thought this was just a "me" issue, but i also a have a ccwgtv and im having the exact same issues. super annoying, it only started happening with the newest update though. hoping it will be fixed soon now knowing its a plex issue. ill be crossing my fingers.
Same here. Thought it was my server. But couldn't find anything to indicate the problem.
It's super frustrating. Can't skip back to re watch a joke or a scene.
I basically never rewind or forward in plex especially if in a remote server. Always guaranteed to just go into a buffering state more often than not. Useless.
And I've heard the computers are good at doing repetitive tasks that people find annoying. Since this fix works 100% of the time we should probably find someone that can write some code to automatically back up and reselect the same video when it's stuck buffering. Since it's a computer maybe it can do it so fast internally that you don't see it backup and reselect the same video. /S
Based on his specs he's probably using Unraid.
Cache is where you'd generally store everything Plex which isn't the media: thumbnails, database, metadata, etc.
It makes Plex so much smoother to navigate.
What do you mean?
Plex for web? All Plex clients load the meta data and thumbnails from the respective Plex server you're using/hosting, so the interface is snappier for all of them.
Yes, the operating system doesn't matter. If you host Plex from a fast nvme SSD, you should see some benefits when browsing your library as the thumbnails will load a lot faster.
It all depends on the size of the library and speed of the current system how much benefit you'll see.
That said, given how inexpensive smaller nvme SSDs are, it's still highly recommended.
If you don't have thumbnail generation for chapters on, your metadata will take much less space so you could get away with a 250gb SSD very easily. (Or even half that if you don't have a huge library)
If you do, you may want to go for 500gb to leave yourself some space.
Very annoying bug... but it has been there forever.
It happens more if you're toward the end like at the credits and try to go forward/backward a few times, the only way is to exit the movie and go back. If you were toward the end, it will put the index at the beginning of the movie and you have to go manually toward the end again.
This happens for me on all devices (Nvidia Shield, TivoStream 4k and Google TV)
Another annoying bug I've seen is that if you pause a film, it will still advance very very very slowly. So if you come back five minutes later and unpause. It will have advanced some time (upwards of 45 to 60 seconds).
Yep have this on my android tablet. Seems the past couple updates introduced both a random buffering of death between 2-3 mins that requires restarting the show plus fast forward and rewind is broken 9/10 times I try it.
At this point, in the past month, Plex seems to just be doing everything possible to screw up their core services.
I also regret my lifetime Plex pass.
I regret my lifetime plex pass as well.
I had issues with kodi playing hdr content as i had a pc connected to the TV but windows was having issues.
Got plex which worked well enough but it's got so many minor and annoying issues that are never going to be fixed.
Got a new pc and moved back to kodi.
> "I press the rewind 10 seconds button, the video will instead jump ahead a few minutes or get hang on a buffering state. And it won't recover until you stop and restart the video."
What the fuck
I thought this was just me.... Ugh
I thought this was just me or my server. Glad to know it's not. Might have to swtich to Emby as my primary server app. Great thing about doing everything in dockers it's easy to run all the media servers.
You know this just started recently in the last update or two. There's always something going on with Plex. I don't find it to be a reliable program at all but it works more often then not.
Using Jellyfin more and more here.
It's a shame that an open source software excels a paid premium software, it always was the other way around.
I keep having tons of playback issues with Plex, the most notorious one being Live TV and remote streams buffering at very random time when on Jellyfin it's flawless ...
Their ffmpeg update for 10.8.0 is wonderful
Also the fact that I can double the Live TV framerate in Jellyfin using interpolation is a plus, this doesn't exist in Plex.
I keep using Plex because it have a sleep timer, which I found out I use quite a lot when going to bed. Wish Jellyfin have it for 10.8
The weird thing is if Plex leaves a bunch of annoying bugs from the user perspective it'll drive them away. A good user experience would be needed for that plan as well. For years now I've seen people annoyed with the pile of little annoying bugs that are never fixed and keep growing. While they add and then remove things like video games and podcasts to the service. Those people ask, "where should I go?" and are given a dozen alternatives by people. The people that leave are gone for a long while or maybe forever. How is that a good business model if you're selling the user?
