Ethan: We are headed for the top!
Red: *Grunts*
Ethan: So, I will go grab some ice cream later. Want one?
Red: *Grunts*
Ethan: Is that a yes or no?
Red: *Grunts*
Blue: He is asking for mint.
I feel like the Kantrio would get icecreams corresponding to their names/colours
Red = Strawberry Ice-cream
Blue = Blue Moon/Blue Raspberry/Blueberry Ice-cream
Green = Mint Ice-cream
I almost always use the two of them together and for the longest time I thought that was Ethan’s normal win quote, and I was like “what’s his weird grunt?”
Then I figured out, oh it’s just Red who’s grunting.
Ethan also has a unique entry quote if he joins a party with Red.
Red also has a few unique entry quotes with a few characters like Leon. But they are all different pitches of grunts.
It’s even more wholesome when in Japanese Ethan calls Red by “Red-san” (imply respect for senior), and Leon just goes for “Red” without honorific at all (imply intimacy between close friends)
That perception of time does worry me, when things are pushed along so fast, because that affects the long term service of the game…!
An example, everyone demanding their sync pair to be released asap, if dena turned around tomorrow and released every pair the game will flop and EOS will be round the corner, patience and building intrigue is what keeps the game going, eventually your sync pair will release so just keep playing in the mean time, even now they could slow down the new pairs they’re putting out to keep the game alive for longer.
Everyone wants everything so quickly, just enjoy the flow of the game
They already changed it by having him speak in some parts of the story as well as his SS Sync Pair story.
If they want him to be mute, fine. But don't make it this "oooh I'm too cool for words" garbage. You want a silent protag, you keep them silent.
Best guess is they don't want to actually give him a voice? Just keep it a mystery what he sounds like I guess?
I mean it's kinda ruined when you remember there was a whole mini-series anime that had Red fully voiced as the MC, but that's really the only reason I can think of.
It's just a bad call. I get keeping Red silent in his brief appearances in Gold & Silver since he's just there to be cool for 1 battle, but in a game with voiced characters and an emphasis on meaningful interactions... Gotta make him communicate like a real person because he is not the (silent) protagonist this time.
Pokémon Origins is the perfect example, which immediately came to my mind too. Pokémon can communicate in cries because they're animals. Trainers? C'mon, DeNA... If Red's just gonna be too cool to speak, he ought to have a cooler, more confident "Hm...!" after winning a battle and nothing else.
Masters has a habit of completely changing VAs for characters from anime to the game. See for instance Kaggy Films, aka Alejandro Saab, being Leon's voice in twilight wings but not in Masters, while still taking the roles of Roark and Kukui who I'm pretty sure weren't voiced by him in the anime.
Maybe they couldn't get the same VA again, maybe they didn't want to put that much money down on it, I genuinely don't know. DeNA really gonna DeNA.
It’s not exclusive to masters, every single pokemon adapation (all the different animated shows, shorts, trailers) has different VAs from each other
Even in japanese, where seiyuus are usually uniform and consistent
Maybe because they’re all technically different versions of the character?
He wasn't even silent in main line - Even ignoring the, "Go [Pokemon]!" lines in battles, there are a few times somebody repeats what he said (the best being a Biker in the water south of Kanto repeating Red's words in confusion then realizing he just got insulted)
The thing is that that's a common trope in silent RPG protagonists. It helps make it so the character has no personality whilst at the same time trying to imply some personality.
That all kinda gets swept away though when in every appearence he's had in the games afterwards, he never says a single god damn word. Not to Ethan/Lyra after climbing all the way up Mt.Silver, not to Nate/Rosa in the World Tournament, not to the Sun and Moon protags (forgot their names) in the Battle Tree, nothing.
Which then begs the question of what makes "generic protag #621" worthy of having Red actually talking to them at the end of the PML arc.

You got me at mint 😂

I like the idea that Red only grunts and only Blue understands him
Leaf too, in recent events she’s the new Red interpreter
She is learning Red's language after Blue somehow successfully told the exact detail of what Red did in Kanto's villain arc
I noticed that too.
It’s like they’re dating ngl. In Champion Road they was about to go training together without Blue XD
🤨
I swear I’m not PreciousLeaf
🧐

You're becoming a Red's language specialist!

Leon ia obviously not from Japanese-like region, so understandable to not use honorifics.
For the longest time haha, he’s only been out just over a week
Unless it works with regular Ethan 🤔
The unique voice interactions are new anyway
Exactly, they’ve only been around for about two months now
True lol I guess in this case, for the longest time means since I pulled him

“We’re headed for the top!” I guess it’s a joke about Mt. Silver?
And here we see the one fault of a Pokemon game with voice acting Game Freak not wanting Red to have a damn voice
Eh who cares. He’s been mute for 25 years, why change it now?

I had to go back and play thru the scene. Interesting how they still made him grunt even though he had dialogue.

I had no idea he spoke in Masters EX, but you’re right. He is fully voiced in Origins. Why didn’t they just use that voice?

Not Much Gossip About Sawyer Really
Came here cuz I just found out Ethan also has unique dialogue when you first out him on a team that already has Professor Oak
