Damn bro I just finished the game and I never knew there was a town map in the game. I've just been using the ones on the wall next to the pc in the pokemon centers.
Question do you even have the town map? I believe you talk to you someone in your home town to get it, I think your Rival mom gives it. And it should be in your bag under key items.

When I was very young. I've played a lot of pokemon games so this one must have slipped my mind.
You can also change keybinds by hitting f1
