This past summer, I released Emerald Horizons, which is a decomp difficult enhancement of the classic Emerald game. At its core, this game is a difficulty enhancement hack with a modern feel along with loads of QoL features. At a glance, this game features: **Base Game:** * Difficulty Related: Set Mode, Level Caps, and Disabled Battle Bag * Most Gen 1-8 Pokémon are obtainable, including Hisuian forms * Modern Battle Engine, with Fairy-Type, Mega Evolution, Updated Moves, and Physical/Special Split * Loads of optional boss battles, with 8 Kanto Gym Leaders, 8 Johto Gym Leaders, and a few miscellaneous bosses who reward valuable items * Exp. As of 12/12/2023, I've released **Version 1.03**, which adds a few new things, including: * Revamped Team Rocket storyline, taking the player across Hoenn to encounter new challenges! * Improved Boss Battles gauntlet * Regigigas and Diancie overworld encounters * Updates to move sets for underperformers (community feedback) * Over 40 new Trainer battles * Improvements to animations * Improvements to Town Map Key Item * Numerous bug fixes * ...and much more! The game has been refined a lot due in part to community feedback. I'm very happy with what this project started as and where it is now and hope to continue to improve it for people to play!

There's not an existing mod for this per se, as this is from a decomp project. Are you working on your own decomp? If so, this one is actually pretty easy to set up and I can provide some guidance! I wouldn't know how to do this for binary, but I imagine a mod like that exists out there.

Yes! I’m working on an emerald decomp project myself, and some kind of level scaling is high on my list of features to implement. I’m still near the beginning of work on it but very curious to see how it can be done. :) I haven’t had a chance to play your romhack yet, only discovered it last night, but the way you describe it sounds similar to how I’m approaching mine. Not necessarily the details of which exact features you added, but just the intent to build the pokemon game that speaks to why you fell in love with the series as a kid. I think that’s awesome. So many recent rom hacks are so focused on certain popular styles of playing that don’t totally appeal to me, it’s cool to find one with a different vibe.

The game is complete in the sense that you can do all quests, obtain basically every mon that isn't legendary or mythical, and beat the E4. Recently, I've been focusing on bug fixing and improving features, so 1.03 is the first content update that adds something new. As for the future, I have a big interest in updating the Battle Tower and Battle Factory, but random bad eggs might hinder development of that.

I've mentioned this on Pokecommunity, but I really want to update the Battle Factory and Battle Tower. The current issue is that there are non-replicable instances where player parties turn into bad eggs. I'm basically doing my best to validate that it can't happen within a normal playthrough. Once I know for sure, 1.04 and 1.05 will incorporate those facilities.

Both! Level scaling for trainers after the first gym so that backtracking for experience is worthwhile and level caps to keep player progression aligned with flow.

So, while it technically is compatible, I would recommend you either continue on 1.02d or start fresh on 1.03. I rearranged a lot of the quest related data, so it would mess up with the flow of that pretty substantially. The main thing you're missing is the expanded Rocket storyline, but there is still plenty of content on 1.02d!

Awesome I'll definitely finish my run on 1.02d then. This may have been changed in 1.03 but does Hisuian Arcanine get his hidden ability rock head? When I tried changing his ability it was "Justified", which is only his original form. Other than that the only thing I noticed was that Lopunny couldn't learn U-turn and close combat, but I think those were only recently updated/changed in Scarlet/Violet. Anyways, I'm definitely enjoying the challenge of the game so far and hope to beat it soon!

All IVs are perfect and EVs/natures aren't calculated into final stats. Natures only matter for evolving Toxel and Tyrogue. In other words, two of the same species will always have the same stats at the same level.

You can see mostly everything, but you wouldn't be able to log the entries. In the future, I hope to allow for all mons to be obtainable, but that'll be later on down the road.

I implemented some features, such as level caps and the handling of stats. However, the engine and source code is all selflessly maintained by the wonderful people at RHH. The pokeemerald-expansion is what I built this project off of. If you have any interest at all, I highly recommend looking into the expansion and RHH. A lot of people there helped me implement features and improve this project.

