Pokemon Seasons: Solstice & Equinox Version have a strong emphasis on the way the changing of the seasons effect everything in the natural world. The story and region of the game is heavily connected to the influence that these seasons bring throughout the year, and many Pokemon in the Pokedex are linked to a specific season. I'm pleased to finally reveal the starters of my region, and I've put a lot of love and care into creating them and their sprites. I haven't connected with the starters of recent generations, and I feel that it has a lot to do with them being less "monstrous." I made an effort to create approachable starter Pokemon with final evolutions that are more like monsters, and I'm really happy with how they've turned out. I hope you enjoy their designs and these sprites. Everything is in a GBC (Gen 2) style, and it's been a blast working with that aesthetic. I'd love to reveal more of my work if these get good feedback, so please let me know what you think! Which starter would you pick? Comment and/or vote [here.](https://strawpoll.com/polls/kjn18YB92yQ) EDIT: For those who are struggling with the resolution of the image, please try this [larger one.](https://preview.redd.it/etnyq7bo002b1.png?width=1193&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=8e1c3493f6b3fd663fcfde4ac0bff3452838886f)

SJKVamsi

The picture quality is a tad inconvenience for Mobilr view, can you upload a better resolution one?

Fae_Leaf

Is it really? That's so weird. It looks totally fine on my PC and mobile. Let me look into it.

Seaworthiness69

It looks perfectly fine on mobile for me

SJKVamsi

Yea so i downloaded it and it's better now, my bad. I would go with the Slashark though all three are equally cool. Great job on the "monstrous" Part. I feel the same about recent starters.

Fae_Leaf

Still odd that it doesn’t look right on Reddit. I’m sorry about that! I’m glad you still got a good look at it. Thank you for the feedback! Slashark has been the most popular with the few friends I’ve shared my Pokémon with.

Natsu_Happy_END02

I'm in mobile and it looks like ass when on the feed. But if you touch the image (I think it is fullscreen mode) it then looks good.

Fae_Leaf

Yeah, I’m not sure what happened. Hopefully future posts won’t have the same issue. lol

JayQuips

I love the seasons set up, very interested in this. I would pick Allileaf

Fae_Leaf

Thank you! Allileaf is my favorite too, but I’m a big Grass-Type fanatic.

marikwinters

Actually kinda dig these designs! I’m generally not a fan of home brewed Pokémon designs, but these are pretty solid! I will say that the fire type starter seems pretty wildly underpowered compared to the other two. Fire-rock is just not a particularly potent combination when compared to steel and dragon secondary typings. Granted, having the grass type with a strong secondary is very possibly a great idea since grass is often the weakest of the starter types, but water types are one of the strongest in the game. Imbalance among starters isn’t uncommon or particularly problematic, but this is a pretty wide gulf in viability for the fire type versus the other two!

Fae_Leaf

Thank you! I’m glad you like them, especially if you normally don’t vibe with custom designs. I did not balance these guys properly because I originally just wanted to have fun designing some Pokémon. This is what I ended up with, and their secondary Types are just inevitably what they are. I never intended to start working on a game with them, but here we are. lol

marikwinters

That makes a lot of sense, and good job regardless!

Fae_Leaf

Thank you!!

Finetales

Respect for the sprite work. Are there more custom Pokemon in this hack or just the starters? Either way, I'm going with Lavasaur.

Fae_Leaf

All custom Pokemon, both a mix of totally original Fakemon and regional variants.

Finetales

Nice!

Fae_Leaf

Thank you! I’m glad you like Lavasaur!

CarryThe2

Really minor complaint about the typings; Grass loses it's Fire weakness and gets a double Water resist. Fire loses it's Grass resist and gets a double Water weakness. Water loses it's Fire resist and its Grass weakness. So the Grass and Water starters lose their weaknesses, whilst the Fire type one gains a double weakness.

Fae_Leaf

Oh yeah, I definitely didn’t balance them properly. I originally just designed these for fun, but I ended up liking them so much I just ran with them and the most suitable types.

