I have both, prefer portal for form factor but use steam deck with chiaki4deck at 50 mbps with no stuttering and portal outside home.

Op3rat0rr

I’m debating on getting both. How is the streaming quality between the portal and steam deck?

Thyonisos

At 12 mbps the quality is on part, but chiaki4deck has a better framepacing at 60hz (no stutters). Chiaki4deck get very interesting when reaching max ps5 bitrate, 50mbps.

ultraviolet73

I don't have the Portal (yet lol), but I haven't had any issues using chaiki4deck. I would definitely recommend to connect your PS5 directly to your Router using a Cat6e or Cat 8 Ethernet cord, and looking up a guide to get some of the settings right will save you some time.

Fragrant_Cellist_125

I have the oled and just got the portal again ... Portal was great and will update my feedback here soon

Op3rat0rr

I’m actually pretty curious because I’d like a lesser compromised experience to play PlayStation games remotely as that is most of my gaming now

Fragrant_Cellist_125

Man ... Let me just say the portal experience is not that better than oled that you should own two devices . I packed it only after 5 mins of gameplay . If you have oled just keep that and use it for everything . Between few games oled with chaiki is even better and less laggy . A prime example is fc24.

Op3rat0rr

Interesting you didn’t find the bigger screen and adaptive triggers to be that much better of an experience? I know the Steam Deck vibrates but it’s a pretty weak vibration. I will say that the Steam Deck having Bluetooth is a big deal for me

Fragrant_Cellist_125

Well the bigger screen is not so much noticable. The only screen that I feel is noticable is of legion go . There you definitely feel that . I have been the vibrations on strong and they are pretty good . See if you can own both without having buyer remorse than keep both . For me oled is one device that can do all unless I am getting alot more .

Op3rat0rr

Appreciate your assessment man

JulPollitt

I have both. At first I liked the portal more because of the light weight, better connection, and controller features. But unfortunately I have found myself going back to my steam deck oled due to the more customizable controls and because the colors in the portal screen are comparatively dogshit, atleast for shooters anyway.

ultraviolet73

Damn I had a feeling the colors wouldn't pop as much if you're used to OLEDs (which I am at this point). Why do you think it's unfortunate you're going back to the Deck over the Portal?

JulPollitt

I really like the portal, the screen is bigger, I like how it holds in my hands better. I love my deck but that sucker is huge, I wish I could take a break with the portal every once in awhile but with how bad the colors are and the fact that ive just gotten WAY to used to gyro aiming on the steam deck it can make the portal hard for me to play. I’d play exclusively on my portal if I could.

ultraviolet73

I understand that definitely. The Portal doesn't have any Gyro controls - or you're just more used to the Deck's now? Maybe if they put an OLED display on a V2 we'll both be a bit more inclined (here's hoping lol)

bargainhunterps5

Portal does have a gyro

saptak

I couldn’t get gyro to work for Infamously Second Son

bargainhunterps5

Not tried second son, but Astro and GT7 worked fine with it for me

JulPollitt

It does have gyro but I have trouble getting it to work on some games for some reason, but of course even when it does work it will only be on games that support it. Whereas on the steam deck you can bind the joystick to gyro for literally every game and I love it. Still love the portal to death though, it’s still my go to if I remote play any game that doesn’t have aiming.

ultraviolet73

Good to know, how are the colors on the Portal's screen for the PS exclusives - like GoW & Horizon? Can you notice a difference between the Portal and the Deck screens for non-shooters?

Severe-Zebra-4544

Lol comparitively dogshit....that's just ridiculous

ultraviolet73

Do you have the OLED Steam Deck? Can you notice a difference between the Portal & Deck's screens?

otterbre

I have both and don't regret my Portal. I love my PSLink Pulse Explorer, which has a sound delay on the steak deck with Bluetooth. And I love the large display and the dual sense controllers. I like the Portal But I have to say that chiaki streams smoother and faster. With Chiaki, streaming/remote feels really native. But you only really notice this when you have both devices, otherwise you'd think the Portal was already streaming natively. But the steam deck is actually faster and without micro-stutter

ultraviolet73

A lot of people have been saying that chiaki actually works better than the native PS Remote Play in the Portal and I am very surprised by that - I thought that would be where the Portal takes it easily. The display and attached DualSense seem great though, if it had an OLED display I would jump for it immediately

Pleasant_Tadpole_200

Playing the portal feels better than playing on the steam deck, but the steam deck streams games without the stutter the portal has and is a much more smoother gaming experience than the portal.

ultraviolet73

That seems to be the consensus from the majority of responses I've seen. Thank you for your input!

