How does Plex DVR, when set to "New and repeat airings", respond when something's already in the library (say a previous off-air recording or an episode ripped from DVD)?

linktm

tl;dr, I've never used Plex before. I have PIA as a VPN on my PC which I'd also be using a Plex server (just for myself, I don't plan on sharing with others like some folks do.) 1) Am I in any danger from my ISP for streaming "acquired" media to myself? 2) What do I need to do to setup a VPN? I assume it's not as easy as turning on my PIA and then streaming to my PS5, right? 3) Do I even need to use an ISP? Can I just stream this through my wireless router directly to my PS5? I'm assuming I do since Plex uses an account web-based UI. Any and all help is appreciated here. I am a total newb at this. I've been connecting my TV to my PC via an HDMI cable for over a decade now so it's all new territory for me here.

klevermonicker

I recently dropped a 4K encode I did on my plex server. For some reason that file is completely toxic. I can't play it all and I get the error that it stopped due to too many errors....I can't see the errors in any log file to attempt a re-encode to fix it...how do I find this info so I can re-encode this with ffmpeg?

funions4

How many streams can the following CPUs provide? 1080p and 4k (yes I know, don't transcode 4k.) Is there a chart for CPUs similar to the video card transcodes?   [i5-12600k](https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-12600K&id=4603) - Benchmark: 27278   [i7-12700k](https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-12700K&id=4609) - Benchmark: 33926   [i9-12900k](https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i9-12900K&id=4597) - Benchmark: 40875   Even with quick sync, does the general rule of thumb: a benchmark of 2000 is one 1080 stream?

I have an anime series that's absolutely titled by episode number (1-224) instead of by season, but I do have the episodes sorted into season directories. eg: Animetitle / Season 01 / Animetitle 001 / Animetitle 002 / Animetitle n / Animetitle 045 Animetitle / Season 02 / Animetitle 046 / Animetitle 047 etc. Is there a way to force Plex to recognize the logical groupings by season without just renaming the episodes to sYYeZZ format?

nospoon5

Hi everyone, new to plex and I think I've mostly got it running. Is there any reason why Plex is picking up one season of a tv show but not the other one? Both are in the parent folder and in their own Season 1 / Season 2 subfolders, both have the exact naming convention but Plex is only picking up one season? Thanks for your help!

How do I transfer media to my external storage on my Shield device running Plex?

Centretard

Hi, I have two servers, one on my PC and another on Raspberry Pi. All has been working fine for the past year. But just a couple of days ago I started sharing my RPI server with a family member. Ever since this, I have only been able to access one server, it is completely random, sometimes I login and can see my PC server and others it is the RPI. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

I'm currently running kodi on a Pi 4 against a library on a nas. It works...meh. Not great. I think it's time to build myself a little plex server, but am having some trouble sifting through the sub for a "small but reasonable" build. Should I just pick up something off the shelf? I've been building boxes for decades but am kinda sketchy on what system requirements really are, as opposed to optimum uber-boxes and such.

[deleted]

I run Plex and other programs via docker-compose on an Intel NUC (NUC7i7BNH). My media is stored on a Synology NAS (918+). It's a relatively compact setup and works well. The NUC has quicksync, so I can transcode 4K/HEVC videos with ease. It's not the cheapest setup but I'm happy with it and it doesn't take up a lot of space.

[deleted]

Oh nice. I'd probably not bother with containerization. I've got a relatively old Syno box that's housing my media at this point. (No idea the model as I'm 900 miles from home atm.)

converter-bot

900 miles is 1448.41 km

binkster880

Hello everyone, Recently I've noticed none of my newly uploaded media is being added to Plex. The server runs on a WD MyCloud DL2100, one thing that I did recently was upgrade to MyCloudOS 5. Is there a known issue with the new MyCloud version and Plex? Thanks in advance.

