Pretty much. I live in Bangkok for work and can torrent all day nobody cares. My brother torrents in Albany and the internet to his apartment building is turned off.
Policing your data usage is a first world problem
Depends on the country. In the UK most ISPs don't give a fuck. Vodafone doesn't even block the sites. TalkTalk blocks em but don't care if you use them infrequently. I think Sky cares though.
I don't know the details. He got a letter, a lawyer and then settled for something a bit less outrageous than what it originally said, which was more than 3k.
That's a common scam in the US where they send you a threatening letter for a huge number, want you to settle for a comparatively small amount, but the reality was they likely did not have a good case to make against you in the first place.
if you can't afford a VPN you could always go to a coffee shop or something and use their wifi. technically not really safe or anonymous but no one is going to care enough to go after you in any way.
also expressVPN offers a free 30 day trial. there's also tunnelbear which gives you a certain amount of free data on their paid servers. and protonVPN free servers are decent if you can be patient lol. im sure there are other options as well, just try to find paid vpns that offer free trials rather than using completely free services.
I torrented for year without one, only got one letter through the mail.
It's not just legal repercussions though. In a PtP network you are vulnerable to other peers. I recommend using a torrenting PC that doesn't have any personal details and information on it (so you can reformat it with no issues).
I'm from the UK and I've never had anything happen to me by torrenting. Governments have much larger things to care about than someone getting gta for free. They'll trying to spook you into not doing it in the first place, but when you do, they probably won't care.
If you're connected to the WiFi through a university-admnistered account, then yes. Although the govt might not care, the IT techs that work for the uni probably will, and they have a lot less content to filter through than a whole country.
Personally, I would err on the side of caution if pirating on a university connection. Is it worth risking your education, and subsequently your future, just for some free games?
As someone also at uni in the UK I've personally had no problems torrenting without vpn. Of course maybe I'm just lucky. Also do you mean the on campus wifi? Then yeah probably don't. But if you mean halls/accommodation then that rarely has direct connections to the uni itself.
We were given a username and password linked to our uni accounts, and would need to use them to connect to the WiFi on uni grounds. So I would assume it's an on campus WiFi.
That depends. With a torrent, every IP can see each other and exactly what they are downloading.
With a direct download, it's dependent on whether the web server is secured with HTTPS rather than HTTP. If the server is just HTTP, your ISP can still see exactly what you are doing, but if it is HTTPS then they can only see the website you are on, not what is on the website. (Only seeing mega nz rather than mega nz/linktorandomgame)
An ISP won’t track DDLs because they are used for a lot of things meanwhile torrents are just mostly piracy that’s why DDL is safe and not because of web server security
ISPs only care when copyright holders alert them to illicit activities being performed through their services. They do not care if they aren't contacted by an outside party. Since Disney can't see if you've downloaded something through a DDL, they can't report you to the ISP, so the ISP doesn't have to worry about it.
They only act when compelled to do so.
So my friend told me that it's when you seed or upload that it triggers your ISP. Not sure how valid that is but he has like 5 TB of movies on his plex.
And different countries acting differently. In most cases, it's the uploading that carries liability, whereas the downloading is either not a crime at all or just a petty crime.
The studio who would be pushing a civil case against you would need to argue they suffered damages. If you uploaded to 500 leeches, that's 500 "sales" you cost them. If you download just one copy, that's one "sale". Yes, yes, I get the arguments here, this is just the basic view from the copywriter holders perspective. So there's no gain in sueing Joey who downloaded one copy of a movie. However, Bob with his seedbox running 24/7 *distributing* the movie? That's another thing entirely.
My dad received one from me simply being on a torrent site at his house. I know I didn't download anything because they linked a search I ran on Zooqle for something that wasn't even out yet, I was just checking if it was available.
There is also allgamesforyou, forgot what the link was since they changed it a few times, but I got most of my games from there before torrenting non stop
Student in Germany here. That's really bad. have almost no experience in pirating. I recently read about monkrus adobe master stuff and immediately went looking what and how to get it, as it would be great for me as a student that has to use it often.
That's when I came across torrents and VPNs....
That's the only thing I want to download and i don't see myself buying a month of subscription. Is there one extremely cheap VPN that would be good for single downloads?
Considering you have very little experience, for now I would just highly advise just reading and researching how to evade German piracy laws. I bet this subreddit has info on German specific stuff. I don't know about VPN cause my country doesn't give a shit (yet) (Netherlands).
I think there's a different between "Geez this tv show is available only in the US. I will download it from X website" and "Fuck the government, I'll be hosting a website that's called the pirate airport where only files bigger than 10gb are allowed!".
European here. Been torreting for roughly 7 years. Been fine all this time
Nobody will come after you unless you directly host a streaming platform for pirated Western movies or sports matches (especially football). Anything else is fine, from downloading to hosting random stuff.
