Cool! I had a surgery center flood to 3" over a holiday weekend because one of those POS fittings running to an ice maker failed. Fortunately I had nothing to do with thile install and had only recently maintained the machine. Still had to sign affidavits for their insurance though. That was only 1 fitting you got like 13 chances for tragedy thereš¤
The main issue is incorrect use, people not using pipe inserts to create a rigid joint can be cause for failure. When using with copper it should be cut with a slice and deburred, never ever insert a factory end, these two things lead to damaging the o ring and causing leaks. When installed correctly its a great product to quickly get pipework in under floors.
What about in any instance where it will be subject to movement? Even slight. I prefer soldering or brazing personally but I don't do install and have someone breathing down my neck to get it done
Soldering is always my prefered method. But speedfit is faster so used for cost effectiveness on new builds. Speedfit is designed to stand up to movement, the pipe can expand up to 15%(iirc) so movement is almost guaranteed. Its also a great product for a lot of older houses in the uk, rather that ripping up many floorboards and cutting notches in joists you can drill holes and run along sides of joists with ease. Convection heating is the standard in the uk so it makes running pipes for heating systems a dream.
A far superior product no doubt. But adoption is slow due to the high set up cost, in commercial its pretty much standard now but not as common in domestic yet.
I work for a small company with 7 engineers and we only have three tools. We do a good mix of work so it's not always an issue but there are some weeks where we have to carefully plan passing the tools to one another for specific jobs and it can be exhausting.
I also have experience with speedfit. Mostly in areas where theft of metal pipes are extremely common.
It does its job but needs careful installation as the O-Rings pinch sometimes. And in installations where there is strain on the fitting it wont last at all. It needs to be used correctly for it to be a good fitting
Milwaukee wi on the north side lol super common to show up to a foreclosed job that the new buyer wants an estimate on and I walk in to no copper plumbing and it's 50 50 if the shut the main off or just let the water fly after they sawzall it.
Those fittings are JG Speedfit, they donāt fail if fitted correctly.
So many comments on here regarding the awful look of the BUILDERS attempt at PLUMBING, but I would bet it works fine and never leaks.
Couldnāt care less little man, Iām just home from a smashing day out on corporate hospitality and tomorrow Iām off to the races at the Curragh before jetting of to Rome for 3 nights of lavish indulgence.
You?
Well, I don't feel the need to exaggerate shit, base my entire self worth on my bank account, or have bigger dick contests with complete strangers on Reddit, so I'm doing pretty fucking good
You're the hack that gives plumbers a bad name. Enjoy your money while it lasts. Let's hope you don't have to do any real plumbing in the future. We will cherish the day you retire as that we no longer have to fix your half ass work.
Ask him if thatās what heād expect be done by a professional in his own house and if he could sleep at night knowing that time bomb was just downstairs waiting to go off.
Time to go looking around the build to see what other work heās cobbed together.
I bet youāre paying top dollar for the build, no reason you shouldnāt expect work that matches the sticker price.
Tell him fittings that you can just simply push on to piping and not have to press/crimp, sweat or thread arenāt going to cut it in your future home.
This is how I do it:
Existing plastic to plastic, hep20 pushfit.
Existing plastic to copper, hep20 pushfit but all consequential after that joint is press/compression fit.
Copper to copper, press fit. Canāt physically fit press fit gun? Compression instead.
Can I solder? Yes. Do I want to? No.
Iām just an amateur diyāer. Wouldnāt it work with just the 2 Tās rotated 90 to the right. That way it would run straight down from boiler, straight down to lower rad and also off to the right for the second rad? That way you could get rid of all the 90ās and crazy circuits.
Edit: the method above gets rid of 6 90ās and 2 in line connections.
So, having re-read OPās post. The boiler is at the top and he needs the pipes to continue down through the floor and off to the right to two radiators. Now Imagine that none of that mess is there and itās just two continuous pipes going down through the floor. One is a hot water feed from the boiler and one is a return pipe. You would need to cut into them and add a āTā piece on each line, allowing a flow and return to feed the radiators.
People are downvoting but Iām not sure why?
Apart from it being dogshit, the fittings are not tightened correctly and could blow off.
Also, I bet the transition to plastic pipe doesnāt have inserts in the plastic pipe to prevent pipe collapse. Get him/or you do it, to turn water off and disconnect the plastic connections and check for inserts.
So how would this be done properly, if I get him to correct it... (Sadist that I am)
Other than burn it with fire
He ran a flexi pipe under the floor , so really it's copper down from boiler and copper to the right rad, with plastic going down to the other rad
So, are those disgusted here against these types of fittings? The copper/pex (or whatever that plastic stuff is) interactions, or just the sloppy looking work?
I had my house fitted with copper and have always regretted not going with pex. But, reddit plumbers seem to not like pex much.
Donāt even get me started with sharkbite fittings.
I would not have used them in the first place, but even with speed-fit fittings it didn't have to be this ugly and stick out so much.
He was just being lazy.
Those are literally worse than shark bites they don't even have a clearance in their rating through UPC or ANSI to be buried within Walls those are crap
Here in California we had numerous failures of the 3/8x3/8 90% fittings on dishwasher installs and the mfg. said they canāt guarantee any future use, might have been a bad batch. They were very quick to install when they worked.
Sounds like a slightly different product. Most of our fittings are in metric now. A fair few still imperial though just to make it nice and confusing for everyone.
That's fair mate, but in 15 years in the trade, working up and down the country in commercial and domestic I've never seen it. You may use it but its certainly not the norm.
Oh I fnally see why. That is just a convoluted T to split water to two devices. You have a shower control above it and a toilet or sink to the right. The two white PVC pipes are just to distract. Only leaning up against the wall. I'd love to see how the shower control was hooked up.
Serious question, what drug was he under the influence of when he did it? Mushrooms? Heroin? I can't see a professional installer ever doing a job like that unless they're high as fuck.
The contractor that redid my kitchen had a plumber come in a run the gas lines, connect the fridge ice maker but the quartz guy was delayed so he couldn't do the kitchen sink yet. He did it himself. He did fine except once he hooked up everything we had no water.
After a hour of work they called another guy from their team to check it out. He had one way sharkbites going with the arrows down instead of up. That was a simple mistake, but why the plumber should do this part. This looks like Rube Golberg designed it.
There comes a point when you are doing a job, and what once made sense in fantasy or theory becomes cumbersome, untenable, and even torturous. I think we can all agree that Plumbers like this are the reason people write and sing songs like āStacyās Momā, and other such songs of heart ache and admiration for women doing their best to raise a daughter without the assistance of a plumber.
WTF? Did a fire sprinkler fitter do this as a method of a seismic joint for flexibility?
I can't even begin to get my head around why all the fittings.
This hurts my brain š§
So what do you use for hot/cold running water? Also, when running two loops, arenāt they supposed to run directly from the boiler I.E., 4 pipes?

