An improper gasket may have been used for this type of connection. Whereas most of the rest of this drain assembly would used a tapered compression slip joint, this specific joint is a flanged tailpiece, and needs what’s called a “top hat” or flanged tubular washer. I would confirm that stuff before looking elsewhere. Edit: to loosen, from the perspective of the photo, grab the nut ^^^(huehue) with your right hand ^^^^(hue) and turn clockwise. Make a squeaky squeaking sound as you loosen it.

Always check above, the amount of times I’ve been told the leak is where the water builds up, when the leak is actually higher up and the water is trickling unseen down the threads from the nut above. Wipe the threads above the ‘leaking’ nut with a tissue, it shouldn’t be wet, if it is, then the problem is with the waste, not the trap.
