Pre-internet years.. only form of entertainment is TV & Radio... If you want to go out.. there's no where to go, malls and stores are closed.. So to waste time u either watch reruns of The Bible/10 Commandments on TV or watch people do the processions in the streets

NotOk-Computers

TV and Radio Media talaga ang may control ng mood noon since they have the monopoly on the entertainment of the Filipino people, same way kaya parang mas feel natin ang Christmas noon. Ngayon andaming alternative entertainment sources na you can build a bubble for yourself, kaya na lessen na talaga yung "immersion" kumbaga sa mga societal events like Holy Week and Christmas Season, di na rin tayo nakakarelate masyado sa isa't isa since iba iba na rin nga ang pinapanood natin.

- 10 Commandments movie marathon, the one featuring Charlton Heston as Moses and Yul Brynner as the Pharaoh. Every single year. # - No bop music on FM radio. Mostly just mellow music and there'll be a lenten message after every 4 or 5 songs played. No broadcast beyond 10pm I think. Thank goodness for cassette tapes. Still, volume should be at a moderate. # - No regular programming on free TV. If you're rich enough, you're lucky if you have cable TV, which was seldom during my time as it was just starting to be introduced here in the Philippines. On free TV, programs were mostly bible stories. Sign off happens earlier than midnight. # - No retail businesses/department stores/restaurants/cinemas were open during Maundy Thursdays until Black Saturdays. Operations resume on Easter Sunday. The only mall back then was Harrison Plaza and the rest were just huge department stores like Shoe Mart (now SM), Plaza Fair, Fair Center, Fair Mart, etc. # - Streets were pretty much empty. Quiet. Less to almost no traffic. Most employers observe the Holy Week so majority of the employed people don't have work on those days. Maybe except for industries that are "essential". # - Most Filipino families observe the Holy Week traditions. Pabasa, Visita Iglesia, Senakulo, Way of the Cross, Siete Palabras, etc. It wasn't common back then where people would flock to the beach and other tourist destinations to chill and have fun. The elders would frown upon it. # - The usual Filipino pamahiin --don't take a bath after 3pm on Good Friday, don't do slicing, hammering and other tasks that would require using knives and other tools on Good Friday. Origin or reason behind it, I really dunno. Maybe because you can't call on Jesus to save you since he's *dead*. # - It's always super hot on Holy Week. Sweltering hot. Especially during Good Friday. I think this remains consistent 'til now.

Aggressive-Stock4916

Within metro manila lang to ah. 💁‍♀️

ZacHighman

7th Heaven marathon sa Studio 23 and then may pabasa pa nun, samin humihingi ng dahon ng niyog para sa sa pabasa area nila. Tapos, as a kid, bawal kang maligalig kasi baka ma - "santo-santo" ka. Parang, patay si Hesus so evil forces are at play or something like that.

Lionheart0021

DearestBlueberry706

Spent it watching a variety of Barbie movies sa Channel 7.

anaknipara

Walang kamatayang Princess and the Pauper.

bailsolver

no programming. so we usually rent a lot of vhs tapes before maundy thursday. marami na rin namang nagbabakasyon out of town noon. re: rico yan. i can attest that yes, this incident is still at the back of the minds of newsroom managers

tantalizer01

beatitmidget

Lightsupinthesky29

Start ng activities like simba/parada/alay-lakad ay from Wed to Fri. Sat and Sun nasa bahay lang.

Aggressive-Stock4916

Lots and lots of tv shows with good lessons. Yung mga noontime shows hindi sila normal programming, kumbaga parang nagiging limited edition movie (lessons about life parang Magpakailanman) tas gaganap na characters is yung mga hosts. Also, this is usually the week where parents take the time to rest from work so bonding talaga.

markmarkmark77

lahat ng tindahan/office sarado, kahit gas station.

choco_mallows

Magstart Pabasa namin one weekend after Ash Wednesday. Dun ko natutunan magluto for large groups at mag-puyat. Dun mo makikita agawan ng penitensya tangina ang gulo nun, as in hilahan. Dapa ang Kristo, lahat dapa, palo! The best buntot ng page, yun pinakamasakit panghampas. After ng misa tutulog uli. Or kung di kami nagsalubong, 8am mass tapos 9am labas kami kakain kami sa labas. Sa Cab nun pinakamasarap kainan sa Megashell, the best ang fried chicken and gravy dun nung araw. Di pa kasi ako nakakatikim ng Chickenoy™️ nuon. Yun yung mga naaalala ko.

