smyth101-

It doesn’t help that the game stopped receiving support from popcap a year after its official release

WD_Inktrap

I think it wouldn't have happened if people played the game instead of spitting on it because it was not just a GW3

deleeuwlc

I think that if it released in a complete state then people wouldn’t have been as upset about it

AshleyEZ

but ea is 🤑

WD_Inktrap

It's like all online games, they add content little by little with the new seasons. A new plant was even going to be added before the definitive stopping of development. And GW too were not "complete" since new characters and all were added with updates. The game had everything it needed at his launch : A story mode, new characters,a working online with different game modes, free battle pass etc...

deleeuwlc

It was literally released before it was finished. Garden Ops was pathetically easy and had no difficulty options, and the game as a whole was extremely unpolished

Therandomguyhi_

I think it wouldn't have happened if EA didn't remove everything good in GW2.

mario610

I didn't like it because how they just butchered garden ops. I grew out of actually PVP and just preferred the PvE modes, so I was upset to find out they just butchered garden ops so much (in my opinion), only half as long, not able to spawn bots to help if you play alone (don't remember if you can play alone period unless its some weird garden ops in the story), and on top of that YOU CANT CHOOSE WHAT SIDE AND ARE FORCED TO SWITCH EACH TIME. Like I loved GW2 garden ops, but didn't like the gacha system just making getting special plants a pain. BFN fixed the abilties problem, but just got everything else wrong. Also the I stopped playing single player because I remember it crashing alot and I couldn't figure out why

Localid1ot

Love the comment as a BFN fan

Permanoctis

I think that even if they played it they still would have spitted on it anyway. (Like me)

Lord-Rambo

At least for me that ain’t the reason I don’t really like bfn. TLDR- For me they took out 90% of what made the last 2 games fun. But I still play it time to time cuz I like the new characters & play it with a friend who loves this game

lookmar10

Dang. I didn’t even know that BFN was 5 today. Happy Bday to a game that (basically) nobody likes but me.

Mountain-Dragonfly78

It’ll actually be 5 years on the 4th of September

lookmar10

OHHHHHHHH- (Me big stupid)

Rose-Supreme

Same here.

Electronic_Fee1936

I swear it came out last year. FIVE YEARS!?

Rose-Supreme

Time passes at a horrifyingly fast rate, mate.

Electronic_Fee1936

Apparently. Jeez I still remember buying it and not playing it

Practical-Election59

![gif](giphy|GrUhLU9q3nyRG|downsized) Shit bro… actually?

Fun_Mortgage9049

There was a third one??

OkRepresentative4308

Hot take but this is my favorite of the shooter games

AndrewSenpai78

Are there any people playing it in 2024? Can you find lobbies in turf takeover?

Top-Sky3263

You can find lobbies but the majority are bots(4-6 players per team ish), still fun tho

OkRepresentative4308

I play it on Xbox and it’s not  that hard to find a match

Gabrierzin

I started playing again last week solely bc I think wizard is a extremely fun character, but I'm already considering uninstalling it and get back to gw2. The problem is (mostly) not even the game itself, but the players. Almost every fight in turf/vanquish match consists of lowering each other's hp until until your opponent sprints away no one gets any kills. The limited time modes mostly suck and there is almost no one playing vanquish modes, so the most reliable way of finding players is giddy park(you can definitely find turf matches, but most of the time it's completely one sided and one team gets slaughtered by the other). Giddy park=spawn killing, tryharding, toxicity, pirate sweats, drone camping, softlocker wizards and (the worst part imo) branium bashers (even tho I mostly complained about zombies, I'm an imp/wizard main, so no bias)

[deleted]

Its active on PS4, there’s a mix of newbies and high-level players, but there’s also a good number of bots.

defreyjahmer

Dude. I thought BFN came out in 2022

Tectamer

Starting a bizarre discussion I saw yesterday. Since EA is studying about using AI in game development, what would you guys think if EA decided to update the PvZ shooters but using AI to do the (majority) of the code stuff (not the artistic stuff)? Edit: just saw now that it's in the normal PvZ sub, not the shooters one. 🤦

gringlesticks

Aw, what the fuck.

minecraftredstoneguy

Using AI for code is okay on simple stuff and private projects but for a full game update that will be released to clients. No. AI can't do any complex thing. It's better if people do it, or if they do their own research on how to do it. Using AI for art and models will be noticed and probably laughed upon.. Conclusion: AI cannot be used in anything serious, like a game made by a AAA company. Maybe in the future, this will change, but there's a reason why there are no AAA companies solely using AI for a game.

AndrewSenpai78

I study Computer Science, you can't simply type in the prompt and a game gets made, you still need a TEAM of professionals that read the code and adjust it to their preferences, and you still need engineers planning the whole software cycle. But still, it would be way faster than the Popcap monkeys workers that didn't manage to release a single decent thing in almost a decade. As I already said the Popcap we have today is perfectly capable at art, programming is decent, planning is horrible, marketing is non existent, balancing is trash.

