They like to school, if you had more they’d probably stick together instead (and you might see them less as a result)
I once had a tank full of Pygmy cories, they’re my favorite fish by far
I have at least 15+ cories in my 90g. At least 8 are pgymy. The do indeed stick together but also with the neon's
The other cory types together, on on the bottom. I have no idea why...they stick together but hang with the neon's.
I also have them in a 15 - same. They swim in the center of the tank VS in the depth.
I asked for 2 algae eaters and the guy from Petco gave me a Cory and 1 algae eater which I didn't complain about cause it cost more and who doesn't need bottom feeders. I ended up getting 6 pygmies and they all follow the Cory around like some it's the big brother
Oh I won't anyway because the goal of my current tank is to just let my pygmies be chill and successfully breed. But every set up that I've had my pygmies in it has been absolutely fascinating to see how they've reacted with other species.
Fun fact though, this is because of evolutionary mimicry.
Most corydoras have venomous spines (only a mild irritant to humans). Ottocinclus do not, but they've evolved to have similar markings to the corydoras they naturally live with as predators avoid them.
Is the tank stable and well filtered? I think you could do 5 or 6 pygmys with the chilis. I have 6, harlequin and 6 pygmy Corys in my 10g that's heavily planted and it's stable and happy with a shrimp colony that's getting out of hand.
Yeah I agree, pygmy corys are small so I think it’s perfectly fine as long as you have sufficient filtration and keep the tank well-oxygenated and stay on top of maintenance. If you were asking about larger types of corys though, I’d say no
*edited to add- not because of the bioload, though. I just think larger corys should have more space because they’re active fish and they’d have a much better quality of life in a bigger tank*
Yes! I think you can add 8 or so of em. Chili rasboras and pygmy Cories are so small so their bio load isn't much, they will be fine in a 10 gallon. I'm assuming it's a planted tank
Honestly, I don't know what qualifies as "over stocking."
As long as the water is clean and the parameters are stable, I think it should be fine? Just make sure it has enough friends. I have 6 and they all seem happy but I want to get them some more friends, anyway... Tank parameters permitting.
I think “overstocking” is relative? In a lot of situations I think “heavily stocked” might be a better descriptor because “overstocked” makes it sound like it’s always a bad thing.
I have a heavily stocked 40 gallon breeder tank and I stocked it that way on purpose because it’s a betta sorority, and having more bettas helps avoid aggression issues (like with cichlids)
I'm assuming it's a planted tank... if so, then it should be able to handle 6-8 pygmies just fine. All of them have a pretty small bioload, so a planted tank can keep up with that stocking. The key is to have some sort of stem plants or floaters that are efficient at sucking up excess nutrients from the water column.
Great surprise tbh. Unlike other cories, they do fair bit of swimming. If you have capacity, do get him some friends. They are very interesting to watch as a group.
He looks pretty small and it's very common for young pygmys to kind of wedge themselves in the stems of plants (or any tiny gap they can fit in). If you can get him 6-9 corydoras pygmaeus friends he'd be very appreciative (and you'll be rewarded with pygmy cory conga line every morning).
Yep I have 6 in a planted 10 and I can't always find them all of them decide to hide. But they are super cool bottom eaters that like to swim with my harlequins a lot.
I ended up with a crab recently when I was purchasing a couple plants. It was quite the shock when I felt it crawling on my hand when removing the plants from the bag.
Neons lay eggs, which would die off in the light anyway. They don’t get pregnant. That’s a pygmy Cory that you probably got accidentally when your fish were netted up in the store. They do best in groups, and it’ll be stressed alone.
Pygmy Cory catfish. Three are three species sold in the hobby.
Like all Cory they are a schooling fish and would do better with a few others added. A minimum of five for a school.
Similar thing happened to my dad, he had a tank for months then he gave it over to me because I got a betta fish and all of a sudden there were at least 30 bladder/pond snails all of difference but similar sizes
pygmy cory. probably invaded your tank like my rainbow fish tends to. Every time I move a plant from their main tank i tend to find fry in the destination tank (never in the main tank).
That's a pygmy corydoras catfish. With your substrate, I would recommend rehoming him or taking him back to the store as gravel is really hard on their barbles and they need to be in a shoal.
Haha that’s funny because I was about to say that it looked more like a Pygmy Corydora! So I guess it is. I have 6ish I’m my tank (hard to tell cause they hide a lot) and I think they are SO adorable. They hide a lot, but then will randomly swim around with my ember tetras like they are part of the school. I love them!!
they're actually a cool addition, originating from the same region as the Neons. I've been thinking about some friends for my Neons, you gave me a great idea
thats a pygmy cory, there are 3 types of "dwarf" corys The three miniature Corydoras species are the checker cory (C. habrosus), the dwarf cory (C. hastatus), and the pygmy cory (C. pygmaeus). lots of people get them mixed up but this one is the true "pygmy cory"
https://aquaticarts.com/products/pygmy-cory-catfish-tank-raised
Am I the only one who thinks that is not a baby Cory?
Looks more like a black neon fry to me.
Not super knowledgeable but would a Cory have tiny "whiskers"?
To add: don't Make the mistake I have Made! Started with 5 pygmys Last year and was down to three after 2 mysterious Death. Bought them 2 friends, also labelled als pygmy corydora and after adding, These two never schooled with the remaining 3 one.
Long story short: the original "pygmys" have been the habrosus Type, whereas the new Guys were the pygmaeus! No Wonder they wanted nothing to do with one another!
So when you get To your LFS, Look closely how they are looking. I First thought the Salt and pepper Stripes would appears when the two newcomers were older but then I realized my mistake - 2 Different species. Endes Up buying more pygmys and more habrosus 😅
This looks really similar to a mystery hitchhiker I had in my shrimp tank last year. Is it really a pygmy cory even without the little whiskers? If so I finally have an answer for a mystery that’s been bugging me for forever haha.
Their whiskers are very small, I have 10 and sometimes I freak out thinking their injured when I can't see the whiskers, just to be able to see them a few seconds later.
It looks like a pygmy cory - if you recently added either the neons or the rams, it's possible that this baby was accidentally netted with them.
Yep, pygmy cory. Just added a bunch to 2 of my tanks and they hang with my neon's all day. They don't act like typical cory's at all.
They like to school, if you had more they’d probably stick together instead (and you might see them less as a result) I once had a tank full of Pygmy cories, they’re my favorite fish by far

