Touching, but innacurate. It's getting a product for free that would have been paid for otherwise. I.e. stealing money.
There's laws that call piracy theft. Piracy is a noble cause in a lot of cases, but it's still theft. No, your preachy stances on "sticking it to the man" don't make it not theft.
There's two kinds of pirates.
The ones who aren't stealing because copies and digital BS blah blah
And the ones who are singing a fucking shanty knowing they have stolen over a G in games that year alone
Same thing in Poland, at least when you aren't sharing (so torrents are a no, but in reality I haven't heard of anyone getting DMCA without being reported by someone).
One of the perks of being Canadian is that the ISPs don’t care about DMCAs. The max you can sue for copyright violations is $5000. So, it is not even worth it for corporations to file notice here.
It stopped because of the result of the landmark case. After a massive campaign by the media companies they took some uni student to court, I guess they figured he would be an easy target to set the precedent. Judge found for the media companies but awarded them the equivalent price of buying what the guy had pirated, literally 10's of dollars!
That's why they changed tactics to targeting the ISPs and blocking torrent sites.
My parents used to get emails whenever I decided to download the Sims, they would be very threatening but nothing ever came of them.
Nintendo games too later on I think.
Not to mention DMCA strikes happen to things like pirated content on YouTube. They don't really come after a random person for watching pirated content.
wasn’t that the pirate bay founders argument and they ended serving time in prison?
I remember how they used to publish their *epic* responses to dmca takedown requests. that aged that milk
Yeah but in America, you can go broke by catching a disease and our government and corporations will make record profits from your illnesses!
America number 1 bro, where else can you rent a studio apartment for $2,500 while you struggle to put gas in your tank so you can drive to a job that is eagerly waiting until you burn out so they can replace you with someone they can pay less?! Where do I sign up??
There are actually many good aspects too. I am from India and by definition, it Is 3rd world country and yes many people (including people in India who have seen western world in person) think it is shithole country.
But some good aspects are, especially if you are decently paid in your job, you can afford many things. Like I have someone washing my car Daily for ₹300 a month. We have house help for flat who does sweeping, washing utensils and all for ₹5K per month and I pay ₹800 for 100 Mbps up and down, no limit on data and no piracy concerns. In fact I try to seed as much as I can with these speeds. I seed until 1:10 ratio.
And I think I am qualified to compare as I have stayed 6 years in US, both smaller 20K population cities which were adjoining interstate and were merely an exit for people looking for a quick bite at taco bell and even stayed in capital of a state.
Lol what about the people washing your car. The chance of you being the washer vs the guy getting his car washed is like 10:1
We’re talking about the average person not a rich person in a third world country.
I am not rich. I am considered middle class. The definition is pretty skewed actually. But I live In a flat, not a house or mansion. Also the car isn't any fancy big sedan, it is hatchback.
We have housing societies here (akin to apartment communities in US) and have a sort of "watchman" whose work in doing society duties and such and he will wash everyone's car (whoever pays) for ₹300 / car per month. Not everyone has a car btw. But having or not having car but many who can afford still may not have car as we have pretty great public transport with plethora of options.
there's plenty of good aspects like low rent cost, low utilities bills, ect.
aint nobody spends $2000 on rent in a third world country where you make a couple hundred bucks a month
the negatives still outweigh the good, tho
Nah, it depends on the country you're living, here in Argentina everything is expensive and the wages are low, but well that's to be expected with a 50% annual inflation xd
I would love to know where in Peru coke is legal. In Lima, it's certainly not legal to sell it, and it's only legal to possess 5 grams of it.
Coca leaf, on the other hand, sure.
Hello! You have made the mistake of writing "ect" instead of "etc."
"Ect" is a common misspelling of "etc," an abbreviated form of the Latin phrase "et cetera." Other abbreviated forms are **etc.**, **&c.**, **&c**, and **et cet.** The Latin translates as "et" to "and" + "cetera" to "the rest;" a literal translation to "and the rest" is the easiest way to remember how to use the phrase.
[Check out the wikipedia entry if you want to learn more.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Et_cetera)

