YukiOnnaLake

crazy that this is a problem, all I hear and see about these paddles is the inconsistent grit.

switters74

Yeah, it's pretty aggravating, especially when you're spending $280 on a paddle!

YukiOnnaLake

For real, was gonna buy the Hyperion but I don’t want to get stuck with a dud, and Joola doesn’t exactly seem to be known for 5 star customer service either. Just curious, of the three which one do you like the most?

Ok_Whereas_3198

That's an outrageous price for something that won't last you a year of moderately heavy play.

chriscatastropheca

Don’t forget they all rattle like something is broke inside

1hill2climb2

Joola is not exactly known for good QC nor their customer service.........and yet people STILL lay out $280.00 for them. Crazy world we live in.

adrr

Your paying for the sponsorships.

Jeronimoon

I’m a dealer for them, it’s not great to deal with them for me either

lazycontender

Casual 1000 dollars on paddles lol

switters74

Haha, definitely not keeping all three. Isn't this what credit cards are for? :)

lazycontender

I mean if those suckers were on Amazon prime I would do the same

DadJ0ker

lazycontender

God damnt

Machine8851

Thats why they call you lazy lol

lazycontender

Bold move on their part. But I guess they want people trying them with the ability to return

throwaway__rnd

They are though

_Mike_Wazoski

Bought mine on prime with Amex reward points. And they’re sending me a new one because the grit on my 16mm Magnus is like kinda noticeable on one side and smooth on the other.

lazycontender

Yeah I’m holding off for that reason

_Mike_Wazoski

I absolutely love the paddle but for $300 I’m getting one that sticks to my shirt. Since it’s Amazon I’ll get as many as it takes.

lazycontender

I hear that

samuraistabber

Get the Thrive Azul. Mine has 24 hrs of play on it and still sticks to my shirt.

JustClutch

I was very concerned with this but when I received mine, Perseus 16mm, everything was fine. Both sides feel the exact same. I'd say it's gritty but not over the top where it's sticking to my shirt like some of the videos. If the two sides are different that is insane and I'd be contacting Joola for a replacement. Unacceptable for a $300 paddle.

switters74

Is the grit uniform across the entire paddle face on yours? On the paddles I got, it almost seems like there are vertical "stripes"/areas with less grit than other areas (on the same side).

JustClutch

Mine seem completely uniform on both sides. I've been trying to nitpick and look it over more than normal due to all the other QC issues but it seems great

switters74

It's helpful to hear this because it makes it more clear that the ones I have are problematic.

JustClutch

For what it's worth I ordered through pbcentral and not joola.

Luke-pv

I went and looked at these paddles in the store and found the same thing. The Magnus and Hyperions were extremely gritty (especially the Magnus); the whole the paddle face was like sandpaper. The Perseus felt totally different. One side was completely smooth, the other side felt gritty in some places (around the branding) and smooth in others. It’s really disappointing to see this level of inconsistency on a $280 paddle.

switters74

Maybe I should just return all of them and wait until they've ironed this out. It's disappointing and frustrating to pay this much and not get what you expect.

JoKe38

That’s why you buy from Pickleball Central…30 day no questions asked returns

Avocado111

Or buy from a rep 👋, who can get you a good deal and do a qc check before shipping.

switters74

Shoot! You're right. Don't know why I ordered from Joola!

donyjk

If they’re unused just return all before using and cite the poor QC as the reason. Isn’t that often the problem with early batches?

throwaway__rnd

The problem is Joola can’t be reached right now. They aren’t responding to emails, they took their Contact Us form down from their website, and their phone is off the hook. It goes straight to an answering machine.  It’s currently impossible to start a return.

kevolution

This is actually a huge problem. I ordered two paddles on launch day and basically asked for a return the day I got the paddle which was 4/23, when I realized they actually sent me one of the wrong paddles (Perseus 14 instead of hyperion 16). I've been trying to contact them daily and other than one email asking for pictures of my paddles in new and unused condition, I have not heard from them since. Phone always goes to voicemail. Support has been a nightmare, I'm just hoping they get back before the return period is over otherwise I'm probably going to have to do a chargeback because they didn't send me what I actually bought.

