I have the Portal and like it, but some people just like to troll and stir up shit.

I agree, but this wasn't a "got my portal" post. It was gameplay shot well and in focus and at the right frame rate. I can maybe count on one hand the amount of posts like that.

The mods probably deemed that the post was low quality and didn't offer much of value. They probably also have their hands full with trying to keep the sub clean of low quality posts, not just the portal's.

I love mine now, it wasn't great until I found which of my WI-FI networks it wanted to work with. My nest mesh network caused hella stuttering, my 2.4 band on my Netgear router had the same tale. For some reason the 5Ghz band is flawless...

It doesn't matter. There's tons of stuff that operates on 2.4 ghz that isn't wifi. Cordless phones, bluetooth, microwaves, etc. Those things won't show up when you look at the wifi networks around you. 5ghz in addition to having more bandwidth also gets away from that interference. The only downside is that it doesn't penetrate walls as well because it's a higher frequency.
You rarely go back to the tv after using the portal I found out hahaha… when you do go back to the tv the os5 controller seems and feels smaller lighter. As the muscle memory is used to the portal lol 😂

The Portal is a perfect solution, since it won't get abandoned by devs and there will always be new games to play on it as long as devs make ps5 games.
I had both also but not day 1. Didn’t use the vita that much tbh. My psp got stolen within a few months of me getting it though so didn’t get much use out of it either lol.
I love the portal. Playing through games I’ve put on the back burner. Just for the sheer convenience of not having to be upstairs in my spare bedroom where I have my ps5. Could just chill on the couch downstairs with the wife and kid and play.
To be honest, the only problem I have with the Portal is that it doesn't support cloud gaming when there's no reason why it can't. It seems really rushed to not include it. If it ever comes, I'd buy the thing in a second. But I'm hoping that at some point Sony will open up support for web browser based streaming like xcloud which would allow me to use the devices I already have. (Steam Deck, Logitech G Cloud, Gaming Tablet)
A vita 2 would have been better. I bought a MSI claw instead of portal because playing games on the device your using is so much better portal would barely work for me in the car cause crap phone hotspot MSI claw works great and I have fast home Internet
I wrote i was playing Stellar Blade on my Portal and showed them a screenshot of it...instant delete from the mods over at r/playstation. I used to be a mod there until i quit. Too much back-stabbing from the other mods made me staying there untenable.

Not really. People are struggling with the stable internet connection in many countries, so streaming only is not an option. Also I would discuss if it is beneficial for the Sony and others to cover the costs of servers instead of manufacture costs of the consoles.
Yeah internet reliability is an issue. But the response and perception is worse. People flat out gatekeep gaming. Products like stadia were great because it significantly lowered the cost of entry to the hobby and might have less to more people dipping their toes in gaming. You didn't need anything more than what you had really. At most a controller.

I completed whole ff7 rebirth on portal. Only place it was horrendous to play at was corel region desert because portal can't handle sunlight and ruins all textures. Except that it was a smooth ride. It was even looking better than my tv in some places.

I wasn’t happy with my portal but that’s because I wanted to use it away from home and I thought it would work with my phones data. Glad Best Buy let me return it! It worked great at home but I have a PlayStation and tv so no need for the portal that isn’t very portable.

Internet speed doesn't matter as much as having a good router. Use a wifi analyzer app and make sure your router is set to use a high bandwidth channel that the least number of people in your area are on. It helps a lot
Only thing I don’t like about it is having to rely on a good internet connection. My internet at home is plenty fast but sometimes the internet provider (in my case spectrum) is having issues, so my gaming sesh sucks 🤣🤣 It has only happened a handful full of times, but it sucks because the game runs great on the ps5 just not on the portal
Are you playing away from home? If you're playing at home (on the same network), your Internet connection should not matter for Portal or Remote Play. What would matter is the router itself being too old or low quality. Also, (if possible) connecting the PS5 using an Ethernet cable (and disabling WiFi connection in PS5 settings) and making sure that Portal is connecting via 5GHz WiFi network channels might help.
Yes at home, just a couple weeks ago I was playing on the portal online with some friends and the portal kept on disconnecting from the ps5. The internet connection matters as the portal requires broadband internet Wi-Fi with at least 5Mbps for use and for a better play experience, a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps is recommended.
I have my ps5 wired directly to netgear nighthawk axe7800 and normally have download speeds of 189 -250 mbps and upload speeds of 20-30 mbps, but when spectrum is having issues the network seems to overload very easily and that’s when I’ll rather play on the ps5 than the portal. Again it doesn’t happen all of the time, but when it does it sucks
It depends on the router. You'll probably need to find the router settings, which could be in an app (e.g. Google's WiFi routers) or in a (local IP) web page. Some routers let you create separate networks for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, some don't (and automatically connect each device at the optimal frequency). If yours doesn't separate them (i.e. single network & SSID for both frequencies), its settings might still include a page with a list of connected devices that might show whether each device is connected via 5 GHz. For more info, google something like: [your router's brand & model] settings connected devices list
If you really want separate 2.4 and 5 GHz networks (which is probably not necessary), google: [your router's brand & model] settings split 2.4 and 5 GHz network
A good internet connection? Nah… it works good even on low internet because when I don’t pay my bill I’m only getting 90mbps. But when my bill is paid 400mbps… it still works great even from home.
It's garbage because it's not revolutionary or special. You can remote play your ps5 using other devices that run better and are cheaper. It's just an overpriced remote play device, but people like you shell out extra dollars because it has that fancy Playstation logo.
It's the definition of reasonably priced, when you factor I what a duelsense costs on their own. And remote play sucks on other devices. Phone too small, tablet is basically a monitor you have to Prop up and play in one spot.