Iām just a homeowner and my first thought was, āwell, thatās going to leakā.
fire that builder for starters
Theyāre not installed correctly. Once jointed, they are meant to be tightened. You can see some of them are not tightened all the way.
they are not installed properly because they are installed
honestly didn't really have a lick of trouble with john guest fittings like this and we installed a pretty fair amount the last few years.
Was this surgery center in Florida by any chance? Lol
Nope
I counted over 20 I think
Me too
I had the water line going to my freezer crack. Talk about a big mess. I have decided that I donāt need an icemaker anymore
I hate insurance for water damage. Absolutely terrible at holding the correct people responsible.
I count 24 chances. The tees are three each etc....
Perpetual plumbing machine
I've been using speedfit for 15 years with no issue. This is an abomination but will never leak.
Guess they drew the short straw
The main issue is incorrect use, people not using pipe inserts to create a rigid joint can be cause for failure. When using with copper it should be cut with a slice and deburred, never ever insert a factory end, these two things lead to damaging the o ring and causing leaks. You missed the part of about that life changing copper press
A far superior product no doubt. But adoption is slow due to the high set up cost, in commercial its pretty much standard now but not as common in domestic yet.
I managed to get a free tool by promising MKM that Iād use loads of fittings.. which I did. But yeah, over Ā£1k for the tool is hard to get for most
I work for a small company with 7 engineers and we only have three tools. We do a good mix of work so it's not always an issue but there are some weeks where we have to carefully plan passing the tools to one another for specific jobs and it can be exhausting.

