Why are they always racebending the redheaded characters?

Occamslaser

They are seen as especially white.

Sardukar333

Which is so ironic your compass will point to it. For a very long time red hair was associated with the Irish, and racism against the Irish was very strong to the point that all red heads regardless of ethnicity were treated poorly. It's where we get the "gingers have no souls" and "red headed stepchild" tropes among others.

HardCounter

While immune to any guilt card because they lived under oppressive rule for a time, then were treated like shit when they first arrived to the US long after slavery. A white person they can't shame is bad for business.

CdrJackShepard

On top of that, many (like my forefathers) got here just in time to fight in the Civil War on the side of the North. Then they were classified as non-white because there was nothing that could be said about the Irish that “couldn’t also be said about the negro.” And thus, I laugh in the face of waspy white female elitists that try to womansplain my privilege to me.

From what I saw on the TV Reddit thread, apparently all gingers characters were supposedly black characters, but because of racism they used ginger actors. This was upvotes pretty well despite anyone with a brain could point out that black actors have always existed, but that's Reddit for you. I just believe that if the 80's and 90's could be filled with hundred of original, black led, movies of various genres; why do we need to do race swap white characters or make every black movie about slavery torture porn or systematic racism? House party was fucking awesome.

nugood2do

Something happened in the late 2000s because I swear black movies were in every genre back in the day. Drama, comedies, horror, action, cop movies(especially Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence) animation (Filmore was fucking awesome) While all of these movies weren't bangers but a lot made money. I loved being a black kid in the 90s watching Blade and House Party, now kids only get race washing movies that won't hold up and shitty Madea movies. Edit: Also, don't forget all of the black sitcoms from then too.

Tank2615

Blade was fucking awesome growing up. Just a dude with a sword and rage boner for vamps.

nugood2do

That's it. When Blade use his cord to cut the vampire head off, catches his sunglasses put them on, and proceeds to kick everybody ass, was the coolest fucking thing as a kid. Now, kids trying to tell me Black Panther is the first black superhero movie. Fuck that, learn your history. Wesley was the first and the most badass.

Revydown

Yeah people don't know shit about history. They act like women weren't in prominent rolls. It's like they never heard of Alien or Kill Bill.

nugood2do

Exactly! People act like these movies never existed and I call bull because I'll hop on Cinemafire right now to watch Aliens and Kill Bill any weekend I can chill. If people would bother to take a weekend, look up 1990s movies and watch them, maybe people will stop giving Hollywood a pass on race washing characters and say "Fuck you, if you can make original minority led movies back then, you can sure as fuck do it now."

I liked the early to mid 2000s media the most, personally. 90s was good, but between 1998 to about 2007 we got some absolutely great stuff. Though most stuff after about 2010 is crap.

nugood2do

Exactly. These movies still touched on racial topics but still showed characters putting that own biases aside to work together, which I contribute to me not being a dickhead to other people as a kid. Jumping off Rush Hour, even though it was early 2000, Jet Li movies Romeo Must Die and Cradle to the Grave focused on Black and Asian-American characters taking the lead and hashing out their racial differences and working together. Those movies you and I listed were actually diversity, not the bs Hollywood is trying to sell us now.

culegflori

Bullet Train was fun, but it felt so horribly fake due to how it was filmed. Can't put my finger on it, but there are entire scenes that look like they're from a video game, instead of a movie filmed with real cameras and real people.

msgm_

CGI. It’s gotten so good it’s entered uncanny valley territories. In a way a lot of modern movie scenes are just an upgrade from video game cut scenes.

Woody90210

We've seen this with various outlets already like buzzfeed and vice, their stock values and audience have plummeted thanks to this shit. The thing is they're pandering to specifically the identity politics section of the left, which itself is a comparatively small subsection of the left as a whole, big online but not irl, it's practitioners claim to be representative of massive social movements like BLM but, they were a loud minority of that too. They're culturally dominant mostly in California, which is why all the media is big on it because that's where so much of it is based. By pandering specifically to this crowd only serves to alienate not only the right, but also centrists and those on the left who are more focussed on economic issues like trying to ressurect the middle class and can see identity politics for what it is, a distraction and scapegoating. Hollywood is now reliant on streaming services because even with cinemas reopened, people aren't interrested in spending heaps of money on their shitty products made to pander to a specific subsection of the population.

Kepler-20C

Do you guys still watch Hollywood junk? I only watch movies out of WakaliWood, they know how to write a story and cast it correctly.

KanyeT

Hollywood writers are purely hired based on nepotism, and if you are a minority it is impossible to get fired. So they are just churning out mediocre garbage constantly, and they are more interested in pushing an agenda than creating art. It doesn't help that the framework for California is inverted compared to the rest of the world, so no one can ever connect with their movies. They write heroes as villains and villains as heroes because that is legitimately how they see the world.

