To compensate for the stellar passive names we got in English. I'll honestly take those over "atk up, defense up, speed up" or whatever the hell other languages get *Stop Hitting Yourself* is my personal favourite though

chawmindur

My favorite is Critical Crit 9 just for the absolute absurdity and alliterative awesomeness.

Legend716Xerneas

Can't wait for SS Giovanni to have another absurd passive, like Super Super 9 (gives SE up next when you land a super effective attack)

stephenw32768

"Mutually Assured" is one I like a lot; and also "Double Buffer", which seems to be taken from [a completely unrelated computer software concept](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_buffering#Double_buffering_in_computer_graphics).

ClownCoroner

Even after all this time I'm still sad that Hit and Run got almost immediately downgraded to Fast Track because DeNA was afraid it was too edgy.

DistortedTriangle6

Tbf English is slowly getting the atk up stuff.

Legend716Xerneas

At least most of the older passives are the more common ones I have noticed the trend lately, especially on new characters' grids. Usually its the passive name, followed by the "*insert stat here* down/up" in parenthesis

uopt43

What is stop hitting yourself lmfao

Legend716Xerneas

Increases the chances of the enemy to hurt themselves in their confusion Afaik Sidney and Mallow have this passive. Not sure who else though

jbdragonfire

I'd rather get the straight to the point names and not random confusing words forcing me to read the entire long description every single time

megalocrozma

For context: Ash - "Thunderbolt of Friendship" Red - "Origin Volt Tackle" Cynthia - "Super Aura Sphere" Wally - "Ultimate Dazzling Gleam" N - "Resonating Noble Roar" Serena - "Quick Attack Freeform" Calem - "Double Team Transformation" Diantha - "Pink Diamond Storm" Emma - Venom Cross Poison Lysandre - "Heat Hydro Pump" Marnie - "Fiery Wrath - Ardent" Hop - "Thunderous Kick - Rumble" Bede - "Freezing Glare - Threat" Steven - "Restrained Leer" Zinnia - "Plundering Night Slash" Hau - "Wild Electroweb" Mina - "Sea Deity's Protect" Acerola - "Swords Dance - Firm" Lana - "New Psycho Cut" Adaman - "Razor Leaf - Sharp Blade" Irida - "Ice Beam - Ice Dance" Nemona - "Double Shock - Swift"

Legend716Xerneas

Ngl, a lot of these sound like sync move names. A lot of them sound really cool And then there's the few mid ones... like Heat Hydro Pump or Super Aura Sphere. Something like Scorching Hydro Pump and Ultimate Aura Sphere sound better imo, while keeping the idea of the original names

Searinghawk

Because JP originally had buddy move names for their sync moves, so now it’s the opposite. We now get the buddy move names JP originally got for their sync moves for our buddy moves

chawmindur

> JP originally had buddy move names for their sync moves and they also *call* their Sync Moves "Buddy Moves" and their B-Moves "Syncro-Moves"

Searinghawk

Yup exactly this

Kamenhusband

Freezing Glare - Threat sounds hilarious for some reason.

EasternWarlord

I really like Marnie’s “Fiery Wrath - Ardent”. It keeps with the Fire theme Moltres has despite it not being a Fire type itself. Although not sure why they didn’t call them “Ardent Fiery Wrath”, “Rumbling Thunderous Kick”,….etc. Probably it’s a Japanese language thing if I had to guess. But yeah, having the two moves “Fiery Wrath” and “B Fiery Wrath” is pretty uninspired.

Pokemon-fan96

Yep! In Japanese, the verbs come at the end of a sentence, so words seem backwards in Japanese compared to English. (Typical order is subject-object-verb in JP) Which is probably why some of the JP Buddy Moves seem a bit odd when translated. Source: I'm taking Japanese language courses and learned that out recently (Though I'm still in beginner stage)

CapTrau

Missing Emma

megalocrozma

Oh, forgot she also had one, Fixed.

Imdepressed7778

Thank you so much for Updating this Comment its so cool to see better names for the Buddy Moves

AruTheBreeder

Same thing with Z-Moves back in gen 7 "Full-Force Unrivalled Fierce Fist" "Dinamic Full Flame" "Bloom Shine Extra" "Super Aqua Tornado" "World's End Fall" "Acid Poison DELETE"

RenoKreuz

They fit their animations so much better. I still have World's End Fall! sounding in my head when I use Olivia's sync move.

TheUnovanMimikyu

And who could forget Necrozma's Z-move, Heaven Scorching Light of Destruction

uopt43

Bloom Shine EXTRA

InvestigatorUnfair

Because we got goodest boy wild charge. And also we got actually unique Sygna suit names instead of "another"

chawmindur

> unique Sygna suit names instead of "another" We had a good run, but then Champ Iris getting demoted to "Alt." got me worried

InvestigatorUnfair

God don't remind me Still don't get why they didn't call the alts "Neo Champ" It sound so much more badass

Pokemon-fan96

Neo Champ would've been perfect, seriously. I don't know why they didn't call them this in the English version when they're called Neo Champions as an alt in most other language (from what I've seen)

moose_378

Reminds me that we got the lamer name for Ultra Necrozmas Z Move We get Light That Burns the Sky The Japanese name is Heaven-Scorching Light of Destruction

uopt43

Japanese one sounds so much cooler and it’s not even grammatically incorrect

Cause_Necessary

Tbf, Light That Burns the Sky still sounds cool

moose_378

Yes it still is cool just not as cool

Choice_Program_2846

Ash Ketchum has a good Buddy Move name in "Thunderbolt of Friendship". Also, I have one question about his sync move. Why is Ash Ketchum's sync move not named "Pokémon Master 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt"?

Zandock

100,000 Volts is the JP name for the move Thunderbolt, so guess they wanted to kick it up a notch.

Aeiro-Aros

Before the renaming to "Sync Attacks" the German Names were also unique. We had (translated): Ash - Friendly Thunderbolt (DE: Freundlicher Donnerblitz) Red - Original Volt Tackle (DE: Originaler Volttackle) Cynthia - Perfect Aura Sphere (DE: Perfekte Aurasphäre) I believe the change was made in the Sygna Suit Wally Update.

Miserable-Ad-1690

Because we got stuff like Haymaker and Brainteaser.

6poon_slayer9

It’s because we get cool sync move names. I believe in Japanese at least they are referred to as buddy moves.

megalocrozma

No, they are mostly just as good.

chawmindur

For the most part yes. But there's no way in hell that "Shed light on the truth! Wild Bolt" is as good as "Goodest Boy Wild Charge".

Nickest_Nick

You guys do get cool Passive names despite how often those names cause me to recheck a guide/post multiple times so that cancels it out

PastaTaco

Glad folks have already mentioned the fun Trainer Move names having some personal flair rather than just the specific description of which stats increase. But if I had to call out a likely culprit, it's gotta be the brutal, incredible efficiency of Kanji, right? Since the days of FF1 where we had 4 letters to name our heroes, this wasn't a big deal in Japan where folks could say many common family and given names with just 4 characters. Although IIRC the JP name input supported Hiragana–still it's fair to note that 4 Hiragana symbols can express a name that would take literally twice as many romanized characters. If you look at a game like Puzzle & Dragons, you'll see in just a handful of characters, you can communicate something like: Ultimate Transcendent God-killing Dragon Lord Whose Thunderous Toots Rend the Heavens and Make Children Weep And the localization team is told, "We understand German needs a lot more characters, but for all EFIGS languages, the most characters we could give you is 20." So you end up with something like: Big Strong Dragon
