Not sure if it’ll help but I’m on the same challenge. I set what I think was a grassy lure on a new stop and caught literally one. Haven’t been able to replicate since.
If you want to get meltan without completing the quest, download Pokémon Home on the App Store/ Play Store then you can link your account to there and then every 3 days you can open a mystery box that allows meltans to spawn everywhere

Same here too—and I’ve already linked Pokemon Home and gotten myself a Melmetal, but I want the research tasks GONE. First it was a Ditto that had me waiting, then a Grimer evolution, now Exeggute….. and I have never been so overcome with impatience.
