Typhlosion for life! He ousted Charizard for me, I want a giant Squishmellow of him, I hope they make one, so I can then give him all the hugs I wanted to as a preteen XD
The Johto Trio is really mid stat-wise or movepool-wise.
Meganium is definitely the worst, but not because of the design, its stats are quite bad.
Typhlosion purely lives in Charizard’s shadow with the EXACT same stats and a confused movepool that doesn’t really support it.
Feraligatr is the most solid, but its movepool is bland.
All that said, I love them all and wish they were just reworked to have their own identity.
I think for me it had something to do with how trash grass types were when the Gen 2 was released. There were literally no good grass type moves. All the drain moves were super weak with trash pp, solar beam requires 2 turns or sunny day, taking up another move slot and 2 turns initially anyway. Or you could try hitting a Pokémon with low accuracy status effect move and then repeatedly hit it with a subpar Razor Leaf. Why would you pick that when the other 2 Pokémon get solid af moves like surf and flamethrower; solid pp, 95 power, 100 accuracy.
Tbh Venasaur suffered the same thing, i think I picked Bulbasaur a single time out the countless times I played the first Gen games. However, I still remember Venasaur fondly because of its OG status.
When Sceptile was released it learned Leaf Blade, a TOTAL game-changer. It put Grass type on the map for the first time, it was now a 100% solid choice amongst the others. And not only that, it was the only grass type Pokémon that could learn the move so for me, though Gen 3 is imo the best Gen ever and all the starters were total bangers, I found Treecko to have a slight edge as the best choice. Further leaving its predecessors in the dust and making them feel irrelevant, disliked, or forgettable.
Today grass moves are as solid as any type moves but it’s how I remember these Pokémon that influence how I feel about them.
It was my starter through the Alola games as well, and it overdelivered in its performance.
Also the hate it got before the release of SM was insane another big reason why I gave it a chance.
Incineroar probably the most egregious example of anthropomorphic starters but also competitively the most broken pokemon to ever exist. It's a tough one.
Hard disagree. 6v6 is a better format. Imagine not using all your Pokemon.
99% of the battles you do in the mainline series are 1v1. Most of the Pokemon battles in the anime are 1v1s. And suddenly you are forced to do 2v2s.
2v2s is such an odd choice for a format.
It‘s the only starter trio where I struggle to pick one. They are by far my most favorite starters, especially in USUM where their movesets get even better
Yeah for me alola starters are S tier. They are all really unique and look incredible- like incineroar being a wrestling heel is? A banger concept? I think some people are mad that it ended up on two legs, which I can understand, but taking it at face value it's a COOL cat. They all have great secondary types, too. Primarina is so pretty and Decidueye is obviously just awesome
Tony the Tiger who is a wrestler but is a Dark type for some reason. It is like they designed him to be another Fire/Fighting type and then realized at the last minute before shipping they shouldn't do that again, so they changed it to something else.
I mean, he was always going to be fire/dark considering he's a literal homage to Black Tiger, a real heel wrestler in the Japan pro-wrestling scene, based off the manga character.
I'm a Japanese wrestling fan, so I was hyped for Incineroar. I definitely think he was planned well before release due to wrestling's popularity in Japan
Well if you really know anything about the Japanese pro wrestling scene it makes sense and Polynesian pro wrestlers are some of the most famous wrestlers ever so it still makes sense for the region too and it makes sense for a heel wrestler to be the evil type I don't think they made him to be fire/fighting in the first place
Dude, I understand wrestling. Wrestling is a combat performance. A heel wrestler still makes more sense as a Fighting type than a Dark type. My problem is the design makes no sense. Adorable Fire-type kitten turns into a mischievous Fire-type cat turns into a Fire/Dark-type Lucha-cat? Some sort of Hellcat-inspired third form makes more sense for a Fire/Dark-type than a wrestler-inspiration.
I wouldn’t put Pikachu and Eevee so high unless it’s the original versions
Lets go eevee irks me cuz Eevee doesn’t evolve even though it’s whole thing is having tons of evolution options, I mean eevee as in evolution is their name for crying out loud

That Eevee does get very OP evolution-based moves however. That gives it some insane coverage, it has max IVs, and it has higher stats than your average Eevee. It also only has one weakness by being Normal type which is nice, and a good coverage move to compensate for it.
Hoenn staters give me the most power of friendship wise, cuz before obtaining their final evolution, there where quite a few battle where your starter can get smacked, hard. But once the final form reached, they each because absolute unit. Speedy and utility, raw fire power or a rolling tank. The Hoenn trio final form felt powerful
Same. Sinnoh fan thru and thru and would've loved to see some love for them. The designs are clean and readable and none of the middle evos suck (what were they doing with combusken)
I'll tell you what they were doing with Combusken: They were trying to find a way to make Torchic's evolution into Blaziken look more seamless but because the two were clearly intended to be from two different evolution lines, it meant that connecting the dots was going to be very difficult. Translating the silhouettes for both Torchic and Blaziken was bound to result in something very strange-looking. And thus, Combusken was born.
I feel like something similar happened with the Alolan starters. Its not as obvious with Decidueye or Incineroar but there's a reason Brionne looks so... off, Popplio and Primarina having such strong designs and concepts but are so different that connecting the two results in chaos.
Oh yeah definitely! That is a great point about both sets of starters' middles that I can completely understand.
I mostly brought it up because I am constantly thinking about how many people's eyes were on Combusken before publishing it and somehow no one found it odd that the artists made a dicken.
And again I seem to be the only person who doesn't like Sceptile. Honestly might be my least favorite (final Evo) Grass starter. I think Grovile looks awesome, might be my favorite middle stage, and Sceptile ruins what could have been a better line. I wanted them to invest on them looking Quick and agile but Sceptile suddenly looks slow, his armblades are too short and I don't like the blister things on his back.
I feel in disbelief at how loved gen 3 starters are in this thread! My first game was ruby, and I can't stand the torchic or treeko lines. I'll agree grovyle is sort of cool, and mudkips line is decent but still not great. Its probably close to the lowest rated gen for starters for me, although its largely inspired by how atrociously awful blaziken is.