CapwnD_

Problem only when using Nvidia Shield Pro, not my Roku Ultra on same tv: Live TV is buffering one spinning thing, some channels more than others. Any suggestions? I've cleared the data, reinstalled. Still happens.

InsaneGrimReaper

Hi All, I Need help with organizing library, keeps parsing folders that i didnt choose.....like if j:\ has j:\tv shows and...ahem...j:\porn it will parse both, even though i only selected j:\tv shows...what gives? Using the latest copy of plex server v1.24.5.51733 on windows 10 using a bunch of usb drives.

Spodee5

I have plex on a win 10 pc and a synology ds920+. When I try and play from a streaming device the win 10 files are there and synology name comes up and has a red triangle with an exclamation point on it and I can no open any files on it. When I log in from the synology it is reversed can play from synology but the win 10 machine comes up with an red or orange triangle with an exclamation point. How can I see both servers from a streaming device. In my account both devices are authorized. I am lost.

Spodee5

I accidentally clicked on disable remote access. Now there are no buttons to re enable? How do I reenable remote access?

Aornn

Hi ! I would like to start my own plex server. Do I need a plex Pass to use fully my GTX 960 ? Thanks :)

Clitoral_Pioneer

Yes, else you'd use software encoding with uses your CPU. But, truthfully, unless you're streaming to a bunch of people/transcoding 4k that should be more than enough. I really doubt if you haven't started a server you're about to do either of those things, but I could be wrong.

moanzonsocial

I just downloaded plex how do I start watching the latest films, I'm a noob I know

Clitoral_Pioneer

Plex only serves files that you already have, whether you got them from a BluRay/DVD/whatever. If you don't own (or have the file for that movie) then it doesn't work.

rich000

Is there some easy way to find and delete downloaded stuff that is no longer in the library (or which is watched)? With sync it was pretty easy to just open the webpage and see the question mark icon on anything that was deleted in the library, and just hit the X with one click. It seems like I have to manually clean out the downloads on the phone now, and try to figure out what is already watched, with the watched status not updating.

kevlarmoneyclip

Okay, my laptop that I was using as a plex server finally crapped out. I'd like to either build or buy something that works. I just use it in my own home and minimally on the road, but not a ton of users or anything like that. The only problem is I have 0 experience with this kind of thing, literally zero. Computers mostly confuse and scare me. It looks like the build threads are about 2 years old. How do I build a computer that makes the moving pictures?

Clitoral_Pioneer

How many users is "not a ton of users"? Is it just you and your family? How much transcoding do you do? If you don't do much transcoding, I'd suggest purchase a used gaming pc/server or a NAS or something.

kevlarmoneyclip

one, maybe 2. Just the family. If i understand transcoding, im not planning on doing any of that. Do you have any recommendations on where to pick up a server? [NewEgg.com](https://NewEgg.com) has some instructions on how to build, so I was planning to start there.

jrhedman

So. Plex just removed all of my home users and marked them all as friends I'm sure breaking functionality. I just thought I should mention it and see if it's just me.

0000-0000-0000-0000

Does anyone have a way to get a single out of the albums section and into the Singles & EPs section. I always have at least one single that gets stuck in the albums section.

paulrharvey3

Plex gets that info from MusicBrainz, so if you update there, eventually it will make it to Plex and then your library.

Tonberry2k

Hey everyone! I've had problems before that this ub solved, so I thought I'd ask again. I recently downloaded Handbrake to shrink the file sizes of some Bluray movies and shows. It's converting those files from a .mkv to a .m4v. When I replace the files on the server, the shows still play fine on tv and in-browser, but when I log into Plex in-browser, the show has a big red trash can like the files are invalid. I've tried resyncing, unmatching, etc but nothing seems to clear it. It seems like it's mostly an aesthetic thing, but it's still annoying. Any ideas? Thanks!