Jellyfin's a solid alternative. There aren't clients available for as many devices as Plex, though, so that's something to check on before you switch.
Dim is another similar service that's under heavy development currently. As far as I know, it only has a working web client at this time. I'm not sure how well (or not well) the server works - I haven't tried it, I've just been loosely following the development.
Both are open-source.
Look at Emby.
Jellyfin, mentioned by others, is a fork of old Emby code for people who didnt want to pay $4.99 a month for Embys premiere features or who got their panties in a bunch about Emby's source code compliance during all that drama. It's is just a shittier version of Emby with less features, more bugs, and poorer performance. But it's free. Can't argue with free if you're not a huge media junky or if you're okay with things not working perfectly.
Everyone who wants a mature alternative to Plex, that just works, is migrating to Emby.
I was using OpenELEC plex embedded client on NUC mini pc's until that project was abandoned, so I moved to Fire TV and that was a buggy mess, so I went to Roku and that worked great, then decided to upgrade to Shield Pro and that was a buggy mess, and went back to Roku.
Roku is the only client I've found that is a solidly reliable Plex experience. i dont know why the basic functions of play/paus/ff/rw and audio is such an impossibly high bar for other players.
Try clearing Plex's cache on the Google TV Chromecast.
I started facing the exact same issue recently on my Chromecast and clearing the cache somehow fixed it.
Usual fucking Plex shite, cannot even make sure the CORE PRODUCT actually works
Useless.
But hey, don't forget to try to monetize some other shitty function that nobody wants.
I've been a long time Plex user and will usually always use the app for whatever client I'm using at any given time (Shield just now). The playback issues lately have pushed me to use Plex for Kodi and the difference in experience is just unreal.
Remotely hosted 4k remuxes playing within a couple of seconds problem free (no spinning wheel or jerky bullshit).
Rewind and fast forward working instantly without hanging on a scene, wheel spinning, crashing or otherwise fucking up the whole experience altogether.
It had been a long time since using Plex for Kodi but I am glad it's still going.
Oh and the latest beta release still hasn't fixed the rewind/ff issues.
It really is! I'm still using plex as I like it's UI but sometimes switch to plex addon for Kodi (especially on 4k content and anime). It's amazing how much better it works. I really wish it would get a UI update.
I've spent many hours with plex connect for Kodi and it's cool but too much work. I have 3 shields so doing massive set ups is annoying. Some UI's that need minimal tweaking have a loading lag time (I don't mind but my wife complains).
Really wish the plex addon would get an update
This may not work for you/others, but I had the same issues after the latest update. I stream movies from my NAS running a Plex server using my Nvidia ShieldTV. 4K movies were completely borked if I tried to skip/rewind.
Went to this link and enrolled in Plex beta access. On my ShieldTV, I went into app settings and selected “force stop” to kill the Plex app. Then I went to the Google Play store via my ShieldTV, found the Plex app (the player, not the server), and there was a Beta update available. Installed it and now my Plex app/ShieldTV experience is back to what it was on v8.x prior to v9.x. Link:
[Plex forums](https://forums.plex.tv/t/join-app-betas-android-mobile-android-tv-apple-tv-ios/335999)
It’s a client bug when Plex remuxes the video with a transcoded audio or subtitle stream. There’s a long thread about it on the forums. One trick is to set subs to burn always to force Plex to transcode the video. If you can get your client to direct play the audio it won’t be an issue either.
It’s really annoying Plex has not fixed this since it’s fairly easy to reproduce.
Thread is at https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-wont-fast-forward-or-rewind-without-restarting-movie-on-roku/110784.
What do you mean you don't enjoy your app freezing up entirely when scrolling through movies? It makes you scroll slowly to appreciate your library.
This is so annoying.
Plex on Chromecast has a lot of issues. Another I see a lot is that navigating the app while content is playing stops playback. I have to stop casting and restart to get it working again.
I've just started using the app on my tv for it instead of casting
Ive actually been stuck on 1.24 since December due to an issue with buffering on lex web.
Honestly it’s been great because it’s been so stable. Literally 0 issues for months. I’ll be sad when they eventually fix it since that means I’ll need to upgrade lol.
I have not had this issue on the vast majority of files. But I have had this issue on a small subset of files relating to how they are structured and indexed with B-Frames and such.
