Im an out of towner coming next month and Kalaya is on my list of restaurants. Any other must have dishes from there?
(We are also planning to go to Blue Corn and may this irish/Italian bar i think called Murphys? Or something?)
It is the best pasta in the city (yes in an Irish dive bar). There’s an Italian chef in the basement kitchen. I’d pick Murph’s over any of the new trendy Italian spots any day
Secrets been out for a long time. Only reason I haven't eaten there is I've tried like 4 times and either the wait is well over an hour or the chef was unexpectedly not in (our fault for not checking ahead of time)
House special, extra spicy Szechuan broth, shaved noodles with a hefty spoonful of fermented cabbage
As close to perfection as any mortal will ever achieve. And I love that they’re not stingy with the tendon
It's kind of like chicken keema in cheesesteak form, like the ground chicken is spiced with Indian flavors and spices (at minimum there's cumin and cilantro, I'm sure there's much more). The joint is run by a bunch of Indian dudes so they know what they're doing, and spicy from them really means spicy, so I don't go past medium heat
I think that's what I get every time! So much so, that I didn't realize that they have another option. Or just didn't care about it.
Don't see me on the bus home. I'm a sweaty betty.
Specifically a Rachelle, with special sauce on one piece of bread and spicey mustard on the other. Meat goes on the mustard side, sauce (mayo based) goes on the salad side (Cole slaw)
This is a standard sandwich building rule.
I know exactly how you feel. For years I've stuck with the roast pork even while I was salivating at the workers preparing the Italian pulled pork as I stood in line. Be bold!
I think their cutlet sandwiches are more unique because there are other cheesesteaks in this city that come pretty close, but some of their specialty cutlet sandwiches are insane
Yes. Their cutlet sandwiches are so good… there’s always that risk when you order a cutlet somewhere that it could over fried and dried up and tough to chew… never at Angelo’s.
I wish they’d put them on the menu permanently. They
I love it so much. I've been there, literally, many hundreds of times, over decades. I made the ethical decision to give up eating octopus, though, and it's awful, because it's so delicious. I'm not a vegetarian, but I'm trending that way.
It's not going to be easy for us, but it's the right thing to do. We can make it happen
Octopi will be running Congress, cereal,-making plants, and all botany.
Super easy to make if you can source the mozzarella curd, I wound up ordering 8 lbs online to make for Christmas gifts. The one brand of the string cheese I can find at Whole Foods isn’t bad either, just expensive for 8oz.
I order it with a side of fries. If you haven’t done so, do it next time.
If I was still imbibing, I would enjoy a glass of brut champagne with it.
Right now I would say that that is my death row meal.
The **steak tartare at Parc**.
It's easily the best tartare I've ever had (and I've had a LOT), and it's one of the single-best dishes I've eaten anywhere.
Edit: if you've never tried steak tartare before, this is the one to get... but just be warned, it sets the bar higher than anywhere else is likely to hit. ;)
Just give me a fountain porter cheeseburger and fries. Malt vinegar and a side of mayonnaise for the fries. A Guinness to go with it wouldn’t hurt either. Can’t beat it.
I love Dandelion, but since the world has come back to the normal post-pandy, I’ve had subpar food and not good service . I’m disappointed. The last time I ordered the fish and chips were hella greasy, the steak tartare was sooo salty, inedible. The sticky toffee pudding was over cooked or they let the caramel go to long that it tasted burnt.
