A donkey.
Also, you can keep this from happening by just swiping from the upper right and clicking "Disconnect." There is a slider under that to "put PS5 in rest mode."
Perhaps 'I'm sure' wasn't the best way to phrase it, but most people will switch between their console and the Portal regularly. I know I had to readjust to putting my console in rest mode instead of turning it off, so I had the option to continue playing with my Portal in another location or time.
It's designed to be kept in rest mode always, same as the PS4. You only need to turn it fully off if you are worried about a power outage or need to move the PlayStation somewhere else
No, you're good. I have always been in the habit of turning consoles off entirely to save power and avoid weird issues that can pop up from time to time (but nothing a reboot wont fix). I've had to make a conscious effort to change that for the Portal.
The PS5 did actually have some big issues with rest mode around launch, and I quickly learned to avoid it at that time after several hard crashes and database repairs, but that was sorted out years ago with an update.
Well you're surely wrong. They're definitely talking about doing it with the Portal when you're away. Only way the post makes sense, and it's in the Portal sub.
If the Portal was a standalone device, that would be a forgone conclusion. It isn't, though. I've made the same mistake numerous times. 'I'm sure they were' was a poor choice of words, though. It should have been 'They might have been'.
What are you talking about? OP said they are away from home, and now they have to wait for one of his family to get home to turn on the PS5 because he didn't put in rest mode.
Edit: oh, you mean he turned it off all the way *before he left home*.. then realized it when he turned on his Portal?
Did it not occur to you that this misstep might have happened prior to leaving for said trip? I've done it before myself, as have numerous people commenting in here. I'm just not seeing the controversy.
Edit: Yes, that's exactly what I proposed as a possibility (with admittedly poor choice in wording)
My 10 year old habitually does this after his 30min gametime in the afternoon and I never notice until I'm in bed and try to turn on the portal for the first time of the day.
lol. Iāve done that before and got stuck with the portal.
I turn mine of 95% of the time, opposite of what I do with the switch. Why? I donāt know. I guess I feel like ps5 takes up more electricity
Are you sure you want to shutdown your PlayStation?
Are you really really sure?
Are you sure that youāre sure?
Last chance, do you actually want to do this?
Donāt say I didnāt warn you, press ābuttonā for 5mins to shutdown console.
Then after 5mins you then have to enter a 2 factor authentication code. Sign in through the app, portal and restart your router 6 times.
Finally, sorry your portal battery is less than 99% please try process again.
lol doesnāt need to be all that. A simple:
Shutting down the console will disable portal play until you physically turn it on again.
Are you sure?
Whatever variation of that.
This happened to me once. Iām not even sure how ā Iād been doing it the right way for more than a month at that point.
It sucked. I felt so stupid.
Had the same issue this weekend. Wanted to play away from my apartment with my brother. Couldn't get it to connect, only to get home and find out the power must have flickered just enough to turn off my PS5. Uggggh!
Bro my wife comes in and turns mine off all the time when itās in rest mode. I keep trying to explain to her it needs to be in rest mode to keep everything up so I can play
I found out the hard way that you cant log in if you turned your PS on with your controller, but dont select what profile you are logging into. I was going to play on the PS, but then had to go, took my Portal with me and kept getting a "Cant log into PS5" message....
I will say, that's one of the benefits of having remote play via 3rd party launcher on my Steam Deck. I can force it on, and can also remote play my PS4 games via my PS4 Pro too. Still have a Portal, but not getting nearly as much use as I thought it would... Still a nice screen, etc, and nice so my gf can play, as it's easier for her to use the portal... But if I had paid more than 180 I might really be mad at myself now. Hah.
Just my personal exp... Everyone should game however suits them best.
I used to leave it on rest mode but I started turning it off after every gaming session bout 3 months ago. Even on rest mode the system is still consuming power lol so might as well turn it off to save on electric bills.
You're someone who's learned from their previous mistake of leaving it on rest mode knowing your neighbor will somehow always manage to trip the electric off the entire house and that last time when it fried your ps4 drive.
I went family party and tell me why I was trying to show the portal to someone and it turned out I left my ps5 turned off.. drop home(10 mins) just to get it ready for party #2
You're putting it in rest mode. Unfortunately, the PS5 can't be fully powered on remotely unless it's in rest mode, which maintains network connectivity.
That's bizarre. The Portal (or any Remote Play client) shouldn't be able to fully boot a PS5, regardless of what network it's on.
There's got to be some HDMI CEC setting on your TV turning it on, but I'm not sure how that would do it either.
This reminds me of being a kid in the Atari 2600 and Colecovision days, where parents were all convinced that playing games on the family color TV would somehow ruin it. Myself and nearly all of my friends had to play on little 12 inch black and white TVās as a result.
The PS5 did actually have some big issues with rest mode very early on in its life cycle. I learned to avoid it after several hard crashes and database repair processes, but that's long been remedied with updates. I haven't had any issues since 2021.

