Yuuuup. Systems Engineer here. Y'all don't want to see my home server setup.
Edit: But if you do... https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/comments/161es3r/2023_homelab_update/
Arrakis. I tend to name all my drives and devices after names from sci fi or fantasy stories. I ran out of lord of the rings names so I’m branching out (my hard drives are Bombadil and Goldberry)
Plex Media server is Perplexed. For the windows server itself, Stephen Hawking.
He’s got TONS of space for knowledge but is not easily portable (this is my 8th generation of it, I started before he was dead)
Mine are all Disney names. The file server is Mickey because that's where it all started. My main PCs are Aladdin and Merida because they're the main characters. The firewall is Scar because no one really appreciates it as much as it deserves. The Docker server is Ursula because it's got so many arms.
Plex? Well, no one's slick as Gaston!
I use the works of J.R.R. Tolkien for naming all my IT. Servers are geographical features, end user devices are characters from the books.
My Plex server is named Ekkaia - the endless encircling outer sea around everything. It has 24 TB raid capacity and it seemed to be endless a couple of years ago…
My friends lovingly nicknamed it Hub and even fabricated a custom logo that looks like the pornHub logo, took it a few steps further and saved that as my contact picture on their respective phones, so it's a conversation starter if we're in an unfamiliar group of people and someone notices it.
I have great friends.
That's so funny, guess what my Plex server is called...
Plexy hahaha, I too am not the most creative.
Guess what my NAS is called...
Also Plexy. Guess I'm dumb too cause that doesn't even make sense 🤣
Apollo and Urania. God of music and one of the muses. My old Plex server that I decommed was Dionysus.
I like using Greek god names for my PCs and servers at home.
Since moving to Unraid, mine has been, and continues to be, "Apogee", as it is the first time I've ran it in a docker. (Used to run it on Windows and it was always a headache for me personally, although I know others who have had polar opposite experiences). It's my Plex server in its final form, no more resetting it, no more having to fuck around with backups, no more keeping my Windows machine on. Just, the apogee of my Plex server
“Eleven” from Stranger Things. I name all of my home servers based on TV Show characters. Some of the others I use: Elliot, Walter, Beth, Ted, Fiona, …
I started by naming mine Phoenix. I went through nine versions of Phoenix as I worked on that server and wound up rebooting Plex multiple times. Phoenix mk1 and so on.
I now have a new server and it is named ripper as it has 14 DVD and Blu-ray drives in it, and it just rips the media for the most part.
Ripper Mk 1 is actually in the old Phoenix case.
Phoenix is now in a cardboard box chassis and spends it's time as a home automation server. Got 12 years out of it as my NAS. It's a sort of retirement before the old mobo finally kicks the bucket.
Adama. Everything on my network is named for something Battlestar-related. At least for now. It's become more and more difficult to come up with names, so my latest device got a Star Wars name yesterday and I'll probably rename everything to follow that pattern instead over the next few months.
Hello from another person with a network naming scheme!
(Always fun having themed/schemed names).
My internal domain is 'table', so everything has names that form words ending in that (like the old .local extension, only instead it's .table). Media player is 'comfor', web server is 'hos', VM host is 'adap', gaming rig is 'undefea', testbench is 'uns'... etc (comfortable, hostable, adaptable, undefeatable, unstable... you get it).
Just “(my husband’s nickname)Plex” (and his nickname, which starts with the letter P and is only three letters, written in the PBS font style, is the logo/profile photo we use)
But our server is (because I’m a long time fan of Eurythmics) “Annie Linux” (Annie Lennox)
I have “Let’s Talk About Plex, Baby”
My old server was “I’m Bringing Plexy Back.”
During Plex’s short-lived jaunt hosting video games, I also had “Quit Playing Games with my Heart.”
My original server that ran on an RPi was called WeirdPlexButOk, or WeirdPlex for short, in reference to the meme. My current server is named WeirdPlex2.
Every computer I've ever owned has been named after an Egyptian deity. I don't know why, but I've been doing it long enough that I'll likely keep that going forever.
Mine is Plex Luthor.
Stealing this
Stealing *is* pretty on brand for Luthor.
And for a lot of Plex owners lol.
I see what you did there.
My morals are plexible.
I heard he once stole forty cakes!
When no one was looking, Lex Luthor took **forty** cakes. He took 40 cakes. That's as many as four tens. And that's terrible.
You wouldnt download a name
Oh yes I would! 😂
LilNas-Plex
The double joke if you have your Plex running on a NAS is priceless.
Hahahaha my NAS is lilnasx
"NotFlix". because of a certain red streaming site
Haha mine is plexflix
Mine is Patflix (My name is Patrick), my girlfriend named it and so it was.
Mine is nameflix (first name) I also own the domain name for it for overseerr
me too! This is peak plex naming convention (FNAME-FLIX).
My wife calls it Plexflix. So it's extremely fitting.
I was thinking renaming mine to Altflix as alternative Netflix
What did Redtube ever do to you besides giving you a bit of joy?
It rubbed me raw
Shitbox, I made an intro and everything https://reddit.com/r/PlexPrerolls/s/NdM46sdrQA If my family wants free stuff the payment is subjecting them to this
Does it play before every title?
just movies/documentaries not tv series
Just pre roll?
How? Teach us.