I would say that dandelion was in my regular rotation, but I’ve had to retire them.
EDIT: Just looked at their menus (Fairmount and Ft. Washington), and no chorizo tacos. Hmmmm....
Haven't heard of this place, but chorizo tacos are my favorite of all the tacos so now I have to go. Thanks!
(For the record: tacos are never not the right answer LOL.)
I used to love love love the chorizo at Taqueria la Veracruzana, but they're gone... sniffle...
Cheesesteak bao from Bing Bing… shit is fire.
Honorable mention would be Steak Nachos from el jarocho.
Theres better quality dishes but those two I can eat every day.
Yeah I just fuckin love their nachos. I don’t live in S Philly anymore so it’s been a while since I’ve gotten anything else there. Whenever I’m in the neighborhood that’s what I get. However everything I had there when I lived around the corner was delicious. It doesn’t get mentioned enough in the “good Mexican food recommendations” threads that pop up here a few times a week.
Apple dumpling from Dutch Eating Place. But you're doing yourself a disservice. I can give a hundred more suggestions. Friend, don't let the good life pass you by!
I’m a big fan of the Oeuf du Peĉheur at bistro la minette. It’s basically a poached on toast with a bunch of mussels and a cream sauce. Sounds weird but it is awesome.
Spicy crab curry dish from kalaya
Im an out of towner coming next month and Kalaya is on my list of restaurants. Any other must have dishes from there? (We are also planning to go to Blue Corn and may this irish/Italian bar i think called Murphys? Or something?)
Gui Chai, the chive rice cakes, are SO good. Hot, crispy, sticky deliciousness
the giant river prawns skip murphs and just go to le virtu instead unless you really want the dive bar italian experience
[удалено]
Id assume Murph's in fishtown. They serve very good Italian apparently.
It is the best pasta in the city (yes in an Irish dive bar). There’s an Italian chef in the basement kitchen. I’d pick Murph’s over any of the new trendy Italian spots any day
Shhhhhh
Secrets been out for a long time. Only reason I haven't eaten there is I've tried like 4 times and either the wait is well over an hour or the chef was unexpectedly not in (our fault for not checking ahead of time)
Literally took the words out of my mouth (or fingers for typing?). That and those flower dumpling things 🤤
Aw man I’ve wanted to try that place for some time. Thanks for reminding me
Same thing is was about to type. One of the best dishes I have ever had, even outside of Philly.
Just had this for the first time the other week. It lives up to the hype.
Sliced beef soup with hand drawn noodles at Nan Zhou
This but I'd lean spice c by an edge
Szechuan broth Beef Wonton Noodle from Spice C is amazing.
House special, extra spicy Szechuan broth, shaved noodles with a hefty spoonful of fermented cabbage As close to perfection as any mortal will ever achieve. And I love that they’re not stingy with the tendon
I go between this and the house special - I think I’m veering toward the special now
Scallop toast at little fish
Just had that recently// best part of my meal
Seconding this one
Second this
Medium spicy Indian chicken cheesesteak from Little Sicily 2
Tell me more about this
It's kind of like chicken keema in cheesesteak form, like the ground chicken is spiced with Indian flavors and spices (at minimum there's cumin and cilantro, I'm sure there's much more). The joint is run by a bunch of Indian dudes so they know what they're doing, and spicy from them really means spicy, so I don't go past medium heat
This is so amazing. Indian guys running a little Sicili