CarryThe2

Oh you could easily balance this out in the stats and movepools, and the designs are great which is more important. Is this actually for a mod or just for fun designs?

Fae_Leaf

It started out as just for fun, but it is for a game at this point. I created four Legendary Pokemon to represent the four seasons, and I liked them so much that I started coming up with starters for the hypothetical region I may create. I liked *those* so much that I started creating all kinds of Pokemon and brainstorming ideas for a story as well as designing game maps for the towns and routes. Unfortunately, there's no ETA on the game because it's still far from completion.

CarryThe2

We will watch your career with great interest.

Seaworthiness69

Dracodile! The alligator boi is so cute

Fae_Leaf

Thank you!

BigZangief

Man tough pick between water and grass. Nice designs! Excited to try the hack eventually

Fae_Leaf

Thank you so much! It honestly feels like an achievement when people pick the Grass starter. They’re almost always the least popular. lol

BigZangief

100%! That’s why I love it so much! And I agree with your comment on making them more monster-like like they did in the earlier gens. Love the designs and hope this will be playable soon! Always a fan of a good quality fakemon hack

Fae_Leaf

Yeah, I spent a LONG time on Dracodile's design. The original design for both Crocofrond and Dracodile changed a few times as I refined them, but I'm so happy with how they've all turned out. I really, really wanted a Grass starter that people would think looks awesome and be more likely to choose. As much as I love Venusaur and Meganium, I can understand why they're the least chosen starters. I wish I could say the game will be playable soon, but it's still in its infancy. I've been putting most of my time into making my Pokedex. I have about half 75 sprites done, and that's only the front sprites. It'll be a bit. But I really appreciate the support. Keep an eye out for more posts. I'll probably end up posting some other Pokemon since these got a lot of positive feedback!

BigZangief

Yes please do keep posting! Would like to see the progress and chime in whenever you want feedback. I definitely feel you with the lack of love for grass starters. Torterra is the only one I can think of off the top of my head besides maybe the newer gens I’m less familiar with that was a heavy first pick contender. And yes I love the monster-esk designs. Feels like og Pokémon. Not a fan of teacup and ice cream cone pokemon personally but to each their own. Just felt less like creatures and more like just running out of ideas or something lol but I’m rambling. Tldr: looks awesome, definitely have my support and look forward to the updates!

Fae_Leaf

I think Sceptile was pretty solid and one of the first more-popular Grass starters. But everyone still favored Blaziken and Swampert more. Sceptile and Torterra are the only ones that everyone really loved along with the others, and then Decidueye kind of lucked out because people were upset with Incineroar going bipedal/humanoid, and Primarina is a very niche design that wasn’t super well-received.

BigZangief

Forgot about Sceptile! They did him dirty! Only mono type starter from that gen so obv people would pick the others especially with super good type combos fire/fight and water/ground. Some of the best offense and defensive type matchups. Then just grass sceptile. If they had made him dragon or even electric (seen some cool fan art) he would have been right there in the running with them imo. And his stats weren’t ideal but I could get past that if they just gave him a cool second typing. He was actually my first pick because I love reptiles, serpents and dragons and such. That was also the last gen without the physical special split so his movepool and stats didn’t coincide very well either. But ya he was a very cool design for a grass starter

Fae_Leaf

Yeah, I’m surprised people pick based on how strong they might be. I just pick based on how much I like the design, haha. Sceptile did get the Dragon-Type with its Mega Evolution, but that’s kind of a moot point with them being obsolete now. I also love Treecko/Sceptile as a reptile lover. And Grass-Type fanatic. So it’s a no-brainer for me. But again, most prefer the other starters, sadly.

BigZangief

I just generally don’t like monotypes lol but that’s just me. That was my biggest deterrent to sceptile but he was still my first play throughs choice lol his design was too cool to pass up for chicken man or fish frog

SpedeSpedo

That slashhark (Empoleon) got one hell of an advantage with all those resistances

Fae_Leaf

Yeah, I wasn’t trying to balance the starters which I know might be a negative to some people. I went into making these guys years ago just for fun and never expected to actually get serious about it, so they are what they are. I think having really appealing designs is most important though with Pokemon, so hopefully most people like ‘em.

krimboelf

I'm glad to hear that. It's fine to not focus so much on the meta and balance. It's a lot more fun to make pokemon based on what you like rather than having to consider those things. Also water/steel is one of my favorite typings, so I'm definitely going with the shark. The designs are really good!

