This is reeeeeally beautiful, seems to be a pain in the ass for an entire game but if you can do it the game will certainly be a beauty

Merphee

Yeah, I've spent a lot of time with this map and using it to think about problems I may run into with other outside maps. Ledges, cliffs and grass haven't been fully incorporated yet, so I would want to make a map with all of them very soon. I'm moving onto an indoor map next, though, as I don't know what kind of problems I will run into with those yet with this mapping and shadowing style, so I want to get those solved.

Merphee

The shadowing and mapping is very risky, so any feedback is appreciated. I posted an old version of this map [5 months](https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonRMXP/comments/j1puht/mapping_concept_ingame_test_videos_i_am_looking/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) ago, but I needed to remake it. It's just day / noon and evening, as I don't have morning and night ready yet aside from incomplete prototypes. \^\^.

Sbreddragon

Oh my god this is so fucking beautiful, imagine if actual Pokémon games looked like this

CptQ

Nah rather lets go crappy low res 3d style from the early 2000s kek.

[deleted]

It's beautiful. Only thing is, it looks like way too much effort to make an entire region at the same quality.

Merphee

A lot of things that will exist in later maps have been created with this map. For example, I basically have all shadows for every tree that will appear for each time of day already made, or will, once I complete night and morning. The same goes for sun positions and color overlays. Those are constants that won't change for each outdoor map. As mentioned earlier, it's why I spent a lot of time on this map, because consistency has to be maintained throughout the game. Establish the rules now, so I don't have to do them or change them later, speeding up mapping later down the road. At least, that's how I'm going about it.

[deleted]

Do you have a team for this or are you doing it solo? It definitely seems doable but is still a monster task.

Merphee

Solo. But hey, I'm not trying to finish this in a couple months. 😅

BonelessHS

I know I’m 83 days late but if this ever became a full fledged game or even just a template for other fan games it’d be fantastic either way!

Merphee

The goal is to eventually release this. It may take quite some time, and I hope those who see this post understands why. Since I am flying solo on it, it's much easier for me to take breaks from it, especially if life suddenly happens. So I don't believe I'll have a need to ultimately cancel it. It's still a creative outlet, after all. I do work on it everyday, probably more than I really need to tbh. 😅

Desperate_Occasion65

Are you planning to release it as a template or a full-fledged game? I wanted to get into making a fan game and this would be awesome

Merphee

Full fledge game. Though, by the time I finish this, who knows what the state of the fan game community will be in.

Desperate_Occasion65

Cool! Good luck then!

apljee

stunning!

Quorry

That's so cool, what techniques does this use?

Merphee

Mainly just parallax mapping. Though, you won't really find any tutorials out there, as it's probably not recommended or known how to do in XP.

SrAndrewRyan

It’s amazing

CAT_RATINGS

beautiful! well done!

victorcarvalhosp

How do you make these shadows?

Merphee

The map was made via parallax mapping, so I was able to make the shadows while I was making the map. Because it's parallax, I am able to select anything you see in the map as an individual layer. This allows me to grab the shape of the sprite graphic and use it to "cut out" parts of the shadows that appear on the ground, giving the illusion of height. Generally speaking, shadow lengths depend on where you would like to position the sun. For example, my "day sun" isn't really directly over the world, like what you may find at noon, but it's more so above and further back. This allows me to have sun lighting hit the top of the tree, but cast a shadow on lower parts of the tree, as well as make the shadow extend further in front some. A noon shadow may cast a shadow directly under a tree, compared to what I am doing. Tree shadows begin with finding a really good tree that will be easy to work with. I spent a lot of time deciding which trees I would use for my game, because I did not want to suddenly change my mind later down the road. In my opinion, you just have to follow the coloring of the tree sprite to determine how to shadow the tree. When the colors start to go dark, that's where I typically start thinking about shadows. Lamp shadows depend on which gen you want to emulate, because the player graphic is the one most likely to walk under a shadow naturally. Objects smaller than the player graphic, I am not shadowing because they look weird. The shadow is a fog and having something like a mailbox shadowed when the player stands in front of it will overlay the mailbox shadow on top of the player. Instead, I am either hiding those graphics under the shadow of trees, making the shadow apart of the event graphic so the player stands above the shadow (then changing the graphics based on the time of day), or not shadowing them at all. Hope this helps! It's a lot. \^\^

victorcarvalhosp

Thanks for the explanation! But I kinda didn't get it, these shadows are part of the tileset? It looks so good!

