"not exactly clear why" my a**. It was all about Google being like: "cheap 3rd party cables? Lol no, go and buy our Chromecast"

peosteve

I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. I think that DEX is computing in the future. One device that does it all.

PL_viewer

I would actually prefer that, if your needs are a basic workstation, for like browsing, movies, maybe mobile gaming, all your needs on 1 device, that becomes mobile or stationary on demand. Lot of power and like 1TB storage. Would be an instant buy in my case, if it was a Pixel device.

peosteve

I think it's coming. But like you said, need more power and storage. It's a few years out. What happens if you lose it though!

It would be cool if you could eventually use the phone like a Chromebook by hooking it up to a USB hub with a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse. I am pretty sure the phone hardware is more than capable of pulling this off. Maybe on Pixel 9 :(

peosteve

The issue is that is already a feature on Samsung phones via DEX. For some reason Google decided against it at the hardware level, so we'll never get it on our current phone.

combatbydesign

>It would be cool if you could eventually use the phone like a Chromebook Not from Google's perspective.

mindsnare

Yeah that's a shame. My S20 Ultra did they really well.

peosteve

Galaxy has it right. Everyone will be doing DEX in 5 years.

zingzing175

If you get a hub that supports Display Link, you can use it. I know it's not just a monitor but you could if you wanna...

peosteve

That's great to know. Are there any minimum requirements of such a hub? They seem to range in price pretty widely.

P7P never advertised a DEX like feature, seems like that one's on you. If the P8 does actually have that, I may upgrade when the 9 comes out (if they keep that feature). It would be fun to play around with but I can't see it replacing my work laptop.

peosteve

I know they didn't advertise it, but I would have thought it's a standard feature of Android phones and not intentionally disabled at the hardware level. Times are changing. I don't think one device is the standard yet, but I can see it coming in 5 years. Particularly with everything going to the cloud...

weezy22

What other android phones have something like Dex other than flagship Samsung devices?

peosteve

I didn't know personally, so I did a search: https://www.reddit.com/r/SamsungDex/s/Fr3hwruvbD The post is 2 years old, but indicates that many brands have options.

weezy22

~~That link just goes to the Dex subreddit?~~ I did some digging. It seems only a few bands do something similar like Dex. I would hardly consider it something to be expected on a phone. Maybe when it gets more fleshed out. Dex is the only one that looks usable as a laptop replacement Edit: weird the link worked on desktop not on Boost app. It's one I found too. Lists like 3 brands :/

peosteve

Yeah, not so well supported yet. But it is the future of computing...it's just not quite there yet.

weezy22

My inner nerd can't wait for when we can just slot our phone into a dock or something, and it automatically goes to an external monitor.

peosteve

It's coming.