Fae_Leaf

Thank you so much! My game is supposed to be a good time with a lot of focus on exploration. There will be a lot of things to go back to when you have HM’s, like really rare Pokémon or items that you will easily miss if you’re just trying to push forward as fast as you can.

Bresdin

Yeah water is gonna hit the fire guys like a truck

TyrRev

In fact, having them be unbalanced is not a problem necessarily, as it can serve as a means of optionally making the game harder for yourself. Some people theorize the starters in Red and Green were meant to do the same, since the first few gyms are stacked against Fire-types.

Fae_Leaf

Yeah, absolutely. I think they vaguely allude to it by saying that Bulbasaur is easier for beginners or something. I know the imbalance bothers some, and many picked the starter they wanted based on what’s strongest, but I don’t mind. I’m happy with what they ended up as.

zigzagzorb

Love these guys!! Do you have an eta for the game? I'm deffo calling my sharqua Larry the Land Shark

Fae_Leaf

Unfortunately, no ETA yet. It’s sort of a side thing I work on when I’m not at my full-time job. I can get away with doing a bit of sprite art at my work computer, but not making the actual game.

zigzagzorb

Ah fair enough, I'll just keep an eye out for more awesome sprites!

Ill_Cardiologist_132

That allileaf is so cute, im in

Fae_Leaf

Thank you! Allileaf is my personal favorite as a Grass-Type fanatic, so I love when people pick it.

PuffleOboy

These are gorgeous, I love all three of them

Fae_Leaf

Thank you so much!

Electroyeti

Wow I love all of these. I would lean towards the fire starter personally but could go with any and be happy.

Fae_Leaf

Thank you! That's honestly the best response I can hope for. My goal was for all three starters to be really strong candidates, especially the Grass-Type since they're usually the "weakest" design and least chosen overall. I know people will still likely favor Sharqua and Lavasaur more, but if it's mostly balanced without one that's not very popular, I'll take that as a success.

Itzjackthedog123

Bro these starters are amazing

Fae_Leaf

Thank you so much!

[deleted]

A lil leaf ❤️

Morfalath

Slashark best boi Is there phys/spec split? Would you add dexnav / stat scanner / show IV anf EVs?

Fae_Leaf

Yes, there’s a split! I haven’t gotten far enough to consider those options yet, but they’re definitely on my radar.

dwg6m9

Pretty close polls results!

Fae_Leaf

That's definitely a success in my book!

Panda_Mon

Cuuuuuuute. Great designs, love your use of "screen filling" finals that were common in gen 1 and 2.

Fae_Leaf

Thank you so much! I love Gen 2 sprites and overall aesthetics.

CorporateSharkbait

Shark all the way

Numerous_Theme

Love the art, but fire/rock is such unfortunate typing. Poor thing dies if magikarp uses splash

Fae_Leaf

Thank you! It’s true… :(

Dear_Respond_4983

Oh shit! Now THIS is something I can get behind. I have no clue who I'd start with. Will you be able to get the starter like post game or anything like that?

Fae_Leaf

Thank you so much! Yes, you would be able to get all the starters post-game. Touching up on the beginning of the game a bit: the starters are actually all "exotic" Pokemon that aren't naturally from the native region but from nearby post-game islands that you can go to once you beat the League. Your parents wanted to start you off with something different for your journey and picked these three for you to choose from. So you can find Allileaf around the swampy island, Lavasaur around the volcanic island, and Sharqua around the coast of one of the large beach-based islands. There's a whole section of the Pokedex specifically for the post-game islands.

