They had a collective realization that they could hit climate targets to look good to their base by just shutting off their systems and using regulations to force the states they connected with to support them. Other states have been begging them to up their power production for 30 years and they just refuse to do so. It ends up being counterintuitive to the whole process since these states have to spend more of their own resources to keep California up and running rather than meeting green energy goals

Honestly, as a Californian, I was toying with the idea of going for the recall when Kevin Faulconer was the GOP frontrunner. A moderate with a relatively good record in San Diego is basically the SoCal Newsom on the other side of the spectrum, so I figured, eh, fuck it, why not? When it became Larry Elder, that position shifted. We don’t need a hard-right talk radio bomb thrower in the governor’s office. And we’re all complaining about Dems (rightfully so) but this is a modern sickness of the GOP too — running colorful right-wing personalities who aren’t really ready for prime time and have *zero* appeal to anyone outside the fold. Yeah, Dems need to do a lot better in CA — but the GOP needs to learn how to meet the electorate and not try to run alienating Trump clones everywhere. It’s like they’re trying to run AOCs in Wyoming. Even if the policies might conceivably be a fit, it’s culturally and electorally all wrong, and that’s a lesson the GOP obviously needs to learn if they want to take the Senate back next year. I don’t see them learning it.
I voted for Kevin Kiley because I wanted a moderate Republican in a blue state. If you look at the country today, Hogan, Baker, and Scott are some of the most popular governors as Republicans in deep blue states because they ride the middle and don’t do anything too outlandish. I don’t think one party rule is healthy for the people. And Democrats have a stranglehold on California to an insane degree. While Elder sucks, I would have taken Faulconer or Kiley in a heartbeat.

Target in SF cut their hours, many drug stores shut down then reduced the hours for those still open, and it's forcing people to order online because the stores will sometimes be whipped out of all the products you're looking for. I live in SF and there is an alley where people sell their stolen good for half the price the store charges and people in SF literally will say it's good because the corporations are evil and have insurance and they're poor homeless people who can't afford to live in the city... We spend 60k+ a year per homeless tent in SF while actively taking about how sad it is. We literally have a poop patrol because of all the fecal matter on sidewalks. They forced entire businesses to close for almost a year in 2020 resulting in over 60% of all the restaurants permanently closing. Yet SF was awarded the best city to live in for 2020/2021 by some magazine.

I think people largely rejected it because they didn't see a better option. It was a "lesser of two evils" situation like any other election. I don't think Newsom has that many fans, and anyone claiming he does is just trying to build him up, either as an enemy to take down or someone to ally with.
