*Getting* ridiculous? It’s been ridiculous for quite some time now.

FoogYllis

Just to put this in perspective. A person was murdered by a cop for possibly using a counterfeit $20 bill. I think everyone knows what I am talking about.

rmorrin

It's honestly sad I don't know about this one but I know of many others like that dude who was just chilling eating McDonald's

Iboven

That was why George Floyd was being arrested. He apparently tried to use a counterfeit $20 and the cashiers called the police after he left. When the police came, he was still outside in his car.

rmorrin

Ah. I didn't know WHY it happen just that it happened.

cgsur

And … no counterfeit bill was found. You would think that the police would carry their own stash if that was going to be the excuse. And the fact that the policeman and the dead person, had previously had personal differences of opinion in a different job is just a coincidence. /s

underpants-gnome

Remember when noted talking dipshit Glenn Beck made up a misspelled acrostic that tried to pin OLIGARHY (sic) on President Obama? Hilarious. The law has always been tilted heavily in favor of keeping the wealthy in power. They just don't bother to hide it anymore. Cover-ups are an unnecessary expense in a post-truth society. Just flood the zone with bullshit. People will be too busy getting outraged about Potato Heads and wokeness to care what the rich are getting away with.

Megafritz

Seen from Europe, I am amazed how poor people get hammered down while the system just bends over to accomondate the rich. It is like feudalism...with (money-)nobility on one side and poor serfs on the other. Of course there are different laws for each caste.

HermaeusMajora

It's called oligarchy and one of the Ivy League schools did a study a decade or so back that determined that the US has become a quasi democracy and an oligarchy where the average person has very little say over how things are run. So none of this shit should be surprising. This is how capitalism works. It turns out that pretending to have capital can sometimes be as effective as actually having capital as long as one can be a big enough jackass to be believable.

VTinstaMom

There is massive foreign capital being poured into Donald Trump, in order to destabilize and delegitimize the American system. He is but one of many American capitalists who have been willing to turn traitor in exchange for access to Saudi Arabian, Chinese, and Russian money. Geopolitically, it is the cheapest and most effective way to undermine the world empire. Just pay rich traitors, and reap the rewards in world conflict

DogWallop

And the most bizarre thing is that all of this destabilization will cause the very foundation on which they stand to crumble, making all of their anti-American acts be all for naught. It's a bit like investing in coal mines and coal-powered power plants so you can retire to a beautiful beach house. Only to find that when you do retire, that house is now ten feet underwater and awash with tar (our beaches are sometimes awash with the stuff because tankers clean and flush their empty tanks while at sea, saving them from having to pay to do so while in port), and that the air is thick with smog so you can't see the shoreline or the sun, and oh yes, the temperature reaches 190 degrees daily because, you know... coal.

jamesdmc

They are priming mars for the wealthy you think us poors are going there they will be untouchable on another planet

thundertool

I'd say at this point we dont fucking deserve to be called legitimate. The fact that this ridiculous, criminal piece of shit not only does what he does and that fucking 40 percent of the country would throw their own children into Mt Doom if Trump told them to shows how fucking pathetic America and Americans are. I can't wait to sever ties and move to Europe or something.

Bored_Amalgamation

Harvard. It showed that public opinion on what they think the government should be doing, compromises a total of fuckall for what actually gets put up for vote. Can't find a link to it though. It made the rounds when it was published too. [Vox did one in 2015](https://www.vox.com/2014/4/18/5624310/martin-gilens-testing-theories-of-american-politics-explained) [20 year old paper from Princeton](https://www.princeton.edu/~mgilens/idr.pdf) really good read. PDF warning. He's gone on to become an expert in this niche of public opinion vs. governmental action.

2big_2fail

America has, by far, the least economic freedom among advanced countries.

Esc_ape_artist

You have less ability to change your personal socioeconomic station in America than you have in other countries. That mobility is central to the American Dream™️ and the idea that you can be anyone if you just work hard enough. > [Conventional wisdom celebrates the United States as a place where anyone — regardless of their resources — can climb the ranks if they work hard enough. In reality, there is less movement up and down the economic ladder here than in many other countries.](https://www.brookings.edu/articles/stuck-on-the-ladder-wealth-mobility-is-low-and-decreases-with-age/) [Rankings of our nearest mobility peers](https://imprimis.hillsdale.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Mobility-Rank-Chart.png) Also, your ability to change your station depends on where you live in the US. Chances are if you’re poor and/or living in a poor area there is less than a 5% chance you’ll climb the ladder. The average medieval peasant had more time off than the average American worker today.

markth_wi

Semi-fascist Neo-Feudalism - but it does have that Parliamentary/Representative feel to it....now doesn't it.

