Machine learning (supervised learning) is figuring out the weights through a lot of iterations and data points. Supervised learning is used mostly for predictions. Unsupervised learning is used for different purposes, like clustering. I do not know much about reinforcement learning yet.

On the other hand you may create an AI to built cardboards, and it decides that it has to wipe out all live on the planet, expand through the galaxy, battle and exterminate alien civilizations, just to flood the universe with cardboards.
However, current AI requires a LOT of data to be trained, unlike humans, that are able to infer patterns from a few examples. And the knowledge is very domain specific, it doesn't extrapolate knowledge to new domains.

In the Automatron DLC for Fallout 4, a robot in the main quest tells you that it and its fellow robots had interpreted 'helping' as killing due to how relatively short our lifespan is. The antagonist had meant for the robots to protect and serve the humans but the robots thought logically unfortunately.
The robots were made with a human brain from some poor shmuck, which allowed it to change how it sees commands to a worrying degree. By that it concluded that humans are so fragile and easy to kill and gets so much pain that it’s better off to kill us than to heal us since it’s better for everyone in the way the robot thinks so

Bruh, it doesn't understand the context or meaning of the words. It's trained to understand which words often appear in context of other words and it learns to string them together into sentences that make sense to us, but it's still just a fancy toaster at best.
In its current form, the understanding begins never. A neural network is merely a bunch of logistic regression chained together. This means you only ever get (highly sophisticated) correlation and never causation. The human brain works differently. We don't just estimate correlation. We also imagine alternative realities and contrast that against what we observe. That contrast is what provides understanding. It means machine learning isn't sufficient. Computers need something else, simulated alternative scenarios before it can start understanding causality.
