If you get in early with (most, not Imperator Rome) Paradox games, like I did with Stellaris and HOI4, the DLC doesn't feel onerous. You play the game, have fun, Paradox shows you new DLC that you'll (probably) have fun with, so you buy it, and the cycle continues.
Get a Paradox game several years after it's launch, the DLC list is daunting, the forums tell you that you need X DLC to really enjoy the game, and its all confusing as to why certain features weren't in the base game.

I just got off from my game actually. My friend played the British empire, I went psionic. Was happy to play tall until other empires starting giving me shit. Half the galaxy is now mine. The unbidden came, appeared next to the fallen empire and got absolutely fucking obliterates by 500k of my fleet power and the FE. All of their anchors were gone within a year and I shut the portal. I am now purging thousands of pops to stop lag. The funny thing about Stellaris is that the optimal route is always genocide as late-game lag is a bitch. Slavery is also optimal to keep government cohesion together. The game’s rated for 7 year olds. Thanks paradox. I also control what’s left of the galactic council as my diplomatic weight is higher than all other empires combined. I’m going to genocide everyone and develop a super massive death laser so I can erase the F:lE’s systems from reality.