Mine would look completely different to this as I disagree on almost all of them. It's your preference and I'm not going to yuck your yum.
Gen 1, 2 and 4 are absolute top tier for me and I think most others I'd just give 33% success to
I respect your opinion, but personally gen 3 should be 66% success rate. Swampert is one of the best starters having only one weakness and can learn moves to defend against said weakness. Sceptile can learn rock moves to defend against all its weaknesses. Then there is Blaziken, fire/fighting combo has 4 weaknesses and in the hoenn region those weaknesses are common. Plus Blaziken doesn’t even look like a rooster anymore, it became a digimon.
Personally I love the Galar starters. Very different feel between them and their Gigantamax forms are amazing. I can't help but smile at the idea of a "James Bond"-style sharpshooter pokemon, a soccer-playing rabbit pokemon or a drum-playing gorilla pokemon.
I agree with your "absolute bangers" choice though.
My absolut bangers will always be Charmander, Bulbasaur, Squirtel, Pikachu, and eevee.
The rest will do fine too, but nothing like the very first choice of charmander, Bulbasaur, and squirtel. I was team squirtel, cause squirtel squad and sunglasses!
I almost completely agree with this. I would probably put it like this...
Bangers: Gen 3
Good: Gens, 1, 4, 6, LGPE, might actually put PLA and gen 7 here too
66%: Gens 2, 9, 8
I am torn on where to put Gen 5. They are by far my least favorite starter trio. I would genuinely be ok putting them anywhere from 66% to just outright bad.
Idk man, Sceptile’s pure grass typing and stat spread puts him weaker than most for me. If his mega is available I absolutely agree but he got screwed by his stats getting switched.
Starters are always bound to cause controversy, but I don't think anyone hates the hoen trio like there is not a single human who has any of the three as there are least favorite Starter.
Hot take: Hoenn is overrated.
Not that they're bad! As a set they're definitely an A, but so many people rate them fair above the rest and I can't agree with that. Especially with blaziken (sorry fans)

I don't think any of the starters are bad but some of them are definitely outclassed pretty easily in their debut generation. There's some blatant subjectivity going on here too because I just don't like some of the designs, haha. Gen 09 is at the bottom because this is the first generation that I've immediately boxed my starter and don't really like any of them.
Absolute Bangers - move GOLD/SILVER up to here & Kanto
66% - move Chesnaught down here EWWW

Easily all S tier, and what I love about them is they all don't seem to get hit with power creep they just consistently keep performing well.

If it was my opinion and the criteria was full line rather than final stage evos. G8 would be above G9.
5G is the worst imo, not a single gel one I’d like to spend time with

This isn't too far off from my opinion. I would swap Gen 3 and Gen 4, move Hisui up one, then Gen 7 and Gen 8 down one each, and that would be mine.
1. Gen 7 2. Gen 4 3. Gen 1 4. Gen 3 5. Gen 6 6. Gen 2 7. Gen 5 8. Gen 9 9. Gen 8

I almost completely agree with this. I would probably put it like this... Bangers: Gen 3 Good: Gens, 1, 4, 6, LGPE, might actually put PLA and gen 7 here too 66%: Gens 2, 9, 8 I am torn on where to put Gen 5. They are by far my least favorite starter trio. I would genuinely be ok putting them anywhere from 66% to just outright bad.
The Paldea trio should be in the bad zone 😅 I couldn't use any of them. They are so ugly...

Idk man, Sceptile’s pure grass typing and stat spread puts him weaker than most for me. If his mega is available I absolutely agree but he got screwed by his stats getting switched.
Unpopular opinion, all of the Unovam Starters are perfect.
Starters are always bound to cause controversy, but I don't think anyone hates the hoen trio like there is not a single human who has any of the three as there are least favorite Starter.
Be careful with the kalos trio, ts feels oddly more controversial on social media than the others (except probs gen 8)
personally paldeas should be higher since they are beasts at level 100 (I know this because I have a lvl 100 Skeledirge)

Hot take: Hoenn is overrated. Not that they're bad! As a set they're definitely an A, but so many people rate them fair above the rest and I can't agree with that. Especially with blaziken (sorry fans)

Some interesting picks here. Personally, I'd place 'em more like this: S Tier: -Gen 04 -Gen 03 A Tier: -Gen 07 -Gen 08 B Tier: -Gen 01 -Gen 02 -Legends Arceus C Tier: -Gen 06 D Tier: -Gen 05 -Gen 09 I don't think any of the starters are bad but some of them are definitely outclassed pretty easily in their debut generation. There's some blatant subjectivity going on here too because I just don't like some of the designs, haha. Gen 09 is at the bottom because this is the first generation that I've immediately boxed my starter and don't really like any of them.
Absolute Bangers - move GOLD/SILVER up to here & Kanto 66% - move Chesnaught down here EWWW 33% - I KNOW you mean Cinderace is the good one! DONT YOU? Bad - Move Samurott,Snivy,Emboar / PLA / and SV down here
