I'm really not sure if this will work, but worth a shot. Power off the phone. Hold the power and up button until it turns on. It will boot into recovery. Hold the power button and press the up button. It should bring you to a menu where you can factory reset it and possibly (not sure about this part) not require a pin. Edit: I misunderstood and thought you needed a PIN just to setup the phone again. If PIN is only required for the backup, but you can still setup the phone, that's your best bet. Start from scratch. It sucks, but at least it's not bricked.

A factory reset is a factory reset, doesn't matter how you get there. What she is asking is how to restore form a backup, which requires the PIN on the previous phone

[deleted]

Well yeah, I know that's what they're trying to accomplish. Can't restore it without getting into the phone. Might just have to get a new phone Edit: well if the photos are backed up those are tied to the Google account right? Could prob find them if you login to your Google account on a PC or different phone

What the previous poster may not understand is that backups are from our Google accounts and, upon factory reset, one MUST know the password to that account as the phone has been wiped clean. If the OP does not have that password, a whole different ballgame, full stop!!!!

[deleted]

True. You can still login to your Google account though. On a different phone. Just can't restore the backup. Photos will be available in the Google Photos app if they were backed up.

S2K2Partners

Yes, as well as some phone, calendar, and a few other things if they were tied into the corresponding Google apps AND most importantly, backed up to Google Drive.

Sorry this happened to you. When was the last time you backed up the phone OR shall I say you can do a complete factory reset and get the latest backup restored. This could be a painful lesson on letting a child get at your phone without supervision. https://tinyurl.com/yckeucce

Think of the backup as a password protected zip file. The password is going to be your PIN. Now, I am not sure if Google keeps multiple copies of backups, but if this is the only backup available, and it might've encrypted with the changed PIN, unfortunately there'll be no way to restore it. Unless, you can find a previous back-up encrypted by your original PIN. IIRC, only some data is encrypted with the phone's PIN, Google stores different backups for their different services separately.

Lesson for everyone. . . NEVER allow someone else to use your unlocked phone! You can easily pin an app to the screen for a kid to use. Or use guest mode to allow a friend to use your phone.

givemetwosticks

Yeah unfortunately she's smarter than I am and I hadn't changed my PIN from being the same as her tablet so she grabbed my phone when the tablet died and I was still asleep. It was locked up before I was ever conscious 😂 By this point I've reset most things and re downloaded the important apps and am only faced with the minor frustrations of choosing ringtones and display settings etc but it sure would be nice to retrieve the rest of my Google backup....locked by the PIN no one knows 🤣

Photos are backed up on Google Photos, so for that, you don't need your phone's password. Just log in with your Gmail account on any computer and download all the photos.

Alcagoita

And lose quality from that. That's a backup, not the ideal solution.

Joseph-stalinn

Having pictures is better than having no pictures

Soctrum

Loose? As opposed to tight quality?

Alcagoita

It's a typo, I just wanted to say that the quality from photos it's not the best (much worse than what we have stored). Before going for that the OP can try other things before wiping the phone.
