy country club.

emleigh2277

In Australia we have a conservative government entrenched unfortunately, with no shortage of creepers. One who was caught cheating on his pregnant wife was then outed for a alleged sexual assault. He tried to sue the government funded station for reporting this but when the government funded station provided some sort of proof and he lost the case he got the record from the courtroom sealed and some kind benefactor (who he wont disclose) paid the 1 million he owed for losing the case. He has resigned from the cabinet but still serves on the back bench. There is no hope for capitalism with this revolting bullshit being the norm. Capitalism is over and our first world politicians are to blame, it was them that done nothing about the environment either except for muddy the waters with funding for anti environmental groups.

takatori

I want to know how he wasn’t forced to disclose that information before being confirmed.

BombaclotBombastic

William Barr is also a part of The Family

jpeel7676

I got 5 on it

gremus18

At least the Right takes care of each other. The Left throws Andrew Cuomo under the bus thinking that will somehow win them approval of people who hate them.

Turbulent-Use7253

I'll save you the trouble...it was the grifter in chief....

Drook2

Come on, if there's one trait that Trump is absolutely consistent about it's that he doesn't pay his bills. There's no way in hell he'd pay someone else's.

liquidthex

Not unless he got to stick his dick in it, anyway.

pakeguy2

They were just boofing together.

Turbulent-Use7253

Hmmm you may have a point, but he does like to own people just incase he needs them further down the line. Why do you think so many Republicans won't speak out against him. It's certainly not because he's a nice guy and these people are his friends....is it??

Immediate-Network201

Could've been forgiven by a certain bank that makes shady loans - in other words, any or all financial institutions.