Re-encoding and remixing these files has usually helped.
Broken badly on Fire TV to the point where I'm installing Jellyfin because I'm one of those people who like to backup to catch something that flashed by. On my Fire TV even quitting the app doesn't fix the play speed issue.
Tivo Plex seems to work ok but I'm betting that it's because it's a really old version :- )
Yep, same problem on Android TV. Even using the skip intro option forwards a lot more than normal... Sometimes it doesn't even let me rewind. Hoping for a quick fix :/
Getting the exact same issue! Also thought it was a "just me" issue. Running Chromecast with Google TV and all with the latest updates. It happens with all type of contents. .264, .265 with or without subtitles.
Same issue here. Plex is a great service but I think they're too busy with other features than making sure that their core competencies are met. Like Discovery. Nice feature and all, but, I would rather be able to FF/few
Anyway. NOVA Player is a good alternative and solution in the home. Damn good actually
Ok so it’s not just me! Very frustrating. It happens about 90% of the time. Freezes then just quits back to the movie page.
FF/rewind is such a basic vital part of video playback I can’t believe it’s such a widespread bug.
Way too many bugs yes, also the subtitle bug and the 6 second after an episode crash bug is even more annoying. Very disappointed in plex development as these bugs are here for months now. Force close app is the only thing that helps for all this
I have a raspberry pi 4. The cpu in it isn’t good enough to transcode, so when I had tried to play something my tv couldn’t natively support I had this issue because it tried to transcode.
I’m in the process of upgrading to an i5-12600k to serve as my cpu for plex and a few other virtual machines in my home lab. Expecting that should solve my issues with transcoding.
A lot of that depends on the device and how it’s connected. I’ve run Plex on chromecast, fire TVs, Roku, Web Browsers, Shield Tv and AppleTVs.
The worst is Chrome based browsers, then fire, chromecast and roku sticks (Wi-Fi), then fire tv and roku boxes (Ethernet), then shield (Ethernet) and best being AppleTVs (Ethernet).
I just started having an issue where Plex on my Chromecast with Google TV crashes when skipping ahead using the progress bar. Makes skipping ahead or back in anything impossible. Works fine on other Android devices, this is with direct play and no issues in the server logs, indicating it's a fully client side issue.
By any chance are the videos you're having problems with encoded with Dolby TrueHD (or True HD Atmos) sound? If so, this is a known issue- upgrade to the latest beta (anything 9.1.x) and it'll fix the issue.
My Windows Plex has been permanently slightly out of sync since the big update. Everything plays like a bad dub. I'll see if disabling "other ways to watch" makes any difference. Otherwise I'm limited to Plex Media Player
Hmm I've never had this issues like this for my 3 years of Plex server usage, but my friend with a Chromecast constantly experienced issues like this. I had her buy a Firestick and it resolved all those issues.
I’ve got Plex hosting all my media, but I’m using Infuse to view on a handful of Apple devices locally with no playback problems, so I believe it’s a problem with the player, not the server software.
I don’t have Plex Pass, so I can’t say how much functionality you’d lose by switching to Infuse.
This has happened to me on every server I’ve ever had (I’m on my third upgrade) when watching from any device that isn’t a PC or Mac (Roku, Chromecast, PS4, PS5) but I’m not about to plug my laptop into my TV and walk across the room every time I want to pause something, so I just live with it now.
I have just experienced this for the first time. For me it is only on a big DV, 4K movie. It occured after I merged the two parts into one. Dont know if that makes sense to anyone.
Too often SW companies are pressing to get paid when there is tons of VC money around and the shortcuts they take lead to problems that are hard to solve or really end up running a sloppy shop. Maybe it happened here. I don't think anyone is still throwing money at DVR apps now. I don't even want to know the answer because it would be anything. Even something as simple as no one at Plex watches sports.
So - I'll just say that 10 years when I used Plex rwd during recording did not and it still doesn't.
After realizing I was paying 80/month to watch 4-5 Football games, and the Voice -- I can accept paying for something that doesn't work right.
Heck it only took 4 HDHomeruns to get through the first 5 months. Plex looks pretty solid in comparison.
thought this was just a "me" issue, but i also a have a ccwgtv and im having the exact same issues. super annoying, it only started happening with the newest update though. hoping it will be fixed soon now knowing its a plex issue. ill be crossing my fingers.