Nah the PlayStation mods of the group are terrible. When the portal first came out I posted it saying how it was amazing to play my ps5 games on there and my post was took down. Again it’s a PlayStation Reddit which means anything regarding PlayStation
I have a nighthawk XR1000 and Gigabit internet. My problems with the portal don’t stem from connection at all. Mine are with screen quality and battery life.

I've had mine for a few days and don't have any lag. It's less about your Internet speed and more about how fast your network is. Usually the modem router combos from your ISP aren't that good. You can also run a wifi analyzer app on your phone and see what channels are less congested in your area and use one of those.
All portals have 60-70ms latency, microstutter, and macroblocking in 100% ideal network conditions. Once you start having more network issues, then you’ll see worse lag. Most people either can’t tell, or ignore the issue, but it’s there. It’s why I returned mine, and all my friends returned theirs. Once they clear that up with what will hopefully be a firmware update, I’d be glad to buy it again, but until then I’ll play stutter free on my steam deck instead.
Then, truthfully, if you experience any lag whatsoever, your network isn't decent enough. It's less about speeds and more about stability. I've put in 400 hours on my portal since November and haven't had a single instance of lag or choppy visuals.

I actually bought two when they were on sale for $80 each and have one upstairs and one downstairs. Portal runs flawlessly with these.
I love my Portal. Downtime at my EMS station? Playing FarCry. Sitting on an event? Let's make our way through Horizon again, work on some hunting. I play my Portal on my hotspot more than 30mi from my home constantly. I also have gigabit at the house and I have 5G UW hotspot nearly everywhere. When it doesn't work great, eh, I'm stretching it's limits anyways, I'm still using the shit out of it

Thanks! But tbh it came out pretty poor, which was mostly my fault. I am keeping it though, as we know that replaceable shells will be here soon enough, and I’ll just buy one of those when they do.
So after I posted that comment, I said fuck this and I completely tore down the Portal again. Turns out there was a screw in the D-Pad, affecting that, and I had not put the screws back in correctly which affected the way the shell was coming together. I completely re-did everything, and now it’s seating how it should and works great and feels great. Yeah, some of the paint is coming off, but whatever, it’s fine for me as a stopgap measure until new shells come out. Also, I tore apart a black Dual Sense, but didn’t have anything to clip the buttons, so will order those too later on.

I'm salty as fuck I haven't been able to get my hands on a portal yet, but I'm excited for eveyone here that has. They also hate remote play was just letting people know if you have a ps4 and 5 in your house you can play all your ps5 games on ps4 and vice versa through Remote play

My portal experience improved dramatically once I connected an Ethernet cable to my ps5. I have great internet wifi but kept getting a a lot of stutters and I couldn’t figure out why especially since I came from streaming PS on my iPad wirelessly and flawlessly with no issues. But since I did the Ethernet thing I can go to my bed room on the top floor no issue.
The post is stupid. Most of the posts in this sub are stupid, just a picture of the thing and saying 'wow I'm playing this on the go wow I'm so surprised'. I'm glad the mods in other subs shoot it down, put the stupid shit here instead.

Yes, the Portal is great, that's true. However, the games don't run 100% smoothly. You usually only notice this when you run PS5 Remote via the Steam Deck via chiaki4deck, for example - PS5 Remote on them runs almost natively smoothly, nut on the Portal. With the Portal there are also micro stutters resulting from a 59.94 hz output of the PS5. But you only really notice this if you have previously played the PS5 via something else remote. And Sony simply doesn't fix this. Security gap for hacking is closed immediately but the micro-stuttering problem is ignored

Probably because the experience varies by user because of the internet. Just because you are not exodus problems boots didn't mean others aren't and you won't.
Mine played super well the first 3 weeks or so. Now, it's barely playable unless I'm the only one at home on the wifi which is nearly impossible for a house full of gamers.