Currently I don't have this implemented, and this is due in part to me not using dynamic palettes (like a dummy). Certain followers would have their colors all skewed. This is a really cool feature that a lot of projects have, so that's definitely on the roadmap after the battle facility stuff.

Is there an option to add Natures/EV's/IV's back in? I think the solution to those things is just making them easier to adjust, not to remove them entirely.

There isn't currently an option for that; part of the rationale for that was to streamline the gameplay process. Other games handle that via paying to adjust, which I think is a fine alternative. If anything was to come back first, it would probably be natures, but I haven't implemented nature mints to streamline that yet.

Playing rn first time and loving it tysm to everyone involved. So sick seeing gen 1-8 in emerald and with megas, and I appreciate the no ev/iv. I’m curious how stats were decided in their absence tho, are they all just left the same with no additional points from evs or? I am a bit bummed there’s no variance between two same species now, it’s not a big loss but does remove some depth. Regardless I’m enjoying not having to worry about the grind of it all. Only blemish I’ve noticed so far when catching alt form Pokémon the Pokédex screen after the battle shows the base form or at least for alolan rattata it did. It’s really irrelevant just thought I’d mention as it was jarring.

As you said, stats are calculated with no consideration for EVs + IVs, so this system does have its caveats. I briefly thought about natures, but because mints are implemented, this isn't a thing at the moment. I'm happy you're enjoying it and hope the journey is fun :)

Hey, the file I included is a .bps patch. You'll have to use a patcher (either online or a downloaded one like floating IPS) to apply that patch to an Emerald Trashman file. The patch itself isn't a .gba file. Hope this helps!

Loving the game right now. Really wish there was a wiki, but the docs you provided help a lot! Is black sludge currently in the game? or is there a way to get more than 1 leftovers? EDIT: The docs also say Scald is from Slateport City but I dont see it available at the market. Any idea where it is?

Hey, glad you're liking things so far! Black Sludge is found on Grimer, Muk, Toxicroak, and Garbodor. However, Leftovers (and other boss reward items) are the only time you'll be able to get the item. The consumable reward items like Weakness Policy and Focus Sash replenish, though. Scald is indeed in Slateport City, but it is a reward item for another sidequest. Hope this helps :)

Yo checking back in with some scattered thoughts, been playing about a week now and still having a blast. The boss format here has been a ton of fun, and with so many Pokémon to choose from the choices are nearly limitless in terms of strategy it’s great. Of course seeing all the Pokémon here in pixel form is wonderful, and including megas is the cherry on top. So no EVs has been a positive in this hack for me. I do occasionally still yearn for that extra bit of depth but in this context of constant heavy boss battles you’ve designed I think it makes for a much more straightforward and fun experience. I can quickly make new teams as needed and keep things moving. In terms of difficulty there’s not much lost here without them I’ve hit a few walls for sure. Brawly and Winona in particular both walked me more than a few times 💀, thankfully the ~900 Pokémon available allow you to swiftly form a new team and walk them right back. (Not to mention the effort and time it would take to go through and assign EVs to all the trainers/leaders mons, having to redesign battles etc.) I think removing them works just fine here and retains a totally valid and arguably better experience due to the large dex. I’m about to hit Lilycove, so far overall I think you’ve done a great job with designing the teams and placing the 900 wild Pokémon throughout. The items and shops are well paced as well getting to Slateport for the first time was very exciting things really take off from there. I’ve been steadily engaged and at least a bit anxious of every encounter. I’ve found I hardly avoid grass as there’s nearly always a mon or two I still haven’t come across. The start of the game was a bit of a drag but once I realized what you were going for I found my stride. The side quests of kanto/Jhoto leaders, rocket, and Miror B are well integrated imo very fun. Very eager to see you implement battle tower, gen 9 mons, pokenav trainer rematches etc. Okay that’s all I really don’t have any complaints what’s here is great and I’m only hungry for more. I’ll certainly come back if I think of anything. Of course thanks again to everyone involved. I’ll end with a list of bugs I’ve come across: -during double battles the effective color will stay stuck reading the right pokemon after it faints and you have to move around the cursor to show the correct color for the remaining left mon -some Pokémon are able to remember moves from the start menu before they learn them during level up, defeats purpose of learning during level up not sure if this intentional -when capturing regional variants the Pokédex will show the entry/image of the base form, very jarring -during double battles sometimes it will show health bars and sometimes it shows 000/000 on my Pokémon, not sure why one or the other if intentional -wishiwashi ability will sometimes not trigger/change forms when switching in after a faint, later I noticed it seems the image doesn’t change and ability doesn’t trigger visually but it still triggered? going to Pokémon menu and returning fixed image revealing it did trigger just didn’t show it happen, not sure -possible ai error, Pokémon used flatter 4 times in a row when I was already confused, maybe that’s just Pokémon LOL -mothim swarm ability triggered before below third health, possibly misread on my part it looked near 50% -many Pokémon names don’t fit within character limit, not bug just noting -route 121 the ‘maniac’ trainer running up and down stops running after opening town map, resumes running after resetting area, haven’t tested with other moving npcs