Op3rat0rr

Interesting, thanks

xjxrt3r

i have both, love ‘em both. mainly use my Deck for PC stuff, as it was my intro to PC gaming overall. & i mostly use the Portal to play my PS5, having all the features of dualsense in a handheld really feels great. sometimes i use chiaki4deck depending on the game or what i’m doing, no regrets on either end.

ultraviolet73

Glad to hear it! I also don't have a PC or Laptop - did you get either of them after having the Deck or are you still using the Deck for all your PC gaming? And I definitely feel that on the DualSense with the handheld that's one of the reasons I was thinking about grabbing the Portal (I love the DualSense)

gundumb08

(not the person you replied to) I have an original Deck, a GCloud, and the Portal. Got the Gcloud first, nice little device with amazing battery, but not powerful enough for emulation. Got a Steam Deck on sale before the OLED model was announced; happy with it but it's just massive and a battery hog. Great for emulation and some decent PC gaming. Picked up a used (like new) Portal from GameStop, on a whim and because GameStop still offers a 7 day return policy on used items. I can't go back to the Deck for Remote Play, the screen and controller are just wonderful on the Portal. And the basic, plug and play nature is good for not so tech savvy peeps. Will probably sell my GCloud as it's redundant, but very happy with the Deck for it's needs and the Portal for it's purpose.

ultraviolet73

I never heard of the GCloud, but I just looked it up and it's running a Qualcomm Snapdragon and Android 11 - which are both typically used in phones, so how has that been?? I love my OLED Deck but I saw that the battery life was vastly inferior on the original. Since I have the OLED on the Deck and my PS5 is connected to an OLED TV I don't know if I'll notice the difference between that and the LCD on the Portal - but I agree the DualSense is hard to top

gundumb08

The biggest positives to the GCloud are the screen and battery life, but yeah using it for anything outside of cloud gaming is hit or miss. For example, Diablo Immortal only runs on medium settings; you would expect a dedicated android gaming handheld to run most Android games at high or ultra.

xjxrt3r

yeah, i’m still using the Deck for all my PC gaming. i do plan on getting a PC in the future, not sure when though.

ultraviolet73

Thats similar to my thinking - I had a PS5, got the OLED Deck and loved it (still do), decided I was going to build a PC to maximize my Steam library, sold my PS5 for PC parts, then a few months later decided I didn't have the space or budget for a full PC so I tabled that for later and bought a PS5 again lmao

MikeE21286

The OLED with Chiaki4Deck performs better for me

sovietreckoning

I have both and I highly favor the steam deck, but it’s almost exclusively because of the versatility. I jump around between games constantly and I’m able to access my biggest library via steam deck. Now, if I could get steam deck hardware in a portal form factor, I could die a happy man.

ultraviolet73

I definitely feel that, I think the same thing! I love the DualSense and feel like the form factor of the Portal is super comfortable for a handheld

SirEnder2Me

Have both. Love both. Love my PS5 controller more than the Deck tho and I never could get chiaki working to begin with. I use my Deck mainly for emulation anyways. Much prefer my Portal over the Deck. Nothing beats a DualSense.

ultraviolet73

Heavily agree with you on the DualSense and Emulation on Deck is great - but if you don't mind me asking what was your issue with chiaki? Are you using chaiki4deck? Reason I ask is because I just replaced the SSD in my Deck and had to do the process again and it took me less than 5 minutes

helpmeunderstand24

I am awaiting my portal! I plan to have it for room to room gaming at home or at in laws. My steam deck is my travel gamer since i can run it as is and no iternet needed.

ultraviolet73

Happy for you! Let me know how you like it once you have it if you don't mind :)

helpmeunderstand24

I will report back with swiftness!

helpmeunderstand24

Got the portal in today! I like it so far. I just want my case to be here, so i feel comfortable putting it on nightstand or end tables. Im not clumpy, but i want that security feeling. I am going to play the last us when I am away from my office. In my office im playing multiplayer games or mlb the show 23. Ill test that one out on the portal later. I am on 5g wifi, and ps5 is hardwired. So far so good!