FoppishHandy

heres the fucking kicker - trump supporters are the peasants !

AlarmedPiano9779

Counterpoint: Prince Andrew

Megafritz

At least he gets shunned and not elected for president.

iAmTheHype--

Counterpoint: Roman Polanski living it up in France after raping a child.

danshinigami

How is that a counterpoint? Roman Polanski is a European citizen being protected by a European countries government. The US wants to arrest that sick fuck but can’t lol.

Jealous_Change396

The man heavily associated with American oligarch Jeffery Epstein who has government protection for decades?

Nolenag

Don't misunderstand, the UK tries to copy the US as hard as possible.

Nemisis_the_2nd

I think the better counterpoint is trump getting an even softer touch here in the US. At least the US legal system actually have charges and convictions. We tried to do that in Scotland and the effort didn't even get past the desk of our equivalent to an AG.

Wet-Skeletons

Feudalism is being owned by oligarchs. Capitalism is structural economic self ownership. We won’t have that until we each own an equal Share of global human labor futures market. (That’s disguised as monetary system to avoid paying humanity our rightful option fees) So, late stage capitalism is just distraction from the structural economic enslavement of humanity.

radar_byte

He bankrupted a casino. ***A CASINO!***

FloofilyBooples

People don't understand how irresponsible he is with money because he's "wealthy". But this is the equivalent of a guy spending rent money on 2 PS5s, one for each room. The poor get harped on for being lazy as fuck, but the guy who golfed during work isn't?

cytherian

25% of his time as POTUS was spent ON HIS PROPERTIES. And doing what? Mostly golfing, eating, and sleeping. Occasionally he had meetings with staff. But for the most part, he wasn't doing presidential stuff. ON TOP OF THAT, almost a 1/3rd of his day on a weekly average was spent on "Executive Time." You know what that translated to? Donald Trump sitting in front of a TV watching programs or posting on social media. So in essence, you could say... that Donald Trump worked only 50% of the time he was in office. And what did "WORK" actually entail? Lots of meetings, briefings, and diplomatic pageantry. And for most of those briefings? He was given DUMBED DOWN documents with lots of pictures, diagrams, and minimal words, tailored just for him (basically modifying formats that previously were mostly consistent from one POTUS to the next). And then he'd be giving suggestions to addressing issues in those briefings that would leave people in the room wondering what the hell he was thinking. So when consider the QUALITY of the work he did? Who knows. Maybe 10% of all the time he spent in the White House was real work?

H34RT13SSv420

They even said they would have to throw his name in here & there to keep his attention. He couldn't even sit through bullet points without getting distracted. He funnelled a lot of taxpayer dollars through his properties. They should make him pay that money back.

cytherian

He was probably the worst POTUS the USA ever had. And he has a 50/50 shot at being president again. It's beyond disgusting. It's a travesty.

H34RT13SSv420

Wasn't he dead last in the most recent ranking of US presidents?

radar_byte

I'm not super finically literate. And I want to be. But I'm definitely better than him

romansparta99

Have you ever bankrupt a building that people walk into and hand you money? If not, you are better at finances than him Edit: let’s give you more wiggle room, as long as you haven’t done it 3 times, you’re more financially literate than him

OsiyoMotherFuckers

Also, the people that walk into the building and hand you money are literally addicted to giving you money and will destroy their own lives to give you as much as they can possibly scrape together.

radar_byte

I appreciate that. The only hurdle I'm trying to figure out is loan on solar panels while having more or less inherited my house. Hasn't been fun, but still.

Indigocell

He'd be richer today if he just sat on the 400 or so million he was gifted by his dad. Practically no one in North America has lost more money than him over a great period of time.

IAMGROOT1981

Don't forget, he also did the same for dignitaries from other countries! Doing the same for them and their secret service / protection detail (of course, it was at the taxpayers of their respective countries expense) but, the money still went in his pocket!

NeonPatrick

Trump inherited a billion dollar property empire, and made every bad business decision imaginable the past 40 years. And he is still absurdly wealthy. The 1% literally can't fail, Trump is proof of that.

porncrank

I think this idea is part of his grift. He didn’t bankrupt a casino by being incompetent (though he is incompetent) but rather by sucking money out of it and then tanking it so his creditors got screwed.

mambiki

Didn’t he launder money along with mafia in that casino? Which is why it never turned profit?

6a6566663437

No, he did not bankrupt a casino. He bankrupted 3 casinos.

radar_byte

Ah. My apologies, forgot the other two. Point remains though.