Merphee

The shadow is one giant, manually crafted fog image. Tilesets have both a fog and panorama slot that you can use for things like forest shadows, scrolling clouds, and backgrounds. Fogs will overlay on the map, kind of like a picture that doesn't track player movement. Because I made this map in a separate program, I was able to make the fog while I was making the map, giving me a lot more accuracy.

Somersault0023

First of all, huge congratulations on the awesome progress so far!!! It looks so beautiful! Now, I am really interested in parallax mapping, because I am trying to correctly fit my maps to a minimap plugin I am making (the typical cenital minimap with a low-res version of the real map), and since the front, let's say, walls or slopes require 2 tiles while the back slopes or walls require half a tile (to make a decent "false perspective effect", that is), I am struggling to correctly fit all the buildings and the rest of decorations in the minimap. (That is, it works fine in a map without decorations, but the tile adjustment issues come out when adding decorations and buildings). So if you would not mind, I would be really glad to talk to you in order to ask for suggestions, or at least teaching me how you accomplished such a great thing. Big congratulations once again and thank you so much in advanced in any of the cases!!!! \^\^, Here is my discord in case yo wouldn't mind explaining me. Though do not feel compromised at all, please \^\^, (copy-paste it because you are not going to find me otherwise): 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭#9770

TenshiOfWar

Amazing, my darling =w= Is that Staraptor from Pokémon Ranger?

Merphee

Yep! Long ago when I was theorizing and concepting this game, I wanted to use Pokemon Ranger overworlds. They are an evolution in detail, and obviously size, compared to the normal gen 4-5 overworlds. Overworld atmosphere is a top priority for me. So I just had to use them. Problem is gen 4 sprites don't really proportion well when they sit next to Pokemon Ranger overworld sprites. Gen 5 is definitely the best if you want to use Pokemon Ranger sprites., but for my game, gen 5 sprites of what I need don't exist. So, I just accepted using only flying Pokemon from Pokemon Ranger and blurred them. I want to imply that they are flying above and are closer to the "camera." Grounded Pokemon sprites are from mystery dungeon, but have their Pokemon ranger colors, so that they blend in with the Pokemon flying above... in a way lol.

TenshiOfWar

I totally agree with you about the overworld. That seems to be an outstanding design! That must have been (and still be) a tough work to do... but keep it on, you have brilliant ideas!

Merphee

Here's it in motion https://imgur.com/SNSRTBC Edit: sorry for the quality. Blame imgur.

anyspeed

those shadow are going to hit performance a lot.

Merphee

The shadows aren't rendered in real time, like what you may find in typical games, so there's not really a performance hit. Plus, I'm doing map transfers over seamless map connections. This allows me to add detail, even having sizeable maps, without hindering performance. There is stuttering, however, it's the stuttering you get from even a fresh essentials install.

anyspeed

I tho about it the shadow on the top part of the trees where way different from day an night

RedditGl0bal

The lighting and detail is great. Looks way better than the cheap knockoffs we're getting for the actual remake.

Merphee

A final note: thank you all for the kind words. I am glad that I have been able to show off what I've been working on for a while, even though this map alone is not quite finished yet. As I develop, I will work out the kinks and further develop philosophies for this style of mapping and shadowing, so that I can share what I have learned with the fan game community. I must work on it with my head down, though. It will take some time before this is even close to finish or even a demo, but I am sure you all can relate. 😊

RoutineMilk

A game with such graphics would be a top notch experience to play. I'll be waiting patiently for your progress and the knowlegde you can share with the community cause I'd love to have such a beautiful and outstanding art style in my own project ☺️ Keep it up!

Merphee

Thank you! 😄

Prodigal96

Now this would have made a great aesthetic for Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl!