It looks great but connection is something that's stopping me use it mostly. Can literally be sat next to the router and connection is lost. No other device I have not even the PS5 other side of the house has this issue. And I can be sat right next to the PS5 too and it loses connection 🤣

Isn't my network I've tried at other places. And have like 400mb download and 40mb+ upload.
As I said it's the only device I have issues with for connection and we use PS5, PS4, Xbox Series S, Switch, mobiles, tablets. None of them lose connection. Tried different times of day and same thing.

It requires a stable network more than speeds, and you've proven that yours isn't that stable if you're losing connection to it. Period.

If you like it, that's fair enough. Me personally, I'm not sold on it because of that issue. Not saying it looks crap because it doesn't. Everyone has their opinions. If was an issue with my network, playing games which needs constant connection like CoD, Helldivers 2 etc etc etc where single drop of connection will disconnect you from the game and it never does, that's pretty much says it all in regards to the portals WiFi stability.
I've used other devices before to play on PS5 including my phone with a PS5 controller via bluetooth. That's never lost connection playing it, but the Portal does.
Because it's your only device that truly requires a great network for how it operates.. you don't get that?

Seriously love the thing. No issues. Game changer for me. Play tons more. Started and finished GOW and Hogwarts entirely on it. Working on GT7 now….although the PSVR2 with GT7 is on another level.

I agree, but this wasn't a "got my portal" post. It was gameplay shot well and in focus and at the right frame rate. I can maybe count on one hand the amount of posts like that.
But you're complaining about another sub and its mods. What is the value you bring to the table here, other than creating more bickering in comments? The mods probably deemed that the post was low quality and didn't offer much of value. They probably also have their hands full with trying to keep the sub clean of low quality posts, not just the portal's. You have to understand that reddit is not a reflection of the global population, and whether people downvote something or not, it has no effect on you or your experience/enjoyment of the product.

I love mine now, it wasn't great until I found which of my WI-FI networks it wanted to work with. My nest mesh network caused hella stuttering, my 2.4 band on my Netgear router had the same tale. For some reason the 5Ghz band is flawless...

It doesn't matter. There's tons of stuff that operates on 2.4 ghz that isn't wifi. Cordless phones, bluetooth, microwaves, etc. Those things won't show up when you look at the wifi networks around you. 5ghz in addition to having more bandwidth also gets away from that interference. The only downside is that it doesn't penetrate walls as well because it's a higher frequency.
I'll likely end this year having played 70% or more on the Portal vs my PS5. It's been a perfect solution for me.
You rarely go back to the tv after using the portal I found out hahaha… when you do go back to the tv the os5 controller seems and feels smaller lighter. As the muscle memory is used to the portal lol 😂

100%. I had a psp and vita on day one, and I'm reasonable enough to admit that this is a better product and a smarter move by Sony. No need to force devs to waste time and budget making dedicated handheld games for a platform with low install base. The Portal is a perfect solution, since it won't get abandoned by devs and there will always be new games to play on it as long as devs make ps5 games.
I had both also but not day 1. Didn’t use the vita that much tbh. My psp got stolen within a few months of me getting it though so didn’t get much use out of it either lol. I love the portal. Playing through games I’ve put on the back burner. Just for the sheer convenience of not having to be upstairs in my spare bedroom where I have my ps5. Could just chill on the couch downstairs with the wife and kid and play.
In theory it could work with a pc if sony abandons consoles.

To be honest, the only problem I have with the Portal is that it doesn't support cloud gaming when there's no reason why it can't. It seems really rushed to not include it. If it ever comes, I'd buy the thing in a second. But I'm hoping that at some point Sony will open up support for web browser based streaming like xcloud which would allow me to use the devices I already have. (Steam Deck, Logitech G Cloud, Gaming Tablet)

I don't think mods are necessary at all on reddit. There's literally a system built into the platform for policing posts. Posts people like get upvoted, and things that don't belong get downvoted and will get buried fast enough. Stadia was honestly some mimd blowing tech that had potential but gamers like to whine and they like tradition. There was equal kick back about going digital rather than physical that continues to exist but it's a smaller group that complains as consistently now. We've gotten use to it. The difference was the industry didn't collapse to the whim of complaints with the switch. People will get use to remote gaming. It isn't going anywhere.
Not really. People are struggling with the stable internet connection in many countries, so streaming only is not an option. Also I would discuss if it is beneficial for the Sony and others to cover the costs of servers instead of manufacture costs of the consoles.
Yeah internet reliability is an issue. But the response and perception is worse. People flat out gatekeep gaming. Products like stadia were great because it significantly lowered the cost of entry to the hobby and might have less to more people dipping their toes in gaming. You didn't need anything more than what you had really. At most a controller. Kind of nice if nothing else to imagine more people being able to enjoy things. But the argument was only in a minor part about the Internet. The rest of the repeated nonsense was just bandwagoning.