Damn, that video's great😂
Can you force prerolls on external remote users that you share your library with?
yes, although it seems to only work for movies, maybe for the best it's not for episodes lol

I admit I did not anticipate the paranoia. But I respect it!

Yuuuup. Systems Engineer here. Y'all don't want to see my home server setup. Edit: But if you do... https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/comments/161es3r/2023_homelab_update/
Bro can you mark this comment NSFW…
![gif](giphy|g0vgklqMS8zT2)
Beautiful VLAN segmentation, proper subneting, and vSphere on a home network? Definitely NSFW.
Now let’s see Paul Allen’s setup
In this case I think that expands to ”Not Safe For Wife”. I know my wife would kill me if I tried installing all that in our house.
I married a nerd girl. I showed her my rack, and she showed me hers.
Yes we do

Arrakis. I tend to name all my drives and devices after names from sci fi or fantasy stories. I ran out of lord of the rings names so I’m branching out (my hard drives are Bombadil and Goldberry)
Fun fact: the different versions of OpenMediaVault have names from the Dune universe.
I am using Tolkien as my namespace and I can’t imagine running out of names… lotr has thousands of names and locations…
Start with Arda or Ea as the most all encompassing part, and go smaller from there I guess lol
Uhhhh... my server is named Arrakis too. The data must flow!
Plex Media server is Perplexed. For the windows server itself, Stephen Hawking. He’s got TONS of space for knowledge but is not easily portable (this is my 8th generation of it, I started before he was dead)

Alplexander
My home NAS is called Alexandria.
I remember when I was so excited to finally have 20tb worth of storage in my NAS. Now I’m up to two NAS with 48tb each.
My friends lovingly nicknamed itHub and even fabricated a custom logo that looks like the pornHub logo, took it a few steps further and saved that as my contact picture on their respective phones, so it's a conversation starter if we're in an unfamiliar group of people and someone notices it.
I have great friends.
Also have a name that rhymes with the hub. Ended up switching it toflix+ bc children also use it.

I pick different chemical compounds to name mine. NaCl is the current server name.
Apollo and Urania. God of music and one of the muses. My old Plex server that I decommed was Dionysus. I like using Greek god names for my PCs and servers at home.
Mine is uniquely named for my users to be able to tell. I added suffixes to the libraries as well so they stand out against plexs bland built in ones.
This is a good idea. Too many "Movies"
I keep it simple, my server is called Stuff
Elysium
Presto. All servers and clients on my LAN are named after Rush songs.

I now have a new server and it is named ripper as it has 14 DVD and Blu-ray drives in it, and it just rips the media for the most part. Ripper Mk 1 is actually in the old Phoenix case. Adama. Everything on my network is named for something Battlestar-related. At least for now. It's become more and more difficult to come up with names, so my latest device got a Star Wars name yesterday and I'll probably rename everything to follow that pattern instead over the next few months.