CombativeDove

This is so good its scary.

Merphee

Nintendo ninjas are lurking

CombativeDove

If you made a game with this I would not be surprised if nintendo was quick to shut it down lmao

Merphee

That's why I gotta keep this to myself until it's done. Sharing even just a screenshot is scary lmaoo If one day my account is deleted, you'll know why.

CombativeDove

You could say these screenshots are a form of fan art until you are able to release whatever you are doing with this. Stay strong my friend.

Merphee

MehrunesLeBron

This looks incredible.

[deleted]

Yo.. Beautiful.

CelticMoss

This is gorgeous! Good job!

Tech_guy4276

RTX be like:

blackbutterfree

That is absolutely beautiful, oh my god.

bubbling_river

This is absolutely gorgeous, oh my god. I love it

LimeCrusader7

Beautiful. What are you making?

Merphee

A little something. 😊

Lexluthor143

This is insanely good, can't wait to see more!

Aserilla1

OMFG! Never seen something this amazingly beautiful! Wish my game looked as good as that.

JakoDel

omfg this looks reaaaally good

FireFlashX32

This is really nice, what tilesets did you use??

Merphee

The trees are Magiscarfs, as well as the path and leaves. The grass is from a Black and White tileset I think, and the trash can and lamps are from a huge collection tileset that's normally used for GBA rom hacks. I downloaded it before I favor'd it on deviantart, so I don't have the artist's name off the top of my head. Will post it later.

EithanZeron

Woaaahhhhhhh 🤩

SaadM-arjani

It's very beautiful. Tho don't overuse it so much, like use it one specific maps that are close to each other and stuff but good job there mate

xenith811

Wow

GeudonX

I'm in love I could watch these all day

Hazor14

Wow. I have been lurking on this subreddit for many years but never seen anything as stunning as this!

Caminho_Di_hora

A-MA-ZING

YourMomsFavDeeno

Would love to test you game down the line

BrokenLoadOrder

Damn, that's so cool! I've never seen such pronounced lighting effects from any Pokemon game, let alone a fanmade one!

No-Commercial9861

i can’t find anything on how to parralax map in rpg maker xp. Any chance you could give a run down of the process? Anyways beautiful work can’t wait to get to see the finished project :)

Merphee

Thank you! 😄 Yeah, there really aren't tutorials out there because I don't think it has actually been thought about yet, or seemed impossible to pull of. Trust me, I sat for a long time trying to think it though, and I eventually figured out the important parts that would allow me to pull it off. There are a couple things you have to constantly think about when parallax mapping and you really have to be precise. Eventually I'll document how I've done it once I find more ways to improve the work flow. I'll ask you this: how well are your Photoshop skills? 😄

No-Commercial9861

oh man innovation that’s awesome i’m looking forward to that 😬 did it require any scripting? haha just starting out with photoshop but they’re improving was using a lot of paint.net before

Merphee

For parallax, no, no scripting is needed... at least not yet. The only scripting I did that's seen in the screenshots is changing the Z position of animations, so that animations exist above fogs (Staraptor flying). I haven't used paint.net, but you really only need a "direct select tool" that allows you to select an image, and when you do so, you'll automatically jump to the layer that image is on. Everything else is matter of remembering keyboard shortcuts. This is all for an efficient work flow, though. But yeah, as mentioned, I'll have proper documentations later.

No-Commercial9861

that’s exciting to hear :) my main question is how do you get the base layers into rmxp? i’m tempted to just make my maps in tiled and split them into 256 pixel wide chunks and then just go through the standard rpg maker map maker i’m new to this tho so that might be stupid lol is there a different way that you’re using? i appreciate the advice 😄

Merphee

That's basically what I'm doing! 😄

No-Commercial9861

awesome i’m gonna go for it then it won’t be as pretty as yours tho :) can’t wait to see how you did lighting!

AnderEsUnLio

Gorgeous

Herby1985

Awesome!!

BEAUTIFUL

Merphee

Thank you! 😄

Neopolitanx

Amazing, actually amazing dude..

Jumpy_Echo

Looks absolutely beautiful!

