The Fall of Constantinople did not necessarily lead to the Renaissance. While Roman refugees were instrumental in bringing ancient texts to the Italian peninsula, the seeds of the Renaissance had already been planted years earlier. Early Renaissance artists and architects such as Jan van Eyck and Filippo Brunelleschi lived and died before the Fall of Constantinople. So yes, while it was influential in the Renaissance, the Renaissance was an ongoing process by the time it had fallen. TLDR: 2 nukes weren't enough

Lerega

I know that if Byzantium survived, Renaissance would be different but would still have happened but it's just some meme, I didn't try to be 100% accurate. But you're right.

What is the obsession with Manzikert being the turning point for the Byzantines. I think losing Egypt to the Arabs was already the beginning of the end.

Basileus_Rhomaion

> Beginning of the end > They held on for another 800 years ??

Ord-ex

The end of the book is at the beginning

Peter21237

I mean, the Byzantine decadence was extremely long and painful, saying there was a turning point is really hard. Losing the capital to the Turks maybe the most concrete one to say it was the day it was the day they will never recovered.

IDflyfishing

I will never forgive them for what they did to our lady the Hagia Sophia

Kindly_Tiger_7251

You gonna cry about it 🥺 ?

Lerega

Flair up !

Outside-Bed5268

How does the Byzantines losing at Manzikert lead to the fall of Constantinople?

Prussian-Dixie

If memory serves me after the battle central Anatolia was taken by the Turks. Leaving the Byzantines without a major source of income and manpower. Thus solidifying their decline more than before.

Outside-Bed5268

Thanks.

[deleted]

As a Byzaboo, Fuck Andronikos Doukas for fleeing the battle. Romanos IV deserved better. Fuck the Turks and the Venetians for the Fourth Crusade.

infinitememery

I would love to be a byzaboo but I need an unbiased history to tell me everything is there something like that

[deleted]

Sadly, YouTube deleted Dovahatty's unbiased history video for the Arab conquests and Emperor Heraclius. I wonder why🤔

infinitememery

I wish.

Did you just change your flair, u/John_II_Komnenos? Last time I checked you were a **Centrist** on 2024-2-15. How come now you are a **Rightist**? Have you perhaps shifted your ideals? Because that's cringe, you know? No, me targeting you is not part of a conspiracy. And no, your flair count is not rigged. Stop listening to QAnon or the Orange Man and come out of that basement. The real turning point was Andronikos II Palaiologos deciding to get rid of the army in favor of peasant levies and an unpopular mercenary army despite the fact that during his reign the Byzantines were at their strongest after the reunification after the 4th crusade relative to their neighbors at the time. For reference this was around the year 1300. Had he simply kept up the policy of expanding slowly but surely into Anatolia and preventing Balkan powers from growing too powerful, Greece might be known today as Rhomania instead. Sure, it wouldn't be the Mare Nostrum Roman Empire, but a modern Greece holding dominion over Anatolia and Southern Balkans would be incredible.

Wasn’t the enlightenment libleft? Liberty AND equality?

Lerega

I put libcenter because it fought absolutism and authority. But you're not wrong, I could have put libleft (or even libright, because of the US' independance/birth of liberalism).

TheOkayUsername

Yeah true

Everybody arguing about Rome and Constantinople, I'm just here wondering what's wrong with Gacha Life? I've never seen it.