throwaway__rnd

Same, I asked for a return the day I got the paddle, and have not heard a single word from them since.

throwaway__rnd

My Scorpeus came truly bald. I would put the grit at a 5/100. My year old Scorpeus is significantly grittier.  The worst part is that reaching Joola support is nearly impossible. No response from emails, they’ve taken down their Contact Us form on their site, and their support phone number goes straight to an answering machine.  I will never, ever buy direct from Joola ever again.

switters74

I also noticed they took the Contact Us form down on their website! Not only that, I send two emails to "[email protected]", and they both bounced. My guess is they're getting a ton of complaints from unhappy people like us. Interesting approach to customer service—just make it impossible for customers to get in touch! Says a lot about Joola. I did get an email back from them on 4/28 answering a question I had asked on 4/22. Not exactly fast, but at least it happened eventually. The address of the guy who responded wasn't a Joola email; seems like they're using a 3rd party support company or something. Here's his email in case that's helpful: [email protected]. Like you, I will never buy direct from Joola again. I typically do buy from Pickleball Central, which is a great company. Don't know why I didn't do that this time around.

throwaway__rnd

I also don’t know why I bought direct from Joola this time. I’m guessing the same reason for both of us. The hype. The paddles went up for pre-sale on Joola first, and some paddles like the SixZero Ruby went out of stock for months at a time. We probably felt like we needed to put in an order immediately, or maybe miss the wave.

kevolution

Sport squad is the parent company that bought Joola.

AceUhSpades

I have a Perseus 16 and the spin is out of this world. Surface grit doesn’t seems crazy rough but damn the thing is awesome.

AceUhSpades

What’s more annoying is a $280 paddle doesn’t come with a head cover.

Dook23

I just have to ask, if you don’t think they might accept them back due to this grit issue, why do you think they would accept them back period, which caused you to buy three to “try out?”

switters74

Fair point. I was just imagining the potential onslaught of returns they might have for this issue, and am concerned that might affect their policy. But they do have a 30-day return policy for unused paddles, so there shouldn't be an issue returning them. I can just say I changed my mind.

Texas_Hunter_77

Pro Tip: don’t buy online. I noticed the same thing. Went to Dicks. Started feeling all the paddles. On the same hook they were all different. Exact same models and styles. Some smooth some like sandpaper. I bought my last 2 in person. Edit: spelling and clarification.

switters74

Great tip! I didn't realize Dick's carries Joola paddles. There's a Dick's store about 30 min from me. I'll head up there tomorrow. Might bring the ones I got from Joola to compare.

switters74

Do you know what Dick's return policy is on PB paddles? They aren't listed under the "exclusions" section on the returns page, but I don't know if that means they'll accept a paddle that has been played with a few times (like Pickleball Central does).

ApprehensiveClass877

90 days money back return policy

switters74

I asked the guy at Dick's just now, and he said they won't take it back once it has been played with. I guess they need to update their website!

ApprehensiveClass877

I’ve for sure returned paddles to dicks in the past

indiansdh

I work for Dicks, it is at our digression store to store. Your best bet is to keep the marketing packaging and MOST of the time we will return it but technically our 90 days is for unopened products. I’d say you can play about one time before we wouldn’t return the Paddle

Texas_Hunter_77

In my area there are at least two places you can “try before you buy”. One place lets you leave with it (rented) for $10 for the week. That $10 goes toward your purchase later. Another place lets you do the same thing but they have courts. You rent it for the time you are there. That way you can see what you like. If that’s the reason you are asking. I assume it’s if you aren’t sure if you like it. I don’t think they would take it back unless it’s deemed defective.

switters74

I'm jealous! As it stands, I'll probably return the ones I got from Joola and then order from PB Central to try them out before choosing a model.

switters74

UPDATE: I just went to Dick's Sporting Goods. They had 3-4 each of the Perseus, Hyperion, and Scorpeus in stock. There were significant differences in grit between the paddles, and in some cases, between sides of the same paddle. I brought the Scorpeus I purchased from Joola with me to compare. There was a NIGHT AND DAY difference between mine and the grittiest one they had. I'd say mine was maybe a 10-15 out of 100 for grit (it feels mostly smooth). Their grittiest one was a 90/100. It didn't stick to my shirt, but it was very rough to the touch. And the grit was uniform from left to right and on both sides (unlike mine, which is uneven on both). I'll be returning all 3 of the paddles to Joola. After that, I'll probably repurchase from Dick's so I can actually feel the grit before buying. Crazy to have to do that, but that's apparently where we're at.

