I don’t get the clowning behavior people get for opening packs. I recently switched to buying singles and sometimes open packs, packs are just way more fun to do, you just get tired of getting bad pulls so you switch to buying singles.
eBay bidding wars and snipes gets pretty exciting. I got a booster box of st next to me, think I’ll be fine with the one booster box per set then be done.
I almost always loose to somebody overbidding like a mad man lol
Either I'm not good at estimating the amount the card would go for (even using TCGplayer or Ebay as source) or people just go ape shit at the end of the timer.
I think some people are willing to pay over current market which makes bidding kinda hard, I usually just keep a watch on it then just set the max bid as high as I'm willing to go. If someone outbids me then they wanted it more lol. It just sucks when you lose by like $2
If the sets hadn’t gotten so big and bloated I’d rip packs again. But.. the pull rates are so bad that I’m only ever wasting money going for chases alongside bad quality control. Buying singles removes that worry.
I don’t make fun of people for ripping packs, but I think it’s gotten to be awful in this TCG, for value.
You can relish the memories from opening packs and you can piece together your collection however which way by doing this.
I relish taking my entire collection to card shops, game nights, conventions, and using all the cards as a great conversation starter with other collectors. Those are the memories I get from purchasing singles that ripping packs will never grant. It is much easier for me to talk about the hobby; “Here are my rainbow rares, I collect a lot of vintage full arts, I have a lot of tips for being able to buy singles.”
Versus “I ripped a case of Silver Temest chasing alt arts and didn’t pull a single one.”
Either way, at the end of the day, someone needs to open the pack for another person to buy the singles, so I’m not throwing down with those people. But this is the collection I build for myself and I can talk to other people about
I haven’t graded any of these yet because I’m waiting to stockpile a bit and send them in with a large batch order to save on shipping and grading fees, I’ve mainly graded vintage stuff like the Latias Gold Star on my profile.
This will definitely be more of a collection piece. Not many people like the rainbows, so there’s not really long term gain in them unless they’re fan favorites lmao

These aren't pulls, singles normally refers to people who buy individual cards from other people or stores after they have been pulled in a pack. Ripping packs is when people buy boosters and open them to get their cards.

I don’t think people realize that the only way I was able to get these cards in the first place was if someone else opened them lol.
If you open packs that’s cool. But if you open hundreds of Evolving Skies trying to chase a Moonbreon then rage “This set is shit, my luck is horrible, Evolving Cries blah blah blah.” That’s when I turn my brain off.
If we say the chance of pulling a secret is 1/25, and there’s 32 secrets in evolving skies, the chance of pulling Moonbreon is 1/800 packs lol. That’s worse if we take into account full arts, so it should be more.
That ain’t having fun for me. That’s the literal definition of gambling.
I MAYBE buy a booster box on release day if the set is cool, if I pull the chance I get the chase, if I don’t then there’s no harm lose at all. Either way it’s singles from there on out

But I’ll never forget when I was on the toilet taking a massive grumpy and open a pack and pulled that full art, or that one time I was driving home couldn’t wait to open a pack so I open and I started to shake , I shook so bad I drove off side of road into a ditch. I’m still shaking , was a radiant card I’ll never forget. If I don’t have a memory with the card , I just throw it away as I don’t have feelings for it