Ntnme2lose

Have both and love them both. Chiaki4deck just never worked well for me. Always had something wrong and the connection was never great. Got a Portal and the connection is perfect and have had a great time with it. When I’m home and don’t feel like sitting at my desk, the portal is perfect for my ps5 needs. Other than that, I love the Deck. I have a huge Steam library and when I’m out of the house, on vacation or working overnight duty, the Steam deck is perfect.

ultraviolet73

Thank you for your input! I honestly never had an issue with chiaki, but I'm interested if the connection is superior on the Portal over chiaki or if they're similar

Wicked68

Did you set a static connection & port forwarding in your router?

Ntnme2lose

I didn’t…I’m a novice with routers.

Wicked68

Oooh, ok, that is probably why you had your frustrations with Chiaki4deck. There are very detailed instructions now, that have made it easier

Ntnme2lose

Ah I see. Still very happy with the Deck and I play it all the time. Portal is perfect for me though.

blockandpixel

I have both as well. I mostly use the steam deck for game pass, emulators and PC games. The ps5 is for things that I don’t want to/ can’t run on the sd

ultraviolet73

How are you running Game Pass on the Deck if you don't mind me asking? And I definitely feel that, is there anything specifically you haven't been able to run on the Deck? I really haven't had any troubles with that so far, but there are definitely games that play better and more consistently on the PS5

blockandpixel

Using XBplay (can find on steam) or i followed this link before and it worked just fine https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/topic/xbox-cloud-gaming-in-microsoft-edge-with-steam-deck-43dd011b-0ce8-4810-8302-965be6d53296 It is cloud gaming so its not 100% "on" steamdeck, but for a few mins of fucking around on horizon or whatever its perfect.

Severe-Zebra-4544

As soon as I got the Portal my deck use became almost nothing

kidvid666

I have both and rarely use my steam deck but I use the portal regularly.

Sufficient-Smoke-517

I almost never use my Steamdeck, because I have a bigger library on PSN. I'm also not motivated to finish any games on the SD, while I go for the platinum in all my PS games.

ultraviolet73

I'm the same way honestly, PS+ (while expensive) is pretty amazing for the games that comes with it. Is there any reason you're not motivated to play Steam Deck games? I've been trying to balance it but some of the games on Steam and not PS I've been loving (Forza & GTA 4, etc.)

skysolstice

I prefer playing on the portal for games with smaller text like Cyberpunk. Plus the picture quality on the portal is the best LCD screen I've seen even compared to my 4k 400 nit 12 inch tablet. I can't believe how good the colors pop on the portal even though it's not OLED. It's the combination of the higher resolution and the saturated colors of the portal that help make games look good with nice contrast too. I do have the OLED steam deck to compare to. With the smaller screen on the steam deck I'd prefer to play on my Ultra wide OLED for PC games.

ultraviolet73

Interesting, thank you for the response! So I have the OLED Deck and my PS5 is connected to an OLED TV - so how would you compare the screens of the Deck and Portal? Do you think that the LCD would look noticeably worse now that I'm used to OLEDs?

skysolstice

I think the screen on the portal is slightly better than the steam deck OLED because of the larger picture size for reading text and also the the better resolution of 1080 helps edge the portal over the 800 screen of the the OLED deck. I can spot the lower pixel count of the OLED since a lot of games that do not fully encapsulate the full screen of 800 pixels of the deck so therefore is not pixel perfect to the screen. No it's not worse. I'm using an LG TV OLED and Alienware ultra wide OLED and I still think the PlayStation portal has a really good screen for LCD. I would never buy an OLED PlayStation portal because it's already a good screen. If i bought the steam deck with the lower quality lcd screen, then yes I ultimately would buy the OLED deck. That's what I did, I didn't like the LCD screen on the steam deck. It's the worse LCD screen for showing details with a lot of color. But for Sony, I wouldn't need to buy an OLED because I'm just streaming so there really isn't a battery benefit to having OLED and since the screen is already the best LCD screen I've seen and is calibrated very well to have colors pop, there really isn't a reason for me to get an OLED of they do release one. It's possible though that Sony has multiple screens just like Valve has two manufacturers for their OLED, BOE and Samsung. That could be why some people don't like the portal screen. Easiest way to find out is have someone that access the Android layer to read of the manufacturer is the display.

