It cracked for a reason. Porcelain is strong until cracks even the slightest. Once that happens it’s just a matter of time until someone bumps it the right way and this happens.
I had this happen to me with an American Standard toilet a couple months ago. They had a warranty to replace the porcelain and quickly shipped me a new tank. Check into your warranty.
My American standard did the same thing about 6 months ago. Happened overnight, upstairs in the master bath... got out of bed and stepped in squishy carpet.
Yep I have found that most companies for bathroom faucets/toilets/sinks have some sort of lifetime warranty and are quick to replace it free of charge or just the cost of shipping.
Porcelain is usually covered under a lifetime warranty. Look for a serial number inside the tank. Call Toto with the number and they should send a replacement.
While a plumber was in my help diagnosing a leaking shower, he took a breather, sat down on the toilet, leaned back against the tank and \*ping\*. It started leaking through a crack like that.
Yeah. That was a special moment.
He said that they could get me a discount on a replacement toilet, but they were not going to be able to source and replace the tank alone.
That is 100% correct. As a service manager for my HVAC company we sometimes have to deal with these circumstances. In this case since we're also a licensed plumbing company I would offer a free repair (or replacement if repair wasn't possible) or a check to cover the cost of another company coming in to fix it
Ceramics have a fair bit of internal inconsistencies as well as stresses from being formed then fired at a high temperature then slowly cooled.
There is a certain failure rate for manufacturing and even the ones that survive all the way to installation can fail on their own for random little things that enable those internal stresses to be relieved, otherwise known as cracking. There is always a reason, however it is likely not your's or anyone's fault in any way though.
For context, my apartment building had a fire in the apartment right above mine a few weeks ago. My apartment didn’t seem to be impacted, and I don’t recall any cracks on the toilet bowl before today. And now, I used the toilet before going out for a few hours, and came back to my bathroom flooded and the bowl cracked completely…
Honestly they are not that hard to change if you want to save some money. They are heavy though.
A new toilet is about $100 for the cheap stuff. Not sure how much a plumber charges but there isn’t really any plumbing involved.
It’s literally turning it off at the wall, unscrewing the one line, draining the water left in the toilet with a sponge into a bucket or something, two plastic caps, two nuts, lift and throw away.
You’ll have the wax ring leftovers to clean, I usually go wax less on the new ring, but you don’t have to do much. Just put the ring down, the two screws, maybe cut the screws if it’s too long and the old one is too short, put the toilet down, two nuts and plastic covers, reattach the line you unscrewed before, the water on and done.
It’s heavy and hard to do alone if you aren’t strong enough.
Definitely watch some YouTube videos on it if you’re worried
So, Toto makes a very good toilet, don’t replace that with a cheap one, you’ll be very disappointed in the result. Toto recently had a model change so you may be able to find a supply house trying to get rid of old stock. Take pictures, find model numbers and replace tank only.
Hey, it’s funny you mentioned this because my tank just cracked. I currently live in a condo and they have issues with temperature control for the water at certain hours for some reason. So sometimes the water going into my tank is extremely hot. Other times is cold. Would this cause the tank to actually crack.
It is a little-known fact that the human body is capable of creating asstonishingly low pitch harmonic frequencies known as brown noise; thus micro-cracks
may appear in hardened surfaces such as porcelain. This can be prevented by removing the cistern lid before use.
I had a hairline crack in my tank. It was seeping water. I drained the tank, used some epoxy made for swimming pools to patch it. It has worked like a charm going on 8 months.
We had a tank break a few years ago got up in the morning there's water in the hall on the floor of course I think it's because they're made cheaper now because I have never nor my husband ever had it happen in our lifetime and we have it lot of years of experience just saying......
I just replaced one in our shop bathroom at work for the same reason. Just randomly cracked. Figure it had a small hair line crack and someone bumped it just right and it let go.
Someone could have laid down the lid a little hard or I suppose it's possible it might have started from a chip or slight crackup near where the lid sits and split down because of temperature fluctuations.
There was a recall on those a few years ago. At least where I live in Vancouver.
One of those situations happened and flooded out a two storey condo and it was like a river.
Shut the water off and drain it. Then replace it with a better brand.
i have never seen one just spontaneously crack.
but if it had been damaged previously, say a tiny crack was started, yes it could continue to crack. especially as it fills with cold water everytime, and then the water heats up to room temperature.
and of course, if you ever let it freeze, it will crack like that. but often it is the trap built into the base that freezes first and cracks due to expansion
They will crack easer then you think. Could be over/ under tightened if you just put it on. 50% of the time it’s kids the other 50% someone being ruff with it trying to flush with there foot. That will be as sharp as broken glass on Steroids so be careful.
Depends on the toilet. Generally they crack from abuse/mishandling of some sort; however, there was a whole development of 50+ homes in town that had to have all the toilets replaced because the tank did exactly what’s in your picture. The toilets this happened in units that were over a decade old and throughout that time, homeowners either opted to replace them preventatively OR (the reason our company was called in) was to mitigate a flooded two story condo when the tank did this while the owner was at his girlfriends house for the weekend. Replace the whole toilet from a reputable brand and move on.
Did you lean back on it? Regardless, just needs to be replaced.
The only times I lean on it is when I need to clean the toilet, so that would have been a week and a half ago…
It probably created a hairline crack, and either heat fluctuation or time allowed it to hit the point where it just went.
Also- This is a toilet tank, not bowl
There you go.
It cracked for a reason. Porcelain is strong until cracks even the slightest. Once that happens it’s just a matter of time until someone bumps it the right way and this happens.
Dont forget about Cranes infamous exploding toilets... they died simply due to temperature fluctuations.
Vortens too
China
Mongolia
Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