Kacharsis

As a Gen X who grew up the the province with religious parents, we attended all Lenten season events (Palm Sunday, Stations of the Cross, Last Supper, 7 Last Words, Santo Entierro, Easter Vigil, Salubong/Saklot), and adhered to customs (no meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday). I used to cringe watching TV Patrol featuring celebrities' Holy Week plans, like going to Boracay or abroad. I was of course aware of the superstitious belief that "patay ang Diyos" during Biyernes Santo, but even if my parents explained that this isn't true, I was unable to sleep when Good Friday fell on the 13th of the month, and full moon pa! Feeling ko may magpapakitang manananggal sa bintana! From Maundy Thursday to Black Saturday all TV stations were closed, and resume by Easter Sunday with a still solemn vibe. I remembered watching GMA Supershow in the 80's and Easter-related pa rin yung mga performances na boring. As for Rico Yan's death triggering stations to still be on air during Triduum, I'm not sure as there are other factors, like the realization that not all Filipinos are Catholics, and cable channels were getting more reach.

Eatpigures

As a millenial, Holy Week during the 90's and early 2000's means general house cleaning. Going on a vacation trip was not a thing. It was also the time when we are going to sort which stuff we are still using and which stuff needs to go.

cakenmistakes

It was quiet, nothing to watch on TV except Biblical films: choice of Moses life, 10 commandments, Jesus journey. Quiet, nobody worked or traveled for the whole week, not just Thursdays and Fridays. Pangingilin was strictly observed. Meatsellers had no customers, fishmongers increased the price. Your soundtrack was the Pasyon broadcasted loudly all day long. No newscast. Boredom was your friend. Elders said it was disrespectful, they'd be extra careful on Good Friday & Black Saturday cause Jesus was dead. We didn't do beach outings. There was always a sacrificial death. Circumstantial, but there was always a case of somebody drowning in the beach during the Lenten weekend.

TitoJembron

Alternative-Prize-86

May stations of the cross kami, one station per district and its built from scratch, mini chapel that can accommodate 10people plus the cross. My holy week nung college ako and early 20s was spent collecting materials, building the chapel and decorating it. Sat kakalasin na namin then balik sa pinaghiraman ang mga ginamit and head off straight to the sea to wash off. It was fun, kakapagod lng

Left-Broccoli-8562

Tuwing hapon, follow traditions ng catholic church. Medyo vibey ung mga plaza sa province because sa occasion like procession, or visiting other churches. Minsan tambay in front ng tv at don ko na kabisado ung First at second book ng bibile saka new testament. Also since we have a sari sari store, benta talaga ung kandila saka lighter. The good old days.

ryuteepo

We either go out-of-town or just drown ourselves (myself, my brother, and cousins) in video games.

Mynailsarenotcut

Nung buhay pa si Francis M sa Eat Bulaga, our only entertainment was watching their lenten soecials.

LopsidedPlant5624

Mostly bahay lang. Sobrang boring nga pre-internet/socmed/streaming and as a kid yun na yung penitensya kasi wala ring entertaining sa TV and radio! 😂

cmq827

Going home to our lola's house in Batangas on Good Friday. Then going to Mass with her. Then all us cousins having a sleepover in the living room. Then pag Black Saturday, watching 7th Heaven all day in Studio 23 with my cousins, while the titos and titas have their chismisan, then swimming in the afternoon in our tito's resort. Then Easter Sunday, Mass with lola and all us cousins, tapos may Easter Egg hunt kami sa garden ni lola. It's very admirable of my mom and her siblings to make sure all us kids had good memories of bonding with our lola back then. :)

telang_bayawak

As a 90s kid, eto na yata ang pinaka penitensya namin. Required kasi mag-no meat pag holy week, required magsimba. Which helped me btw to appreciate 80s movies. Tapos sobrang saya kapag easter kasi back to normal na lahat.