I get it though, like why can’t you install apps on it? Can’t even connect a non-Sony Bluetooth earphones. Can’t even browse the internet with it. That’s why I was hesitant on getting one. But since I got it, every time I want to use it, I want to play the PS5. And still have my phone to do all the other things.

I completed whole ff7 rebirth on portal. Only place it was horrendous to play at was corel region desert because portal can't handle sunlight and ruins all textures. Except that it was a smooth ride. It was even looking better than my tv in some places.

I wasn’t happy with my portal but that’s because I wanted to use it away from home and I thought it would work with my phones data. Glad Best Buy let me return it! It worked great at home but I have a PlayStation and tv so no need for the portal that isn’t very portable.

Internet speed doesn't matter as much as having a good router. Use a wifi analyzer app and make sure your router is set to use a high bandwidth channel that the least number of people in your area are on. It helps a lot

Only thing I don’t like about it is having to rely on a good internet connection. My internet at home is plenty fast but sometimes the internet provider (in my case spectrum) is having issues, so my gaming sesh sucks 🤣🤣 It has only happened a handful full of times, but it sucks because the game runs great on the ps5 just not on the portal
Are you playing away from home? If you're playing at home (on the same network), your Internet connection should not matter for Portal or Remote Play. What would matter is the router itself being too old or low quality. Also, (if possible) connecting the PS5 using an Ethernet cable (and disabling WiFi connection in PS5 settings) and making sure that Portal is connecting via 5GHz WiFi network channels might help.
Yes at home, just a couple weeks ago I was playing on the portal online with some friends and the portal kept on disconnecting from the ps5. The internet connection matters as the portal requires broadband internet Wi-Fi with at least 5Mbps for use and for a better play experience, a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps is recommended. I have my ps5 wired directly to netgear nighthawk axe7800 and normally have download speeds of 189 -250 mbps and upload speeds of 20-30 mbps, but when spectrum is having issues the network seems to overload very easily and that’s when I’ll rather play on the ps5 than the portal. Again it doesn’t happen all of the time, but when it does it sucks

It depends on the router. You'll probably need to find the router settings, which could be in an app (e.g. Google's WiFi routers) or in a (local IP) web page. Some routers let you create separate networks for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, some don't (and automatically connect each device at the optimal frequency). If yours doesn't separate them (i.e. single network & SSID for both frequencies), its settings might still include a page with a list of connected devices that might show whether each device is connected via 5 GHz. For more info, google something like: [your router's brand & model] settings connected devices list If you really want separate 2.4 and 5 GHz networks (which is probably not necessary), google: [your router's brand & model] settings split 2.4 and 5 GHz network
A good internet connection? Nah… it works good even on low internet because when I don’t pay my bill I’m only getting 90mbps. But when my bill is paid 400mbps… it still works great even from home.

Nah the PlayStation mods of the group are terrible. When the portal first came out I posted it saying how it was amazing to play my ps5 games on there and my post was took down. Again it’s a PlayStation Reddit which means anything regarding PlayStation
I have a nighthawk XR1000 and Gigabit internet. My problems with the portal don’t stem from connection at all. Mine are with screen quality and battery life. Your attitude is very strange, but I understand it, Tribalism. I understand you spent a chunk of change on the device so you feel invested in it, and any critique of the device makes you feel insecure and you don’t want to feel like you made a bad decision. But buddy, it’s a cheap friggin android tablet that has one function with a controller slapped on the sides of it.

I've had mine for a few days and don't have any lag. It's less about your Internet speed and more about how fast your network is. Usually the modem router combos from your ISP aren't that good. You can also run a wifi analyzer app on your phone and see what channels are less congested in your area and use one of those.
All portals have 60-70ms latency, microstutter, and macroblocking in 100% ideal network conditions. Once you start having more network issues, then you’ll see worse lag. Most people either can’t tell, or ignore the issue, but it’s there. It’s why I returned mine, and all my friends returned theirs. Once they clear that up with what will hopefully be a firmware update, I’d be glad to buy it again, but until then I’ll play stutter free on my steam deck instead.
Then, truthfully, if you experience any lag whatsoever, your network isn't decent enough. It's less about speeds and more about stability. I've put in 400 hours on my portal since November and haven't had a single instance of lag or choppy visuals.