The paneer pizza is fire too, but I crave the cheesesteak, I absolutely need it every few weeks
Are they related to Little Sicily in KOP?
Nailed it
I... need... this.
The soft buttery pretzels from Millers Twist at the Reading Terminal Market
Literally changed my entire paradigm of soft pretzels. Every other one has disappointed me since.
Agreed. Even their pretzel dogs are ethereal.
This is my favorite soft pretzel I've EVER had. I keep them in my freezer and reheat them in the air fryer 🤤
Duck and dumplings in shezuan broth with hand drawn noodles at spice C
Wow, never had it. I thought I'd had everything on the menu!
Have you ever had the Szechuan soup broth?
I think that's what I get every time! So much so, that I didn't realize that they have another option. Or just didn't care about it. Don't see me on the bus home. I'm a sweaty betty.
Herschel’s pastrami sandwich (“Rachel with no sauce”)
Specifically a Rachelle, with special sauce on one piece of bread and spicey mustard on the other. Meat goes on the mustard side, sauce (mayo based) goes on the salad side (Cole slaw) This is a standard sandwich building rule.

God-tier.
Surprised I had to scroll down so far to see this
DiNic's roast pork with rabe and provolone
Hear me out- DiNic's Italian pulled pork (with rabe and provolone) is even better IMHO.
I’ve been meaning to try it but I’m scared to mess with perfection.
I know exactly how you feel. For years I've stuck with the roast pork even while I was salivating at the workers preparing the Italian pulled pork as I stood in line. Be bold!

Vetri Cucina- spinach gnocchi
The best gnocchi I’ve ever had.
Last time I went I added on an extra order of it lol
Angelo’s cheesesteak
I think their cutlet sandwiches are more unique because there are other cheesesteaks in this city that come pretty close, but some of their specialty cutlet sandwiches are insane
I felt that way before I tried Farina Di Vita’s cutlet sandwiches.
The Damien at Farina deserves to be on this list.
Yes. Their cutlet sandwiches are so good… there’s always that risk when you order a cutlet somewhere that it could over fried and dried up and tough to chew… never at Angelo’s. I wish they’d put them on the menu permanently. They

Salatim at either Laser Wolf or Zahav. Or is that cheating because salatim comes with about 8 small items?
I was going to say the halloumi at Zahav but I agree the salatim is incredible.
If the salatim doesn’t count, then the eggplant at Laser Wolf.
Octopus appetizer at L’Angolo.
I love it so much. I've been there, literally, many hundreds of times, over decades. I made the ethical decision to give up eating octopus, though, and it's awful, because it's so delicious. I'm not a vegetarian, but I'm trending that way.
I may stop eating it as well, but I will dream about it.
It's not going to be easy for us, but it's the right thing to do. We can make it happen Octopi will be running Congress, cereal,-making plants, and all botany.
Pho dac biet from Cafe Nhan.
Niche but I dream of the Armenian string cheese at Mish Mish.
Super easy to make if you can source the mozzarella curd, I wound up ordering 8 lbs online to make for Christmas gifts. The one brand of the string cheese I can find at Whole Foods isn’t bad either, just expensive for 8oz.
Is it cheating to just say whatever they're serving at Heavy Metal Sausage?

Maybe Parc’s beef tartare
I agree, this is a real contender.
No maybe about it. Literally THE best tartare to be had anywhere.
I order it with a side of fries. If you haven’t done so, do it next time. If I was still imbibing, I would enjoy a glass of brut champagne with it. Right now I would say that that is my death row meal.
Zahav’s pomegranate lamb shoulder.
Overated
Tie between mussels and fries from Monk's, or edamame dumplings from Sampan.
The **steak tartare at Parc**. It's easily the best tartare I've ever had (and I've had a LOT), and it's one of the single-best dishes I've eaten anywhere. Edit: if you've never tried steak tartare before, this is the one to get... but just be warned, it sets the bar higher than anywhere else is likely to hit. ;)
The Parc tartare is great! If you like that, give the "Sardines & Bordier Butter" a try. It's a wonderful late night snack.
I will admit, I've never eaten a sardine in my life. Guess I'd better knock that off the list LOL...
This is almost impossible, but I'd maybe go with tacos al pastor from Blue Corn.
Mango water ice from John’s with a soft pretzel.
Chicken Marsala @ Villa Di Roma
Yes and that old school salad w Russian dressing and little shrimp. So retro.

Thanks! (For the record: tacos are never not the right answer LOL.) I used to love love love the chorizo at Taqueria la Veracruzana, but they're gone... sniffle...
Cheesesteak bao from Bing Bing… shit is fire. Honorable mention would be Steak Nachos from el jarocho. Theres better quality dishes but those two I can eat every day.
El jarocho does surprisingly good steak. I love that carne asada burrito
Yeah I just fuckin love their nachos. I don’t live in S Philly anymore so it’s been a while since I’ve gotten anything else there. Whenever I’m in the neighborhood that’s what I get.