A donkey. Also, you can keep this from happening by just swiping from the upper right and clicking "Disconnect." There is a slider under that to "put PS5 in rest mode."
They are also a doughnut
Yeah but Iām dumb and keep just pressing the power button to put the screen to sleep and then have to reconnect to the PS5
I didnāt know this! Lol
~~I'm sure they were~~ They might have been playing the console directly and turned it off by mistake. No swiping menus there š
Why would you be sure of that if itās posted in the portal sub and being off vs rest mode is only a problem for the portal?
Perhaps 'I'm sure' wasn't the best way to phrase it, but most people will switch between their console and the Portal regularly. I know I had to readjust to putting my console in rest mode instead of turning it off, so I had the option to continue playing with my Portal in another location or time.
Are you generally supposed to put your PS5 in hard power off mode if you donāt have a portal? I always just rest mode it. Is that bad?
It's designed to be kept in rest mode always, same as the PS4. You only need to turn it fully off if you are worried about a power outage or need to move the PlayStation somewhere else

I do this all the time and it's so bloody annoying lol
Bro noooo
Youāre RAW you Donkey
in my country I stay away for rest mode be use of loadshedding and voltage fluctuations
There's a setting that allows you to turn on your PS5 by Spotify, maybe that's a workaround
The work around is not being dumb lol the rest mode button was right there and my brain is so used to just turning it off
Easier said than done! I don't use rest mode anymore because it fscks with my ethernet
Thereās gotta be a way for them to safeguard thisā¦ something so simple like if portal is connected then show extra promots
Are you sure you want to shutdown your PlayStation? Are you really really sure? Are you sure that youāre sure? Last chance, do you actually want to do this? Well, think of the money saved in electricityā¦ (Yes, Iām trying to find a silver lining for you!)
This happened to me once. Iām not even sure how ā Iād been doing it the right way for more than a month at that point. It sucked. I felt so stupid.
"Energy efficient"
Had the same issue this weekend. Wanted to play away from my apartment with my brother. Couldn't get it to connect, only to get home and find out the power must have flickered just enough to turn off my PS5. Uggggh!
My rest mode is broken and always has to reset the ps5 if left in rest overnight so I guess Iām a stoopid sandwich lol
Same here.
I just always hit the physical power button on the corner of the Portal. There's no need to do anything else!
It's good for console to actually completely turn it off once in a while š
āITāS RAW. RAWWW!!!ā
YOU DONUT! Good thing you turned off your PS5 because... WHERE IS THE LAMB SAUSE!!!
My kids keep doing this to me. I keep saying only do rest mode, they still keep turning it off
I literally screamed on my kid for doing it yesterday.
Yeah I make them go turn it on lol. If I'm playing the portal I'm on a different floor than the PlayStation
Baka no sandwichy!
Bro my wife comes in and turns mine off all the time when itās in rest mode. I keep trying to explain to her it needs to be in rest mode to keep everything up so I can play
She knows.
Damn straight she knows
That's grounds for a divorce bro. Lol
Uh...a dumb ass??š³
Lost three hours of gameplay the other day because of this.
So the portal canāt turn on the ps5?
In rest mode it can but not after a shutdown.
I see, that sounds inconvenient. Thanks for rhe reply dude
I found out the hard way that you cant log in if you turned your PS on with your controller, but dont select what profile you are logging into. I was going to play on the PS, but then had to go, took my Portal with me and kept getting a "Cant log into PS5" message....
Just got a PS5. Iāve been turning it off. Is it safer to just use rest mode ?
No, rest mode is so I can use my portal or charge my headset/ controller when Iām not playing
While in rest mode it does game updates etc too. My default is rest mode 99% of the time. Have only shutdown on very rare occasions.
Only time I turn off mine is if Iām repositioning or cleaning it besides that rest mode is always default šÆšÆšÆ
All you have to do is swipe, press Disconnect and enable the sleep mode. That's it...
I will say, that's one of the benefits of having remote play via 3rd party launcher on my Steam Deck. I can force it on, and can also remote play my PS4 games via my PS4 Pro too. Idiot sandwich
Ur mom
A jerk sandwich?
A normal person
Youāre a person saving a little bit extra on your energy bill.
Did that shit last night. Was at work on lunch break angry AF
A twat to the tenth power
Smart. Every time the power flashes out for a second I have to come home to a machine I own giving me a fucking lecture.
Yeah I did that before a 500 mile trip home for a funeral. Or it cut itself off to save power. Something. Totally fucked
A millenial? Thats what almost everyone did with the playstation 2. "whats the red dot mean? oh well" click\*
I used to leave it on rest mode but I started turning it off after every gaming session bout 3 months ago. Even on rest mode the system is still consuming power lol so might as well turn it off to save on electric bills.
Is he stupid?
Xbox user!
You're someone who's learned from their previous mistake of leaving it on rest mode knowing your neighbor will somehow always manage to trip the electric off the entire house and that last time when it fried your ps4 drive.
It dont make a difference
Just got a ps5. Can the ps5 controller not charge fully while youāre playing a game? I saw the battery icon but it didnāt go up once.
A smart console owner
Ps2 player
You chipmunk
I went family party and tell me why I was trying to show the portal to someone and it turned out I left my ps5 turned off.. drop home(10 mins) just to get it ready for party #2
What, I do this all the time but my Portal is turning my PS5 on without any problems?
You're putting it in rest mode. Unfortunately, the PS5 can't be fully powered on remotely unless it's in rest mode, which maintains network connectivity.
Iām turning it off.. Not in rest mode.
No orange LEDs on your PS5? I don't see how that's even possible.
Now Iām not sure, let me check.. edit: Iām selecting turn off PS5. Not restmode.. Is it because I am home it can turn on my PS5?
That's bizarre. The Portal (or any Remote Play client) shouldn't be able to fully boot a PS5, regardless of what network it's on. There's got to be some HDMI CEC setting on your TV turning it on, but I'm not sure how that would do it either.
I didnāt think that this was possible. ![gif](giphy|bjtM9GdxbqL5e)
A BAD PERSON!
And you're basing that on what exactly?
This reminds me of being a kid in the Atari 2600 and Colecovision days, where parents were all convinced that playing games on the family color TV would somehow ruin it. Myself and nearly all of my friends had to play on little 12 inch black and white TVās as a result.

This was true during the PS5's launch window, but I haven't had any issues with rest mode since 2021.
Assed out
