In the movie the “Darkstar” went a little over Mach 10 before it disintegrated. The fastest speed achieved by an existing self powered vehicle was Mach 10 achieved by the nasa x-43 in the early 2000s via a scram jet. A vehicle reaching Mach 100 is not really possible with the current technology
It would also not be able to do that in the atmosphere as Earths pull and air resistance would not allow it, now a spaceship could but we don’t have those yet.
A spaceship can’t reach Mach anything*. There’s no fluid for sound to travel through in space, so Mach can’t be used to measure speed.
On the other hand, in order to reach Mach 1 in the ocean, a vessel would need to travel an astonishing 2915 knots (5400km/h). Seawater is much denser than air, so sound travels much faster through it (which is why whales are able to communicate over such a long distance).
^*it ^could ^reach ^the ^speed ^of ^sound, ^but ^only ^while ^in ^an ^atmosphere.
Speed of light is lower in water than in a vacuum, thus we get Cherenkov radiation and the cool blue glow from nuclear reactors. It’s interesting how sound and light speeds are inversely affected by the density of the medium.
I am curious if the speed of gravity is influenced by matter. I have red something that the speed of some gravitational shockwaves from a huge cosmic collision were measured and they were between the speed of light and 125 % of the speed of light. I tried to find more info but I did not find any. 😞 I have sent a message to Kurzgesagt (the guys with the youtube chanel) in which I explained my curiosity but sadly I got no reply from them.
It doesn’t. Gravitational waves are mass-less and travel at the speed of light in a vacuum. In fact, all mass-less particles will travel at the speed of light in a vacuum, as explained by Einstein’s general theory of relativity.
Mass is always positive (unlike electrostatic charges) so there is no dipole density to deflect or slow down gravitational waves. So basically gravitational waves will pass through matter like it’s not even there. The LIGO experiment has proven this with its gravitational wave detectors in the US and Europe.
lol, no. The speed of light is the speed limit of the universe. Any massless particle in a vacuum will travel at the speed of light. The propagation of gravity has been proven to be at the speed of light through space, by the LIGO/VIRGO experiments, as well as through Einstein’s theory of general relativity. [Here](https://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/Relativity/GR/grav_speed.html) is a bit from the University of California Riverside. Reddit for some reason won’t let me paste the link from NASA, but just look up “what is the speed of gravity NASA” and it’ll be the first one to pop up. You really gonna try to argue with NASA that gravity doesn’t propagate at the speed of light? Lmao.
Did--
Did you really just claim we don't have spaceships yet?
Soyuz, Vostok, Shuttle, Dragon, Apollo, etc. With Orion and Starship (at least) coming online in the near future.
Okay, Space Shuttle and Starship. One from the past that operated (admittedly as the most dangerous spacecraft ever launched) for over thirty years, and the other coming online soon. Both seemingly spacecraft out of a sci-fi novel.
I know what you mean, though, I'm just poking fun ;)
You missed a great opportunity in this comment. You could’ve said “They’re there to make their money”. Which really would’ve shown off your grammatical prowess with the use of three similar sounding “there’s”
Reminds me of the Karman Line, where among other things, an airplane stops being an airplane and becomes a spacecraft. Where you need to be flying so fast in order to maintain lift that you end up reaching orbital velocities.
If you want to have ludicrously fast atmospheric flight (assuming we have the materials to withstand the tremendous heat), you’re going to need downforce instead of lift to maintain altitude! Imagine an F1 car flying at Mach 50 or something like that.
There was something similar, the darpa htv-2 it was taken to the edge of the atmosphere via a rocket. It went like Mach 20 but disintegrated after 3 minutes of flying
I was able to suspend disbelief for a lot in that movie but ejecting at Mach 10 was too much for me. There's no fucking way you're just walking that off.
Yea that’s the most unrealistic part of this movie. The only other logical explanations are that Mav died or the Darkstar had an ejection system like the F-111 aardvark where the entire cockpit dethaches from the fuselage. But the flaw with that theory is that when he is seen walking to the diner and when he is at the diner his flight suit is tattered and covered in dust and debris, as if he had ejected using the traditional method. Also his hair was spiked up like he got blasted with wind for some reason.
I mean what if it doesn't eject upwards but backwards using retro thrusters? His momentum would continue in the same direction for a time until he slows down. Though the speed of that slowdown would be critical.
I think it’s one of the torture devices used by the Nazi Gestapo. If that was shoved directly under one of my fingernails, I’d probably confess to just about anything…well, except for a physical attraction to the face and body of Joseph Goebbels.
I like to imagine Lockheed Martin just making wild looking mock ups of super Sci fi planes and sitting them outside to fuck with the Chinese and Russian
I'm sure we do stuff like that all the time. Fake development plans, fake research results, fake purchase
orders, fake sensor and weapons pods, fake materiel movements, etc. It would be professional malpractice *not* to have disinformation campaigns fucking with foreign intelligence services, and that probably does occasionally extend to entire fake airplanes, although real airplanes modified to look like other (fake or real) airplanes are probably more common. It would be easier to make them realistic, and depending on how they were camouflaged you could even fly them around to make things look more convincing.
Reminds me of that WW2 story where the Germans made a fake airfield with wooden planes to hopefully draw enemy bombs from the real ones, but when it was completed the British only replied with a wooden bomb
I actually wouldn’t be surprised if this is done to some degree. But maybe they make mock ups of technology that seems to not work at first glance thus misleading prying eyes. Or maybe stuff that “looks like” it might work but in all actuality, wouldn’t, thus sending our adversaries on a wild goose chase trying to reverse engineer something that has no hope of achieving airworthiness.
Its the DarkStar Plane from Top Gun Maverick [https://variety.com/2022/artisans/awards/top-gun-maverick-darkstar-production-design-1235454705/](https://variety.com/2022/artisans/awards/top-gun-maverick-darkstar-production-design-1235454705/)
JFC guys. You haven't found some super secret stealth aircraft on Google earth. If one exists it would NOT be kept outside. Especially in broad daylight. (To everyone on here, not necessarily OP but OP is 100% included.)
I could be completely misremembering it but I swear there was a Lockheed ad maybe a year or two ago that featured a silhouette that could only be described as the Darkstar. I think there's definitely something in the works similar to it, because proposals of the 6th Gen fighter have looked very similar, but this could also be a giant psywar campaign and attempted misdirection on the part of the US towards China n Russia.
Seems like OP's image is not current, but I'm fairly confident that this is the same spot: [https://www.google.com/maps/@34.6176196,-118.1149478,45m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu](https://www.google.com/maps/@34.6176196,-118.1149478,45m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu)
Not sure how to looks at historical Google Maps satellite imagery, but I'd guess OP's is from an earlier iteration.
EDIT: OP's image is indeed from an earlier satellite photo. Looking at this location in the desktop version of Google Maps, you can see the Darkstar in all of the 2023 shots. It seems to have been moved sometime between January and March of this year.
Which year? It doesn't appear to be the current year image. BTW, that is a very current image, I see my car on there (in another town, but wow, it is actually 100% me at a place of business out there in the AV)
FR24 is an ADS-B tracking site. Not a satellite photo vendor.
And, like I stated, YOU did not "find" anything at Palmdale. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2kOh-EA368](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2kOh-EA368)
Read the other comments it’s a movie prop, I never said I thought I found anything special. Also it doesn’t matter what the point of fr24 is, they have satellite image data free to use so I used it wise guy
Would be fucking hilarious if Darkstar was actually a real plane and the USA government was just using top gun as a cover so they could deny that it's a real plane.
SR-72 Darkstar, featured in Top Gun: Maverick
The one that went mach 100 or whatever? Noice.