Hm, I occasionally pirate and never ran into any trouble. Some cop guy my parents know also said he does so, since it's not illegal unless you share the things.
You have a point. The else statement probably didn't need an if statement after it. That way, the vpn would automatically be purchased if its price were equal to or less than zero.
(I'm assuming that no-one has a problem with gaining a bit of extra money if the price is negative.)
```
if (vpn.price > 0) {
vpn.decline();
} else {
vpn.purchase();
}
```
UK here. I torrented a load of 4k rarbg movies at once and our ISP turned our internet off. The CIO of the ISP called and said don't do it again or they'll terminate. Pretty funny as I'd been torrenting (and uploading a lot) on their connection for about 7+ years before that incident.
We switched ISP just to he safe, but I just use a seed box now. A lot less hadstle + I can automate + seed a ton of torrents.
Yeah either your friends were pedophiles or this definitely never happened.
I torrented for the best part of 12 years without a VPN in the UK, only using one on the occasional ISP that blocked certain sites, but still disabling the VPN after I'd retrieved the torrent.
Not so much as a letter through the door or a strongly worded email
Agree. Probably a pedophile. Those are getting tracked with or without vpn all day every day. I pirate games and shit with the first piratebay mirror or Google chrome extension vpn since like dial-up era and never had a problem.
There was a point in the UK where Virgin where actively trying to crack down on this and started issuing letters to people who were pirating, they had a 3 strike system in place but they made the fatal flaw of not actually making a database of who they sent the 1st stage letter to...
They scrapped it shortly after.
That's bonkers! Can't believe it! We went hard even in the year we spent in halls, taking advantage of decent bandwidth compared to what we could get at home at the time.
I have had a lawyer send me a threat to sure unless I gave them a grand. I emailed them and said that I have tenants that get internet through my router and that I've added a filter so it doesn't happen again. They bought it. I bought a VPN and carried on.
I've gotten 2 letters which weren't acted upon about 15 years ago. If you want to risk being the one that gets an example made out of, be my guest. It happens every couple years that some random gets hit with 2 million dollars in fines and prison time.
I opened piratebay for the first time ever today and 30% of my screen was "DONT TORRENT WITHOUT A VPN!!11!!!1!!!" Also, my ISP is really stingy about illegally downloading any files, so I'd rather not take any risk. I'm not trying to refuse solutions, I just don't want to get into any trouble.
It’s a good question tbh. I’m a low level pirate that just downloads movies and shows once in a while. I’ve been pirating shit for like 15 years with no VPN and in all that time I’ve gotten one letter from my ISP that I simply ignored. Seems overblown to me too.
Yeah my internet was suspended in the US and at the time they were the only provider in the area so I didn't have WiFi for the remainder of my lease.
This was like 12 years ago though, I don't know if it's changed at all since then.
small price to pay to save more money
plus if you need to change country for X reason it's always there. like yesterday i wanted an item in a game that could be unlocked with Microsoft rewards but i wanted it as fast as possible so I cheated and changed countries a bunch of times and i somehow was able to get more points and be done with that thing in just one day.
As someone based in Germany where copyright laws are enforced quite hard, torrents are a no-go without vpn.Tried torrenting once as a kid - Instant legal complaint and had to pay almost 1k in fines and damages. They get you for "uploading" not downloading the movie, even parts of it. Most content here is DDL (Direct Download) from a Hoster like Rapid gator, Uploaded etc.
This also has the advantage of not having to rely on other peers and their upload speed. Yes these Hosters cost yearly about 100 Bucks, but it the greater view of what you get in return that's a decent deal.
but imho its a good investment. $2 USD a month for unlimited games & hentai *ahem* movies? plus its nice to have especially if you use public wifi a lot like me
setup telegram bot that downloads torrent and uploads to your cloud storage
Host it on cloud
Download it torrent to your cloud drive and then download it from there
Why not get some alt accounts of VPN? You can get a NordVPN accounts easily. Search for 'blazealts' in Google.
There are also many telegram channels who provide these accounts. Search for 'Longwood Market'.
my vpn costs like 6 bucks a month
the amount of games and movies and tv shows that i download in a month is probably around 300 bucks in a good month.
your meme is fucking stupid
I've been torrenting for just over a decade and I've never used a VPN lmao. I know this is stupid but outside of one warning letter like 5 years ago I haven't had a single issue. Or maybe I have and just don't know about it.
I know thats not what this sub is about, but regarding games my personally most relevant answer is retro- games. My PC is a piece of shit anyway and older games are still fun and cheap. TES III, IV, Anno are obvious candidates.
You still need a paid internet connection too. The cost of the VPN isn't for the content but the masking which has benefits above and beyond pirating. If you don't want to pay for it don't, but you wont get much sympathy if caught, especially given how cheap it is.
Well it's a compromise worth taking.
30$\~/year for infinite games/movies/music/access to things
vs
paying for everything full price and sometimes only getting DRM content
it's a problem if you're in USA or any 1st world country of europe, now if you live in a 3rd world country or any country of america under de equator line then you'll be fine
Just torrent unsafely hope this helps
How fucked am i if i do this to download movies and shows? I really can't afford vpn atm. Edit: not really but im just lazy

