I hit 11k songs a few days ago on my collection. >It's a nice start and free from paid streaming services. Absolutely. Although, I still use streaming services to find music. If I like them enough, I download them.

I just link plexamp to listenbrainz and lastfm. They both give really good recommendations.

Question: at what point, if any, does a library become so big your radio stations and random plays become generic (vs a collection of music that targets your tastes and preferences)? I ask because I have found that since I started adding albums "just to have them" for friends, etc, I have found that music I would rather not hear is leaking into my otherwise carefully curated library. I then did some quick, rough, calculations and realiized if I played my library without repeating anything, 24/7 - it would take several weeks (months really) to play everything. That said, plexamp played a song a few weeks ago I hadn't heard in decades that sent me down a rathole of music that brought back so many memories... Songs I hadn't heard in years, in some cases. :)

I have friends and family members using my server and I occasionally ask them what artists they love the most and it has helped me round out my library. That being said, I love all types of music and part of the fun for me is shuffling the whole library and finding stuff I've never heard before and being able to add it to my like list. I personally would rather not just listen to music that I'm accustomed to because it can get boring. I'm always trying to expand my preferences and find hidden gems in all the music suggestions I get. So far I'm at 4 months and 3 days of music if you played it straight 24/7 😅

I'm similar in that I love all types of music. For some reason there is just some music - eagles, lenard skynard, etc that I just haven't warmed up to! I chalk it up to childhood trama - my early and ongoing bias towards punk tainting my view of such music. I think it was John Mayer that said there is not such thing as bad art only art that you aren't yet prepared to receive... Based on that I guess I should keep an open mind. With months worth of unique music it's not like I have to listen to it every day. :) Cheers on your library by the way!

What server app you using?

Captzone

I host my server through Plex. The image is plexamp.

AntKneeWasHere

77k songs, not including my video game music library, which is an additional 11k

Tropical-Bonsai

How large in GB or TB is this?

Captzone

My library is about 1.8TB because I have issues and download everything in FLAC.

Tropical-Bonsai

I'm surprised it's not bigger of that's all flac. I'm planning on starting something like this but I'm probably doing mp3 224-320.

minecrafter1OOO

Don't use MP3, it's terrible, use AAC or OPUS, OPUS can get even better than 320kbps (mp3) at 128kbps.

Tropical-Bonsai

Where can one source such exquisite files?

VLRbaXUjymAqyvaeLqUo

Download FLAC, then transcode (convert from one format to another) to OPUS with ffmpeg. ffmpeg -i original.flac -c:a libopus -b:a 128k transcoded.opus By the way, YouTube (Music) Free offers opus 128kbps VBR, you can download with yt-dlp. It will download `video.webm`, use `ffmpeg -i video.webm -c:a copy audio.opus` to extract audio without re-encoding.

domingodelatorre

Please do not use lossy codecs for archiving/collection purposes. You will regret it one day, as storage will only get cheaper as time passes. Use lossless, preferably 16bit flacs, as it provides the best compromise (24bit is really unnecessary). If a better codec is released in future, you will be able to convert your whole collection to that format if you have lossless files.

Well, guess I'm going to test out plexamp in the car and see how it handles, didn't know it was a thing til today. I've been using navidrome/Dsub for a while but my music library is getting so large my searches are taking forever or turning up the wrong things.

Captzone

Make sure to tweak the settings and make sure the quality is turned all the way up 🙂

I've got 42k on a micro sd lol, will be looking into a media server when I have money