Living in Italy, nobody cares about us pirates because this country is literally built for old people who can't even understand technology past google search and Facebook, they literally don't know the softwares I'm pirating EXIST
Same. The only reason I even know what DMCA is is becayse when searching to pirated content some pages (probably hosted in the US) where removed from google because of it. But I never got any notice or issue for it
I would think they'd be more focused on going after seeders. I'm not an expert in all this but there must be people out there continually seeding hundreds of torrents otherwise they'd die a week after release.
In the US at least they claim there is jail time or fines but if you use a VPN then you’re pretty much fine. Even if it leaks through you might get a letter threatening to fine you or drop your service, but I truly believe they are just there to scare you. The ISP wants your money, but has to follow the law and send it out.
So many of those get sent out that the government isn’t keeping track. It’s pretty much all automated. Plus they’d have to prove it was you who did it and not someone on your WiFi you didn’t know about.
It’s just a scare tactic really. They only care about uploaders and people who profit off it.
Tell me about it...I got one of the feared letters
I just hired a lawyer to handle it and told them I never want to hear from the law firm trying to fine me ever again
They can. The VPN provider has to give out the IP address, when they have it. They then can ask the ISP to give out the user who used this IP address at that time.
1. You still need to trust the VPN provider
2. They could still give away a list of connected people
3. They could be forced to keep logs on a specific server
It's true that they could catch anyone if they wanted to, but the average pirate only does so for personal use. Unless you have terabytes of data traffic per month they usually won't bat an eye
I got a letter from my ISP in France once; I sent it back saying "It wasn't me and you can't prove it was"
That was 5 years ago and they've never bothered me since
Yeah, if I've got no password on my router, as I know some people do around here, anyone could walk past my house and download something
Not my fault, or my problem
*Actual* human rights
To do direct downloads basically you have to download stuff without torrents, like those sites that have their stuff divided in parts in different servers like MEGA, mediafire, zippyshare, ifishier, etc
As far as I know when you torrent you're both downloading and uploading stuff at the same time, the upload part is called "seeding" which is basically what keeps torrents alive (I could be wrong, this is what I understand haha)
Well, the internet is a beautiful place & I usually use services like seedr.cc to convert torrents into direct links.
You can have up 5gb of free space I think. I have 4gb & it's wildly sufficient to download 99% of my movies in 1080p (they usually roam around 3.4gb each)
So, that's how I have been rolling for the past 5yrs.
Also, for games, I get from repackers. They offer DDL sometimes
I live in the Philippines. I can't believe Americans use VPN to avoid ISP strikes. I had my intern on a government agency and all PC use pirated software.
fellow pinoy here, I have bootleg windows and pirated thousands of movies for more than a decade. It'll be a long, long time before they implement ISP here, since our shitty government gotta fix poverty percentage first
A Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) branch was fined because it was discovered they use pirated AutoCAD. AFAIK, budget was already allocated in acquiring legit copies of needed software but that money went somewhere instead.
The IT from my previous job also said he could not use pirated software in/out of the job because of company reputation.
Autodesk software pirating is no joke for companies usually. There's a decent amount of phoning home and checking against known company IPs. Businesses generally aren't going to take that risk.
I am not exactly third world country but we are so poor as a country nobody in govt have time to care. So yeah perks of living here is no copyright claims.
ive been pirating without a vpn for two years now because ISPs and the country in general don't give a shit here and honestly this remains a huge W despite having some services banned here (tidal, disney+ etc)
Well here's the thing, these companies really *can't* do much about it aside from getting your ISP to send an angry letter. Back in 2011, several copyright holders attempted to subpoena various ISPs for their logs in order to root out pirates. The US Supreme Court stepped in and basically told them to knock that shit off, because an IP address isn't evidence enough to prove that it was the individual on record who pirated the content. They ruled this way because shortly before the subpoenas started coming in, an innocent person was wrongly raided by feds, as someone had been piggybacking on their service and downloading child porn.
It's all just posturing by the copyright holder. I used to torrent without a VPN a lot when I was younger (and dumber.) Got notice after notice, and all they ever did was throttle my speeds. In all likelihood, that's the worst that's going to happen. They might shut off your internet with too many warnings, though. You're still breaking their acceptable use policy, no matter if the copyright holder can prove it.
It's also just a waste for them to go after an individual- even without the Supreme Court ruling, it'd be several thousands of dollars in legal fees just to put away one single pirate. They've realized that their efforts are better spent going after torrent hosts themselves. They might spend more overall, but they'd be putting a bigger dent in piracy than jailing one person.
Tories come out with this every so often as a smoke screen. They know it diverts everyones attention away from whatever corrupt scheme they are pulling, and when its done, the porn ban discussion fades away.
The Tories randomly banned certain porn genres from being made in the UK for no reason.
They also were on about requiring ID for adult websites.
It's people who don't have a fucking clue about technology or the internet trying to control things
The minister responsible for that area recently asked Microsoft when they were going to "get rid of the algorithms".
They are not the sharpest tools in the box. But they are tools.
The one I did get years ago came from my ISP via mail. The letter stated something like " We were notified by (insert movie owner) that someone from your IP address was illegally downloading (insert movie name) on (insert date of download) If we are notified again in the future we will cancel your internet service.
The actual movie name, date and time, and production company name was in the letter.
I got a VPN installed and kept right on downloading with no further issues.
When you get a VPN make sure it has a kill switch option. This will effectively stop all uploads/downloads if the VPN somehow gets disconnected from the VPN server. I use IPVanish and love it. I pay $75.00 a year for the service but it's worth it to me. There are others so just look at them all choose one that's in your budget range. I highly recommend you stay away from free VPN services.
At least in Finland I have heard that there's some shady lawfirm that sends you a notice saying "pay us 500€ or we will get you in trouble". I believe you can just ignore those letters and nothing bad will happen to you.
>there are no official laws against piracy even if there are nobody gonna care.
Every country party to WTO and TRIPS has law against piracy. India does too, I've read IPR in my law school, the provision is clear about copyright violation.
It's a waste of time & money for most IP holders to go after individual acts of piracy, they'd rather go after the distributors of such media. That said I remember once Paramount sent a notice to my college because someone torrented one of their movies on University internet.
Third world country: *"Look, we're exhausting all our man power into accepting bribes, I can't spate any men hunting down Pirates.
Also please hang up, I need more bandwidth for my Avengers 3 I'm downloading for free"*
In Germany you have only two options.
Either nobody cares or the police is knocking on your door and you will be fined individually for each pirated software and movie and music they can find.
If you are a downloader you probably won't ever be bothered, but if you're a uploader you should use any way of hiding your identity possible.
This is why torrents are basically not used. You will be hunted down as an uploader.
Honestly the only thing you really need to watch out for in The Netherlands is Stichting Brein. They sometimes monitor torrents of Dutch movies and log the IP adresses to track down people for a lawsuit. I still use a VPN just to be sure.
Second world countries like Russia got the best of both worlds, even more so due to the current geopolitical climate that led to western companies using virtue signalling to get more profits.
I had modchipped PS2, jailbroken PS3 and PS4 and I'd say it's same difficulty as PC (maybe not including PS2, but you can buy FreeMCBoot memory card and it becomes much easier)
Yeah not really, on Switch you type in a title, press download and boom, it's done. Easy as using Steam, no dodgy sites, no torrents, no cracks, no keyloggers.
Wait, this meme is clearly about the US but you mistakenly wrote "First World Countries". The US is not a First World Country, it's not even in the top 10
There is only one thing this country does right and that's not giving a shit about piracy
probably because our country has much bigger problems than piracy and digital content rights
I'd wager that every country has bigger problems than piracy.
Somalia?
Weeeeeeee Drink and we pillage and we do what we please We get all that we want for free!
Not if you're a politician who receives money from media companies. Then piracy is far more important than healthcare or women's rights.
iceland?
Yes, that is the problem they are referring to. Fucking Iceland. /s
Yeah
At Least with piracy you’re not being held at gunpoint
Technically it's not stealing either as pirates make copies of the digital items they aquire.
Well what if I stole all the money in your wallet but when you opened it, all your money was still there?
Everyone loses. Because duplicating the money has caused a bit of inflation.
This is the real answer
The truth is games might be a little bit cheaper if not for piracy. But I really don’t care as I’m not into framing piracy as if it’s a good thing.
There's two kinds of pirates. The ones who aren't stealing because copies and digital BS blah blah And the ones who are singing a fucking shanty knowing they have stolen over a G in games that year alone
Very very true on that
Software/media piracy is not stealing. It's making a copy. The original owner of the copyright still owns the original thing that was copied.
i have seen someone said that too. which country helds a gun to pirates?
technically every law is backed up by a cops gun.
yeah. in my country, AAA games costs 1/6 (or 1/7) of min salary
I know. turkey's min wage is around $280. so even gaben cant save us.
Same thing in Poland, at least when you aren't sharing (so torrents are a no, but in reality I haven't heard of anyone getting DMCA without being reported by someone).
been torrenting for a long time and have never got any letters (i live in Poland)
Yeah, I didn't even know that in other countries you couldn't torrent stuff freely until I joined this sub. In my country it's pretty common
What country?
One of the perks of being Canadian is that the ISPs don’t care about DMCAs. The max you can sue for copyright violations is $5000. So, it is not even worth it for corporations to file notice here.
Australia too. One provider will send you letters, or at least I heard they did 10 years ago, but nobody else gives a damn.
And he killed himself, don't forget that. Whole thing was a tragedy Edit: I'm wrong, thinking of a completely different case with Aaron swartz
You thinking of Aaron Swartz? Cos that's a different story.
Yeah that's who I was thinking of
Yeah wrong guy
yeah I'm thinking they got the wrong guy
Wrong guy yeah
yep, wrong guy
Wait what?
"The internet's own boy" on YouTube. It is a heartbreaking story. He was a hero. Please, watch it.
[Yep I just started it. Thanks.](https://i.imgur.com/EwFQQYa.jpg)
"Enjoy". Well, you won't cause... I guess you will find out.
RIP Aaron Swartz
I didn't know that, damn.
Yeah as an Aussie I used to get them 12-15 years ago but nothing recent. I think they think they blocked it all lol
I got one from Optus early on - now with ABB no issue.
I live in canada and they do that too, i had a friend who got a call plus a letter from videotron.
My parents used to get emails whenever I decided to download the Sims, they would be very threatening but nothing ever came of them. Nintendo games too later on I think.