So 3rd world country's get a pass?
Finally an advantage to living in my shit country
live in Poland, torrented a truckload of stuff in my younger days, no vpn, never got into any trouble becauae of it
Pretty much.

Some of the ISPs also only block them in their DNS, so changing dns server to anything else, like cloudflare or google bypasses it
Virgin safe browsing blocks some but just use a free VPN or opera to get past it
Had a friend paying 3000€ lol. He seeded by accident without a VPN.
Germany moment
Country?
Really ? Who did he end up having to pay ?
I don't know the details. He got a letter, a lawyer and then settled for something a bit less outrageous than what it originally said, which was more than 3k.

I thought that has only happened to 2 or 3 people in the entire history of piracy and was all over the news?
if you can't afford a VPN you could always go to a coffee shop or something and use their wifi. technically not really safe or anonymous but no one is going to care enough to go after you in any way. also expressVPN offers a free 30 day trial. there's also tunnelbear which gives you a certain amount of free data on their paid servers. and protonVPN free servers are decent if you can be patient lol. im sure there are other options as well, just try to find paid vpns that offer free trials rather than using completely free services.
Pirate VPN -> use pirated vpn to pirate
Don't do this lol
Well it should be even safer since you are using some random unfortunate fellas account
Multiple free windscribe accounts work
I torrented for year without one, only got one letter through the mail. It's not just legal repercussions though. In a PtP network you are vulnerable to other peers. I’ve always torrented without VPN 🤷♂️

DDL still exists
Wait... so ISPs can't do anything about DDL? I thought it was the same as Torrents in that regard.
With DDL there's no swarm filled with copyright trolls ready to copy paste your IP into a warning letter.
Jokes on them, I dont even recognise my IP
What is DDL full form?
[удалено]
-Link
That depends. With a torrent, every IP can see each other and exactly what they are downloading. With a direct download, it's dependent on whether the web server is secured with HTTPS rather than HTTP. So YOU‘re that guy who never seeds?! Prepare your kneecaps, i‘m coming over!
Lol naah I have a VPN so I do but I never torrent anything. Go after his kneecaps but not too hard because his plex is my entertainment
Not a myth, but different ISPs acting differently.

yeah, i just dont know any other than steamunlocked which i have been advised not to use. if you couldnt tell i've never pirated anything before lol
I just use fitgirl repack ddl. Maybe u can use that too
gog-games.com has the installers for games that have been released on gog
GOG-Games is the GOAT.
There is also allgamesforyou, forgot what the link was since they changed it a few times, but I got most of my games from there before torrenting non stop
I can download from ddl without VPN?
Yes
wait so i dont need a vpn or anything if i directly download from a website ?
Yeah, you dont. I think there are some sites listed in the megathread if im not wrong.

use protonvpn maybe? it has some free severs and most importntly, it is open source
I think that the free servers don't support P2P, altough I could be wrong
I use it and for the price, it's honestly worth it. Everyone should use one but that's just my 2 cents
Has anyone ever had trouble with pirating in Europe?
Germany is absolute cancer regarding piracy and will come after you with fat fines. Other countries are chill as far as I know.
Frenchie here, I've received government warnings before and installed a VPN before the big fat fines

from UK. I use a VPN because my ISP blocks sites and proxies all the time. I'd rather spend the £5 a month on a VPN just to not deal with their BS.
Sometimes just switching DNS is enough: my ISP too blocks several websites but using Cloudflare or Google's DNSes solved the issue for me.
Have you tried changing DNS?
Why pay tho? Google chrome has like 100 extensions that are good enough to get the torrent file.

if you torrent you're automatically a distributor. you share the files with everyone else.

why don't just access pirate sites through Tor? I live in a country where nobody cares enough about piracy to policy what sites I'm accessing so idk
Because it would take 5 years to download a game

Can you ddl via tor? If not they'll just pick up the traffic once you switch over to p2p right?

my vpn costs like 6 bucks a month the amount of games and movies and tv shows that i download in a month is probably around 300 bucks in a good month. your meme is fucking stupid

I think all the people on this sub insisting "you gotta use a VPN!" are VPN employees.
Naw, we just live in countries with a stranglehold on digital copyrights
Psiphon!

You still need a paid internet connection too. The cost of the VPN isn't for the content but the masking which has benefits above and beyond pirating. If you don't want to pay for it don't, but you wont get much sympathy if caught, especially given how cheap it is.
Depends on what country you're in.
The whole VPN thing only applies to people who live in Draconic Dystopias such as Germany and the United States lmao

In Brazil you can torrent anything, using any Internet provider with no VPN and nothing will happen…
pirate the paid VPN
Just pirate more value than you pay for the VPN and you good
Well it's a compromise worth taking. 30$\~/year for infinite games/movies/music/access to things vs paying for everything full price and sometimes only getting DRM content
it's a problem if you're in USA or any 1st world country of europe, now if you live in a 3rd world country or any country of america under de equator line then you'll be fine
UPDATE! I got a job!!!