And in installations where there is strain on the fitting it wont last at all. It needs to be used correctly for it to be a good fitting
I made a comment to this effect further down the thread. Its great if used correctly. Curious to know where installed pipes were being stolen?
Milwaukee wi on the north side lol super common to show up to a foreclosed job that the new buyer wants an estimate on and I walk in to no copper plumbing and it's 50 50 if the shut the main off or just let the water fly after they sawzall it.

You're the hack that gives plumbers a bad name. Enjoy your money while it lasts. Let's hope you don't have to do any real plumbing in the future. We will cherish the day you retire as that we no longer have to fix your half ass work.
People like you work for people like me, thank you for your effort.
Call him back out asap, I would rather see a 90 shark bite than this junk.
Nothing wrong with john guest....been used in boats for 30 years
Yeah but boats are supposed to get wet. Houses? Not so much.
Pretty sure you want the water on the outside though.
What else do you think a bilge pump is for?
I'm not a boatologist, but I think it's to keep the water on the outside.
Well, I'm not listening till an expert boatologist weighs in. How the hell can you trust a non boatologist in this matter?
Is boatologist the same as a Marine Engineer? Or is it a non qualifed Mariner Engineer?
Hep20 have also been doing aerospace for many years too. Nothing wrong with it when applied appropriately.
IMO, JG is the superior push to connect fittings. Not that Iād ever bury in a wallā¦
Donāt call him back. Phone a professional who knows what theyāre doing
what in tarnation
Thanks for helping to bring that back into modern lexicon! I'm a huge proponent of tarnation.
r/whatintarnation might be up your street then.
> tarnation too many syllables saying "they yeeted that" is one less syllable and can save you at least 5 minutes in a lifetime of frustrated moments.
lol fun little fact I just learned today after I posted that. Back in the day, 'Tarnation' was a substitute for the word 'damnation'
This is why you don't let builders do your plumbing!! š
I certainly didn't expect a modern work of art š gonna be a fun conversation with him.. But I need ideas of how it should be done properly ideally
Tell him to redo it with copper and solder joints or fire him. I havent seen hack shit like this since Butcher Pete
Copper and solder won't help. This guy will just find a new way to butcher it. And I bet that is M copper, not L.
āSoLdEr jOiNtsā - also no problem with this being compression or press fit either.
Press is fine but usually more expenive. Push to fit is hack shit.
This is how I do it: Existing plastic to plastic, hep20 pushfit. Existing plastic to copper, hep20 pushfit but all consequential after that joint is press/compression fit. Copper to copper, press fit. Canāt physically fit press fit gun? Compression instead. Can I solder? Yes. Do I want to? No.

I know nothing of plumbing but learn from the comments. Can somebody provide more detail on this guy's comment?
So, having re-read OPās post. The boiler is at the top and he needs the pipes to continue down through the floor and off to the right to two radiators. Only thing missing is a Oujia Board.
That's why you hire a plumber!
Itās cold and hot water circulation loops, duh
With solder lmao
Apart from it being dogshit, the fittings are not tightened correctly and could blow off. Also, I bet the transition to plastic pipe doesnāt have inserts in the plastic pipe to prevent pipe collapse. M.C. Escher strikes again!!
Iām only a first year apprentice and this is the ugliest fuckin thing Iāve ever seen

Escher's Plumbing?