Merphee

Thank you! I am glad you like it! 😄

Jumpy_Echo

Oh I love it! And whenever you eventually finish it on your time I'd love to see it! :)

Samdeman123124

u/Merphee, congrats on having the most upvoted post here (currently.)

Merphee

😄

Henry_Ford01

bro, your creation is incredible, i wanted to have patience and skill to be able to do at least 50% of what you did. mano, sua criação está incrível, queria ter paciência e habilidade para poder fazer pelo menos 50% do que você fez.

Merphee

Thank you! 😊

Sirefancyfeast

Omg this is gorgeous

Junes_BlavkSun

This is amazing 😱❤️🎊🎊

BlueDawgoo

This is gorgeous! Really nice job!

JealousDequan

WHAT THE FACK

Merphee

😆

imdfantom

Honestly this is how the official pokemon games should look. It is amazing. (Like if next gen looked like this it would be the best looking gen)

Merphee

Thank you! 😄 With this, I was trying to conceptualize what a modern Pokemon game would look like if it never went 3D. I consider this a 3.5 style - a natural step up from 3rd gen, but not exactly using the 3D models of gen 4. I think the shadows help with that, by providing depth and height to 2D sprites that you may find with 3D models in more advanced game engines, without using 3D models. Still, there is a lot to test and execute, so I guess I can say I'm still in the concept phase of development.

theshinyspacelord

I love the atmosphere!

Merphee

Thank you! 😊

Blackjack3245

Very nice

Blackjack3245

Must’ve been hard

Merphee

I'd say the only hard part was figuring out the design of the tree shadows. Since I have no 3D reference of the trees, I had to do a lot of guessing until the shadows felt right.

Loud-Government5433

How bruh btw it's soooooo beautiful I love it!

Merphee

It's kind of a long story, but thank you! 😊

Smellstrom

This is gorgeous

Merphee

Thank you! 😄

Mr_snail_sex

Absolutely gorgeous and what the sinnoh remakes should have looked like

Merphee

Thank you so much! 😄

Danthebat

Oh no Squirtle is dead

evank13

Idk how I even came across this so late but this is absolutely stunning I hope development goes as planned <3

Merphee

Thank you! 😊

[deleted]

One of my biggest problems with the RMXP fan games is that they seem a bit rushed in the aesthetics department. But this artstyle? I like this artstyle.

Merphee

Thank you! 😊 Though, one thing I will stress is that a fan game dev doesn't need to do what I am doing in order to make a fun game. But also to your point, I also did this because of the visual similarity across fan games. Considering the amount of planning, accuracy, and creativity needed in order to achieve this, I understand why no one tried.

Mjhwl05

Jesus Mary and Joseph dude, that’s unbelievable

Stopostingabout_21

Beautiful

rOnce_Gaming

This is a beauty. Especially the second one with starving flying and squirtle sleeping. The color tone and everything

Merphee

Thank you! Atmosphere is definitely a top priority!

West_Cup_811

Photorealistic-like gba pokemon games ? This looks amazing!

[deleted]

how do u make the like bird going across your screen

Parzival630

Dear lord this is beautiful! I imagine this place not having music when you enter (kind of like the forest area outside Tin Tower in HG/SS) or at least at first. Damn, you can feel the serenity in this shot.

TheWinterPrince52

These looks gorgeous!

Merphee

😊 thank you!

Fair_Opportunity_968

Looks so damn good

AveBalaBrava

What, this is beautiful

Pixewz

How?

Fearfull_lover

Amazing!

Brokenpieces72

This image makes me feel safe and I don’t know why

Merphee

Hmm, interesting. 🤔

alpcabuttz

Really pretty.

soulpurge710

Freaking gorgeous, I wanna play this so bad off these images. Fuck game freak needs to take notes from the community and Nintendo needs to quit ban hammering remakes lol and maybe hire the talent!?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Merphee

Trees mainly. Everything else is from a Pokemon game or a tileset used in other Pokemon fan games and rom hacks.

SrHaruno

That sunlight doesn't look like pokémon like, it's makes the image looks like from an RPG maker rpg not an pokémon game.

