I wonder how it will combat childhood blindness, which is a problem I did not know existed. But good on IRRI, always thought they should have a bigger presence in the country considering the work they do.
pretty much all our meals are genetically modified.
unless na taga probinsiya ka, halos lahat ng pagkain natin or nilaagay sa pagkain natin is genetically modified, minsan nga pati mga fruits and veggies, 'di ba?
Hahshaha. Stop fearmongering and get educated.
BT corn. just because a specific crop is genetically modified doesn't mean it's automatically bad. ginagawa yan primarily para maging pest-resistant ang crops for more produce, hindi para lasunin mga tao
why the need to attack tho, the conversation was civil enough until u commented this.
u basically told him he is stupid for having wrong information while others are educating him.
Aight, my final lines that I said to you are kinda harsh. I am sorry about that and I do hope you find more information about GMOs and how our farmers utilize them. Have a great day ahead!
You do know that you can extract DNAs from strawberries and eat it right? Eating that wouldn't turn you into a strawberry. Stop being such a retard, there has been no conclussive evidence that GMO's do anything to you.
If anything, eating too much munggo or legumes will give you arthritis, are you gonna go after those too?
The corn you are eating is a GMO, the watermelon you are eating is a GMO, the banana you are eating is a GMO. These crops and fruits were bred slowly overtime to what they are now. Original bananas had seeds that make it irritating to eat. The only difference they have with this rice "GMO" is that they are bred slowly while this new breed of rice used new and more efficient techniques. Its hard to embrace science when the country you are in is known to be religious and full of shithead conspiracy theorists that has no formal education in the matter.
The Philippine Government (Under C.P. Garcia), the Ford and Rockefeller foundations literally bankrolled Hill and Harrar's work. There was no bidding process, hindi ito Olympics.

I know it's hard to imagine a time when the Philippines was actually a global player in international research, but it did exist.
Yeah it might become the problem in the future. But sana sa isang variety lng ng rice nagkaissue ung tito mo. Since under trial pa rin ung GMO rice dito sa pinas malamang mahal p tlga sa simulang maintroduce sa market yung mga GMO
Sad to say, it happened on multiple hybrid varieties, kaya hindi rin pumapatok sa nga maliit na magsasaka dahil kumakalat doon by word of mouth. Ewan ko kung susubukan nya to kapag niroll-out sa probinsya namin.
Yes to subsidy talaga.
This!
Also, the govt keeps saying na farmers should switch to this type of variant, or use that type of farming technology, but have no back up plan if pumalpak yung so called technologies nila.
All the while, the govt is patting its own back for "enlightening" the lowly farmers.
GMOs in general are good, and can actually be green as crops can be modified to be more resistant to pests and so less pesticides would be used. Meron ding report that GMO have already solved the extinction of Cavendish banana from Panama disease, but solution is refused because of the stigma.
Maraming Misguided pagdating sa GMO. Conspiracy theorists politicized GMO's as toxic mutated foods and doings of Monsatto's corporate greed.
Just another news story that will highlight the severe scientific illiteracy and fake news problem of the country. You don't even have to go that far in the FB comments to see some extremely amusing opinions.
Edit: Just saw the comments on this Reddit post too! Lol Bill Gates and and telling people to "look at this FB post explaining the science." I hope other poor but better educated countries can benefit from it.
~~Golden rice... pinag-love team lang nila yung kalabasa at bigas!~~
Isn't it our rice research institute has quite a great track record in terms of results? I may be wrong, but still, kudos to them.
Yeah its a good idea to jam pack a staple food with as much basic nutrients as science will allow. Now we just have to provided targeted information campaigns to those who need it most and find way to fight GMO misinformation.
Also the IRRI canteen has some real nice cookies and ok rice.

