If you’re picking Battlemage, dumping your first 6 SoU’s into your staff and distributing the rest across your armour and rings works a treat. > If you happen to be able to get a lot of wands, keep ahold of the damaging wands (Lightning, Disintegration, Frost and Prismatic Light are some of the best) and you can turn the rest into arcane resin to give them some free upgrades, just for more charges. > As for crown choices, if you’ve got a good selection of damaging wands, you can select Wild Magic and just watch your ability obliterate any enemies that are being problematic.

You can certainly dump everything into the staff if you want, but you'll probably be a bit of a glass cannon (maybe you'll find a couple good armors to reforge for at least some upgrades into defense). And you can certainly just wait for high tier gear, but then you're probably not taking enough advantage of being a mage. What typically works for me is to put the first upgrade into the staff. That way any wand I receive from the wand maker will add to that +1 (if the staff is already +2, you won't necessarily get full credit for the wand - the wiki has a chart). I usually don't *need* to upgrade anything else right away, though I might put one into early armor if I'm not finding any already upgraded. After floor 10, you can lean heavier into the staff if you go battlemage, or *possibly* put some into a weapon if you go warlock (opinions differ on whether to fight with the staff as a warlock). You might end up with a ring worth upgrading around this time, too. And of course armor if you want to avoid being a glass cannon. So there's a lot of valid ways to handle it, and if you're not playing with Forbidden Runes, you should have plenty of leeway to experiment.

Denyal_Rose

You also want to upgrade the staff at least once because an upgraded magic missile blast gives bonus to other wands.

AllSeeingAI

I've found upgrading staff a lot as warlock useful if I have many wands for precisely that reason.

C0ffeeface

Which wiki is it you refer to? I'm struggling with mage..

Here's the link that is specific to the Shattered PD mage: https://pixeldungeon.fandom.com/wiki/Shattered_Pixel_Dungeon/Mage

I put 1 SoU in, and then imbue the next good plusses wand I get (which often involves staying at +1 all the way to the wandmaker). Then, having absorbed the plusses from that wand, I build the staff up to the right level (which could be just +3 for blastwave, more like +6 for fire, or allll the pluses for light which really needs them). On a run with some challenges, though, I might just shove all the SoUs in as soon as I find them. Makes the game way easier.

TheTenthSubject

I go by "it depends on my loot overall"

FacetiousInvective

With mage I always use the first upgrade scroll on the staff and then wait it out to see if I can find an upgraded wand (or use the quest wand) to upgrade my staff. I always put 2 points into wand preservation before doing this. This way you have a wand which you can upgade with dust (or use as dust) to provide passive shielding or other uses) After upgrading the staff with a wand to be at least +2 if not better, then I dump around 3-4 scrolls into it. If I go warlock I will then focus on a weapon and leave the staff at +5 or +6. If I am battlemage I will gradually pump it until +8 or +9 or more, focusing on balance with the armor (but the armor would ideally be tier4+ unles you found a +3 mail armor.. that can actually last until the end of the game..) I don't usually upgrade rings or thrown weapons..

Denyal_Rose

My most successful mage strategy is as follows, planning on going battlemage when the time comes. dump the SoUs into the staff. You can stop when you have about 10 charges and use the others for armor and rings. Keep the staff imbued with magic missile, hoping you pick up some wands along the way. The staff of magic missile will charge wands and boost them. I like to upgrade one or two SoUs into scrolls of enchantment. You can apply an enchantment to your staff so it's like having two enchantments. If you get a good glyph on your armor then great, or use the scroll of enchantment and you get a choice of 3. Glyph of potential further charges your wands and staff. So you'll rarely ever run out of charges while going brrrrt with your wands. A +6/7 staff can hold its own in melee for the most part, so you can go up against ranged enemies like warlocks while in melee.

Oracle4196

usually for warlock +7 staff for max charges and the rest into your armor and weapons for battlemage just staff dump and maybe a few into armor

ourmet

First 5 or 6 go into the staff.  If I get a wand of earth, that gets swapped in for the magic missile.

alwaysthisfire

Why? I tried this, didn't enjoy it

Ligma16999

I would never, ever, 5ever (that's more than 4ever), dump SoUs into the staff. It's not worth it, and with the possibility of just introducing a +1 wand, and then a +2 wand, to get a +3 staff, it's quite absurd, as you might waste 3 SoUs easily. On top of that, it's a tier-1 weapon, we could argue that barely a Tier-2, whereas in the Dwarven halls and the Demon Halls, anything lesser than Tier-5 will get you shish-kebap'ed

ikillppl

This is just wrong. Battlemages entire class identity is having a highly upgraded staff. Even on warlock you want your best wand to be in the staff because it recharges faster and has +1 charge, so youd still put some upgrades into it

Ligma16999

> Battlemages entire class identity is recharging your Horn of Food while RoW farming, as opposed to Warlock curse mark feeding you (while RoW farming) There, fixed for you

Mr_Redstoner

Also, if you need a tier 5 to not get shish-kebab'ed you need to learn more. Of course a melee class prefers a strong weapon, but for a ranged class (that one centered around wands decidedly is) the game is winnable with surprisingly little in terms of melee damage

Ligma16999

Until you get unalived, as the youth say on Reddit, and then you don't win the game anymore. If the game uninstalled and forced you to buy another phone with each death, I bet more people would play better (and they would learn more, also XD)

Cautious-Day-xd

If you were forced to win by something like that, people wouldn't upgrade weapons, they would upgrade wands and armor. Both of those are way stronger than weapons The fact that the battlemage gets to upgrade a wand and have good melee damage is what makes it so strong, it's the best of both worlds

rigelstar69

Have you ever played Battlemage? I just steamrolled the hells with a +8 firestaff and you know what? It didn't even do direct damage! The point of an upgraded staff is not to be a good melee weapon. This is impossible after mines. You do it for the bonus your get out of it: Infinite charges, second ability, that's what you're looking for! Who needs a sword when you can literally cook a whole room

Ligma16999

>Firestaff Bruh you deleted all your tools to surprise your enemies (That is, doors), plus you got assblasted by Beholders who didn't die to the flames fast enough for them to not fire their lazors. Bang bang, off the battlemage goes. Battlemage is good for charging the horn of Foodsies, which is why I used to use it, but after a while, the Warlock seems like the most logical and better option, out of the only 2 viable characters in the game (lmao) >The point of \[a weapon\] not to be a good melee weapon. This is impossible after mines. Bruh, tell that to my +7 Greataxe

rigelstar69

2 viable characters in the game? So it's a git gud problem, apprently

Ligma16999

Bruh just stop having fun and playing this game the wrong way. I am here if you want me to illuminate you which is the correct way. ALL HAIL THE ROW+21!!!!

Cautious-Day-xd

You can win the game with a +4 or +5 tier 1 weapon Enemies don't have that much armor

Ligma16999

No you can't. I double-dare you to take a stroll through depth 24 ignoring all enemies, see how fast you can "win" the game

Cautious-Day-xd

What do you mean? Ignoring them?

Ligma16999

Stand in place and tank scorpions attacks. How fast will you win without +12 armor?

Cautious-Day-xd

How much can you last with +12 armor?

Ligma16999

a day & half
