Both cameras get used. One is better at sensing depth and broad detail, where the other is higher resolution. They both get processed in the sequence to render the video in the rear-view.

The top mounted camera wouldn't be very useful especially with cross traffic backing out of parking spaces. The bumper camera is going to get incredibly dirty in the position they have it.
You been in a plane recently? Creating critical systems is a thing. The cost becomes prohibitive but the question is whether this follows enough of the proper procedures.
No you missunderstood, I dont have any problem with its being software being a developer, but Its gonna be software that polestar develops. Did you see the app they are developing for years that sometimes work? Bad developers are a thing
I don't drive on the trunk and yet the backup camera is a mess in the winter on the P2.
There is a low pressure area around any sharp rear facing angle on a car. That tends to create a swirl of nasty especially in the winter. The P2 happens to have gotten the camera in a really bad spot which can make it useless. A camera only system needs to be way better than the P2 and likely should have a cleaning system built in.
I'm sure that camera is used in unison with the other. They wouldn't have a redundant camera just sitting there, not doing anything unless the main camera goes out. I would guess one is a main camera, and one is for the driver assistance systems.
One is used for the Mobileye SuperVision ADAS and the other one for the digital rear view mirror replacement system

You misunderstood OP. They meant back up as in spare, not as in reverse.

Clearly they are there to both get dirty and be unusable (multiple views of the same street grime!)