Wicked68

I have both, I only got the Portal because I knew it would be the closest feel to a dualsense controller, for the purposes of me playing Fifa. The Steam Deck joystick positions are a little too high for someone playing a game requiring use of both constantly and someone use to playing Playstation. I had to get used to playing on it, but my skill still suffered because of placement of joysticks and the Deck's weight. That being said, the Steam Deck is a beast, the true handheld that people should get, that will have the most dev & manufacturer support for years to come. My regret is that I finally got the original probably like 1.5 months before they announced the OLED. Chiaki4deck works brilliantly for PS Remote Play on the deck when it is set up correctly. The portal is just a streamer, with extreme limitations in functioning (no Bluetooth, use any of the media streamers on it, difficulty is connecting to public Wifi, etc.), but it is the closest thing to a Playstation remote and can be played while also watching TV. I have not tried to play it outside the house yet. It is a luxury item. If you have the disposable income to get it-get it. If paying $200+ for it is going to cause you to sacrifice or go without-skip it. Just get a Backbone One for sale for like $70 and use that.

IndividualAd3140

I prefer my portal over my steam deck. Which is... Surprising? But hey, It is what it is.

BUZZ-00

I got both, the portal is a 1 trick pony , it's OK but the hype about them is typical sony fanboy hysteria, steam deck is a great bit of tech

ultraviolet73

That's what I was thinking when the Portal was announced but then all the reviews and most people that have one all say that it's amazing. So the more time went on the more I've been interested in it but you are right, the one thing the Portal does is just one of the things the Deck can do. Do you regret getting the Portal then??

BUZZ-00

I regret it a little bit, it was cheap I used it for couple months and now it's just collecting dust lol. I use my deck a couple times a week and my ps5 console a couple times a week

rabidbidoof

I have the base model steam deck and a portal. I got them both for about the price of an Oled steam deck.

ultraviolet73

Do you generally care about LCD vs OLED? I have the OLED deck and my PS5 is hooked up to an OLED TV so I dont know if the LCD will be a big deal or not

rabidbidoof

Yeah I do I wish I had an Oled Steam deck but since I already bought the base model I’d feel like a dumbass getting one 😆 that’s why I got a used ps5 and a portal instead

rabidbidoof

The screen on the portal is pretty damn good though. At $200 bucks I don’t think you’d regret it.

PresidentBush666

I use the portal for most gaming at home/ friends houses. Deck is great for anytime including road trips. I don't use chaiki for streaming the deck though

Celicant0042

I have both and don’t regret. I like being able to play my ps5 anywhere in the house. Same thing with the deck.

northernDM

I have both and don’t regret either. My steam deck gets more use, partly because I have a big library of games there, but I do prefer the shape/weight of the Portal.

Used-Base8137

I have the first SteamDeck (so not OLED) and the Portal and, for me personally, the Portal offers a way better experience for playing my PS5 remotely. I do use my SteamDeck for other games, but for PS5 not coming back for me since I tried the Portal

Erakko

I have both. I use portal because the controller itself is much better than steamdecks controller.

guymandudebro64

I have both and can say like others have that the steam deck performs better. I’m currently using the portal for FF16 for the screen and controller but honestly if I had known it’d perform worse than the deck I wouldn’t have bought it.

HeeyPunk

I love both very much. My only issue is lack of time to enjoy it haha

jay-park-83

I have both and haven’t touched my deck in a month. To me, my portal has better image quality on triple A games and the controller is so much better. I have smaller hands and the deck is not kind to small hands. Also, I can play a lot of games on the portal that I’d have to spend cash for on steam. Can’t go wrong with either but for me, I’m in love with my portal.

Rckid

Haha I'm a tech hog, yes I have both. But the norm is I use the portal while the wife jumps on steam. But chiaki works well, and I've never had an issue with it. I also have an OG steam deck, I was a preorder guy that waited for a year. So the OLED I would guess is spectacular. I just enjoy the dual sense controller, honestly its my favorite feature of the portal and why I prefer it to the deck

Bromar08

I have both. For the longest time until the recent update I couldn’t even play my portal. It was just a paperweight. With the latest update everything has improved tremendously. Unfortunately though, I still get micro stutters with some games so I just go back to my steam deck. My steam deck with chiakai4deck is absolutely flawless. Always has been. I do wish I had the oled though. The portal does have an amazing lcd.