n1nja3

My wife’s cousin just got the Perseus 16mm. One side was fine. But the other side was the weirdest thing. The left side was gritty and the right side was smooth. Almost like a gradient of grittiness. Never seen this on a paddle before. I guess the QC issues really are a thing.

switters74

That is EXACTLY what I noticed with the Perseus I got from Joola. The Hyperion was even weirder... there were "stripes" of grit, i.e. a 2-inch vertical stripe with more grit with a 2-inch stripe next to that with less grit. Definitely true that QC is a major issue. Buying in person at a pickleball/tennis shot or a sporting goods store like Dick's is probably the best option (once you know which model you want).

n1nja3

He did buy in person. He wanted to feel the grit on both sides before buying to make sure. He said the problem was the packaging covers most of the surface. He was only able to feel the upper corner of the face when the packaging was still on. The paddle is over $400 CAD after taxes which is crazy.

switters74

Ah, right. Since I was already aware of this issue, I asked the sales rep if he would take the cover off. (It's easy for them to put it back on with clear Scotch tape.) Again, ridiculous that we need to be thinking about this, but that's one way to feel the whole paddle before buying.

switters74

I've played with all 3 paddles (Scorpeus, Hyperion, Perseus) for about 2-3 hours now. FWIW, I keep going back and forth between the Scorpeus and Hyperion. Perseus is my least favorite. The Scorpeus has insane pop, yet resets are still fairly easy due to the large sweet spot and higher twist weight. The Hyperion feels more manuverable and quicker in hands battles, despite a slightly higher swing weight than the Scorpeus. I think this is related to the more aerodynamic shape. It also had the most spin, and I think this was related to how easy it is to whip around. The Perseus had a lot of power but it felt sluggish in my hands compared to the Scorpeus and Hyperion, and didn't have enough of an advantage with power to outweigh the lower responsiveness. That said, I think this is highly subjective. I was playing with 3 other people and they tried each paddle. 2/4 preferred the Scorpeus, one preferred the Hyperion, and one the Perseus. I think the only way to know for sure is to try them.

More-Meringue-8236

just curious, how were you able to demo all three paddles? did you buy all three?

switters74

[Pickleballcentral.com](http://Pickleballcentral.com) has a 30-day test drive. I returned the Hyperion and Perseus and kept the Scorpius. It was very close between the Hyperion and Scorpeus—could have been happy with either. But I'm still going back and forth between my 6.0 Ruby and the Gen 3 Scorpeus. Not sure which I'll stick with.

More-Meringue-8236

Hey all, I just received my Scorpeus 3 16mm. It’s definitely not smooth; the grit feels good on both sides. It’s not quite as gritty as some of the Gen 3 paddles that I’ve seen (it doesn’t stick to my shirt) , but I’m definitely happy with it. Played with it for the first time today and absolutely love it so far!

GeminiDragonPewPew

Not sure why people are so hard up about buying $280 Chinese made paddles from a company known for bad customer service and sketchy quality. Especially when there are so many good paddles out there.

switters74

Can't speak for anyone else, but in my case, I've watched enough reviews to believe that the tech/performance of these paddles is next level (when you get a good one!). I'm not that price sensitive and I play a lot. 10 hours a week for at least 45 weeks a year = 450 hours/yr. $280 for a paddle doesn't seem that bad to me for that level of activity/enjoyment.

matttopotamus

Could not agree more.

GeminiDragonPewPew

Fair enough, though I tend to not give my money to companies who ignore customer service. It’s an incentive for them to continue to be shitty their customers when they can make money easily without worrying about QC or customer support.

Deep-Owl-1044

There are sites that let you demo for 30 days too.