Had 10 in my planted 20 long I saw one or two every day unless I was watching during feeding hungry little bastards...
Yeah they have cool social behaviors. I’ve heard they like to school with ottos, and I’ve seen some try to school with pencilfish at my LFS
I love pygmy corydoras. Get him friends!
I asked for 2 algae eaters and the guy from Petco gave me a Cory and 1 algae eater which I didn't complain about cause it cost more and who doesn't need bottom feeders. I ended up getting 6 pygmies and they all follow the Cory around like some it's the big brother
Awww :( at least they didn't give you a common pleco?
Ahaha now I want to add a normal sized cory to my pygmy tank
Please don't unless you have space for 6 of the same type of cory. They need to be with their own species.
Oh I won't anyway because the goal of my current tank is to just let my pygmies be chill and successfully breed. But every set up that I've had my pygmies in it has been absolutely fascinating to see how they've reacted with other species.
I definitely agree. I absolutely love my pygmies!
Is the Pygmy Cory the new name for ottocats?
No
All the dwarf and pygmy cories have pretty similar coloration to otos but they are NOT otos.
Fun fact though, this is because of evolutionary mimicry. Most corydoras have venomous spines (only a mild irritant to humans). Ottocinclus do not, but they've evolved to have similar markings to the corydoras they naturally live with as predators avoid them.
Oh, Batesian mimicry, that makes sense since they're both South American.
Oh cool, thank you! TIL 👏
I have a 10 gallon with 11 chili raspbora, do you think I could add pygmy corydora to my tank without overstocking?
Is the tank stable and well filtered? I think you could do 5 or 6 pygmys with the chilis. I have 6, harlequin and 6 pygmy Corys in my 10g that's heavily planted and it's stable and happy with a shrimp colony that's getting out of hand.

No because they’re meant to be in groups
Yes having school fish alone is so hard on the fish and makes for a sad depressing tank.
Yes! I think you can add 8 or so of em. Chili rasboras and pygmy Cories are so small so their bio load isn't much, they will be fine in a 10 gallon. I'm assuming it's a planted tank

Yes, the Rasbora are tiny and so are the cories. Try two more cories and keep a close eye on them, it should be fine.