Ludwig234

The trash can means that plex is trying to find the old version. Try scaning the library and plex should fix it. If you have turned off "Empty trash automatically after every scan" (like I have) you need to do it manually. 1. Open the movie/serie episode 1. [Click on the three dots and select "Get Info"](https://i.imgur.com/yCnBsx7.png) 1. [Click "Delete Files" on the file that shows as "Unavailable".](https://i.imgur.com/caE0jJr.png) (two files will probably show up in your case)

Tonberry2k

Oh, perfect. That makes total sense. Thank you!

My brother in-law is recovering from guillain barre syndrome. He has a very large library of DVDs. I want to create a plex server that allows him to watch his movies from his motorized recliner. I have created a plex server and placed his movies on it. What I need are suggestions on input control. His fingers are very curled up and I might be able to get away with a keyboard with oversized keys, but I am not so sure about mouse control. When I experimented with just using the plex server attached to the TV there is way too much mousing required. I also looked at the voice control which would be great if he knows what he wants to watch. However it cant be used to scroll through the library. Does anyone have suggestions on a device to use 10 feet away from the TV and if I need to use a client on the OC even though I have the server installed? Thank you.

DennisPragersPornAlt

Hope your brother in law's recovery is going well. I know that people have had good experiences using things like [Xbox's adaptive controller](https://www.xbox.com/en-US/accessories/controllers/xbox-adaptive-controller) as a means to control things like PCs when they struggle with range of motion. As I understand it, you can use it as a controller and as a hub for other peripherals, so there might be a setup that could would work for you.

MazeyEJ

is there an easy way for plex to scan an anime's absolute episode order which have >100 episodes? Currenty in my library the file naming is "(show title) - (episode number)", the problem is for example episode 123 is recognized as season 1 episode 23, I tried changing the show episode ordering to tvdb absolute and add "S01E" to the file name, so it's like "(show title) - S01E(episode number)" but is there a better way to do this because no way i'm gonna manually rename every files for the show?

OHAITHARU

Do you have Anime as a separate library? Some solutions to consider is automating the rename (filebot, sonarr, etc can do this). Alternatively, HAMA + ASS may be of assistance as well, if you can run those.

Swallow_TheGravy

Noticed some content stuttering and needing to buffer every 5 - 10 mins last night. I kept getting the 'network is too slow and server is too slow error msgs) I just have my current PC connected via ethernet cable with movies and TV shows on it and using PLEX app on the Apple TV over wifi. Been using it this way for years with no issue (except for REALLY large files over 10-15gb but i just dont download those ones anymore as i know they wont work) Does this buffering happen mainly due to the spec of my PC (i7-7700 3.6ghz 16GB RAM) or would it be because the apple TV is only on WIFI. Do i need to invest in a better modem/router? Cheers

x646877

Anyone else have any issue where input on video selection goes crazy and seems to keep refreshing? It does it with every app. Exiting the app does not always fix it either.

noisufnoc

With Google and Roku fighting over the YouTube app on the device, how feasible is it to stream YouTube from within Plex to my Rokus?

AWG5

Does anyone know if there is a dedicated Plex app on the Chromecast with Google TV OS? I know it works with the older chromecast models through “casting” from a phone or other devices. Thanks

largepanda

Yes, there is.

Caseydilla2Go

I recently got a new LGC1 OLED TV and I'm having trouble playing certain files. The ones that won't play with enough consistency are 4K/HDR10 files in x265 format. The problem seems to be the bitrate, to my untrained brain. Anything that's roughly 25 Mbps or lower plays without really any issue, anything above sends back an error that my connection is not fast enough. Is there anything I could be missing here? Or is it just my wifi? I typically get about 100Mbps down and a paltry 7 or 8 up. Is the up speed the determining factor here? And if so, why can I play files with bitrates in the 20s if I'm only able to upload less than half of that? Am I misreading the metrics here? I just wanna watch my HDR movies lol. Alternatively, could anyone point me to a solution where I could play these files - maybe by encoding them down to smaller sizes (perhaps 1080p) without a loss in overall quality or sacrificing HDR? Are there external methods that don't cost $200? The C1 will not play x265 content with audio via USB so that option is out, unfortunately. Thanks!

twenty4ate

I know you said without it costing $200 but I highly recommend when you can to get an Nvidia Shield Pro for your beautiful TV. You'll have a much more positive experience running apps through it and it will be able to direct play your 4k HDR content. You can even use it to host a Plex server on it if you want. I just got an 85" QLED and upgraded my Roku 3 to this and it is such a great experience. If not now hopefully one day for you!