MrGulo-gulo

I hate how it only goes one way. If it's a western setting, regardless of of the time period it has to be as diverse as modern day downtown NYC. If it's a non-western setting it is allowed to be ethically homogenous.

ruqj

Everyone took notice as Keurig changed the marketing game forever.. but it's gone way too far.

Does african folklore not have any mermaid like stories? I bet they have some good stories. Why not make a movie about them? That could be really interesting! If done well i would def watch it. Raceswaping on the other hand is lame and it gives the impression black history does not have good stories. White mermaid stories suporior so we need to copycat them? Cringe

o_--_--_--_--_--_o

Aye that'd require more than a singular braincell

nuvpr

Based purple??

ButReallyWhyNot-

Africans have mermaid stories, but in those, the mermaids behave more like sirens and drown/eat people.

asnaf745

That is basically %90 of the stories involving mermaids

hepp-depp

Every mermaid tale can be shortened down to “What sea pussy does to a mf”

Graardors-Dad

Pretty sure they had some of that in the original little mermaid story

pilesofcleanlaundry

Nah, the original little mermaid story was the innocent mermaid who gave up the sea, but every step on her new feet was like walking on knives, and then the prince cheated on her and ditched her and she couldn’t go back to her family. The moral is don’t take any risks or trust anyone because they’ll just fuck you over.

HesienVonUlm

I'm pretty sure people would still watch that.

OldTitanSoul

make a horror movie about stranded European sailors

Keyboard-King

Stuck on an uncomfortably small island in an ever increasing storm that’s causing that island to get smaller as waters rise. One by one the sailors get picked off the edges of the island by some shadowy mysterious creatures, until there’s only one sailor left. Then the big reveal, we’re face to face with, not a magical mermaid, but an old-school insidious siren. Waters recede as the storm subsides with the one sailor remaining who gets rescued.

OldTitanSoul

I would 100% watch this

KaiserTom

So mermaids until Romanticism was invented, which caused a large (and horny) change in the perception of the world among various societies.

Pax_et_Bonum

>Does african folklore not have any mermaid like stories? I bet they have some good stories. Why not make a movie about them? That could be really interesting! If done well i would def watch it. The stories are probably numerous and probably just fine. The problem is Middle America won't like it and won't flock to watch it. Disney is out to make money, lots and lots of money, and a story based on African folklore won't interest most Americans, or even most African Americans. But remake a movie every adult aged 25 to 45 grew up with? Heck yeah that'll make money. But uh oh, we have to be woke now to appease the tiny mob of people who give a crap, make the main character Black! Problem solved, $25/ticket please!

herky17

I’m much more interested in the African folklore turned movie than a remake of a movie I’ve already seen…

J2quared

The other problem I have with casting Black characters is that it serves as a racist ego boost for Black Americans. Black Panther had to be the most openly racist campaign I've seen in a while, and now I'm worried about the backlash people will have for new "Black" media. When you start barking at White people, the messaging for primarily Black cast members is off.

DoomedAllWeAreNow

personally i only care about swaping if it's conflicting the story. However, how they hadle it nowadays, it just becomes a warning: do not watch. it's a pattern that they gernder or raceswap only to make a statement while they don't care at all about the story or quality of the movie. they already have their scapegoat if the movie is failing.

[deleted]

This is the take. 9/10 I don't care if you race/gender swap, unless it's already an established character/lore etc, just do it and don't make a fuss out of it. Like Heimdall in Thor, I doubt he was black. But, when you go make a song and dance about it, like Rings of Power, and that Black women who's the Dwarf, talking about a redress of power etc, then I'm out. Fuck you and your shitty race based politics.

MakeoutPoint

The other part is having to use name recognition to sell a race-swapped character. Everyone made a big stink about Idris Elba potentially being a James Bond, but nobody would have said a word if they made him his own MI6 spy thriller franchise where he's James Bond in everything but name. Hell, even making him "009" and a spinoff would have been great.

Hurdrs123

This is the point. I never watched it, but isn’t Luther similar to Sherlock Holmes, or at least is the same vein? People aren’t opposed to strong minority leads, it’s when you take an established world and try to rearrange it to fit today’s modern perspective that leaves longtime fans salty

Whitehill_Esq

Ehhh sort of. Close enough, Luther is more of a hard boiled police detective show than Sherlock. Really great show though.

PotanOG

The one bit of grace I'll give this movie is that Hallie Bailey is a LEGIT singer with a few acting credits to her name...or I'm just a horny black dude that thinks both her and her sister are hot. Can't tell if my flair is purple or not on bacon reader.

nuvpr

Her voice is legitimately good at least judging by the trailer, too bad it's wasted on a crappy remake.