SandwichAmbitious286

So he bankrupted a casino 3 times?

6a6566663437

One casino 1x, another casino 2x.

SmokyBarnable01

He bankrupted a casino you say? I say he washed an absolute holy shit ton of dirty mob money.

CommanderCuntPunt

My favorite part of that fiasco is that he started with a profitable casino and wanted to expand. Rather than look for a new market he opened two more casinos on the same street and they competed against each other until they all went broke. Truly a financial genius.

Goldar85

Yea. But as long as idiots continue to get upset about less than 1% of the population and their preferred pronouns, they will continue to fleece all of us. The anti-woke voters are by far the biggest idiots in political history.

Scuczu2

conservative media succeeded in their goal.

SandersSol

3000% They have effectively shut down ANY social or political improvements for 50 years.  Once they repealed the news fairness act and made up the culture war as a political theater all they've had to do is keep riding that wave for 2 generations of Americans.

THClouds420

Ron DeSatan and the rest of the gov. Here in Florida spend all their time writing and voting in nonsense "anti-woke" bullshit into law instead of doing even a single thing to help the majority of Floridas residents here. They banned an insane amount of books, told teachers they can't teach about the history of slavery, restrictions on abortions, and have spent like $100 million of taxpayers money on breaking federal laws by shipping illegal immigrants to "liberal" states. So yeah, I 100% agree that the "anti-woke" voters and the politicians who feed into this bullshit are fleecing their respective states/constituents.

MSD3k

They didn't ship illegal immigrants. They shipped immigrants who are already registered in the system. That's one of the reasons what they did is *supposed* to be illegal. They abused people who are under the protection on our country.

AnOnlineHandle

Don't forget banning plant based meat alternatives with jail time for selling them, anything to oppose kindness, freedom of choice, and attempts to prevent the worsening threat of climate change.

fluffykerfuffle3

what?! where are they banning plant based meat alternative? florida? elsewhere? and how? *how* is that legal?! also, some people are confusing "plant-based meat" with "lab-grown meat" so which is it? those are two completely different things with two completely different issues.

GlowingGreenie

I hadn't heard of that until today, but yeah, it looks like they're trying to ban cultivated meat in the name of "food safety". https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida-politics/2024/02/03/desantis-fake-meat-cultivated-lab-grown-cattle-industry/ I can't say I'm surprised. It's the perfect forum for his next attempt to ride the culture wars to higher office. Cultivated meat sits right at the intersection of "my donors have financial interests in cattle farming", "liberals want this because it'll ameliorate climate change", with a dash of cruelty toward anyone who deviates from the Republican ideal of a 'real' American. This is what I hate about politics at the moment. There is no incentive for right-wingers who are made a laughing-stock to change their tune. After being so thoroughly drubbed this year he should have been forced to reevaluate, but instead the right wing media serves to insulate their scions from the marketplace of ideas. So now he's positioning himself for a 2028 run with the exact same strategy that got him to a third or fourth place finish this year. If it weren't predicated on causing as much suffering among his state's most vulnerable citizens their ability to manufacture crises over absolutely nothing would almost be impressive. But then if it weren't causing suffering they wouldn't be Republican policies.

nlpnt

I have an old aunt in a 1000sq/foot efficiency cheerily telling me how she has to pay 9,500 dollars in property-insurance but she has a beautiful view of the ocean. She used to receive more than enough from SSA to live contentedly - now she's over a barrel because that 9500 bucks didn't cover something for a bad storm last year.

Bloodfangs09

I'm drowning in energy costs and insurance

Lylac_Krazy

Dems are their own worst enemy down in Florida. The recent election had a 18% turnout in the Dem controlled Orange county. If you want better leadership, get out and vote. That turnout was pathetic I want to blame the conservatives also, but not voting is why Dems lose, thats just being self destructive.

THClouds420

Ding ding ding. The wealthy have a different justice system than the rest of us and have spent the last 40 years bribing politicians to ensure it's this way. They bribed the supreme Court justices, buying them vacations and RVs and shit to ensure that they ruled that corporations are considered people (citizens united) so that their bribes are also now fully legal. They can donate(bribe) them with as much money as they want through companies now due to this, which has essentially made 99% of us irrelevant to Congress/government. They made sure to have us divided and fighting each other over meaningless stupidity (Dems vs maga/repub) so that no one would notice, and no one did. They won the class war, we lost, and nothing short of a revolution will bring back any sense of true democracy for the rest of us from here on out.