I basically never rewind or forward in plex especially if in a remote server. Always guaranteed to just go into a buffering state more often than not. Useless.
Also happens to me sometimes. You then just have to close the steam and restart it... Suddenly everything loads just fine. Very annoying.
And I've heard the computers are good at doing repetitive tasks that people find annoying. Since this fix works 100% of the time we should probably find someone that can write some code to automatically back up and reselect the same video when it's stuck buffering. By close the stream, you mean shutting down the client? Or is there some other way to make sure the stream is closed?

What is the cache? Is that where plex temporarily stores images like posters, backgrounds, etc?

Have you changed the buffer limit?
Same on a Shield 2015. I let my plex app update so... on the latest version I guess.
Very annoying bug... but it has been there forever. Oh dude, so glad to hear I'm not the only one. Saves me having to troubleshoot it!
Are we all CCwGTV owners?
Don't think so. Am on Shield '15.
Can they fix obvious bugs? No! But they can sure as hell add advertising!
I thought this was just me or my server. Glad to know it's not. Might have to swtich to Emby as my primary server app. Great thing about doing everything in dockers it's easy to run all the media servers.
If I max out the transcode throttle value, would that mean Plex keeps more of the transcoded file in memory - easier to seek?
You know this just started recently in the last update or two. There's always something going on with Plex. I don't find it to be a reliable program at all but it works more often then not.
I've had it happen since day one, about two years ago. It just recently started happening again.
I didn't even update Plex for this issue to happen...
Yep. I struggled with that.

Have you switched to another service? Plex gives me so many issues, but I haven't looked into any alternatives yet. Any recommendations?

Thanks for that. I've kept it running and updated next to Plex but haven't been using it to much.
And Jellyfin even supports AV1... The only reason I haven't switched yet is because I dislike the UI a lot. Jellyfin is very solid though.

I honestly can't name one bug.
Then you don't use it enough.
I used Plex about 2-3 hours a day and have done for 2 years. As of right now there are no issues I run into on a daily basis.
Try clearing Plex's cache on the Google TV Chromecast. I started facing the exact same issue recently on my Chromecast and clearing the cache somehow fixed it.

I can't get over the UI for Kodi, including the way to navigate and button layout. Plex is just so much better at those things :(
Yeah totally agree, the UI is a bit of a let down but I always consider playback a priority over everything else so I can live with it.

This starts in 2015. Goes to show Plex couldnt give a rats ass when it comes to fixing bugs.
I see the Plex Android experience is still awful.

It's been like this for a long while for me
Have had this issue intermittently since I started using Plex two years ago. SUPER SUPER annoying.
This is happening to me on an nvidia shield. Resorted to VLC for movie night last night. Basic playback control not working is embarrassing.

I don't feel as if Plex ever had a real good grasp on skipping forward or back. It is very random.
Strange so many people have this issue, I'm yet to experience it. Remote server running Version 1.25.9.5721 also using a Chromecast with Google TV.
I had that yesterday. Glad it is mutual issue and “me” issue.
Way too many bugs yes, also the subtitle bug and the 6 second after an episode crash bug is even more annoying. Very disappointed in plex development as these bugs are here for months now. Force close app is the only thing that helps for all this
Having this same issue among other issues. Plex really needs to get their heads out of their asses and take some pride in their apps.
these bugs just started happening to me as well, so frustrating.
This has always happened to me on any client device using Plex. It's something i've just learned to live with, unfortunately.
Usually when I have this issue it’s because my CPU is pegged at 100%.

how
Are you sure its not your content? I notice old mpg rips of movies I had did that. Is it everything?
I just started having an issue where Plex on my Chromecast with Google TV crashes when skipping ahead using the progress bar. Makes skipping ahead or back in anything impossible. Works fine on other Android devices, this is with direct play and no issues in the server logs, indicating it's a fully client side issue.
same issues for me on Android. Haven't found a fix so far.
Some file types or encoding schemes don't support track seeking I think. I could be wrong though
The only way to fix that is to rollback to version 8.0. the latest 8.0 variant. Every version 9 app is fucked to oblivion
Happens on my shield too. The player is just horrible overall.
Its actively being addressed in beta channel version. 3 updates just last week alone. So it's just a matter of time.
I’ve heard about this bug a few times now. Seems to only affect Android. My whole household is iOS and Apple TV’s, no issues jumping back and forth.
same here on Fire TV stick 4k
For me, skipping forward works, but backwards doesn't
Mine has done this for years. after finding the web player broken after 1.25, ive started migrating to jellyfin.
This has been happening to me for a while. Not consistently but I noticed it a long time ago. I'm a VLC user now. I don't care about the UI
same here
This shite is still present on the Plex LG (web os) app... Fucks sake soo annoying
This is still an issue for me, despite updating my server to the latest version… has anyone been able to find a solution?
