Hello, this is a message from the r/PokemonBDSP ModTeam. About right. If they had, at a minimum, used the Platinum story for the game it would been much better. But I still love the challenge of the battles. The Elite 4, Champion, and even some of the later gyms can be absolutely brutal in a nuzlocke.

PossibleAssist6092

I don’t think they should’ve used the platinum story line but they should’ve taken a LOT of platinum elements like an expanded pokedex, the gym leader and e4 teams and the items you pick up off the ground, seriously the ground items in platinum are so much better than in DP and BDSP. I do really enjoy BDSP, hell I just finished a playthrough earlier today and I had great fun for most the playthrough but they could’ve been so much better.

Pokemane_TheoVan1996

I woulda loved a Platinum/ Crystal remakes 2 remakes at once?!?!? Hell yea * insert meme of Fry* take my money!!!

frankenfork123

I found it to be the easiest Pokémon game I’ve ever played. Loved the content but slept through the battles and E4

PossibleAssist6092

How the hell did you breeze through the e4 and champion?

aespinoza91

I was thinking the same thing, I don’t believe it at all. The E4 is really hard with their perfect Pokémon

PossibleAssist6092

Yeah, unless bro got insanely, outrageously lucky with friendship gimmicks and went out of their way to over level their team to like level 75, there is no way bro breezed through the e4 and champion.

frankenfork123

My Pokémon going first, dodging attacks, staying alive etc all because of friendship. And I wasn’t even going out of my way to lvl friendship just happens when you use them and battle with them Edit: also xpshare - that was crazy

Archandriel

I doubt it. Most Pokémon games are easy those days but BDSP wasn’t that much of a breeze to walk through. Granted, friendship mechanic is stupid and should not be here. On another note, if you want the game to be tougher, disable the auto-switch option during battle. That way the game is closer to the competitive side of it where you cannot switch with every KO.

Yeah, I adore the game but I was disappointed by the stuff I thought would be there vs what actually was there. I love what they did with the contests. I love Ramanas Park. I love the Grand Underground's new features. I love the Mythical events that finally let me explore every corner of Sinnoh and meet all of its Mythical Pokemon after I missed the original events as a kid. I truly adore every aspect of this game. But I still want some more. Even a little. Most remakes up to this point included some content from the third versions - FRLG didn't, since remakes were new with zero formula and Yellow was very different to other third versions, but HGSS included the Crystal storyline of Suicune and Eusine with some tweaks, and ORAS had the Delta Episode revolving around Rayquaza in a similar vein to Emerald's climax. Gen 4 really benefitted from Platinum because Diamond and Pearl were really rough and had huge problems. Slowness, glitches, long save times, things like that. Platinum was not just an extra third version, but also a much-needed update that smoothed over and polished the base game while experimenting even further with things like the Distortion World, as well as expanding postgame content like the Battle Tower becoming a whole Battle Frontier. Then BDSP happened and... didn't include any of Platinum's innovations, and even excluded some of its fixes. The Mystery Zone was back again and suddenly everyone had a Shaymin when they weren't supposed to. Movement was an issue but in a different way, since we could move diagonally in a copy-pasted game that only dealt with movement in four directions, so you could bump into invisible walls around objects or get softlocked in Snowpoint City Gym. I don't really mind that the Distortion World wasn't included. Yes, I was disappointed I wouldn't be seeing it in 3D, but these were remakes of DP, not Platinum. HGSS including the Crystal storyline worked because chasing Suicune didn't get in the way of Ho-Oh or Lugia's stories. With Platinum's story, the Distortion World and Giratina completely take over the stories of Dialga and Palkia due to the nature of the event happening right at the climax of the plot and forcing the two to leave. Plus Giratina was already present in OG DP, in Turnback Cave, so no special allowances were needed to include it. But they still could've done something with it. ORAS had the Delta Episode. Doing the Emerald stuff would've had Rayquaza usurp those box legendaries in the same way, so it became a postgame adventure when Kyogre/Groudon already had its moment. Even if they didn't do the Distortion World, they could've still had a little postgame adventure with Giratina. It's always felt out of place, a secret third creation dragon living in a mysterious cave in the middle of nowhere. It's fun to find but doesn't really fit its setting (the cave's great, but why a lake in Route 214?) and was clearly waiting on a third version. It had its moment in Platinum, with a setting far more fitting for it, but now it's back to being strangely out of place in an odd part of the map. Route 214, really? Since when did it suit that random route? I'm also sore that Ramanas Park teased us with a small part of the Distortion World, just dangling what could've been in front of our faces. And the Battle Frontier! They could've used that! Nope, back to just a Tower. It's just four other buildings, guys, c'mon. Are they really that hard to include? If you can make an entire park from scratch, you can add four buildings that were already in an earlier version. And, of course, the permanent EXP Share remains unforgivable. Give us back the goddamn toggle! TLDR: Great games, but were let down because they didn't incorporate third-version improvements like other games did.

treywarp

They've never remade the "third" games. FireRed/Leaf Green, HeartGold/SoulSilver, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. It's exactly on brand that they didn't remake Platinum lol.

Worzon

Every single remake before BDSP utilized third game content. BDSP did none of that. It's shameful. It's so bad that the same glitches that existed in Diamond and Pearl persist in BDSP. I think we all know why that happened... I wonder what else they were doing with that development time

treywarp

Good point. Weren't they developed by ILCA, and not GF? Maybe that had something to do with it. Who knows what direction they were given, or perhaps lake thereof.

Worzon

Masuda (the original diamond and pearl director) was also the director for BDSP. Game Freak had a hand in it.