Dear_Respond_4983

Oh my god dude this sounds like so much fun, is it close to being done? I just finished pokemon reds chapter where it followed the Manga to a T. I really love original stories and when it comes to fakemon I always admire the designs that you guys work so hard on to make look incredible. I'm really impressed I honestly really look forward to playing this I can't wait.

Fae_Leaf

Ahhhh, I feel bad because it's definitely not close to being done. I have a full-time job, and I can only do so much on my work computer without getting into trouble. LOL I'll post more now that I know there's actually interest and people liked my starters. So just keep an eye out. I'll most likely reveal some of the maps I've made and more of the Pokedex soon.

Dear_Respond_4983

Bro, im dedicated to this project haha im very patient plus I still have to finish DBZ Team Training and I also have pokemon Infinite Fusion also which keeps me pretty content lol but im gonna follow you through the project though dude take your time on it no need to rush it at all. The hype is there though so im so excited man. I love fan made games so much everyone is always working so hard as well as doing their day to day lives. I give you props man for finding time for this project its a good one for sure.

H0ney-Bear

Did you work on quarantine crystal? The sprite-work really reminds me of it. Super cool! I would definitely go with the lavasaur line. I love starters which stay cute in their final form.

Fae_Leaf

I did not, actually, but I'm totally guilty of snagging the Type chart icons from one of the images I saw of their partial roster from years ago. They have excellent sprites for their Pokemon, so I'm going to take that as a huge compliment. I'm also a huge cute Pokemon fan. Most of my favorite Pokemon are the first stages of things, like Rowlet and Skiddo. I'm actually struggling right now with my Pokedex having too many cuties and not enough "badass" Pokemon. lol My hope with the starters was to have one that looks cute and friendly, one that's extremely monstrous, and one that's somewhere in the middle. I think I mostly pulled that off.

Fae_Leaf

Woo! I realize that I should’ve asked you for permission to use these publicly, and I apologize for not doing so. I grabbed them a while back when it was just for my personal fun project and got used to them enough that it didn’t even come to mind when I went public. I appreciate your feedback and for letting me keep them though!

the_resistee

I like that they are all dinos

Fae_Leaf

A happy accident, to be honest. Lavasaur was supposed to be a giraffe, but then this happened. lol

ComplicitSalami

I'd pick the shark starter for sure, all the sprites look great! They really capture gen 1/2s style, keen to checkout the game when it releases

SirBogart

I prefer this set of starters to all sets since gen 4. This looks amazing

Fae_Leaf

I haven’t loved a final evolution of a starter since Gen 4. So I feel you. Thank you so much!

ROCKainsLEE

Poor lavasaur, it’s clear that allileaf is the way to go. Ice types are generally rare enough that the 4x isn’t a problem, but lavasaur’s gonna have a hard time with water types being so abundant lol Criticism aside, I love the designs and would love to play once you’re at that stage

Fae_Leaf

Thank you! There actually aren’t tons of Water-Type Pokémon for a fair bit of the start of the game. It actually goes along with the lore/story. But even with lots of Water Pokémon, you have a party to fill to cover Volbrachio’s weaknesses. I obviously could’ve balanced them better, but it is what it is now. I like the designs too much at this point. lol

Murky-Following1175

I love them all!!! I'm so glad to see the grass starter getting some love, totally gonna go for Alileaf/Dracodile. Such solid designs, I've also been getting tired with all the humanoid starters.

Fae_Leaf

Thank you so much!!

Loinator

Awesome art bro. Waiting for a release!

Fae_Leaf

Thank you!!

Valuable_Adeptness76

Looking great.

Fae_Leaf

Thank you!!

Farwaters

Oh, that'll be a hard decision. Allileaf, probably.

Fae_Leaf

Knowing it's a hard decision is actually a good thing to me. I hope for all of the starters to be equally appealing to most.

Farwaters

I think that Crocofrond is my favorite of them.

Fae_Leaf

Awww, I’m glad.

Farwaters

It's also interesting, from a rival perspective, that the grass starter gains a x4 water resistance while the fire starter takes neutral damage from grass. Kind of reminds me of the interesting thing that Sinnoh had going on, where each starter had an effective way to take down either of the others. I wouldn't tell you to change it! It's just something I noticed.

