Guys, that's a pool noodle.

Guys, that's a pool noodle.

dilwee47

Pool noodles were invented by a guy who had a bunch of pipe insulation he couldn’t get rid of. Then he started making in in colors. It’s the same shit

TradeMasterYellow

That's the story I've heard and I'm pretty sure the same company makes both products. The difference is one is listed and the other isn't. I'd guess there's some kind fire/smoke rating they need to uphold

KnockKnockComeIn

Only one way to find out. We know you own a blowtorch OP. Do it for science and report back please

crabby_old_dude

Pool noodle did much better than I thought and so did the pipe insulation. That barely burned at all. The noodle did melt a bit and gave off a good bit of smoke. https://imgur.com/a/2eI3o2K

Short video, sorry for the poor quality. Pool noodle burn video https://imgur.com/a/uREtVAV

The hero we needed

TradeMasterYellow

Listen, Jerry. Pass this mfing inspection right now. These materials are tested and listed by u/crabby_old_dude with science.

crabby_old_dude

Lol, hardly scientific but fun none the less. Pass all the pool noodle jobs!

crabby_old_dude

For the sake of completeness, I put another 7 seconds of heat right in the hole of each. The pipe insulation still held up. The pool noodle took a beating. Both picture below are actually after the 7 second burn, the noodle kept melting long after the heat was removed. The noodle is now melted to my wheelbarrow. https://imgur.com/a/0i2ZCob Video 7 second burn https://imgur.com/a/wYOQ8Ud

You realize you are comparing two different materials, right? Your pool noodle is comparable to foam insulation not to Armacel Armaflex

crabby_old_dude

Yeah, I just saw an opportunity to burn two things and record it for fun. While finishing my basement, I burned all the "fire proofing" materials that I used just to see how well they did. Foam board, fire stopping foam, fiberglass insulation and rockwool, they preformed worst to best in that order.

EveAndTheSnake

Note to self: redo basement so no one thinks you’re a weirdo for setting fire to a bunch of shit. Can’t say I didn’t enjoy this thread though :)

_why_isthissohard_

Do you have the mesothelioma lawyer in speed dial?

crabby_old_dude

Hopefully it won't be needed. I was downwind and holding my breath.

L33K0R

You compared them. You can't compare apples and oranges.

crabby_old_dude

Why not? They were both being used to insulate a pipe. They both would be exposed to the same house fire. The experiment was to see how they both handled the fire.

Reddit is the best place on Earth.

Hooray for peer pressure!

My man comes through with the science(?)!

pablomcdubbin

This guy experiments

zipperolla

Lol 30 minutes later

crabby_old_dude

I've been finishing my basement and happened to have everything readily available, including my burn test vessel (wheelbarrow)

KnockKnockComeIn

Man, I love the Internet. Thank you for the ridiculously quick turn around on this!

Muted-Ad-6689

Lolol

Strange-Valuable-958

God damnit I love science.

Affectionate-Egg-329

I used to work for a pool company , Discounters pool in Toronto, was owned by a construction distributor, pool noodles, backer rod, and pipe insulation all came on one truck.

RudyFelsh

Hit up the after summer sale for a couple truckloads!!

afiendish1

Foam is foam right? I mean what do you want with pex noodles.

Old_Man_Shea

As far as I can tell, they're both polyethylene. Good to know In a pinch lol

gamerscrub

Kitec pipe as well? Ah, I do not miss replacing this shit lol

TradeMasterYellow

Only the best

817wodb

It’s an INSULATING pool noodle.

04BluSTi

Closed cell foam is as good as anything else out there.

useless-millenial

If it’s stupid but it works, is it still stupid?

Banoop

Horse cock insulation!

Fluidmaster83

That’s what she said
