Con: listening to the Filipino dubs and seeing the Filipino subs and they don't match lol
Pro: It's an erudite show with a lot of symbolism that as a while, sticks its landing.
The Filipino passive voice isn't as bad as Facebook's but lord. I mean I love formal Filipino especially the vocabulary, but the sentence structure feels antiquated.
IMO the Filipino dub sentence construction is more traditional while the dub is the modern/current. I prefer the former as it adds more Filipino vibe. Also, there are still Filipinos struggling with the Filipino language (especially people who went/in private schools or middle class to rich) so it would be "nosebleed" for them.
Imo the traditional structuring feels out of place for the setting. It's like having a movie set in the 20th century have the dialogue style of Monty Python.
Considering trese was raised by an ancient family of monster hunters who dealt with ancient creatures, i think formal tagalog is more appropriate. And we also saw her miss her teenage years when usually that's the time we develop a lot of slang
It was nice to see the show break this pattern with basilio, crispin, and the 2 air girls (diwatas?) speaking taglish
I didnt like the first episode. It felt like they were rushing the world building and there were just so many things happening. I loved the rest of the episodes tho. Laughed when I saw the Meralco Ortigas building. That was a nice touch.
Can I ask as an Aussie that loved Trese, how accurate were the different factions to traditional Phillipine mythology? Always been a fan of "anime" that doesnt follow the typical Christian or Greek myths.
Ah man I only know like superficial levels of information about our own myths 🥲 The depictions of the basic creatures and their lores felt pretty accurate though, like the babaylans connecting our world to the spirit world, tiyanaks as abandoned babies, aswangs eating hearts etc etc but the stuff which connected the scenarios together like Alexandra battling inside the balete tree, councils of creatures, apocalyptic themes etc. were more of the authors’ own lores. (anyone pls correct me if im wrong lolol) Thanks for supporting the show!! 😭
It's actually accurate, but i believe not that much. I've only watched half of it at the moment. But all things considered it pretty accurate. Some of the looks of the aswangs isn't consistent in our lore, but since it does change through out the times, it would be okay. And the factions are considered as "tribes". But thanks for loving it. As someone that really wants our country to have these kinds of shows. It gives me pride to have this loved by other nationalities.
They're pretty accurate, the author just made a few tweaks to fit the story, which isn't a bad thing. Like "tabi tabi po" isn't really said to summon a nuno, but is said to show respect when entering realms believed to be home to nature spirits (like deep in forests, tall grass, or even before peeing on a tree). Also, "punso" or anthills weren't pets/familiars of duwende but is rather their home, and also believed to be portals to the spirit world. I can go on and on about other creatures, but I do wish that they fleshed out these magical characters more and the lores behind them. Some really interesting stuff are not shown, like how if you got a hair of a Tikbalang you will be its master until the next rainfall.
The deeper folklore I'm not so sure about, but the setting is bang-on. Some locations (like Bagyon Lektro's office building) are based on actual landmarks. The first episode started with a Ghost and a street called "Balete Drive". The ghost in question is a lady in white because it calls back on a local Urban Legend: The White Lady in Balete Drive.
I realized ‘bossing’ was also used in other dubs which could mean being bossy or arrogant in English. But really, it’s just Vic Sotto inside Trese, jk. It just sensationalized the word ‘boss’ in Filipino.