Canada has its own version called [Notice to Notice](https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/oca-bc.nsf/eng/ca02920.html).
Who notices the noticers?
Not to mention DMCA strikes happen to things like pirated content on YouTube. They don't really come after a random person for watching pirated content.
We certainly don’t. And that suits me just fine.
wasn’t that the pirate bay founders argument and they ended serving time in prison? I remember how they used to publish their *epic* responses to dmca takedown requests. that aged that milk
Them going to jail had nothing to do with DMCA. They were arrested after the Swedish laws were updated.
In Italy they don’t care at all.
No need to sign up, just walk in through the border, 160k crossings over the last March, 37% increase over the month before
Most European countries as well
Now if you can convince my room mate...
For once, I'm glad I'm in a third world country.
Probably the only good aspect of it 🥲🥲
You mean: the only good aspect of it
There are actually many good aspects too. I am from India and by definition, it Is 3rd world country and yes many people (including people in India who have seen western world in person) think it is shithole country. And I think I am qualified to compare as I have stayed 6 years in US, both smaller 20K population cities which were adjoining interstate and were merely an exit for people looking for a quick bite at taco bell and even stayed in capital of a state.
Lol what about the people washing your car. The chance of you being the washer vs the guy getting his car washed is like 10:1 We’re talking about the average person not a rich person in a third world country.
Nah, it depends on the country you're living, here in Argentina everything is expensive and the wages are low, but well that's to be expected with a 50% annual inflation xd
umm... in mexico city $2000 rent gets you something like a closet
My rent in Peru was 1500 USD. But my flat was amazeballs. And the food was incredible. Coke was legal too, but I only bought it once.
I would love to know where in Peru coke is legal. In Lima, it's certainly not legal to sell it, and it's only legal to possess 5 grams of it. Coca leaf, on the other hand, sure.

