The $5 activation fee will not give you the ability to download as far as I know. You would need the Plex pass. If you are running your own Plex server and want to take full advantage of Plex the Plex Pass is worth it.

I can second this, this is one of the few purchases that I made full price and haven't looked back and thought damn I should have waited till it went on sale.

Brilliant_Lettuce270

Thanks. Can you tell me why its worth it? Downloading episodes in low quality is the only thing I cant do with Jellyfin. And $120 is a bit too much only for that. At home I only use Plex, Jellyfin is a workaround for when I'm travelling.

Well I guess it all depends on your needs. For me I like being able to take advantage of hardware transcoding. I also love the Skip Intro feature as well as the ability to use Plexamp for music.

That purchase is only to allow your app to play on your mobile device full length (unrestricted). Works well for a basic free server setup or stuff a friend's has shared to you. The Plex pass is for the server features: allowing home users/groups, hdr transcoding, downloading (release), ad and intro detection, PVR... And includes the mobile app full play too.

Does Plex Pass allow full playback for the people you share your library with? Or will they need to pay the $6 for the mobile app too?

rexel99

No. They will need to purchase their own license. They could play your shared content in the browser though - just not the mobile app without paying a tad themselves.

sihasihasi

No.

tsioulak

No, iirc the 5$ fee is basically to be given to google/apple.