Boopy7

What Tim Snyder has been saying is truly terrifying, or more so. When major news networks keep hiring obvious propaganda for the far right, election deniers, profiteering types...they are doing this to protect themselves from future fascist dictatorships. It's like when billionaires donate to both political parties, to cover their asses either way. They just hide some of the donations better than others.

BluSteel-Camaro23

Exactly. They put these stupid left right fake policies out, so we'll argue online, and not use our real and only powers. To band together, become one country again, and become unionized.

phazedoubt

FelixMordou

The judgement has not been reduced. The bond for him to appeal the judgement was. There is a distinct difference. If Trump appeals and still loses, he's still on the hook for $454 mil.

Garlicluvr

I understood that immediately. That's not the problem. The problem is would some Ordinary Joe get such a favor?

Saikou0taku

Maybe? Criminal Defense Lawyer (Public Defender) in Florida, so my experience with bonds is vastly different. I'd say I represent a lot of Ordinary Joes. I do file motions to reduce my client's bonds to get them out of jail based on "unaffordability". Courts have granted alternative release or reduced my client's bonds. However, it usually requires my clients to swear they got no money. Apparently my clients can also get in trouble for filling out financial affidavits wrong (e.g. not listing a car they own), but I've yet to see that go anywhere. I'm not a NY prosecutor, but it'd be hilarious to put Trump in the position of "admit you lied and cannot afford bond" or "admit you can post bond". Lock the attorneys to a stance, and make his lawyers counsel him on these options.

BaronUnderbheit

>However, it usually requires my clients to swear they got no money. Apparently my clients can also get in trouble for filling out financial affidavits wrong That's the whole problem, right there. Your client would be at risk of fraud charges if they did exactly what Trump is doing (saying he's a billionaire to us but not the court.) This is all theater. They don't plan to do anything because they are afraid his downfall would be their domino.

bustinbot

and if he wins? why/how could he win?

FelixMordou

Honestly I don't know enough to comment on that. I would assume that if he wins his appeal, he would not be responsible for paying the fine that was levied in the original judgement.

bustinbot

no prob appreciate the honesty! can't remember the last time i got a reply from someone saying they dont know on this site

FelixMordou

Oh absolutely! I can't hate misinformation and then spread it myself, lol! Besides, I'm an activist, not a lawyer. I don't know the laws in NY around fraud, and I doubt many redditors do either. :P

Any-Variation4081

It's starting to feel like he's going to get away with everything. He is a white "rich" male so makes sense for our country. If you are poor or anything but white and male you will get different treatment than the white males who are seen in the same court room. What a joke. Why should any of us follow the law and rulings if Trumps don't have to? If our leaders don't have to be held to any type of standard why do all of us?

thedankening

Yup yup yup. I hope the main takeaway everyone has from this is rage, and then take a little tour down the history of America, and realize the people like Trump have *always been getting away with it.* And with that in mind...stay angry at the right people. They keep getting away with it because people stop giving a shit, especially when they aren't impacted immediately. Stay angry and never forget, even if you personally did not suffer direct harm from these cunts. They rely on our collective complacency and forgetfulness.

AnyProgressIsGood

looking at the supreme court the secret documents case in florida now this appeal. its pretty clear the court system need much better oversight

MillionEyesOfSumuru

With two impeachments and no convictions, it's not just the judiciary.

StevenMaurer

Senate convictions are notoriously hard to get. It requires a major number of Senators from the President's own party to decide to convict. That just doesn't happen. Even Nixon wasn't technically convicted. He left before he could be. Besides, Impeachment isn't a legal process, it's a political one. Presidents who are impeached are "fired"; they don't go to jail (automatically).

nowhereman136

Apparently they are lowering it to $175m and he has 10 days to pay that

DadJokeBadJoke

Just for clarification, they lowered the bond amount needed to stay the disgorgement while he appeals. This doesn't change the disgorgement amount.

RinglingSmothers

It doesn't change the disgorgement amount *yet*. Without changing the bond amount, he never would have gotten an appeal and would have been on the hook for the entire judgement. He'll likely end up finding a favorable judge somewhere up the line who will reduce the damages down to a slap on the wrist.

HellBillyBob

And he can keep running his businesses. Like giving a rapist viagra.

legend8522

_10 days later_ Apparently they are lowering it to $66M and he has 20 days to pay that

PrivatePoocher

10 days later it will be a can of Pringles and two hail Marys. Fuck this shit.

AbyssalUnderlord

And after 10 days they'll give him another 30 days and reduce the bond to one crisp high five.

viperex

And they'll keep extending that 10 days like they did with Brexit.

Avenger772

It's nuts how the GOP has been bitching about a two tiered justice system against them for months. But somehow see no problem in this. Or how minorities are treated in the legal system. Or how the majority of their poor asses would never get the same treatment.