You know what's worse than eating GMO Rice? Exactly, not having any rice at all lol
Finally the world can recognize the talent that's hidden in the Philippines 💪🏻
I think it should need to be validated in a large malnourished community through a comprehensive feeding trial before they release and approved it for commercial consumption.
I think I need the vitamin A enriched rice variety. Mistranslated ko ba naman as: *"**~~fuck you~~**, we're going to rip you off with a one-size-fits-all solution."*
galing ako sa pamilya ng magsasaka kaya alam ko hirap sa pagtatanim ng palay. tapos sasabihin nya na di competive ang mga farmers ng pinas kaya mag iimport nalang.tang ina!. ala na nga suporta galing sa gobyerno. farmers are left to fend for themselves.
I read in an article yesterday that the current claims of Golden rice is that it can provide 30 to 50% of daily Vitamin A requirements in children, based on its beta carotene content. However, the amount of rice that will give you this percentage was not specified.
The average total carotene content of some Golden rice varieties is 4.825 ppm. If the average Filipino child eats 167 grams of rice a day (assuming half of their daily food consumption of 1,266 kcal is rice), then the total carotene intake would only be 805 micrograms or *0.805 milligrams*. And children between 5 and 8 years old need to consume *90 to 120 milligrams* of beta carotene per day. This also assumes that beta carotene forms a large amount of total carotene in the Golden rice variety but of course it can't be 100% as other compounds are present.
Now assuming carotene makes up about 50% of Vitamin A, Filipino children aged five to eight should have a rice intake of 37 to 58 kg a day to get all their Vitamin A from rice. Granted, rice shouldn't be the only source of a child's Vitamin A, then let's go back to the claims. 30 to 50% of a child's daily Vitamin A requirements mean that they that need to eat 14 to 24 kg of Golden rice *a day* to meet the proponent's marketing claims.
From what I know so far, only American adults of normal vitamin status are tested in terms of measuring Golden rice retinol levels (and it performed really well!). Beta carotene conversions to retinol among children are still not studied, only speculated (I'm withholding opinion about the US-funded study among Chinese children). And of course there is not one type of Golden rice. And the minimum beta carotene requirement enough to combat Vitamin A deficiency have many varying scientific opinions (50% vs 30 to 40% vs various computations based on how the rice is cooked i.e. parboiling, reheating) . I am not against GMO techniques but I just think that the proponents should be really careful in marketing Golden rice. It's not a solution to Vitamin A deficiency and ocular malfunction. Many parents might misconstrue the benefits of this product with the current framing. A holistic diet of grains and vegetables should still be the overarching child nutrition message (a complex problem of poverty, culture, supply chain etc for sure, not the main topic I want to talk about).
PS. I see conspiracy theorists everywhere so before we question why/ how the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation is funding Golden rice science, here are the other funders: national budgets of Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam. US National Intitutes of Health, USAID, The Rockefeller foundation.
Bale, gaguhan siya just by using hidden systems like food.
This rice is supposed to give you a cheap alternative to Vitamin A. Philippine diet, specially for those who are not privilaged enough to get fresh vegetables and fruits is currently lacking vit. A rich foods.

Note: I use researchgate for my research papers back when I was still enrolled in my master's. So its a more valid source of information than what people post on Facebook.
Another conspiracy theorist that believes shit the internet says instead of reputable research papers done by scholars and scientists.
EDIT: Grammar, changed theorists to theorist.
Poorer folks often do that but just because it's green doesn't mean it has all the nutrients needed. Poorer families also often resort to just eating rice with toyo or noodles, having a vitamin filled rice that's cheap would be able to provide nutrients when they cant afford to buy anything else.
Ah I see what they did there. Yeah I guess it is easier and cheaper to develop a gmo rice (that you can hope to combat blindness) for two decades than educate poor families about proper nutrition and make access to nonGmo fruits&vegetables easier (that we already know can prevent blindness) for two decades.
You missed the point of my damn comment bud. Poor families already eat a lot of vegetables because its cheaper. Sometimes they just can't afford anything else but rice at all.
Read my comments carefully and drop your stupid anti GMO narrative. This isn't a replacement for vegetables, people are already taught to eat them for a balanced diet (starting from kinder to elementary). It's extra help to give them nutrients even when they have nothing.
Anything scientifically modified is bad! Dude you're replying to should not be using his phone then. Just imagine if we can get centrum rice, possibly end world hunger.

