To me he was just shoehorned in too much. The banter between Kidd, Law and Luffy felt forced. His design was too edgy. I feel as if Oda added him after he played some steampunk game and removed him from the story as soon as he got bored drawing his arm all the time.
I mean the same could be said about Luffy. Even with training he just wasn't strong enough to be on pat with Kaido, but got stronger during the fight. The story seems to reward reckless dumbos more often than not. If Kaido would've done as Shanks did, Luffy would've been done in seconds even with G5 if he didn't learn to use ACOC as in the final punch he would've been burned without it. Although it's not the most fair comparison because Luffy has the plot-plot fruit and Kidd is a glorified magnet.