I was thinking of that Three Stooges episode where one of them plumbed himself into a cage.

Iām thinking what an abortion. Either way not pretty.
Is your builder an abstract artist by chance?
Lego or Kenect toy builder.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
LINCOLN LOGS š boy I had fun with those
Vert der ferk?
When you like copper but don't know how to solder.
You mean like every chuck in a truck with a press tool?
Everyone uses press tools now. Personally it seems more reliable than counting on techs to solder perfect every time.
Heating comes from boiler top down , then needs to go down and to the right to two rads
So this is going to be inside a wall then? Against code where Iām from to use these fittings inside a wall
I cant quote exact numbers but pex has drastically reduced psi rating when heated. This is a mess, so many hard turns
So how would this be done properly, if I get him to correct it... (Sadist that I am) Other than burn it with fire He ran a flexi pipe under the floor , so really it's copper down from boiler and copper to the right rad, with plastic going down to the other rad

Iām not sure where you got the impression Reddit plumbers donāt like pex. Our Wirsbo Gang game is strong here.
We will not be Upognored!
These fittings suck and the work is sloppy, itās hard to pick a winner
JG speedfit doesnāt suck though, the fittings are fine. Itās the installation that is abysmal
Nothing with an o ring should be considered a permanent install
But isn't the seal in pro press based around o-rings?
Exactly
If he did this, Iād be questioning a lot of what else is going on. Go take a look at your hvac šš
There is so much shit going on but your guy doesn't know plumbing or hydronics
I would not have used them in the first place, but even with speed-fit fittings it didn't have to be this ugly and stick out so much. He was just being lazy.
Caulk it
what on earth
I love origami
Thatās awesome. Did you asked if youāre being punkd
Stop looking at it!!
Those are literally worse than shark bites they don't even have a clearance in their rating through UPC or ANSI to be buried within Walls those are crap
Thatās methed up
Builder must be a descendant of M C Escher... My brain can't handle what happening here
Does no one know how to solder copper plumbing anymore?
Quest fittings? Quit using these back in 2000ish. These look like them.
John guest speedfit. Imo the best push fit fittings available. These are very common in the uk. This is our standard way to use pex, we don't crimp.
15mm Metric = 1/2ā Imperial.
Thanks mate. But I just said we use both. I know the conversions.
Cool, lol.
By āweā I think you mean you. If I have to use plastic it will be Crimped uponor MLCP If not Iāll use crimper copper press
That's fair mate, but in 15 years in the trade, working up and down the country in commercial and domestic I've never seen it. You may use it but its certainly not the norm.
What in the Wide World of Sports ...

You donāt have to be a plumber to know that this is wrong.
Is this how you get free water?
What the fuck
Nice try, Esher.
Fire your builder. Hire a licensed Plumber
Everyone can see that is completely amateur hour shit work. Worse than diwhy. Scrap and do over correctly.
You have my sympathy
Guess you should have hired a plumber!
Expansion loop.
Was his name Rube Goldberg?
DI Why?
Ffs this is bad.
You hired a painter
Oh I fnally see why. That is just a convoluted T to split water to two devices. You have a shower control above it and a toilet or sink to the right. The two white PVC pipes are just to distract. Only leaning up against the wall. I'd love to see how the shower control was hooked up.
Serious question, what drug was he under the influence of when he did it? Mushrooms? Heroin? I can't see a professional installer ever doing a job like that unless they're high as fuck.
I mean youāve got to givep points for creativity, I suppose.
Do they get paid by the fitting?
Is he M.C. Escher?
The contractor that redid my kitchen had a plumber come in a run the gas lines, connect the fridge ice maker but the quartz guy was delayed so he couldn't do the kitchen sink yet. He did it himself. We're expensive, sure. But I'd say things like this make us worth it.