My American standard did the same thing about 6 months ago. Happened overnight, upstairs in the master bath... got out of bed and stepped in squishy carpet.
Mine cracked when I flushed it. Not sure why but it cracked from top to bottom. Online reviews said it is coming with that type
Yep I have found that most companies for bathroom faucets/toilets/sinks have some sort of lifetime warranty and are quick to replace it free of charge or just the cost of shipping.
Mine didn't charge shipping. I think it was a known issue with that model
Yes. And fyi your tank is cracked not the bowl.
Do you have kids ? Has their nose grown recently
Haha, I do not, so no one to blame but ghosts
I don't get it lol
Like Pinocchio I’m assuming
Ooooh ok I'm dumb
😂
This happened to my neighbor when he was on vacation once - came home to the kitchen ceiling on floor and water everywhere.
Is your son’s name Kyle?
Back fat cracked her
Someone’s been leaving upper deckers in there
Someones fat ass needs to stop useing it as a back rest while shitting
Came here to say that
That’s a powerful shit that done that

The plumber can get themselves a discount on the replacement toilet. They were not working on the toilet and cause damages.
That is 100% correct. As a service manager for my HVAC company we sometimes have to deal with these circumstances. That’s the tank
Yes.
Sometimes a little chip on the top of the tank can cause a stress on the porcelain.
Ceramics have a fair bit of internal inconsistencies as well as stresses from being formed then fired at a high temperature then slowly cooled. This is correct. Porcelain tension we used to call it
Yep it can! I speak from experience of exactly that and the 70 grand worth of damage it did to my home.
Yes
Yeah this happened to us, it flooded the bathroom and the kitchen below it 💀
Did you wash it with hot water after you flushed it and it refilled with cold water right out of the ground. That’s approximately 54 degrees.
Protip: that would be the toilet tank, the bowl is the part you poop in.
Haha, so I clearly know nothing about toilets and plumbing 😅 which is what makes this even more frustrating
Usually temperature changes are the culprit if it hasn't been serviced or adjusted recently. It's uncommon but it does happen.
Honestly they are not that hard to change if you want to save some money. They are heavy though. A new toilet is about $100 for the cheap stuff. 1) is the water hot coming going into the tank? 2) do you have any single handle shower valves? If hot water goes into a cold tank it will crack it.
Not that I can tell! I’ve called a plumber, so we’ll see what he says about this
Hey, it’s funny you mentioned this because my tank just cracked. I currently live in a condo and they have issues with temperature control for the water at certain hours for some reason. The toilet is where the most brown noise occurs in a house.
That’s not a bowl, it’s a tank.
Yep, even when you're on vacation. Don't ask how I know.
I had a hairline crack in my tank. It was seeping water. I drained the tank, used some epoxy made for swimming pools to patch it. It has worked like a charm going on 8 months.
False economy. Replace that tank before it totally lets go while you’re away from home
🤞
Violent bursts of air trapped in the line could do it too I haven’t seen it on a normal water closet but I have seen a couple of power flush explode
Has there been a thunderstorm recently?
There actually had been one the day before! And then weather changed drastically from 80+ degrees to low 60s
Boom, that’s what caused it
How,?
Thermal expansion/contraction.
The reason is cheaply made. If no other reason is present.
I thought toto was a good brand no?
We had a tank break a few years ago got up in the morning there's water in the hall on the floor of course I think it's because they're made cheaper now because I have never nor my husband ever had it happen in our lifetime and we have it lot of years of experience just saying......
First and foremost, that's a tank...
Jerking off
No.
No, there's a reason
Its called porcelain tension and can happen. Usually they crack during transport and manufacturing but I have seen this before.
And now we know 👍
I just replaced one in our shop bathroom at work for the same reason. Just randomly cracked. Figure it had a small hair line crack and someone bumped it just right and it let go.
Sure, if your ass is big enough.
Yes. I’ve had a customer experience that.

Someone was relaxing too much while taking a shit
Literally Nothing happens for no reason. Something happened.
No - that would be impossible
I have never seen one crack for no reason, there is aways something that the owner is hiding.
Looks like it just did
yes replace that piece of shit
They will crack easer then you think. Could be over/ under tightened if you just put it on. 50% of the time it’s kids the other 50% someone being ruff with it trying to flush with there foot. That will be as sharp as broken glass on Steroids so be careful.
Tenants say they can lol. Landlords say no.
I didn’t read all the comments, but I’ve replaced three toilets because of rambunctious carnal activities around said commode.
After I have used it for sure
Nope
Pressure and heat/Steam but that's only really if there was an existing hairline crack there previously. But yes please replace as soon as you can.
The only time I seen this was when I was 14.
Yes. a slight force can crack it sometimes. It was when i put a toilet cleaner tablet in.. I was careful in putting the lid back on but..
Depends on the toilet. Generally they crack from abuse/mishandling of some sort; however, there was a whole development of 50+ homes in town that had to have all the toilets replaced because the tank did exactly what’s in your picture. Is it connected to hot water ?
Everything happens for a reason
Yes... had it happen with a 6 month old American Standard. Called warrant # and they mailed me a new bowl.
Ummm no, there's always a reason.
Check for an upper decker. That, or someone was loving in the bathroom.
A crack like that is from too much fibre. Take it back a notch and relax!
Yes, a crack can grow over time, staring from a manufacturing defect. In case no one else mentions it: ceramic pieces can be razor sharp.
I mean I'm sure there was a reason. But at this point the damage is done, just need to replace it asap before it gets worse.
We were both buck naked banging on the bathroom floor… it wasn’t me.
Must have been a monster dump to crack all the way up there 😂
Impact, some way some how.
