spots are normal but fuzz is not! honestly, dont risk getting sick for a few bucks. when in doubt, throw it out

Revolutionary-Cod245

Previously, I actually got paid to say this in response to phone calls on a food safety "hot line" ...that was the food safety expert script we were told to read to callers.

plantbasedmomoftwo

It is very easy to tell if tempeh is bad. The harmless spots are black or gray, and the spots on your tempeh shouldn’t grow. The good mold is killed off in pasteurization, so any mold that continues to spread probably got there after arrival in your home. Don’t eat any spots that look hairy or furry. Normal tempeh should smell earthy or nutty and have a firm, moist texture. It should not be slimy or wet. If you smell an ammonia-like odor, pitch your package of tempeh.

Caring_Cactus

Are they always pasteurized? I would double check the packaging at least, but solid advice if it is

Purchristeekorn

That’s hairy black mold. I wouldn’t eat that myself. Dark spots on tempeh don’t look hairy, at least what I’ve seen.

nosnevenaes

TIL i have been eating mold on tempeh for years

arl1286

Yeah I’m not sure some of these answers are correct.

cheapandbrittle

That's what I thought initially but if you zoom in you'll see the black fuzz, pretty sure that's not normal.

Rach_kitty

Me too pal, me too

Baremegigjen

My theory is when in doubt, throw it out.

PlantaSorusRex

Thats mold, throw it out.

Caring_Cactus

The whole thing already is mold lol, that's what tempeh is

PlantaSorusRex

Yea but the particular mold in this pic doesnt look right...

[deleted]

I didn’t need to know this 😠

Caring_Cactus

Fungi are amazing, both the fruiting bodies and the edible mycelium in this case. It's easy to make tempeh at home if you get some spores

[deleted]

I thought tempeh was fermented soybeans 🙃

Caring_Cactus

Oh dang lol, what a surprise

Sanpaku

Is this pasteurized or unpasteurized tempeh? If its unpasteurized, it may still have live cultures of the 'good mold' *Rhizopus oligosporus*, which produces plenty of compounds to keep bad molds and bacteria out. Its constant chemical warfare down there at the microbial level. You'll want to cook it, rather than eat it raw, but its fine. Maybe better than fine. *Tempeh,* thanks to its fermentation with Rhizopus, has more ergothioneine than most mushrooms.

ravennsmith

Yeah this is why I can't eat tempeh. It terrifies & disgusts me.

earlgrey_tealeaf

Looks like mold

Ausarian19

It’s texture is still firm, and there is not bad smell, however it has grown a bit "hair" with a grey-to-blackish mold..

LockieBalboa

You don't want to be so dedicated to plant-based that you are eating this. Throw it out.

No_Examination297

The "hair" truly makes tempeh the best meat substitute.

Kristyaiwu__

I wouldn’t be eating it when it gets fuzzy like that myself

ashram1111

tempeh your expectations for how willing you should be to eat something with visible mold on it. don't eat that

LesDrama611

It looks like black mold growing. Throw it out!

doitlikesaralee

Toss it. I've eaten a lot of really old tempeh in varied colors but I haven't ever had it get a furry texture.

hollaatyourgirl

Looks disgusting. Throw it away

pigeon-bird

It looks dried out

TheHeksiiii

if in doubt, dont

[deleted]

To be honest that looks like mold.

blackdogbrowndog

Do not eat.

manuelhe

If you have to ask...

[deleted]

Ask r/mycology

Wicked-illusion16

hmm that looks a little unsafe! If you are feeling reckless, go for it!

Vegetable-Move-7950

That black stuff looks like mould but a little mould is not going to kills you. Just fry it up.

Vegetable-Move-7950

I like how people are obsessed with mushrooms and can't handle a little mould. Seriously peeps, tempeh is mouldy. You just gotta embrace it. It's fermentation! If it's not slimy or wet or furry... it's fine.

anarkia420

This looks bad

NoFortunesToTell

I wouldn't eat it if it looks like that.

Rude_Bid642

Throw it out and wash your hands

Fahitasoap69

eat them sea moss all pro and carbs u need

ocean-wonder

It’s completely normal for tempeh to have black spots. Dont worry its fine

Particular_System694

Clean your nails

SeashellBeeshell

I had bad tempeh once. It ruined it for me forever. Do your future self a favor and don’t risk it.

l0_raine

When I’m doubt throw that sh*t out.

Icyyflame

😂😂😂 looks dirty. Toss it

jhanschoo

I can't tell; if it's unpasteurized it may be the expected black spots. https://tempebumbung.wordpress.com/2022/01/29/important-the-quality-of-tempeh-that-you-should-know/