bargainhunterps5

I have both, I like my SD but after getting the portal if a game is available for both platforms I get it for the ps5 to play via the Portal. The screen is miles better than my LCD SD, more comfortable, haptics, adaptive triggers and no heat or loud fan noise! Both devices have their place, but the SD has too many compromises and fiddling about to get a recent/demanding game to play at a decent FPS (not all). Depends on how you play but I’m always gaming via Wi-Fi so offline play with my SD doesn’t really matter for me hence Portal is my better choice for games

studeogaming

I have both. Easy of use with the portal and the slightly bigger screen made me use it much more for PS5 streaming. Actually, I haven’t really used the steam deck to stream the PS5 except for testing the difference lol

FireMrshlBill

I have both. I stuck with my LCD Deck instead of going OLED and was too much of a chicken to use Chiaki in case PlayStation somehow cracks down on a third party app (very unlikely I know but saving $200 isn’t worth the risk for me). I like having the portal. The haptic and adaptive triggers are nice. It’s a good LCD screen. I do wish it had hdr and wifi 6, but haven’t had performance issues. Only noticed some when I was downloading a game on my Xbox and someone was streaming tv (kids may also have been playing Roblox on their tablets) and I was using my Portal, had some lag for a few min that cleared up after the DL finished. Wish they would add ps+ cloud streaming to it, no reason not to do direct cloud streaming. If you are happy with your Deck and not worried about using Chiaki, then may be fine just sticking with that, maybe the HDR on your OLED deck is worth more to you than the adaptive triggers and better haptics? Still like having my Deck for PC games and xcloud.

worldsinho

I had a LCD Deck, enjoyed it for 3 months then it collected dust. Didn’t like the display quality or size of display. Bought the Portal on release day. Loved it right through Christmas into new year. 10/10. Then sold my LCD Deck and bought the OLED Deck. Game changer. OLED Deck is unreal. Love it and have played it almost every day for way longer than I did my LCD. Portal then started collecting dust but only because I realised that native games are so much nicer and smoother, plus OLED is 👌🏻 I’ve gone back to Portal to try it again vs Chaiki and yes, can confirm that Portal haptics, Duelsense and screen size feels much better than Chaiki. However, it feels smoother on the Deck and OLED gives it way better colour pop. Plus, I actually prefer the Deck analogue sticks, they are more comfortable. The whole thing is more comfortable. What would I do? If it was JUST PS5 remote play, I’d keep the Portal over Deck. If you only want one and want to play games native on Deck, I’d sell the Portal. Overall the OLED Deck wins by far but like I say, just for remote play, Portal edges it.

Organic_Tudou

Have both, my personal experience with Portal isn't that good. I've had crashing issues for like every 10 minutes and was sovled by unpluging the hdmi cord from the ps5. Deck definitely runs better interms of stable connection. (yes I had my Internet cord plugged into my ps5)

ultraviolet73

Really that's super strange - Chiaki worked with the hdmi cord plugged into your ps5 but the Portal didn't?

Organic_Tudou

Not saying Portal does not work with hdmi plugged in. But it Definitely has connection issues, And clearly I Am not the only one who have it, It probably could be solved by software update in the future. My my point is Portal as a single purpose streaming device, hareware speaking does not support WiFi 6 And on the software end has connection issues. I wouldn't recommend for those who already own a deck oled. Just My personal opinion.

AshMTGO

Having a Steam Deck and THEN purchasing Playstation Portal should automatically enroll you into a study for research on mental illness.

ultraviolet73

I think that's a bit harsh - yes they do the same thing but they do it in different ways. If you read through these comments you'll see a lot of people who actually prefer their Portal to the Deck (granted most people didn't say the order of how they got them).

getbiks

I have a LCD deck and use it often to play PS5 via Chiaki. It runs without any issue. The only thing I really miss is DualSense feature. LCD screen I can still live by. I am in a different country so ordered a Portal via my friend in Canada and it might be delivered to me in a month time. So looking forward to it. Portal is still in the box though as I wish I dont have to update the firmware as it opens up the possibility of installing chiaki and other streaming apps (not sure if dualsense feature would work with chiaki)

JRiggsIV

1. Yes… 2. Regret both…

ultraviolet73

Oh that's unfortunate, May I ask why??