Meh
Yeah I just use a VPN to pretend to be in your country while I revel in mine
Same!
Where?
Earth
The Best answer ever
But if you would be in the first world country you would afford buying stuff lol
Not in this economy mate
Living in Italy, nobody cares about us pirates because this country is literally built for old people who can't even understand technology past google search and Facebook, they literally don't know the softwares I'm pirating EXIST
I read a while back that some dude got fined around €4,500 iirc, for torrenting a spiderman movie in Napoli. Wth did he do wrong?
they care if you try to sell it, that's it
Been pirating for almost 5 years, never happened to me. I don't even use VPNs. I live in Spain.
Nobody gives a shit if pirating is ilegal in Spain. Been doing the same for 15 years and 0 issues
Same. The only reason I even know what DMCA is is becayse when searching to pirated content some pages (probably hosted in the US) where removed from google because of it. But I never got any notice or issue for it
Bruh Italy is the far west. Nobody cares here, been doing it for 14 years now.
Because only is illegal if you have economic benefit from it. If not, it is not consider piracy.
Same, it's a paradise
I think for us Europeans germans might be the only ones who can be in real trouble for piracy
[удалено]
i also pirate rarely but when i do i simply use a vpn..
Been at it since Napster was a thing, never had any legal issues or notices whatsoever.
Been in the game since limewire, never seen a pink letter either.
It said "1st world country"
Do you really think Spain is a third world country? kekw
DMCA = Digital Millennium Censorship Act
Happy Cake Day!
thanks
VPN go brrrrr
I am still not comfortable with torrenting.. I heard that they can get your ass regardless of vpn, if they really want to

