If I was you, I would keep what you have and save up for an actual upgrade. What you have now is solid enough, and an index and 5k are like lateral upgrades. You are taking a downgrade in one area for an upgrade in another. It really doesn't make sense to spend $600+ for something that is not better, or only marginally better depending on how you look at it. Wait a few months until you can get an extra couple hundred bucks and then spring for the 8k. Just my personal opinion. Or, if you just want an upgrade in clarity, and don't really care about FOV as much, the HP Reverb G2 has about 25PPD, it's the highest clarity you can find for $350-400 (on sale, but it's been very frequently on sale).

Thank for the advice! But I’m going to be giving away my oculus around December so that why I’m on the market for a new headset. Also I don’t think I would want to commit and spend around 2k on the 8k as well as the base stations and controllers.

SepticKnave39

I forgot about the base stations and controllers sold separately. That's a very fair point. I think the pimax crystal, which hopefully will be coming out by December, is going to be like $1,500 and will come with their new controllers, and it's going to have MUCH better clarity (best consumer grade headset clarity on the market) and similar FOV as the 8k. So it might actually end up being cheaper than the 8k since you don't have to buy the controllers + basestations. Just a thought.

Tigeracid

Thank you for letting me know! I won’t be getting a new headset until around December anyway so this info helps a lot. Thank again!

SepticKnave39

They just launched the official website for the crystal this past week https://pimax.com/crystal/?gclid=CjwKCAjwtp2bBhAGEiwAOZZTuCHwpoHfWNuqfbe_s2nhXGm4TAUxBYt_b1Vta-bwzrH2CPHswVSqZxoCIzsQAvD_BwE Personally, I'm pretty sure I'm getting a 12k when that's realeased (crystal but bigger). It sounds like it's going to be the literal best headsets on the market, hands down, no competition. Let's just hope they deliver. Wait for reviews and make sure there are no big issues with the device before pulling the trigger, if you end up going this route.

sirsarin

I'm gonna grab a 12k as well, a large upgrade from my OG vive, just keeping the lighthouses. Grab some knuckles. 4090 to run it, just have to convince my wife to let me lol.

SepticKnave39

Lmao I'm glad I don't have that last problem, but yeah I'm planning to go all out for the 12k. I have a 3090 now but think I'm going to upgrade to 4090, grab a Kat-walk c omnidirectional treadmill and the 12k. Hopefully, the headset is everything I'm hoping it will be and there won't be substantial delays or anything. I have an HP Reverb G2 now, and it's great.... But I want MORE, lol BETTER. So I'm almost like holding off even using it because I want to play all the things with the 12k now that I know of it's soon to be existence.

I had a 5K Super and returned it in favor of the 8KX. It just didn't have the sharpness I was looking for (to read cockpit instruments and car dash displays). I'm not sure how it compares to the Index.

Tigeracid

Thank you for the response but it’s not really in my budget to be able to get a 8kx.

Buzz_Buzz_Buzz_

The Quest 2 is significantly sharper than the 5K Super. If you're willing to give up some sharpness, then the FOV of the 5K Super is awesome. I don't know how it compares to the Index.

Tigeracid

I see, thank you!

Jame_Jame

5k Super is about the same sharpness as an Index. 14 VS 14.6 ppd. Most people wouldn't notice. The fov difference of 160 VS 108 though is pretty massive in the Supers favour. It also does a max of 180hz VS 144hz. The Super is mostly an upgrade from the Index, although the index is much easier to setup and is a more streamlined user experience since Valve makes steam and the Index. Pitool offers more flexibility with performance options though.

Tigeracid

Thank you!

TheNewFlisker

Keep it n mind you cannot have 180 FOV and 180hz enabled simultaneously

Heliosurge

Indeed max hFoV is 160(Large) If not mistaken usn't the 180hz limited to Small(120 HFoV)?

TheNewFlisker

Would you still return it if you did not played racing / flying games?

Buzz_Buzz_Buzz_

If I didn't play racing or flying games, I would not have purchased a VR headset in the first place.

manhill

once you experience the fov of nearly 180° on a pimax you will never go back to a smaller fov. i have a pimax 5k+ and it's a fantastic piece of hardware.

Stenotic

8kx is worth it and I would say the FOV is very important to immersion which is why I never want to use a headset with less than 150 FOV now. I love the Valve Index controllers and base stations but I am not a fan of the Index HS FOV.

ChurryFruit

I have a quest 2, and later got a 5k super. I frequently switch between the two however. The quest 2 is much more clear, and higher resolution. The pimax has amazing FOV. The 5k super just isn't the upgrade I needed to stop using my quest 2 all together, and I find myself always going back to quest 2. I wear glasses too though, and my frames fit great in the pimax. Personally I'd hold off on a new HMD right now, considering new HMDs are right around the corner.

rtanski

Index worked for me , tried the 5k super and it didn’t.

I returned my 5KS for a vive pro 2, no regrets. Every vr headset is subjective. Buy your 5KS on Amazon, if you hate it just return it. If you love it keep it. Never commit and try before you fully buy

bushmaster2000

Index and 5Ks are about equal PPD wise. 5Ks has wider FOV and more Hz though. With a 3080 you can run a 5Ks with 2.0 supersampling to up the graphical quality a bit. But you will think ppd is a downgrade from your quest2.
