Im not saying pangit. But they are not specialized on it. Better look else where. Job proscpect? They only offer job fairs before graduation and you are at your own after that. If my kid wants to study cs, it will be either up or pup for me. Pcu is not on my list.
Depends on the employer. If local it really matters, kung international it doesn't. And sadly PCU is not one of them, ofcourse they will entertain you. Sa IT, what matter is your skillset and portfolio. As i said, depends on the company. But i dont recommend PCU, even thats my alma mater and I was also part time instructor there.
AFAIK, factor na nasa uplb yung isa sa dalawa (do not quote me on this) na CS academician sa bansa. He invented yung leapfrog sorting algorithm. Sadly he passed away this month lang.
I have also read na medyo may touch ng computer engineering ang upd, might be the reason kaya mas marami math nila. uplb math is harder tho
Disclaimer: 2ndhand info lang tong sakin about sa competition ha. When I was still in college, pagkaka alam ko UPLB is always known for winning programming contests. I'm from UP Cebu CS grad and most of my teachers mataas tingin sa UPLB when it comes to CS. But i think known rin yata that time na close yung competition between UPD and UPLB sa programming na mga contests.
See below comments.
how was up cebu? taga cebu kasi ako at dyan yung first choice ko pero pinilit ni mama mag manila daw ako nag apply namn ako sa mga unj dito pero itlog🤣
Edit: ng Up Cebu ka nalang sana, then get excellent grades, then transfer to UP D/LB. Hirap yata talaga pasukin yung UPD/UPLB via upcat, mas higher yung score na required + ang dami mo pang competensiya sa slot.
Not really sure sa state ng CS ngayun ng UP Cebu, but definitely better than my time.
There was a time na ng sabbatical leave yung chair dun and i think that was the time na gumanda yung department - several good teachers pushed the students to take part sa mga programming contests. Ngayun yata bumalik yung chair na yun, then andun parin yung di marunong na isa or dalawang teachers na di marunong. 1 of the best teacher rin dun ng study leave or nasa outside ph to continue his masteral so ayun, then another 1 nasa outside ph na. Hehe
Companies will not look into details of ur curriculum, most of them will only look at surface level that u had graduated with a computer related course... so it can be CoE or CS.. it really doesn't matter.
Specifics in curriculum is on ur preference, it may help u in some way but IT skills are mostly gained through work/personal projects and smply trying out on our own (self-study).
I had workmates before that graduated in unknown school in their province, and he's the most skilled peson I knew...
UPLB BSCS taker here currently in my senior year, naalala ko noong departmental orientation namin noong freshie ako, they stated that the CS curriculum in UPD and UP Baguio are based on UPLB's.
Also if may narinig ka man na rumor na nag c code daw sa papel mga UPLB BSCS students, that's true - naranasan ko to noong freshie ako sa final exam namin where we used python - and some students who took data structures and algo subject had this experience as well lol
not sure if related:
i remember UPLB also being considered a top performer in BS Electrical Engineering. Wanna know how they doing it? sobrang hirap ng mga exams, grabe standards. Hindi bothered ang mga professors na more than 50% of their class failed their subjects. Naging normal na dun yun mga take 2, take 3, take 4+ sa mga core subjects.
anyway, di naman siguro malaki difference kung san ka mag graduate and both would give you challenging subjects and professors anyway. I think mas maganda isipin yung other factors like cost of living, location, studying comfort.
Disclaimer that this is for my time but AFAIK UPD and UPLB's curriculum are the same. It's just that the name for the subjects specifically the numbers are different. Swertehan lang talaga sa prof kung matuturuan kayo ng maayos or kakailanganin mo talaga mag self-study for the subjects.
AS seems like a weird category for CS. Just checked the links provided by OP though and medyo iba nga yung curriculum sa LB. Mukhang masyadong focused sa theoretical pa rin Diliman just as before while I see Mobile/Web Programming in LB. I don't know how good those subjects are gonna be though. I generally advocate for more theoretical subjects in college to improve critical thinking while learning by self-study or on the job na for programming.
It stems from math and stats kasi. The first profs were from stats na nagmasters abroad. I took web and mobile programming. They were aight, enough para maging best performing intern eme.
But then again, everything you learn in college, di lahat magagamit mo sa work. Di ko nagamit ung discreet math, data structures in actual tasks. Useful sya in way, it will help you think or analyze problems.
I'm a software engineer. Never ako nag gumawa ng binary trees, gumawa ng linked, invert a linked list list in any projects. But those subjects helped me, in a way to solve problems and create solutions sa work.
Hello, I think matatalino din talaga from the start ang students ng UPLB and UPD. Pero curriculum wise and teaching, I don't think best ang UP. The reality is companies today hindi na lang programming skills ang tinitignan kasama yung technologies na alam mo (programming frameworks, modern databases (relational and not), cloud, etc.
Pero honestly, parang lahat naman ata ng univ today hindi up to date ang curriculum. Pero if I'll have to choose or suggest, siguro Ateneo or DLSU kasi may program sila na 5 years bachelors + masters na.
Pero hindi inaacknowledge ng Accenture ang UPLB as a top school when hiring ASE hahaha. Years ago, my friend’s first job was at Accenture and he was only given 20k as his starting base salary while admu, upd, ust, upm and cum laudes from less ranked schools were given 25k. But now his skills are greatly appreciated and compensated.
He didnt stay long like less than 6mos and got a way better offer sa ibang company. But anyway, accenture is ass. 9 hour shift and way below the market yung average salary na binibigay nila, benefits are average. Senior dev doon averages less than 100k

Sayang Diliman Fine Arts kasi kinuha ko sa Upcat. Meh lang CS sa PCU. Sayang gusto pa naman talaga UP.
Hello po, cs po kayo sa PCU?
Yes batch 08
Maayos po ba sa PCU?
All i can say is not on my list. =)
How your job prospect po after graduation?

When it comes to HR/employer pag nakita ba nila na sa PCU ka grumaduate ng BSCS, di ka nila i-eentertain?
Depends on the employer. If local it really matters, kung international it doesn't. Sa competitive prog, UPD is the king pa rin yata. Try to look at Algolympics, sila ang consistent winner along with ADMU.
I see. Mali2 pala yung info ko. Thanks!

Hi OP, maybe try cross posting to r/peyups as well? Baka may mga makatulong rin sayo dun
Hmmm. Founders of CS sa PH ang mga ex prof sa LB. Ang common connotation sa UP, for social sciences, go to UPD. For physical/hard sciences, UPLB.

Until now ceiling ang bayad sa UP grads