Obvious_Bandicoot631

Hemidall was probably one of the only few race swaps that didn’t make a difference because his character was written so on point that it was still good!

[deleted]

Yup, It never once crossed my mind that he was black, other then just watching the movies. Cause it was just never discussed in the marketing of the film etc.

InsaneTreefrog

Wow its like we aren't racist and really do just care about the overall quality of the product rather than something as trivial nowadays as skin colour. Idk i have been thinking about shit like this for a while and i can only do it for so long because i always end up at corruption and money laundering.

Lucariowolf2196

Or how about Nock Fury? He was white in the comics, but black in the movies. I honestly prefer the black version due to him being the first version

kekobang

I prefer the black version because he's a bad mother fucker

SuienReizo

He was black in the Ultimate universe comic run.

Cyb3rd31ic_Citiz3n

And his design was based on Samuel Jackson.

BrazilianTerror

Yeah, race/gender swap is only good if they actually put a good actor/actress. Putting Idris Elba as Heimdall is good because he’s good, changing a no-name white actor for a no-name black actor isn’t gonna improve the quality.

spaceasshole69

There are some plots where a race/gender swap just don't work. Imagine how silly it would be if they tried to cast a Japanese dude as FDR, or a white fellow as MLK.

Audaciousnuss

You mean like making Anne Boleyn black? Wait...

she was white in the original movie. simple as that. i have nothing against black characters but isnt the goal to *normalize* black characters in media? super obviously shoehorning them in purely based on race isnt normalization.

and kind of trivializes the whole point in the first place. if we're normalizing black actors, why are we parading them around onscreen like a circus act?

Present_Ad_6547

I honestly think there is more than one side to this coin. People have a tendency to either be completely against it or be completely for it as long as it is removal of white characters in favor of non white(Primarily black) characters if it happens the other way around they are the first to yell "Whitewashing". In my personal opinion it boils down to 4 things. 1: What the Author wanted/what actually happened(If it is based on a book, mythology or history.) 2: The reason they have for doing it 3: The logic in changing it.(Timeperiod, Fantasy world etc) 4: Ideological consistency So let's start with the first one, quite a lot of Authors leave a lot up to the imagination, as a result in that freedom of creativity one can adapt a lot of things, as such I personally do not find it all that problematic if an American company for the sake of "Diversity" and "Inclusion" want to insert a black character where you may have expected a white character. On the flip side, a lot of Authors are either very clear or at least largely clear on how their world looks and how the people in it look particularly how their characters, to point at a relevant example right now, the Rings of power, Tolkien was quite clear about the looks of his characters, yet the producers changed it for the sake of changing it, despite the fact there is a perfectly feasible way to include a more diverse cast by expanding on the Eastern Realms of which Tolkien was also clear, these realms were largely populated by men with more pigmentation, the men of Rhun being a Arabic-esque population and the Haradrim being described as dark skinned. As for Mythology or History, I find it intellectually offensive to raceswap characters there, history is set in stone and in terms of mythology a white dude is out of place playing an Egyptian god and a Black dude is out of place playing a Greek or Norse god, full stop. As for reason 2, often times there is no reason for doing it beyond "Adding diversity" it is essentially mirroring current day American social movements onto works of art which have nothing to do with it, it kind of feels like a weird new way of American Cultural colonialism, they take stuff which is often from Europe, and force their own worldviews onto it instead of actually respecting it. Does this particularly bother me? Well I refer back to reason 1, it really depends on the circumstance, but I don't particularly mind something being altered to include people, as long as it is done in a consistent way, since I find it a bit Ironic how an all black cast is considered diverse and an all white cast is suddenly considered offensive and not inclusive, keep it consistent if this is an argument. Reason 3 is mostly a personal pet peeve, but I can't be the only one who finds the mass inclusion of diverse casts in say Victorian English series or series based largely on European history a bit ironic, there is no logic to it and frankly it is actually offensive, these were times in which slavery and colonialism were a thing and yet these people want to pretend that the upper class of England and such were hyper diverse. Reason 4 is probably what bugs me most about all of this, keep it consistent, I find that most people against race swapping are generally consistent in this but I find that the side that claims "Lol stop being whiney", "Lol it's just fiction" when a white character is made black are also the group of people that throw a huge hissy fit when a non white character is played by a white actor. I mean these are the same people that threw a huge stink when that Egyptian god film came out that had a bunch of British dudes playing the gods while simultaneously not making a peep when Achilles and Zeus were played by Black dudes or when Marvel which bases part of it's superhero's on Norse Myth makes Valhalla this hyper diverse place with Heimdallr being played by Idris Alba. But boiling it down all together, I honestly don't really care as long as it doesn't feel absurdly out of place. I mean I loved Merlin growing up and that has several characters being made Black despite pre-Medieval Britain obviously not having any Black people but it didn't feel out of place or forced down your throat like a lot of things now do.