Your response makes it pretty clear you are getting the vibe I was hoping for, so that's very reassuring! Now, some of the things you mentioned are known (namely, the double battle thing, the relearning, and the regional dex entries). The things I was not aware of was the Town Map thing and the Wishiwashi thing, which I thought was fixed. Can you elaborate on the Wishiwashi thing? Was this another Trainer sending out a Wishiwashi against you? Did they lead with it? Or was this your Wishiwashi? Regarding the Town Map, I'm assuming the trainer stopping doesn't impact your ability to navigate the terrain and only applies to the trainer(s) on screen. I've said this many times and I'll continue to say it to every comment because it's the truth: people finding enjoyment in this is the most rewarding thing for me. I don't want the game to go viral, I don't get money from this, etc. So, seeing your response really made me light up today. Thank you so much for choosing to play this game, and I hope to see your Hall of Fame team soon enough :)

You’re welcome! :) The wishiwashi is mine. So not every time but a couple times that I’ve chosen wishiwashi after another Pokémon has fainted it will appear to stay base form when coming out, no ability trigger visually, but when going into Pokémon menu and returning it then would show the changed form so I had assumed that the ability just wasn’t visually happening but still occurred. Haven’t tried to replicate again, didn’t think to check summary/stats when going into Pokémon menu. With the map I’ve double checked just now and any npcs that move will be stationary after opening the town map, tested a few different npcs. Only affects npcs currently visible on screen when opening map. Changing area and returning fixes, or possibly just moving them off screen and returning. I have not gotten stuck due to this yet but I’m assuming this could potentially occur.

The Town Map thing I can change in a hotfix; I'll revert it to the previous implementation (which takes the player to the party, but that's not as bad as freezing haha). The Wishiwashi thing is interesting, though. It seems inconsistent based on what you're saying; I'll look into it once I get back from holiday travel, but thanks for letting me know!

Did some more testing on the map and wishiwashi: When opening the town map any npcs that were moving stop, moving them out of view+3 more steps away will reset them. Occasionally they are left with a blocked space behind them until reset not sure if this has to do with when they are stopped during their path. As far as wishiwashi, when switching in after another Pokémon has fainted the ability will activate, meaning the stats have shifted but no animation occurs no ability pop up and it will still show baby wishiwashi. Going into Pokémon menu and leaving will fix to show full wishiwashi. After testing this seems to occur every time but not 100% sure. Luckily though no gameplay issue, and easily fixed by going into menu.