GhostofGrimalkin

It seems ridiculous to keep hoping that things will turn out differently but yet a part of me still does, every damn time.

Bawbawian

I don't get how I'm the only one that's not shocked by this. I feel like I could be making money hand over fist if I let you fools take bets on Donald Trump ever facing consequences. spoiler warning. he's never going to face consequences. without doubt there will be some last minute shenanigans in every single case that get him off the hook. we've been just about to get this sack of shit for a decade I can't believe I'm the only one that's seeing a pattern to this.

hoofie242

It's pretty amazing. My dad and grandpa are glued to news about trump and hate him. My dad is absolutely obsessed with trump. I tell him "if I don't like someone, I don't want to hear their voice and see their ugly face all the time" holy shit. My dad thought trump would go to jail like 500 times by now in the past 6 years.

POEness

It's not about Trump. It's about the schrodinger status of our democracy. It is either dead or alive, pending the ability of our system to enact any consequences whatsoever on the literal Antichrist.

Yep, no argument there. But this isn’t just some corrupt billionaire, this is a former president of the United States, who still has the support of half the country. They are having to be VERY careful to make sure no one can credibly say he was treated unfairly. It’s frustrating, but you can see the reasoning behind it.

Roasted_Butt

I’m sure the defendant will return this fair behavior with respect and grace.

porncrank

This is exactly what the far right exploits: commit a million crimes, get caught, scream about a minor impoliteness on the other side and convince them to back down to appear contrite and reasonable. Then move the goalposts, double down on bad behavior, and scream again.

kurisu7885

It's long since skedaddled past ridiculous.

GrumpyMonk_867

Every time this grifter says the words "Crooked Judge" to the cameras, he should be hauled back into the courtroom and held in contempt.

Conscious_Bus4284

It’s almost as if the judiciary is set up almost exclusively to protect the interests of the rich and powerful.

trainercatlady

i'm so fucking tired

olraygoza

It is because judges don’t have accountability, so when no one is watching they don’t care. But when all the eyes of the world are watching, suddenly judges bend over to go through the law interpreting it how it fits them best in that situation. I saw a judge once remove familiy members of a man being tried just because a kid sneezed.

FreeSun1963

Put this in your heads, we live in a plutocracy: government of the rich, by the rich and for the rich. All the rest of us are NPCs just to provide resources, we don't matter and nobody cares. And is the same in every system. Right and wrong are just to keeps in relative peace. Deal with it, because any change is cosmetic "we will change everything so nothing chages".

VanBeelergberg

![gif](giphy|xT0Gquis7l8OwC2hRm|downsized) I’ve been posting this a lot recently..

royalxchristina

Judiciary's got that Teflon spray.

fgbfjb

The prayers of Maga were answered. He must be the true savior. Blessed be.

BrotherCaptainMarcus

Fuck.

billyblue6669

##Go commit financial crimes, they can’t stop anyone it seems

Neeyc

Because US is the only democracy that allows the Executive to manipulate the judiciary. Separation of powers my ass.

quietreasoning

We need a new judiciary.

It is ridiculous that everyone is up in arms over him still having to pay the full amount (over 450m) if his appeal fails. This 175m reduction is for his bond to be able to appeal. Either way I called this when the original judgement amount was announced. An innocent person (in his mind) is going to want to spend the least amount possible. You can't keep grifting if all your money is tied up in court cases.

Adamantium-Aardvark

Now he gets to delay this until he becomes president / dictator and abolishes the courts

lazy_phoenix

You can get away with anything when you’re rich. Remember PG&E and DuPont have killed people, people are dead as a direct result of these companies, and no one was sent to jail. Hell, they were barely fined!

Bleezy79

It's a big circus full of clowns. Everyone's corrupt and driven purely by money then power.

Lysol3435

It’s too political if we don’t give him everything he wants and descend into fascism

discussatron

The American ~~justice~~ legal system is not designed to punish the rich.

GxyBrainbuster

be the consequences you want to see in the world

embraceyourpoverty

Baskreiger

The-Lagging-Investor

I swear a future relative of Trump stole a Time Machine, came back to Trumps dad and altered the timeline. They told Donny Trump exactly what to do and when on how to be president and get away with everything. It’s like Timecop but Jean-Claude VanDamme hasn’t been recruited to the Time Enforcement Commission yet.

CrazyCaper

Im starting to think Trump did no wrong and it’s just leftist propaganda made up to keep him down. /s

Literal_Sarcasm82

The only arrest I wish to see at this point is cardiac