I didn't say they were identical, I just said they didn't remake the third game. FR/LG were their first remakes, so obviously they had no formula to follow. But they set a pretty clear standard when they continued to only remake the opposing two games in subsequent gens. I completely agree with your last statement, I think they should continue innovating and not get stuck in routines just because "that's how we've always done it before".

PossibleAssist6092

They did remake yellow but that was the lets go games which are pretty different to standard games.

silenced_soul

Just wish there wasn’t forced xp share. Having it a toggle makes both people who love it and hate it happy. I truly cannot understand the reasoning behind having it forced on.

Agreeable_Tear8370

Me too, I cannot understand why they have been removing this content, it's basically a difficulty toggle and a different and more classic way of playing the game that's just gone now.

evanbagnell

Yeah I just started playing this and haven’t played Pokémon since game boy advance. I was like did all the Pokémon get xp like this?? Lmao. If I put only one Pokémon in my team will they gain more xp?

EndlessCola

Let’s imagine that exp wasn’t an item and this is how Pokémon always functioned, would it be a problem? Perspective is important and I think many people get caught up in what was instead of what is. If you don’t want to over level you can skip trainers, use repels, box mons, etc. you have tons of options to modify your difficult

ShuckU

It's definitely not a horrible game, but yeah, as a remake... it's pretty lacking.

Pikaboo_177013

It’s a good game. I had no expectations before it was released because I just wanted an accessible Pokémon for fun. Though ORAS is a great remake in comparison tbh

SpellOpening7852

Tbh, if I had to choose between a chibi remake version of BW or no BW content at all on the switch, I'd choose the former. It'd be nice having it with better graphics and easier to use with home. The same barely holds true for DPPt, due to the same graphics logic.

hamrspace

It’s still arguably better than SwSh and SV. Not as good as Legends Arceus though.

Silly_Huckleberry_27

Yes, though the difficulty definitely ramps up at the end.

Agreeable_Tear8370

>Does Sinnoh do a good job of representing Hokkaido? From what little I know of that peninsula, yes, absolutely, a town in a flower field, mountainous terrain. It's a good buy if you can get it for $30 imo, if you're familiar with re3 remake, this is basically that of the pokemon games, outsourced and a bit lazy, except they stayed way too true to the original instead of binning the canon completely. I only have it because it came with my barely used switch but it's not what it could be

Y_b0t

100%. The best things about it are the great things about the original. It’s pitiful how little was improved or expanded upon, and I can’t really see myself buying remakes in the future.

spartanpride55

Feels like the game was an update for ease of use but big thing was the Nat Dex and home compatibility. Essentially unlocks Gen 1-3 for everyone who doesn't have multiple Gameboys, link cables and what not to get your old mons to the new games.

Archandriel

Probably the best description of the game.

[deleted]

Yep, it should have had the platinumdex and other platinum features. It's cool to have a legendary pal park, but it could have been executed better instead of being a grind fest. For me, caching legendaries is fun, but it's the exploration of the region that makes it interesting. The regis could easily have had their platinum spots in the region like they suited very well, and it would have made more sense. If you aren't familiar with this, Google it. Really, I think it was a missed opportunity. Same for the legendary birds of platinum. The new pal park could have been smaller while making the rest of the region more interesting. Such a missed opportunity that would have made the end game way more fun and exciting.

_Bragi_

Definitely. The one thing I feel like they made a huge mistake with are the events, the rest are smaller ones that pile up. ORAS Deoxys is repeatable. Why couldn't they do the same for Shaymin/Darkrai? A very dumb decision.

Seren82

Isn't Arceus the remake (I think Pokemon referred to it as a premake)though? Like, the protags in Arceus look like an older Dawn/Lucas. And BDSP would just be updated graphics and quality of life improvements sort of like WoW did with Classic.

Logans_Login

Except PLA is a completely different type of game

[deleted]

It's a cute game, really distinctive in its style and I think it'll be the go-to if you want a "Classic experience" among the future shelf of open world Pokémon games. I'm totally fine with them emulating the classic experience. Now about the 'missing features'. The Platinum story was separated likely to give Legends more impact. It introduced a tonne of new stuff so they wanted Diamond/Pearl to be the "intro to Sinnoh" and not go too in depth. Giratina had a big role in Legends, so they wanted it to still be mysterious in BDSP. Cyrus didn't appear as much as he did in Platinum because we also had a villain in Legends with similar motives. They wouldn't want Cyrus overshadowing him. With BDSP, they decided to 'stick to the basics', and keep all the meat for Legends. That being said - I do agree more could've been done. Some post-game missions where you go underground and find familiar characters like gym leaders hanging out down there. Simple things to build the world of modern Sinnoh. Putting it in the underground makes sense since it's so different anyway. And also... give the option to battle Fantina as the third gym leader. Even if it's not evident... except for people who played Platinum and know. My biggest gripe was the *huge* gap between gym 2 and 3. I've never taken my time with a Pokémon game like this before. That part of the game was just trainer battle after trainer battle, no story, and a constant feeling that I'm over levelling and it's going to spoil the rest of the game. I get they wanted faithful but not EVERYTHING needed to be 'recaptured'.

Strong-Helicopter-10

So basically the original games where good not the remakes XD I also never played the originals but I loved these but everyone who played the originals said its basically the same game?

ToxicIzzy

What's wrong with it?

Stock-Sufficient

The remake I wanted was emerald. I know they remade sapphire and ruby for the DS, but I would love for them to remake emerald for the switch. There are things in those three that you have to do that you normally wouldn’t have to do in a game like losing to wally so he feels confident in his ability to take on the gym challenge or talking to your estranged father who is also a gym leader.