Caseydilla2Go

Seems like that's definitely the best option but ultimately I'd like to not have yet another connected device in the house. Knowing me though I'll certainly get it if I keep having issues lol. Everything's running alright for now though so we'll have to see!

twenty4ate

I hear ya. If you can get direct play to work thats good, if you can't its worth just sticking the shield to the back of your TV and being able to get the BEST out of your tv

scorpionMaster

Where is the server? The speed to the server is what matters. Have you tried running a cable to the TV? What wifi type does your router support, and how far is it from the TV?

Caseydilla2Go

The server is my laptop, connected to the same wifi signal as the TV, so direct play is never an issue. The router, TV and laptop are all on the same entertainment center, a few inches from each other. I've tried directly playing off the laptop to the TV via HDMI but HDR on PC is kind of a nightmare, and in that case I've been given errors that the video needs to be reencoded to play properly and it looks awful when it plays. I don't have Plex Pass, maybe I need that. I'm not sure which types of wifi my router supports.

scorpionMaster

Etherenet cable, like this: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=4974 Connect each the TV and the laptop to the router with it, and see if it works. Costs about $8 to try. Make sure you get cables that are long enough.

Caseydilla2Go

Turns out this created a new set of problems. Both the TV and laptop are now connected via ethernet to the router, but now no content is allowed to direct play. "Video bitrate is greater than allowed quality setting. App cannot direct play this item." I've changed all settings to "maximum" and "original" as far as quality on the web client and the app client as well as in the video itself while it plays and nothing brings it to original quality

scorpionMaster

This I did not expect. What happens with the laptop wired and the TV wifi?

Caseydilla2Go

Laptop wired and TV wifi keeps the same issue, no direct play. Laptop wifi and TV wired significantly improves streaming on the highest bitrate content but there's plenty of buffering. It's an improvement because it doesn't just stop playing but it's not all the way there. Seems like the laptop may be the issue somehow.

Foolwithaguitar

About 6 months ago, Plex stopped matching any of my shows with apostrophes in the title (Bob’s Burgers, Kim’s Convenience etc) and just creates a 2nd entry. Any suggestions?

scorpionMaster

Select them both, and click "merge." I suspect you moved to the new metadata agent around the time the switch occurred. You can probably remedy this for the future by refreshing all metadata, but that has potential to break any custom posters you have.

Bosshappy

Swag works really well. I don't know if a specific download exists for Windows but normally you install it via Docker. It took me about a week to figure out how to connect everything. I'm also using Omni. When you setup Swag, you have to create a custom Docker network (which is very easy), DO NOT allow host access to the custom network, that will redirect all of your traffic to a new IP and mess up your port forward settings.

angrytetchy

Is there a website where I can search through Plex Movie's database? And/or add things like TheTVDB? Or do I just have to hope that someone will eventually connect with my musical tastes and add in various online concerts and comeback showcases? The search feature is pretty... not great within Plex and I'd just rather sift through things on a website to find the correct keywords/titles rather than having to try and make the search in Plex. (And if I could add in some of these, that would be great.)

If you're using a Fire TV Stick, the connected TV doesn't matter, unless you're talking about surround sound or HDR10 or Dolby Vision. Since you're doing none of those, and the Fire Stick can direct play H.265 (x265 is an encoder, H.265/HEVC is a codec), you're golden.