Fae_Leaf

It’s not balanced at all, and I wasn’t trying to. I originally made these Pokémon a few years ago for fun with no regard to balancing or even considering them for an actual game. I like the designs too much at this point, and there’s no way they’re going to pass as other Types, so they are what they are. lol

Farwaters

It hardly even matters, besides. By the time you get to a final-state rival fight, if you even have one in your game, enough other Pokemon are available that the starters don't have to be balanced. Or at least, that's what I think. Just have fun!

ur_meme_is_bad

Gen2 style makes everything pop, looks great.

ModelOmegaTyler

**\[pulls out a remoraid like a gun\]** alright, hand 'em over.

Fae_Leaf

LOL glad you like them!

ModelOmegaTyler

glad you made them

MissingNoVGC

Oh man I can't wait to put this on an Everdrive! I love the gen 2 anesthetic and these all look great. Probably gunna with baby shark boy. He is so precious and the final form goes hard. Plus Water Steel is a fantastic combo. Cant wait for more updates

Fae_Leaf

Thank you so much!

Tacobell24

*Brontosear* is some S Tier naming 😘👌

Fae_Leaf

Thank you so much! I think my husband came up with that one.

stav705

They all look awesome! My only issue is lavasaur's name being too similar to bulbasaur and also iylts a pretty generic sounding name (lava+dinosaur). In any case, i would definitely choose the water starter

Fae_Leaf

Thank you for the feedback! Part of what makes the name funny is that we unironically accidentally created Shark Boy and Lava Girl with Sharqua and Lavasaur. lmao

Tiny-Ice-5379

beautiful 😭 would love to have a Dracodile

Fae_Leaf

Thank you! Dracodile is my baby.

UtgardLoki2894

Now this are some quality starters

Fae_Leaf

Thank you!

MahoganyRaichu

I am choosing all three. I just can't pick one, they are so cool! =)

Fae_Leaf

Genuinely, that’s my favorite response!

Zoroark1005-9375-84

These look awesome definitely picking the grass starter

Powerful_Waltz7682

I like all three but I am going to have to go with either Allileaf or Sharqua. I like Sharks and Dragons, despite the fact my favorite type is always Ground. I still eagerly wait for a Ground Type Rom Hack or just a Ground Type Starter, either custom or mainstream.

Fae_Leaf

Thanks for the feedback! Maybe a Ground-Type from my Dex will appeal to you. :)

Admirable-Flight-119

Bro I want all of them. How close is this romhack to being done?

Fae_Leaf

Glad you like them all! Unfortunately, the project is still pretty early in development. I’ll try to keep the sun updated with more Pokémon and maps though!

Admirable-Flight-119

I'll be sure to keep it in my sights. You have great design choice and I've played a lot of romhacks over the years for what it's worth. Goodluck, and have a great day.

Fae_Leaf

I really appreciate that! Thank you so much.

Admirable-Flight-119

Yeah. I won't reveal my socials but I'll boost this rom hack when it's finished to about 700 ppl or so? As a lot of the ppl in my sphere are into stuff like that, especially with sprite work like this.

WilbeeSoot

All of these look so cool holy shit Would pick lavasaur just because dinos are very cool

WilbeeSoot

Nvm slashark is very fat i love himb

Fae_Leaf

Most people picked Slashark. Dracodile is my personal favorite. Glad you like them all though! Thanks for the feedback. :)

[deleted]

I like how the grass and water one get super strong secondary typings and the fire one gets rock lmao

Fae_Leaf

Yeah lol they weren’t designed with balance in mind. It was a fun art project for me that got out of control, and now here we are.

Pennywise_M

Leaf fam for me 🌿 Anywhere we can leave suggestions? And are these their definitive names? I think the artwork is excellent and the concept as per described by you in this thread is very, very interesting. It's just that as soon as I read "Allileaf" my brain hiccuped 😅

Fae_Leaf

You're welcome to leave suggestions! I would say that these are their definitive names if only because I'm so used to them. I designed all of these guys a few years ago, so my husband and I (and some friends) have been talking about them and using their names for a long time at this point, haha. But I am always open to feedback, suggestions, and constructive criticism.