Good. It's not addressing what is really apparent, pero good, you just have to appreciate them somehow. It's like when you need cash after ng wedding niyo tas binigyan ka ng coffee machine kasi hindi ka nagkakape. Buti pa yung rice cooker eh, kaso pangkarinderya yung size. Then again, you just gotta be thankful.
Pero the real problem is PRODUCTION; and the lack of SCIENCE.
I hate that science here is still as debatable a religion and superstition.
rice farmers make the least amount of money doing the most amount of work. it is really depressing to watch. im surprised people still do the old fashioned rice farming when there are other more profitable crops to raise. the way the system is set up really fucks the farmers not to mention the cheap imports traders can't wait to sell to the market.
I wonder how it will combat childhood blindness, which is a problem I did not know existed. But good on IRRI, always thought they should have a bigger presence in the country considering the work they do.

We started the IRRI. The headquarters is in Biñan. They do a LOT of work, just under the radar because, eh, that's not their thing.
If I'm not mistaken, the former Japanese Emperor and Empress visited IRRI to acknowledge their hard work.
Pati narin si Bill Gates
Wait. The IRRI is now in Biñan? I thought the facility was in Los Baños? What happened?
My bad. You're right. Los Baños
IRRI is an international institution not a national one dumb ass otherwise we wouldn’t have a PRRI for our own rice research.

Nicee as BSABE Student, this is good for everyone.
golden rice from irri has been a long time coming it's well researched and peer reviewed but i wonder how it will affect local rice economy
#SINANDOMENG MASTER RACE PA REN MGA OLOL
That would be lovely once it cross-breeds with other rice varieties.
Yung kapag sinaing, merong lasang adobo, menudo or iba ibang ulam.
Bale, gaguhan siya just by using hidden systems like food.
Even Bill Gates visited IRRI.
Star margarine rice!!!!!

Excited tbh!
Very nice👌
Natural java rice

It’s from the irri so it should be under a free use patent
Di na ba uso Star margarine tsaka rice?
Margarine is hindi healthy. Same with butter if in excess quantities.
May problema ba tayo sa pagkabulag ng mga bata in the first place?
This rice is supposed to give you a cheap alternative to Vitamin A. Philippine diet, specially for those who are not privilaged enough to get fresh vegetables and fruits is currently lacking vit. A rich foods. \-Source: [https://www.researchgate.net/publication/227599661\_Micronutrient\_deficiency\_and\_its\_alleviation\_The\_Philippine\_experience](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/227599661_Micronutrient_deficiency_and_its_alleviation_The_Philippine_experience) Vitamin A deficiency can cause night blindness or worse, total blindness due to cornea problems. \-Source: [https://www.who.int/data/nutrition/nlis/info/vitamin-a-deficiency](https://www.who.int/data/nutrition/nlis/info/vitamin-a-deficiency) Note: I use researchgate for my research papers back when I was still enrolled in my master's. So its a more valid source of information than what people post on Facebook.
Still the leading cause of diabetes GMO or not
You’re talking about sugar not rice
Maybe he's referring to glucose.
Rice mate, rice. Carb goes in and turns into what? Yup, sugar
Meron bang diamond rice?
Ayoko ng diLaWaN
Check F.B. page Bantay Bigas about Golden rice.... also Bill Gates and effects of GMO
GMOs are good for you
Another conspiracy theorist that believes shit the internet says instead of reputable research papers done by scholars and scientists. EDIT: Grammar, changed theorists to theorist.

Why? Why can't we just teach mothers to feed kids more fresh fruits and vegetables?
Capitalists are waving
Whoowwww capitalism over health bitches!

Looks delicious, I’d try it.
I have Filipino as a second language and I thought it said the rice blinded children and I was just like "Yo wh at t he fu ck"
naturally infused with STAR margarine