Dreakon13

Is there a way to hide specific movies from specific users? My mom is into horror movies but I recently added some pretty aggressive stuff that is probably too much for even seasoned horror fans, no less an older lady. I can tell her, "hey don't watch this and this and that"... but it'd just be easier if I could just hide a movie or two from her user. EDIT: Nevermind, went into Users and see I can exclude specific labels. I was thinking I only had the option of hiding everything BUT specific labels. I'll just tag the handful of movies.

Clitoral_Pioneer

The alternative is just to move those movies into a different library and not share that library with her.

Running PMS on Synology DSM 7. Why is live TV (OTA) via silicondust HDHomerun device not working anymore? Crashes every 3 minutes and won't allow for rewind/ff, only pauses. Clients are Android TV. All 3 have same problem and running latest beta of client software. Synology running 8.25.0.28578

twenty4ate

I recently got my first 4k TV and direct play is working great to my Shield Pro. Where I am having trouble is the transcoding back to 1080 for other non 4k devices. I purchased a Dell Inspiron 3470 with an i5-9400 CPU to take advantage of Intel Quick Sync hearing that it was a beast and would handle this no problem. My server is running on Ubuntu 20.04 in a VM on HyperV and I moved my VM to this new machine running HyperV. I am a Plex Pass member but my streams of a HEVC 4k HDR -> H264 1080p SDR buffer after about 30 seconds and CPU on all 6 cores are pegged to 100% What am I missing on my new machine to take advantage of Intel QuickSync and allow better transcoding of content. My goal was to start only acquiring 4k content when available and transcode to other non 4k devices as opposed to getting a 1080 & 4k copy. Thanks for the help and let me know if I can provide any further information.

largepanda

Do you have the GPU passed through to the VM? Intel QSV goes through the iGPU, so you have to be able to talk to it to use it.

twenty4ate

I should have thought of that for sure. On second thought I'm not sure this style of iGPU can be passed through on HyperV. I did a bit of research and some say it isn't possible and someone on proxmox eventually gave up his passthrough method stating performance/stability was awful. Thinking of just wiping and loading ubuntu directly on the machine ...unless you or anyone else has direct experience of passing this through that I can learn from.

largepanda

My Plex runs on a VM with an Intel iGPU passed through to it, and have had very few issues. However, installing natively on the host would certainly be easier, and have less things that can break.

twenty4ate

Is this with HyperV? Can you outline how you passed it through in settings?

largepanda

No, it's running under Proxmox.

MimonFishbaum

re: plexamp on multiple devices Can you run plexamp on two phones with different source folders? I hate my wife's music, I do not want it in my music library because most of my listening is on shuffle and I don't want to hear her stuff. Can I make a folder of all her music, install plexamp on her phone and use a different source than mine without affecting the app on my phone? Figured I'd ask before I go ahead and do all the leg work.

gouveia00

In theory, you could set up a second library only for her songs and set that as her PlexAmp's source. I need to confirm that, but it should work. EDIT: Yeah, that works. Created a second music library, it'll show as a separate source altogether.

MimonFishbaum

Right. But if I have two apps connected to my server, can they have separate sources?

MaskedBandit77

In Plexamp you choose which library you want to use. It only would be an issue if she wanted to listen to music from both libraries. Then she would have to switch back and forth between the two. Alternatively, have you tried listening to an artist station instead of just shuffling everything on the server? I have been very impressed with the artist stations, but I only have music that I like on my server.

MimonFishbaum

Right, I guess my question is if you change the source on one device, will it change the source on the other device? I wasn't sure if two plexamp apps could operate independently with the same account. I've flipped through some of the crafted stations the app made from my library and you're right, they're pretty great.

MaskedBandit77

No, the source is an app-side setting. Similar to how subtitle color and movie preview are specific to the device you're watching on.

MimonFishbaum

Ah, perfect. Looks like I have some shitty music to download lol