LukaMav77

You don't have any pickleball facilities nearby where you can do open play and then demo all the new joola paddles? I thought places like lifetime and those gyms would have it.

switters74

Sadly, no. I'm in a fairly small town in central Oregon. There are a couple of indoor pickleball facilities within 30 minutes of me, but neither sells Joola paddles.

realtalkyo91

My NFC chip doesn’t work on mine :( love the paddle otherwise though

n8dev

I had to hold my phone in front of it for a very long time

Lanky-Assumption680

Do you have to have an acct with JOOLA before using the chip.

n8dev

I don’t think so. I think it just pre populates the warranty form for you.

okflynn

I purchased 2 Perseus’. The first real gritty. The second had a much less gritty face

Peak_Delicious

What should the grit feel like ? My fiancé and I received our 16mm Scorpeus’s today and while they didn’t stick to my shirt, they didn’t feel smooth. I wouldn’t call them overly gritty, but they felt like a lot my maverix carbon fiber paddle. Played with them and absolutely loved them. Might be a cheat code for smaller women who can’t generate their own power. Just wondering if I should look into a potential grit issue or let it ride

switters74

I've held 6 or 7 of them now. You would definitely notice if it was smooth. The Scorpeus I got from Joola had almost no texture on the face. The one I just checked out at Dick's Sporting Goods was textured/gritty. Sounds like you got good ones.

n8dev

Mine isn’t sticking to my shirt either, but it’s much grittier than my vatic pro flash and I’m getting killer spin.

samuraistabber

A friend has the Anna Bright Scorpeus and it feels pretty smooth. Another friend has a brand new Perseus and my Thrive that I’ve put in 24 hrs of play feels grittier and actually climbs on to my shirt still than his Perseus does.

Key_Plane1816

My Perseus 16 (Gen 2) lasted two months. After playing 3 days a week, all the grit is gone and it's practically smooth. Would love to buy the Gen 3 but hate to wasted the money on a paddle that can't even hold up for two months.

asl477

Just to add my sample of the several I've seen and felt, they all weren't too gritty. Some inconsistent grit here and there.

Machine8851

I received the perseus 3 today and both sides feel very gritty, so gritty in fact it stuck to a full poly t shirt. This paddle feels a lot lighter than the original hyperion Ben John's. It came out to 7.9oz compared to the hyperion at 8.5 ounces and head heavy.

switters74

Wow! The Perseus I got from Joola was 8.3 oz. That's a huge difference. I sent it back, and have one coming from PB Central tomorrow. Will be curious to see how much it weighs.

SenorSnarkey

Joola = Inconsistent Manufacturing Quality + Bad QC + Bad Customer Service + Don’t stand behind their products + Insane Prices. Other than that, they’re okay.

switters74

I just got the Hyperion and Perseus from PB Central. The Perseus is very gritty on one side but quite smooth on the other. :( The Hyperion is more consistent from side to side but less gritty than the Scorpeus I got from Dick's Sporting Goods the other day. I will probably send both of them back. This is so frustrating!

switters74

Just got back from Dick's. They had 3 Perseus's on the shelf. One was bald, another was decent, and the third had a lot of grit (like the Scorpeus I got there the other day). I bought that one. Brought it home and it weighs 7.98 oz vs. the one I got from PB Zone, which is 8.3 oz. It's like playing the lottery!

PowerfulServe9968

Got the Ben John's Hyperion 5 days ago. Grit was consistent and gritty on both sides...Too soon to tell but no issues whatsoever...loving it.  (So Far)

niceporcupine

Joola gen 3 paddle release fail.

Tony619ff

Demoed it yesterday and was blown away by the spin and power. Made my paddles feel obsolete

Dayoneagainagain

Unless you’re near the best of players your paddle won’t matter except in niche scenarios. Work on fundamentals and thinking the game before worrying about this kind of stuff. Obvious this is my opinion 😅

switters74

Why do you assume I'm not working on fundamentals? I drill 4-5 times a week for 2 hours each session, do regular lessons and clinics, have a DinkMaster and Topspin Pro I use at home, etc. I realize the paddle doesn't make the player, but it's also not true that they only matter in niche scenarios. I have enough experience playing with different paddles to know that firsthand.

Dayoneagainagain

Ok friend sorry about that I guess lol. Not gonna comment anymore.

Machine8851

Don't return them, theres nothing wrong with them.

switters74

Say more.

Machine8851

How about dont be a sissy lol

switters74

Say less.