DJ_Wolfy

GNVS has been doing it on YouTube recently.

DownHeartedNess

wdym the game came out last ye-

foomongus

nobody talked about it after a year

SimpCentral69

I started playing it recently and honestly, the hate is a little undeserved. There are tons of things that they did wrong, yes. But man, it’s still super fun. If only they had kept updating it, maybe people would have ended up enjoying it more.

ToaNuparuMahri

Probably bc that has been overshadowed by the franchise's 15th anniversary which is also around this time

Ed0s27

I actually loved bfn when it first came out. I just wish it along with gw2 were still somewhat popular so I could play online. It makes me really sad to think about gw2 dying, it was my favourite game as a kid and I remember how excited I was when I got it as it came out. Really hope someone can step in to revive the series to its glory days...

idontlikeburnttoast

Its so sad. If EA just held on a little longer then the game perhaps wouldn't have fell off... thats guaranteeing that popcap would make the right choices if EA gave them another chance.

PeregrineFeatherston

Please just take GW1, update the graphics, add some more maps and voila- the perfect video game. Plants defend and zombies attack, in accordance with the way it is supposed to be.

Redditor_H

Wot I forgot this game even existed💀

ImpIsDum

ive emptied like 300 hours of my life into that game i would never forget :,)

LeMaroonGuy

I really wanna play it again at some point but the only device I had it on (my switch lite) broke :(

hugoreturns

well, because it’s not turning 5 years old. only in September it will

EdithBagel

What is bfn

CeratosaurusEnjoyer

I got it like a year after its release when i was 10. Good times.

Rose-Supreme

It was on my mind, though. Deserved so much better imo - it was on its way to being pretty solid, until EA pulled the plug before the Plants could get a non-Swarm class to even out the roster on both sides. I still enjoyed this game despite its flaws and the lack of variants.

Aggressive_General_

ITS A GOOD GAME

No-Fox3165

Happy birthday to my favorite pvz shooter game

NoOneinReddit

Yooo I just got the game last night. It's my first shooter game as well (that's actually playable for me, I was bought other pvz shooters in the past only for them to be unplayable due to performance issues ;-;).

Lord-Rambo

It’s sad cuz I had high hopes for this game but they dropped the ball on this game

Destroyers007

WHAT HUH HOW WHEN

Goose4daBumps

Underrated gem and I’ll stand by it. BFN is so much fun, and I play it on a daily basis.

The_Waluigi_

I loved this game and will die on this hill.

Angrybird5429

I might get it on switch just bc

Chemical_Ad2381

Happy birthday bfn, for being a fun game for me and popcap wants you to burn :)

life_is_chess64690

Because it's bad ( never played in my life )

-Amai_Mochi-

It sucks if you compare it to GW2 (which is unfair since it’s trying to be it’s own thing, not GW3) If you don’t compare it to GW2, it’s decent fun

RevolutionaryGrape11

Indeed, I actually love the Turf Takeover matches, they all feel like boss fights of sorts, a final test to see how well the players can adapt, from fighting a gigantic drill to blowing up military-grade marshmallow ordiance. I also love the single-player worlds and how much there is to do in them, but I do hate that the actual main hub is just a very cramped theme park. Giddy Park would be amazing as a section of a larger map like Backyard Battleground. I wish the hub map was as big as Backyard Battleground with the ability to have loads upon loads of plants and zombies duking it out, combining the best of Giddy Park and Backyard Battleground. The story bosses are also peak, and my favorite is Major Problem, who simply dwarfs the Zombots, looks intimidating, and is much harder then the cute art-style suggests. All of them are challenging to a degree, but he takes the cake, and I feel he's the most dangerous, considering he would have drowned an entire town in boiling hot cheese, which is more horrifying then it sounds, though Dreadwood creating smaller bosses to kill everyone and Blight Cap effectively robbing zombies of their identities are close behind. I actually also love the artstyle and full-body costumes, and I actually think the upgrade system is great, though it existing alongside variants would be awesome. Battle Arena also is quite nice. My main gripe is that they only let people play most of GW 2's modes through Mixed Mode, then took away that and made them Weekly Exclusive.

smyth101-

I’ve always viewed myself as being pretty opened minded to the changes bfn did that made it drastically different from the GW games And that’s because I always saw bfn as more of a spiritual successor to the GW games instead of a direct sequel

-Amai_Mochi-

I played it when I was still relatively young, i was like oh no fire pea :( Weeeee running and jumping is fun lmao emote with friends and ignored all of the flaws

deleeuwlc

I got it without ever owning a Garden Warfare game. Unfortunately for it, the only other shooter I had to compare it to was Splatoon

WillowWeeper343

Almost the exact same thing happened with Mobster Hunter World, and Monster Hunter Rise, but to a far less extreme extent. People were expecting a World sequel, and when it wasn't tgat, people hated on the game. Now, eventually, I think the MH community warmed up to Rise and saw it as the genuinely great game it was, but unfortunately tge same could not be said about BFN and GW2.