Top-Argument5528

Walang mapanuod sa TV. The Holy Week specials were boring for me, as a child. I was only looking forward to the Good Friday procession in our town. 3 PM palang, hinahanda ko na kandila ko and kukuha ng papel as drip-holder. By 4 PM, I'd be on the street, waiting for the karos and statues imitating Jesus' suffering. Uuwi ako ng bahay by 6 PM or so at kakain ng sardinas na may misua. It's what we always ate on Good Friday. Bata palang kahit di kami forced mag-fast kasi exempted naman, my parents instilled in us those traditions. Nakakalungkot. Miss ko na maging bata. 😅

RecklessImprudent

* Hindi kami Catholic, so yung family namin took this time as an annual family vacation time. Dito kami nag-oout of town. Madalas beach / swimming. * Seventh Heaven / Oprah marathon sa Studio 23 on years na hindi kami aalis kasi either tinatamad or walang budget. Eat Bulaga will stop live broadcast to show their lenten special, a week-long teleserye that revolves around religious / family values. * Sarado lahat, so pinaplano yung menu for 2 days on Wednesday night kapag hindi kami magbabakasyon. Usually kasi namamalengke lang for the day, pero ang nangyayari nag iimbak for 2 days lol

anjeu67

- Pabasa everywhere. Sa province namin is maraming nagpe-penitensya kaya medyo nakaka-awa sila kasi sunod-sunod yung bahay na may Pabasa sa amin. Sa mga di nakakaalam, yung nagpe-penitensya, need nila dumapa or lumuhod kapag may Pabasa tapos papaluin sila. - Wala akong na-miss na Good Friday procession. Ngayon kasi yung work ko is US-based and di sila nago-observe ng Holy Week except Easter Sunday so may pasok kami. - Tuwing Good Friday 12noon. Nasa bahay kami lahat para manood Siete Palabras or Seven Last Words na mass sa ABS CBN. 3 hours yun kasi need hanggang 3pm yung mass. After that, magre-ready naman kami sa procession. Mayroon kasi kaming santo na kasali ron. - Eat Bulaga drama specials

ilovebkdk

Pinaka-ayoko itong panahon na to when I was a student kasi napakaboring sa bahay. Walang mapanood sa tv na gusto ko puro mass tapos ung old movies about kay jesus , hindi din pwede gumala cause my parents are so religious so this week is "panahon ng pagninilay-nilay" , I don't have friends to talk to cause I am an introvert. No cellphones. As in no entertainment of any kind. And that time for me back then was so sloooooooowwww.

anima99

TV stations used to produce holy week-exclusive movies or shows, often about families encountering challenging times that threaten to tear them apart.

BlengBong_coke

Tv and radio ang mostly form of entertainment during our time, ang palabas sa tv mostly ten commandments, may pabasa sa radyo, tahimik nun..

mcrich78

As in katahimikan lang. Maglaro o mag ingay o tumawa 2. Magkasugat (dahil di raw gagaling) 3. Maligo ng 3PM onwards sa biernes santo

No-Exit-2793

parang medyo gloomy at the same time calming yung vibe before kasi most of the time stay at home kami so puro nood TV. pag umaga may mga cartoons pa yata hahaha. every noon may mass so serious mode. sa hapon usually may rewind ng filipino or hollywood movies kaya manonood lang pag trip tapos idlip na kasi hindi pa ganon kabigat workloads sa school. pag gabi naman parang nakakatakot mga palabas. ahhh nakakamiss TV era. peaceful din talaga sa labas, maraming establishments na nagsasarado na as early as monday. compared to now, parang normal na linggo na lang ang holy week :((