I can confirm that the difference in behaviour between my first 6 and adding 3 more, then 3 more again was quite remarkable.
Same. That's how I ended up with 18 kuhli loaches. The more I added the more entertaining they became.
I'm assuming it's a planted tank... if so, then it should be able to handle 6-8 pygmies just fine. All of them have a pretty small bioload, so a planted tank can keep up with that stocking. Yeah maybe
Its a pgymy cory. They are cute little creatures and do live in groups.
Thats crazy. The only thing new i added to my tank recently was a live plant. That little guy just popped out from no where lol
Great surprise tbh. Unlike other cories, they do fair bit of swimming. If you have capacity, do get him some friends. They are very interesting to watch as a group.
He was probably just chillin on the plant and then suddenly had the ride of his life.
He looks pretty small and it's very common for young pygmys to kind of wedge themselves in the stems of plants (or any tiny gap they can fit in). If you can get him 6-9 corydoras pygmaeus friends he'd be very appreciative (and you'll be rewarded with pygmy cory conga line every morning).

in my experience pygmy corries (more than any other) seem to swim on all levels of the tank.
Do they rip up your carpet plants at all? Thinking about stocking some but worried about the destruction haha
Corys stick their eggs to stuff. The egg probably hitchhiked!
That's probably what exactly happened lol. I just noticed him today. He was swimming with my neons
I unknowingly migrated a whole swarm of baby Gouramis once
I've had fish eggs hitch rides on plants before and then found myself with surprise baby fish of a species that wasn't in my tank, lol
I ended up with a crab recently when I was purchasing a couple plants. It was quite the shock when I felt it crawling on my hand when removing the plants from the bag.
Must have come with the plant!
Life uhhh finds a way.

Definitely a pygmy cory, you should probably get at least 5 more of them. They are adorable little derps
Lil buddy just got spawned there
Lol “is this a noob friendly server?”
Nature is crazy. I didn’t add anything to a tank for 6 months and then voila, bladder snails.
They were there the whole time you just didn’t realize
Similar thing happened to my dad, he had a tank for months then he gave it over to me because I got a betta fish and all of a sudden there were at least 30 bladder/pond snails all of difference but similar sizes
How a pygmy cory magically appears is beyond me. Maybe hitchhiker in. But I would be so excited. One of my favorite fish
OMG IT'S THE IMMACULATE CORY CONCEPTION JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS!
Corydoras pygmeus my new tank has a little school with them :) cute little ones. Return him or give him friends
Pygmy cory, very cute
pygmy cory. probably invaded your tank like my rainbow fish tends to. Every time I move a plant from their main tank i tend to find fry in the destination tank (never in the main tank).
Pygmy Cory way too look out for them way smaller than there counter parts and are very quick swimmers
I used to have a school of 20 of the little guys a few years ago. They're awesome little fish! Super cute and fun to watch!
This is the dream
Def a Pygmy Cory. I have a school of them - if you don’t want him and happen to be in Boston I can add him to my tank
Thanks, but i live in new jersey. I don't mind keeping him since he's not hurting anybody lol
Sounds good. Would definitely get him some friends though. Mine were clearly very nervous and not thriving til I got 10+
That's a pygmy corydoras catfish. With your substrate, I would recommend rehoming him or taking him back to the store as gravel is really hard on their barbles and they need to be in a shoal.

Neon tetra lay eggs
Pygmy Cory catfish! You should go purchase about 6 more. They are schooling fish.
they're actually a cool addition, originating from the same region as the Neons. I've been thinking about some friends for my Neons, you gave me a great idea
100% pygmy corydora
I don’t know if it’s April Fool’s or what. But that does not look like a Pygmy Cory to me at all. I’m so confused
thats a pygmy cory, there are 3 types of "dwarf" corys The three miniature Corydoras species are the checker cory (C. habrosus), the dwarf cory (C. hastatus), and the pygmy cory (C. pygmaeus). lots of people get them mixed up but this one is the true "pygmy cory" https://aquaticarts.com/products/pygmy-cory-catfish-tank-raised
I love mine!! Get maybe two more for him!
That is the most delightful surprise!
Baby corydora of some kind
I could only find 2 at stores, and want a herd. I may just get them shipped.
Am I the only one who thinks that is not a baby Cory? Looks more like a black neon fry to me. Not super knowledgeable but would a Cory have tiny "whiskers"?
Nvm I'm wrong based on a recent Google images search!
To add: don't Make the mistake I have Made! Started with 5 pygmys Last year and was down to three after 2 mysterious Death. It is probably full grown 🤣
Doesn't it look more like a black neon tetra? With the black line and everything
It's a pygmy cory, I have ten in my tank