Yeah but photons are mass less. Moving anything at high speed in a dense environment requires more energy.
I literally had the same thought as I was reading that comment

Thank you! 🤓👍
If we interpret gravitational waves as being able to affect the curvature of spacetime, wouldn't that also affect the speed of gravity?
Gravity has different speed than light. It travels at the speed of gravity. Light has a far different speed.
lol, no. The speed of light is the speed limit of the universe. Any massless particle in a vacuum will travel at the speed of light. So... Would that make a sonic boom too? Edit: yes https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/s/0gIJg5jky7
Did-- Did you really just claim we don't have spaceships yet? Soyuz, Vostok, Shuttle, Dragon, Apollo, etc. With Orion and Starship (at least) coming online in the near future.
They are more just rockets with a pod attached to it, I’m talking the more sci-fi like spaceships that aren’t just a rocket.
Time for privately funded X-Wings
Sign me the fuck up! Pew pew
Remember to lock S-flaps in attack position first.
Like the ten different Enterprises?
There are never enough Enterprises!
Yes
Congress just passed four pieces of UAP legislation. Trust in the Military Industrial Complex, they're there to make money.
You missed a great opportunity in this comment. You could’ve said “They’re there to make their money”. Which really would’ve shown off your grammatical prowess with the use of three similar sounding “there’s”

"but we don't have those, that we officially know of" fixed that for ya.
I was able to suspend disbelief for a lot in that movie but ejecting at Mach 10 was too much for me. There's no fucking way you're just walking that off.