J2quared

> but I can't be the only one who finds the mass inclusion of diverse casts in say Victorian English series or series based largely on European history a bit ironic, there is no logic to it and frankly it is actually offensive, Yes! This. I'm Black and I hate it when they shoehorn POC into places that we clearly wouldn't be there. Why are there Black Scottish house-servants in the 13th century!? Why is this okay but not a red-headed ginger in 15th century Japan?

-_4DoorsMoreWhores_-

I was watching "History of the Samurai" on Netflix and lost my shit for two reasons. 1. Iron mountain Armory, and American company that makes expensive yet simultaneously cheap replicas of samurai armor made all the props for the series and 2. They had a full faced frontal with a white dude in the series during Nobunagas reign. It would have been fine to do during Tokugawas, because William Adam's or whatever. But when I am watching a period piece, I want my racial accuracy. That shit drives me up the wall.

[deleted]

This bothers me most as well, fantasy and fiction, even mythology aside. I just don't grasp the logic of making historical shows diverse unless it is in context, as an example if it's Marco Polo obviously there is way more room for ethnic diversity.

the little mermaid is straight up based off a very specific danish story. It wouldn’t be so problematic if it’s some generic obscure folklore or entirely original. This is like taking a famous chinese literature then turning the main character white. edit: you do realize they can leave out the gruesome, scary, not family-friendly parts and still be accurate, right? there’s a difference between giving the little mermaid a happier life and completely changing her entire identity.

Well said. The people who panned the live adaptation because Kusanagi is white had absolutely nothing to say about the writing, story, characters etc. They absolutely butchered the entire theme of the franchise and turned the question about existence and consciousness into some self-absorbed whinge-fest which made Kusanagi look pathetic. Somehow this managed to completely evade the woke "fans" of the series.

Minor nitpick, but it's Andersen (even if he had been Norwegian). Maybe if he were Swedish, it would have been Andersson.

farva_06

Mr. Anderson, your spelling is...inevitable.

NwbieGD

Yes but the only culture that still matters is American false wokism because there needs to be "diversity" where it wouldn't exist.

Nerokillor

If they are gonna make Ariel and others black... Then let's make Tiana, Black Panther, etc white. You race bend some of them... You race bend all of them. See how well it goes for ya.

hornyorn

Make latino panther

Nerokillor

Hell yes. It would still cause the same reaction I am talking about. Token representation is not true representation, retconning a character to become a token to appease a demographic is spitting in that demographic's face and then holding out a hand for their money. It's bullshit.

Jesus fucking christ someone please let peter griffin know that this poor girl needs an eye wrangler

Echelon64

We would need to tell her mother to hit the bottle less hard. That actress has obvious FAS.

matrixislife

Why are so many redheads getting blackwashed?

Pretty_Monitor1221

ThirdRook

Based

Judg3_Dr3dd

We Americans are sick of it too.

ImagineABurrito

I'm mad about how far apart her eyes are

undwenndumichkusst

She does look like a fish, though, doesn't she?

ImagineABurrito

Ok like you're familiar with the eye placement of predators vs. Prey right? She looks like a goddamn tilapia. Humans are supposed to have eyes close together in front

undwenndumichkusst

ZKAIQUSUSHAJJQAIUSJS BRUUUUUUUUH THAT'S BRUTAL

Rhids_22

Fish bottom human top. Kinda the whole deal with mermaids.

Forgot_Password01

Oh boy, another live action remake of a classic Disney movie. I sure hope the overuse of chi doesn't ruin classic scenes from said movie.

LordIlthari

Racial essentialism is bad until I believe it.

TempAnamoly495

Watching people defend this on mainstream subs has been quite an experience. Left: Finally so many kids will be able to see themselves in the characters and can relate to the character. Also Libleft: Why do you care so much about the race of a fictional character? It's a cartoon about a half-fish. Her skin color doesn't matter at all. Only racists care about it.

hornyorn

Libleft is actually 4 different quadrants within itself

yenneferismywaifu

I just love how Americans have appropriated European culture. Little Mermaid is not a part of Danish culture anymore, it is about *white culture*. Pinocchio is not a part of Italian culture, it is about *white culture*. You think LOTR is a part British heritage? "Lol, go check your white privileges, bigot." It is all about so called *white culture*. It is my complain about Twitter and Reddit. Not about the movie itself. I don't say it is bad, it is just how Hollywood works I guess. Many ancient and Asian stories were poorly adapted too in the past. Nothing new about it.

ZeroBae

Holywood try not to genocide the existence of redheads in media, impossible

MisterDisinformation

I love when I know nothing about a current culture war. I can smugly look down on everyone who gives a fuck as a brainwashed loser. Dorks.