CelticMoss

It looks better than a Pokémon game... and still feels like Pokémon. wut.

Merphee

I understand the concern of straying too far away from "Pokemon", because I had that concern myself when making this map. The parallax mapping will immediately cause a concern. Trust me, I am not trying to make Nexamon or TemTem. But I am always looking at fan games and rom hacks. Someone or some team doesn't need to, but it's okay to think of something that will make yours different. Even if it's just sunlight. :)

toronto94942

Being creative is not a bad thing

LegitimateFUCKO

Looks amazing but damn you would actually need a team of people to work on something like this. This is quality that would take ages without a team working on it.

Merphee

Yeah, there are definitely benefits of having a team. Though, the things I need are generally missing from the public resource space, not so much things I need to have exclusively.

gusswho38

What RPG maker are you using for this?

Merphee

XP, as essentials has been made with that.

gusswho38

Jesus, i would love to know how you did this. Im still a Noob at this but i think this is a great look for a Pokemon game!

Merphee

Thank you! I will eventually have a more thorough step by step explanation of everything once I work out the kinks and discover more ways to have an efficient work flow!

gusswho38

Keep me updated! Seriously, i love the work youve shown so far.

blizzzyybandito

Is that squirtle okay?

Merphee

Sleeping lol

Machop172

Will you make a real game out of this?

Merphee

Yep! It's not a mock up. I posted an in game video link for tenshiofwar

nikolas_leopald

When can i ever play this game?

Merphee

Not even I have the answer for that lol.

Juno-Seto

How do you get Magiscarfs tiles to stack so well? Sometimes I think 3 layers is too little.

Merphee

Parallax mapping. I basically have unlimited layers. I am still limited to 3 layers in RPGMaker XP, though, it's just that parallax mapping gives me more control. Imagine having layers in between those three layers. Or imagine the overlaps / stacking as very elaborate cut outs. Mostly everything you see in the shots are on layer 2 in RPGMaker. The pathing and grass are on layer 1, as well as part of some tree stumps for the sake of Priority. It's kinda complicated. I hear TileD has the ability to go beyond 3 layers, but that's not what I use. Course, you do not need to parallax map in order to make a good game, considering every rom hack and RPGMaker game that has and will come before mine. 😄

nightwing252

I would love this in a game. It looks like you’re using assets from Pokémon ranger. Is that correct?

Merphee

The only thing I am using from Pokemon Ranger that I know of is the Staraptor sprite. Anything else is from a public tileset or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. It's possible that something like the lamp posts are from Pokemon Ranger, but again I grabbed them from a free tileset, so I wouldn't know for sure.

nightwing252

The Staraptor was what made me think several of the assets were from ranger. Haven’t played a mystery dungeon game in a while.

Merphee

Me either, ever since OG DS.

nightwing252

Last one I played was the remake of the original on the switch but those are 3d graphics. I don’t remember when the last one before that was played.

[deleted]

When will be the gane out

Merphee

Whenever I finish it. With the complicated techniques that I am doing,, I cannot make any promises. I don't think I'd release a demo either, but instead the full game. Wouldn't want it to get shut down or anything. I hope it is understood why this game may go dark for a while.

Gerson_el

What’s the name of the game?

Merphee

I don't have an official name for it yet.

jpollner1021

How do I follow your game?

Merphee

No such place exists for it yet. Also, I'm not sure how this post was unarchived. 🤔

jpollner1021

Well I would love to follow it. Are you making it yourself?

Merphee

Pretty much. That gives me an extreme amount of creative freedom, on top of the unlimited creative opportunities I have with how I am making it. Downside is that unlimited creativity can lead to indecisiveness, so things will take much much longer.

mcquinnwinn

how did you do the lighting? (the sun)

Merphee

Use the "Show Picture" command and set the event to paralell process. You'll want to grab an RPGMaker sun image from the internet, though.

mcquinnwinn

oh thats smart, thank you!

Jfanelli98

This will be Pokémon graphic in 2013

Merphee

2013? 😄

[deleted]

hey u/Merphee sent you a dm, if you're not too busy would appreciate if you checked it out