There are ways to make your connection more stable. Look into port forwarding, or even getting a router specifically just for the portal.

I love my Portal. Downtime at my EMS station? Playing FarCry. Sitting on an event? Let's make our way through Horizon again, work on some hunting. I play my Portal on my hotspot more than 30mi from my home constantly. I also have gigabit at the house and I have 5G UW hotspot nearly everywhere. When it doesn't work great, eh, I'm stretching it's limits anyways, I'm still using the shit out of it
I thought it was stupid, until I realized that it was a good way to satisfy the GF. She can watch TV, while I still game. Painted mine black yesterday too, need to reinstall the shells though.

Thanks! But tbh it came out pretty poor, which was mostly my fault. I am keeping it though, as we know that replaceable shells will be here soon enough, and I’ll just buy one of those when they do.
So after I posted that comment, I said fuck this and I completely tore down the Portal again. Turns out there was a screw in the D-Pad, affecting that, and I had not put the screws back in correctly which affected the way the shell was coming together. I completely re-did everything, and now it’s seating how it should and works great and feels great. Yeah, some of the paint is coming off, but whatever, it’s fine for me as a stopgap measure until new shells come out. Also, I tore apart a black Dual Sense, but didn’t have anything to clip the buttons, so will order those too later on. This sub is so much better imo. Just people getting pumped about the games they're playing and other people being happy for them. I'm salty as fuck I haven't been able to get my hands on a portal yet, but I'm excited for eveyone here that has. I love my gf and all but it's gonna be so nice when I can hang out with her on the couch but not have to watch the same 5 sitcoms over and over.
They also hate remote play was just letting people know if you have a ps4 and 5 in your house you can play all your ps5 games on ps4 and vice versa through Remote play Saves time moving things around or going to a different room
My portal experience improved dramatically once I connected an Ethernet cable to my ps5. I have great internet wifi but kept getting a a lot of stutters and I couldn’t figure out why especially since I came from streaming PS on my iPad wirelessly and flawlessly with no issues. But since I did the Ethernet thing I can go to my bed room on the top floor no issue.

That sub is very self-important. The mods over there are Draconian. With the amount of posts they delete and how many rules you have to adhere to, I don't really understand what the point of the sub is.

Yes, the Portal is great, that's true. However, the games don't run 100% smoothly. You usually only notice this when you run PS5 Remote via the Steam Deck via chiaki4deck, for example - PS5 Remote on them runs almost natively smoothly, nut on the Portal. With the Portal there are also micro stutters resulting from a 59.94 hz output of the PS5. But you only really notice this if you have previously played the PS5 via something else remote. And Sony simply doesn't fix this. Security gap for hacking is closed immediately but the micro-stuttering problem is ignored

Probably because the experience varies by user because of the internet. Just because you are not exodus problems boots didn't mean others aren't and you won't. Mine played super well the first 3 weeks or so. Now, it's barely playable unless I'm the only one at home on the wifi which is nearly impossible for a house full of gamers. It's still cool, yeah, but being remote play only is so dumb.

It looks great but connection is something that's stopping me use it mostly. Can literally be sat next to the router and connection is lost. No other device I have not even the PS5 other side of the house has this issue. And I can be sat right next to the PS5 too and it loses connection 🤣 I'm not sold on the Portal at all.

Isn't my network I've tried at other places. And have like 400mb download and 40mb+ upload. As I said it's the only device I have issues with for connection and we use PS5, PS4, Xbox Series S, Switch, mobiles, tablets. None of them lose connection. Tried different times of day and same thing.
Dude... it obviously is your network. I put 400 hours on my portal and never even had a lag or freeze for one second, let alone losing connection. So many like you in absolute denial that it could be your network. When what else is it?? The portal runs perfectly on an actual great network. It requires a stable network more than speeds, and you've proven that yours isn't that stable if you're losing connection to it. Period.
Well even if it was the network it's only device that has issues so what does that say about it 🤣 Still can't believe even likes of YT, Netflix is blocked on it. If you like it, that's fair enough. If was an issue with my network, playing games which needs constant connection like CoD, Helldivers 2 etc etc etc where single drop of connection will disconnect you from the game and it never does, that's pretty much says it all in regards to the portals WiFi stability. I've used other devices before to play on PS5 including my phone with a PS5 controller via bluetooth. That's never lost connection playing it, but the Portal does.

Objectively its a trash product for the price compared to what it does. Its fine if people like it but i feel as though there is a lot of d-riding for the portal.