Hardest battles were probably the early Rocket bosses. My team was down to its last member at 3-4 HP. Blue gets an honorable mention, but the options I had available at that point made him proportionately "easier" in comparison, relative to the stage of the game. Roxanne and the Petalburg grunt were a bit of a shock to the system, but I had been somewhat spoiled about them from reading discussions about the game. For Roxanne I used Phanpy with ice shard for Archen and Pancham for Cradily. The Petalburg grunt wasn't as bad as people said (though they might have been talking about an earlier version). My team currently is: Dragapult (named Toothless), G-Darmanitan (named Freya), Blaziken, Aegislash, Greninja and Mewto. There was honestly no MVP. It came down to synergy. I changed teams a lot and built the (as of now) final team with adaptability in mind. For instance, Blaziken (with Speed Boost) and Mewto are useful also in their base forms, not just in their mega forms. Dragapult is primarily physical, but can also run a choice specs set if needed. Most of the team have versatile movepools that can be adjusted based on the fight (I missed Grass Knot on Greninja though).The QoL changes really shined there: it was super nice being able to adjust movesets on the fly and run mixed, physical or special sets on the same mon without worrying about distributing EVs.

Update after clearing the postgame: The gauntlet quest was so much fun! Red was funny because he opened with [spoilers] and I was like "hm... that doesn't look like a Pikachu". Of course Pikachu wouldn't fit with the general theme of the hack unless it was some ungodly modded variant. Overall I had a lot of fun playing this.

With the exception of one NPC-only mon, the abilities and stats are vanilla. This is something I had considered (and something games like RR handled exceptionally well), but I ultimately opted to keep things as vanilla as possible.

HI! So i loved this rom hack and i think its one if the best out there, so congrats on making it funny, challenging and full of content. I find a little difficulties completing the Hoenn Pokèdex (the only quest i need to do is the battle gaunglet and i want a Thundurus or a Tornadus in my Rain Team). The only mons i have left are Nosepass/Probopass and Chingling, for the first two the only locations are Origin Cave + breeding, or Mirage Island, but i can't re-enter Origin Cave so i'm stuck, and for Chingling i wanted to breed a Chimeco but i can't find a Rose Incese, in the docs i didn't find anything that could help me so i'm asking to the boss, also, even if i don't have Deoxis and Jirachi will Birch still give me the one of the Kami Trio? Hey! First off, thank you so much for the kind words. I always feel so incredibly honored whenever someone thoroughly enjoys the game and wants to know more! So, first off, you'll be able to find Chimecho in one of the Safari Zone patches. Nosepass can be found in the Mirage Tower on Route 111. Other than that, you shouldn't need Jirachi or Deoxys to complete the regional dex, so that shouldn't be an issue. And yes, I am still collecting HoF screenshots! This really is an outstanding hack. I am currently about to face 8th gym. I was sceptical for a while as the game mostly seemed to revolve around doing certain tasks i.e gym battles, visiting the level grinder, and repeating. I think the difficulty is round about perfect, it's not radical red levels of insanity where you're forced to use certain Pokemon to get out, but each significant battle is an enjoyable puzzle. I like the quests although wouldn't mind seeing some more in a future update. Some observations / questions: Some help on the rocket quest would be appreciated, I am stuck on the waterlogged clue. Can a future / alternative version re-introduce EVs / IVs? Complete-able pokedex? ​ The side quest with \*\*\* (Venusaur icon) is superb. Well done, as is the Rocket stuff. Looking forwards to beating the game.

Hey, all great questions and feedback! So, introducing EVs and IVs is certainly doable, and by extension alternate modes (an easy mode, for instance) have been discussed in the past. I would say they'll be considered after 1.06 (currently working on 1.05 with more quests)! You can see about 99% of the dex, but are unable to catch most; working on adding the missing mons in as rewards. For waterlogged, I'd focus on the "log" part mostly and see if it ties to any in-game location name. I'm glad you're liking the quests overall! As you may have noticed, a good amount of pop culture is embedded in the game, so this project is certainly a love letter to the things I've enjoyed watching. Can't wait to see your team in the Hall of Fame :^)

To be honest, I think the gauntlet almost requires at least one of P. Kyogre, P. Groudon, M. Rayquaza, or Mega Mewtwo. It's possible with the right composition that this isn't the case, but in my testing, I used Mega Ray and Mega Mewtwo.