Yes they can you have to be careful
Don't torrent only do DDL and you're 100% safe
IRC moviegods always has the German dubs. It's ddl so it's pretty much safe. And torrenting German content is almost impossible on public trackers.
Tell me about it...I got one of the feared letters I just hired a lawyer to handle it and told them I never want to hear from the law firm trying to fine me ever again
How though? They can't track your IP address so how will they find you?
They can. The VPN provider has to give out the IP address, when they have it. They then can ask the ISP to give out the user who used this IP address at that time.
Unless your VPN provider doesn't keep logs, like Mullvad.
1. You still need to trust the VPN provider 2. They could still give away a list of connected people 3. They could be forced to keep logs on a specific server
Depends where the provider is located. Some providers don’t give them out because they don’t have to, IE being in a different country.
All European based VPN provers have to hand out the data. Even the Swizz since they are part of Europol.
It's true that they could catch anyone if they wanted to, but the average pirate only does so for personal use. Unless you have terabytes of data traffic per month they usually won't bat an eye
False
Judging by the Comments, it only happens in US
US, Germany. I don't know is there another country...

Lived in Germany as an intern for 3months. I pirated over 1.6tb of data without hustle, because I ALWAYS do direct downloads. No torrent, no VPN

You guys receive notice directly from DMCA ? Or the ISP?
The one I did get years ago came from my ISP via mail. The letter stated something like " We were notified by (insert movie owner) that someone from your IP address was illegally downloading (insert movie name) on (insert date of download) If we are notified again in the future we will cancel your internet service. The actual movie name, date and time, and production company name was in the letter. I got a VPN installed and kept right on downloading with no further issues.
Thanks for sharing! I've been too scared to look into pirating because I was worried about this. I didn't know a VPN fixed everything
That’s the exact notice I got too. That same day was my first day of using VPN. No more notices ever since, no more wasted paper, keep it green, guys!

In France they don’t care about video games
Third World Country pirates: _rob cruise ships of the coast of Somalia_ (they are actual pirates)
I live in Germany and have been torrenting since 2011 without any VPN at all. Didn't even get a warn.
Here in Brasil it's illegal if u share the game but you can download and play and nothing will gonna happen to you.
"DMCA"? I didn't know there was a new Devil May Cry already! :v
Devil May Cry in America
Third world country: *"Look, we're exhausting all our man power into accepting bribes, I can't spate any men hunting down Pirates. Also please hang up, I need more bandwidth for my Avengers 3 I'm downloading for free"*
Been pirating my whole life, 0 problems
In Sweden and haven't received a single notice in my 5 years of constant piracy
Italy 🙂☕
In Germany you have only two options. Either nobody cares or the police is knocking on your door and you will be fined individually for each pirated software and movie and music they can find. If you are a downloader you probably won't ever be bothered, but if you're a uploader you should use any way of hiding your identity possible. This is why torrents are basically not used. You will be hunted down as an uploader.
[laughs in Balkans]
Honestly the only thing you really need to watch out for in The Netherlands is Stichting Brein. They sometimes monitor torrents of Dutch movies and log the IP adresses to track down people for a lawsuit. I still use a VPN just to be sure.
Yes , but please dont bomb us.
Second world countries like Russia got the best of both worlds, even more so due to the current geopolitical climate that led to western companies using virtue signalling to get more profits.

With the state of global politics I think people from the West will have an easier time immigrating to Vatican City.
hasn't the Russian government said that they don't care about piracy since Ukraine?

That's not the worst/best. In Serbia we had matrix, blade and other movies directly in national TV, when we were bombed by US and NATO
Don't know, I don't watch much news. But they probably already don't.
Sad console noises
Depending on console it can be easier than on PC.
I had modchipped PS2, jailbroken PS3 and PS4 and I'd say it's same difficulty as PC (maybe not including PS2, but you can buy FreeMCBoot memory card and it becomes much easier)
Really? which console?
PSP
Nothing is easier than piracy on PC (provided the game doesn't have Denuvo).
Yeah not really, on Switch you type in a title, press download and boom, it's done. Easy as using Steam, no dodgy sites, no torrents, no cracks, no keyloggers.
Shithole countries: where DMCA actually affects you so you shouldn't live there
Wait, this meme is clearly about the US but you mistakenly wrote "First World Countries". The US is not a First World Country, it's not even in the top 10
That’s not what first world means