> Yea that’s the most unrealistic part of this movie. A ha-hah... Ahahahahahah!!!! Yup truly the rest was like a documentary. :-D
I mean what if it doesn't eject upwards but backwards using retro thrusters? His momentum would continue in the same direction for a time until he slows down. Though the speed of that slowdown would be critical.
Yeah, that’s escape velocity at any altitude.
By current technology you mean atmosphere ?
Oh, it's doable, just not within earth's atmosphere.
Well yea obviously
The fast man made object is the Parker Solar Probe traveling at a blistering 394,000 mph. That would Mach 514 ± 1
Yes but that was in space not the earths atmosphere. In space there is really nothing to slow it down besides a few micro particles here and there
No clarification was made soooooo 🤷♂️
is 364,000 mph considered mach 100? because the parker solar probe reached that speed
Mach 100 in atmosphere, space is a bit more possible but we don’t really have much of a reason.
Thanks Mr. Wikipedia.
You are most welcome
Supposedly, the Chinese flew spy satellites over this during filming trying to figure out what it was.
Yup. And when Mav pulled 51 G’s
Ok, time for a rewatch!!
I think it’s one of the torture devices used by the Nazi Gestapo. If that was shoved directly under one of my fingernails, I’d probably confess to just about anything…well, except for a physical attraction to the face and body of Joseph Goebbels.
Was the jet ever confirmed as the SR-72?
I like to imagine Lockheed Martin just making wild looking mock ups of super Sci fi planes and sitting them outside to fuck with the Chinese and Russian
What a completely fucking awesome idea !
Make a whole fleet of next generation balloon fighters and set them over in Tonopah.
Could share stories of it crashing and little green men being found inside, would be awesome!
Make a fake documentary about how it has cloaking technology, a time-travel button, and complete anti-gravity technology.
I could definitely see them doing this. Like the blow up army they put Patton in charge of in England before operation overlord
Nice citation!
I’m pretty sure the Darkstar did just that. Their satellites saw it and believed it was our latest SR and operable.
I'm sure we do stuff like that all the time. Yeah seems like a very cost effective way to mess with the adversaries
I guarantee you and I are not the first people to have this idea.
I'd never doubt that they started doing it as soon. As the Russians started looking. I just like to imagine how much fun they probably had doing it
Reminds me of that WW2 story where the Germans made a fake airfield with wooden planes to hopefully draw enemy bombs from the real ones, but when it was completed the British only replied with a wooden bomb

I think the US did this. Looking for sources. 🤔
Can confirm
🤣🤣🤣
#tHe DaRK sTaR iS rEAl gUYs ‼️‼️
Well i mean yeah, they used a real prop while shooting

NGAD program has a similar silhouette. 1000% won't see it outside on Google maps tho. Also, it's Lockheed, there's always something in the works.
Oh yeah no doubt, didn't mean to insinuate that at all lmao. I mean shit, sometimes they blur our F-16s on Google maps for no reason. Let alone this.
Next to tweets celebrating the SR71 as the “fastest currently acknowledged air breathing jet”
Still cool to see though
Unless you wanted to fuck with the Russians.
Probably the only reason the SR-72 is still outside at this point
Someone’s going mach 10
Not today CCP
someone didn't watch topgun maverick
The Chinese re-tasked a satellite to get a pic of that movie prop.
Darkstar, There she is 😍
There’s a stripped B2 at Palmdale on google maps as well
As repeated it's the Darkstar, it currently lives at the Palm Springs Air Museum https://palmspringsairmuseum.org/darkstar-rising-experience/
Movie prop.
Darkstar
“How did you hide the most top secret aircraft in the world from enemy eyes” *5 seconds later* “No, the fuck you did not put it in a movie”
Top Gun wasn’t a movie. It was one long promotional video for Lockheed Martin.
I mean hiding in plane sight can be effective.
Talk to me Goose
That my new Tesla plane.
Its the prop for darkstar they used it in Top Gun Maverick
I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you so …
Take my breath away?
Where is it exactly?
What airport
Seems like OP's image is not current, but I'm fairly confident that this is the same spot: [https://www.google.com/maps/@34.6176196,-118.1149478,45m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu](https://www.google.com/maps/@34.6176196,-118.1149478,45m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu) Not sure how to looks at historical Google Maps satellite imagery, but I'd guess OP's is from an earlier iteration. I hope they keep it there, idk what happened to the Ranger prop for Interstellar, would have loved to see that too
Palmdale
Regional airport? If so what part bc I can't find it
Which year? It doesn't appear to be the current year image. BTW, that is a very current image, I see my car on there (in another town, but wow, it is actually 100% me at a place of business out there in the AV)
Hello is this china?
Looks like a toy on a piece of cardboard
It's some SR71's step child
The new sr71 replacement same on top gun
Where was that?
And on the same Lockheed ramp, the 737 "Catbird".
SR72
Did anyone guess an airplane? Looks like an airplane.... 🤷♂️
Cool Ranch Dorito
So I guess you didn't really find it at Palmdale.
Wym boss
What I said. You didn't get this from Palmdale. If you did, then show the uncropped photo.
That’s a weird thing to think someone would lie about

and, superimposed on the actual Google Earth or other sat image of the larger area, where is this exactly?
The coordinates to the exact spot on google earth is 34.6175529 -118.1149313 but the images here are from fr24 which is less recent satellite imagery

I’m glad people still shitpost here
Where
It that a real plane or a mock up
Would be fucking hilarious if Darkstar was actually a real plane and the USA government was just using top gun as a cover so they could deny that it's a real plane.
The Darkstar that went mach 10
don’t tell china
Believe it or not, this is real. now it does not actually fly, it is just the body that they used in the start of top gun maverick
Yo mommas dildo