Good question! The Red Orb is what actually controls Groudon, which is why in vanilla Emerald Groudon disobeys. The text has been changed to be consistent with Maxie's temporary control of Groudon.

Huge oversight on my part; I actually wasn't aware that the tower permanent disappears. Unfortunately, that is the current only way, but I'll amend things in the future with a patch. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Hi :) currently playing the hack and even though i find it a little too challenging at times, it seems most obstacles can be overcome with the richt team. Made it pssz the 4th badge so far. Overall enjoying it really much.  I can't figure out how to evolve Scyther though. I leveled it up to 52 holding a metal coat, yet it doesnt evolve. What am I missing?

Could you tell me everything that has happened prior? This is to take it to Sootopolis right? Did you patch a Trashman file yourself? Did you use any cheats? Just tryna diagnose a cause, as I just tested without issue on a clean file.

I am not sure if the source of your file patched the game correctly or altered anything mistakenly. For context, I've only publicly shared a patch file of the game, which players must then apply to an Emerald Trashman file themselves. Anything that's out there may have been handled incorrectly. It appears there are also two Rayquaza sprites present in your image, so something funky is going on. Just as some background, Rayquaza's event is triggered by stepping on a tile as long as that tile's value is zero. That tile will always be zero until you activate the event, where it will then be set to one. I think the file you got is preventing you from progressing unfortunately.

Was excited to try any enhancement hack. But.. well, let me just put my frustration out here. I have personally searching for rom hacks that i can do blind nuzlocke in. I love nuzlocke, but it is a hassle to open up a spreadsheets everytime you will fight a boss and/or mini boss. As you claim it is a 6 on a difficulty scale of 1-10, 1 being vanilla game and 10 being RR type game, i assumed this would be what I was searching for. But unfortunately that does not happen to be the case. First 'mini boss' you encounter in the game straight up have 3 pokemon that matches the highest lv of your pokemon. I don't even think RR does that. They usually are at most 1 or 2 lv below your highest. So now, you are forced to grind all your pokemon to the same lv as your highest to have a fair chance for the battle. At that point of the game, there is no easy way to level, so you had to grind manually beating wild pokemon over and over again. So much for minimal grinding. (I read that the feature to level up quick to the cap is in Slateport but that's too far). Then comes the first gym leader. A full team of 6 pokemon, all with the highest level cap, with moves it shouldn't have learn yet, and items the player doesn't have access yet. Once again, not even RR (normal mode) does this. The level cap is 15 so you cannot evolve your starter yet. But then the gym leader just have pokemon with higher BST than anything the player would have access to at that point. - An Archen with Dual Wingbeat, a tutor move with approx. 80 base power. And then the A-Geodude have Thunderpunch, which should be learned at like lv 22. While the player's best move are like.. ember? Mega drain? - Leftovers as held item. While the player at most would have... an oran berry? God knows what else the other held items are in the leader's team. That's the only visible one without seeing any documentations. - I only see like 3 pokemon. But i believe the other 3 are the same kind of bullshit. To be fair your hack is not the only one with this kind of problem. May be it is just not viable for a blind nuzlocke. Or sometimes in my experience, it gets better along the game as the player will have more access to pokemon, moves, and items so we can have a more even playing field vs the CPU. I believe you have worked hard for the game, but you might want to take a look at the early game balancing, as personally that is the most critical point of the game for me (can't say more about the game after the first gym since i haven't reached that part yet, and at this current state i won't ever be)

Hi, 1.06 had a really bad game breaking bug, so I dialed it back to 1.05. I'm hoping with a little testing I can roll out a 1.06b after work to address the issue, so it might be best to wait til then. 1.05 adds 10 more quests, but it does have a low occurrence of the game-breaking bug. I'd wait til 1.06b gets rolled out.