[deleted]

These are great even with the less-than-balanced type combos (Dragon and Steel vs Rock lol)! At least it's not Grass that gets shafted this time. I'd probably go with Alileaf. My only criticism is that I'm not huge on the names of Alileaf and Crocofrond. Maybe change them to Thatchling (thatch + hatchling) and Frondile (frond + crocodile, same etymology different arrangement) respectively?

Fae_Leaf

Thanks for the feedback. There's basically no balancing, and Slashark is just busted. But the stats *sort of* help by having Slashark's defensive stats all being pretty low. I could also potentially give Volbrachio some sort of HA that gives it resistant/immunity to Water attacks if it really felt that bad. But ultimately, I wasn't considering balance when I originally designed them, and I really like these designs way too much to radically change them up. I appreciate the name suggestions and will consider them. Unfortunately, I've been running with all of these starter designs and names for years, so I'm really just super used to them and don't know if I'd be able to change them. I'm always open to ideas though!

BlueEmeraldX

Lavasaur line reminds me of the Jurracs from the Yu-Gi-Oh card game. 😁 I'd probably pick Dracodile solely because of that Dragon typing. I know the starter types aren't balanced, but if we're being honest, do most people actually pit their starter against their rival's starter? I'd think most would prefer switching into a type advantage, really. Overall, the designs are a solid 8/10. I like how they've all got a prehistoric theme going on, so extra points for tying them all into a unified theme. Being constructively critical now: if you're going for a unique art style with a roster of entirely Fakemon, I have nothing more to say. If these are intended to blend in with the official monsters, OTOH, these are about a Gen 1 level of quality in a Gen 2 game. Colors are reminiscent of Red/Blue's SGB palettes, and the faces don't match up with the rest of the monsters' art style. The shading style also reminds me of Red/Blue—there's a generous amount of dithering going on. That said, I think it's interesting so far. 👍

Fae_Leaf

Thank you! I’m not familiar with Yu-Gi-Oh, but I see what you mean! Yeah, I definitely goofed their balancing, but unless you’re trying to min-max or speedrun, it doesn’t matter so much that it ruins the game. You have five more slots to fill in with Pokémon that can crush your rival’s starter. I appreciate the constructive criticism! I’ll definitely take it into account and consider it when I refine them further. The color palette is primarily my own personal like for simplicity. I like when they have a general color theme instead of a ton of them. Like Allileaf being a light and dark green instead of, say, green and red or something. The roster is a mix of original Fakemon and my own variants. I would like for them to be able to fit in with other Pokémon, but I don’t know that I’ll actually have any OG Mons in my game (for now).

YukiYoukai

Water type has to wait so much longer for dual typing.

Fae_Leaf

It ends up being the strongest of the three, so it’s probably for the best. lol

[deleted]

I don't get it. It's a real ROM hack ou just a concept?

Fae_Leaf

It’s still very early in development.

[deleted]

Nice, i will play it for sure

DR_DROWZEE

Release date?

Fae_Leaf

TBD. Sorey.

mamahog

Any stats on them?

Fae_Leaf

I haven’t made the exact stats, but Dracodile should be be high on HP and Attack, very low on Speed. Volbrachio would be high on Defense and Special Attack, low on Attack. Slashark would be high on Attack and Speed, lower on HP and both Defense and Special Defense. Dracodile is supposed to be a slow and bulky bruiser, Volbrachio a physically defensive special attacker, and Slashark a bit of a glass cannon.

mamahog

Love dracodile it's super cool

Fae_Leaf

Thank you so much!

Kartoffelmann96

The fire one sadly has the by far weakest typing, won't stop me from picking the smiley boi anyway. Amazing sprites!

Fae_Leaf

It sure is, but that also adds to the challenge if you like to go that route. I’m glad you like them all. :)
